Buick Encore: No Start After Getting Gas?!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 24 сер 2021
- In this video I have a look at a 2017 Buick Encore with the big 1.4 that came in with a customer complaint of the engine light being on. Customer also mentioned car won't start after he gets gas and it is littered with lean codes. I have a pretty good suspicion as to what's going on here. Let's have a look. -Enjoy!

Troubleshooting is what separates Mechanics from parts changers. We are watching a master at his craft.
Easy guy! You aren't wearing your kneepads. Slow down or strap up.
@@joericky4604 you must be a parts changer
I can change the hell outta some parts! 😂
My favorite quote from Eric was, “ we’ve all done stupid things, I’ve done it you’ve done it, and well if you haven’t done a stupid thing, then you probably haven’t done anything at all.”
🤣👌😆
It's nice to know I am not the only one that has cars that fix themselves when I am trying to work on them just to make my day harder than it should be. lol
In the pile!!
(Girly scream, driving off the car trailer) AHHHHH!! 🙀
Always cool to see one of my favorite channels interacting with another
That's happened to me too many times. Now, when I find a questionable item or module, I just save time, and replace with new OEM......

Quality joke right there.
Ha! Great one.
I see what you did there!
It was a great one!
Something tells me that that’s the joke Eric was giving us.
"changed the pipes in his house." Oh that's a good one.
I wonder how many people caught your phone number joke in the first couple of minutes of this video? You were slick in the delivery, Eric!
Tommy Two-Tone agrees
I scanned the comments to see. lol
Pretty much any of us in the 50-60 age group is going to get that reference...the youngins probably not so much :)
Im 36 and know that number by heart lol.
Probably no one under 40. I had a friend that used to give out that number when guys would ask in the bar, most were clueless lol.
Well, when I get gas I run a little rough myself. Luckily there's the venting process and all is well again.
Best to stay in a ventilated area,,,,

I like the Tommy Tutone reference in there.
An older lady in a town near me had that number, and the kids would drive her nuts. She had no clue why they were calling. Eventually the phone company gave her a new number and Jenny's # was retired for a while.
Constantly amazed at how much Eric knows about the workings of a modern automobile.
Especially being in a small town.

Keep turbos on your shelf next to oil filters! 😂
Classic
I think Ford does that too, right beside a replacement Ecoboost engine.
Remember when cars were much simpler? Pepperidge Farm remembers.
Points and carburators was all you needed. Now there is 3709 sensors.
Eric already knew the answer before reaching for the computer. Not that complex - just different compared to a 1960s vehicle.

@@1971merlin don't forget that Eric has mentioned several times over the years about him going to special training courses and seminars regarding various makes and models and how they work and how to troubleshoot them. He wasn't born with this knowledge, but he puts an awful lot of effort to become knowledgeable. You don't want to put in the book work which is now necessary it's going to get harder to be mechanic.
I had to listen to Tommy Tutone right after! Made my day!
Thanks for the way you explain your findings and how you go about repairing the problem. Keep up your great shows.
Always quality content. Thank you for doing the good, honest work and helping teach along the way! Keep on keeping on!!!!

I really enjoy watching your channel while pretending to work at my office job. Lol thanks for all that you do.
Thanks for another great video Eric!
It’s a pretty good way to start my day.
It's always educational to watch you diagnose this kind of problem. Cheers.
Thx Eric. You are so thorough in your diagnostics.
Erick your a genius!!! Diagnostics are on point. Good job. 😁😎👍
As a APC (Amateur Parts Changer) I find these videos very enlightening! As in, Oops, I should have done it like that. My Caprice PPV has me chasing a P0171 and P0174. MAF no, O2 sensors no, Injectors no, Fuel Pump no, and Fuel Pump Plug no. This has turned into my biggest parts throw ever! Lucky for me that I have more money than brains. I'm now gonna take what I have learned from this channel, and diagnose the Fuel Pressure Sensor before I buy one.
😆
Another, happy endings! Thanks Eric for the comprehensive, show and tell fix on the vehicle! SMA Rocks, looking for the next video drop!!

That diagnosis was bloody brilliant!
May God bless you and your family for the great service you provide your customers and us.
I've told you this before and I'm telling it again, you have to be the best diagnostic tech I've ever come across and I spent a career in automotive working with both GM and Ford in hardware and software. Retired now, I stay in contact with other engineers I've worked with, they also watch your channel and are equally as impressed with your skills as I am. You are worth your weight in gold and then some.
His skills for Diagnosis are as great as Sherlock (Mechanic of Auto) at Holmes.
Stop going to auto parts for a scan there looking to seii parts.
Now, all someone has to to is make a car that has a built-in Autel scan tool! 😋 After all, many cars today come with an in-dash entertainment/navigation system; just shove a few more parts in there baby! Badda-bing, badda-boom! (Drum roll, please.) Enhance, enhance! 😂
I had one of these Encore's when they first came out. A year and 30k miles later it started falling apart with electrical issues. First the radio, then switches, including the real latch. I traded it in for a GMC Terrain that later got totaled. Dodged a bullet on both of them. Thank God for gap insurance and good mechanics. Loved the video and thanks for the follow-up at the end. Nice doggy you got as well :)
You are the best, I love to watch your videos, I learned a lot from you, I have been working on cars for over 30 years, keep up the good work.
Car repair always goes better with Rock-n-Roll
Plugs in scan tool... looks at codes... "WOAH! is that a buick?!?!?"
If GM commercials were accurate.
THANK YOU ERIC! I've been dealing with an intermittent lean code P0171/P0174 on my Ford Five Hundred for well over a year now. It never occurred to me it might be the evap purge valve.
I disassembled mine, cleaned out the pintle on the purge valve solenoid, then cleaned out the hose connectors and reconnected them, and lo-and-behold my check engine light went out! Didn't even have to clear the code from the ECM! Like you say; proper diagnosis is the key to a successful car repair! Much obliged!
I had one of my kids car would act upon them they bring it to me I touch it and it's fixed. So I am so glad it happens to someone else. It took six times for me to have it act up on me. Keep the video coming.
This is the 1.4 turbo that's in common use here in Europe. I was thinking filler cap when you started- interesting and informative as usual!
I have seen people have this in the 1.6t also
That was a common problem on the Astra z18xer.
Another great video ☕
Just watched an old video having to do with brake hardware and a full disk brake/ drum brake job. I’ve never seen so much good information in one video. Thank you from a guy who drops everything and works in his driveway. BTW, there was not a comment section in that video. Also, I use a piece of 33 as a bolt or nut holder in a socket. Works great.
Thanks a lot Eric O I am waiting on my hoodie to advertise for you. Great guy and master mechanic.
"If WE can do it, you can do it." 😳

Worse, I got about 3/4 of the employees at work last week with the 8675309...course most of them are teenagers so they have no idea LOL.
All of your vids are amazing. Like a drink from a keg of knowledge!
Great video as always! Also don’t forget about the intake manifold failure on these engines. I changed at least 3 of them.
In computer programming, the equivalent problem is "works in the debugger". Spent 2 days on such a problem recently.
If you can do it, we can try to do it, then if we're lucky enough, we can bring it to you. (When it still doesn't work after swapping our PCV valve for a 90 degree PVC elbow 😜)

Diagnostic tools: computer, screwdriver. Electronic and mechanical testing done. Keep that screwdriver in a pocket protector Eric and I'll send you a pair of taped up glasses to complete the look. 😅
He's absolutely spot on about those 1.4s eating turbos. I'm a parts guy at a GM dealership and usually at least once a week I'm pricing up a turbo job on a Cruze or Trax 😅 I'm to the point where I'm memerizing most of the part numbers lol
I have a friend with the Buick version; tried to tell her about GM and the 1.4's, and I didn't even know about the oil line issue. Of course she bought the Buick.
Thank you... I hate turbos and direct injection..... will not have them until pushed to the wall.
They are both great IF you have a pit crew in your garage and are sponsored by a major company.
They get small pissy engines and jimmy them up to simulate useful power. Who needs it?
Then they give you a numbers deal telling you that it has more HP than a non-turbo.
OOOOOO more HP! must be good??
Saving the planet!!!
BTW the resale $ucks!
@@loufaiella3354 these are not direct injected
@@loufaiella3354 Auto Expert John Cadogan did the math on a small turbo'd engine having better performance and economy that a larger non-turbo. But if you build the engine and turbo out of pot metals, it doesn't work out so well. :(
interesting.. in Europe these engines are not known as trouble makers.. and here they officially run oil change intervalls of up to 18.000 miles..turbos are misdiagnosed so often.. here turbo rebuilders say that 2/3 of the turbos they get are not broken
I’ve been in the area twice recently, but alas my car was running fine. I always learn something when I watch your videos and is like a trip back home when I your that WNY accent.
My family has had 3 of these 1.4L and never had any major problems. These encores are clearly selling good, they are everywhere.
Eric begins having extended dialogues with his diagnostic equipment:
"I'd like to see the fuel trims, please"
"Why do you ask that, Eric?"
"Got a lot of appointments today! Hurry up and give me the trims!"

Man, I wish you were in my area. Amazing how good you are
I feel so much smarter after watching you do these repairs, I might actually be able to fix one of these OBD II hoopties one of these days!
In my experience the purge inlet location is manifold vacuum, which turns into boost under high enough throttle, if the valve is stuck open and the tank is venting it is now a boost leak, which may or may not cause that boost performance code. Depends on the size of the lines and how sensitive the code set criteria is :)
You're on the right thinking on that. GM even says to correct certain codes before doing diag on boost codes. Leans codes are on the list of fix first.
I was thinking purge valve when I read the title. Glad you didn't let me down. I check them the same way., nice vid. The turbos crack internally, you see them with a endoscope.
Your the guy been watching the channel for a few years now ,alway great video's.

Dam Eric your almost to the point where you know what's wrong with a car just buy looking out the door at it !!!
Vehicles tend to have many of the same issues across model lines. It helps when you see a lot of the same issue because you know the best area to begin the diag process.
That buck on the right is a beauty!
All of the common tool suppliers, Lowes, Home Depot, Snap-off, Maxcost, Crac, and such sell multiple Whacktivation tools. They range in size and price, from small sensor testing tools that can also be used to remove and install screws. Medium sized whacktivation tools to test starter motors and A/C compressors that can also be used to extend the reach of ratchets and sockets. All the way up to the larger fuel pump assist tools which also serve as dent installers, valve cover and oil pan looseners, and on rare occasions can be used to adjust the attitude of the steering wheel input...
I petition to have all videos going forward close at your house with the dogs and the cat in frame!!!!!!!
Awesome vid!
I appreciate the steps you point out, purge and vent and explaining the data.
In trying real hard to make sure my grammer and spelling is proper. I knoe how much it gets to you.
Gotta love those engines, gm should provide a free spare. Do away with spare tire and stuff an engine in its place. I make decent money swapping them out.
Know.
What a great pleasure to see a master working.
Like the channel you are one of the best on here by far
I've replaced a bunch of those. I also replace the oil feed lines to the turbos on these guys all the time. They run right over the exhaust manifold and get carboned up from the oil baking inside of them. I have never done a turbo on one that the oil feed line hasn't been plugged up.
My son and his wife both had turbo failures on their encores. One at 27,000 and one at 52,000 last winter a week apart from each other when the temp dropped to -17 F. Without looking at them my self, I told him the main reason turbos fail is oil starvation. I guess the clogged burnt pipes are the contributing factor with the low outside temperature😁😁😁. Luckily both were covered under warranty “ this time”
That's REALLY hard to believe.... A GM with a terrible design.....
Would rerouting or insulating the oil lines fix that? Is it possible? German engineering hehehe.

i used to fix my wife's Pontiac Ventura 2 by tapping the carb with a hammer.
Surprised he didn't just tell the customer to carry a screwdriver with them to tap on the valve when it started acting up LOL. Its a typical GM product, pile of crap. Too bad Buick isn't like they used to be.
Buick used to have the best engine ever: the 3800. Now they're just crap.
This car has "the big", tiny 1.4 litre engine. So even though it is badged as a Buick does that mean really it is a really Japanese Suzuki or a Korean Daewoo, but sold as a Buick under licence in the US ?
