- 92" of snow in 72 hours- we bit off a bit more than we could chew, but what an incredible experience. We took the Mercedes Sprinter 4x4 van to Mammoth Mountain during the atmospheric river, arguably the storm of the decade which should create some incredible ski and snowboard conditions for the 2023 snow season.

07:44 Mammoth Lakes: The Best Place in California
This trip was unreal. Questions? Drop me a line.
I lived in Mammoth in 79. We lived across from the main lodge. In the middle of the night we would be woken up to move our cars so the parking lot could be plowed. We gave up after a month. Our cars were buried in 25 feet of snow. The best part of a snow storm is when the 395 would be closed. We’d have an awesome time skiing in the beautiful sunshine and no crowds! I’ll never forget my years in Mammoth. The best memories ever.
It all was forcasted. Having the propper food and water reserves is up to only you. Stay put and dont put the family and others in danger. Trips for food and goods should happen ahead of time!
Don’t worry, we had all supplies and everything we needed in the event of an emergency.
I was in mammoth lakes in the heaviest snowfall of later 1970s. The snows were thrown on the sides of the roads to near the phone and power lines. In the parking lot at the ski hill the piles were nearing 15 to 20 feet high. Parking spots are valuable because they have to be dug out. When you leave someone else takes your spot. You have to carry a snow shovel when driving, most likely you will need it.
Good points! Sounds like epic times in 70’s.
Being a regular visitor to the Mammoth area this was amazing to see. What a snowmageddon!!! Thanks for sharing! 🙌
Thanks for watching- what a storm!
Mammoth Local of 23 years. I am enjoying how many new videos are coming out this year of Mammoth's God-given snow! We are hearing reports that February will be big snow too. The summer should be awesome with the creeks, lakes, waterfalls full. But, everyone will need to be safe especially with dogs on hikes so they don't get swept into the waterfalls. Be aware! Great video. Thanks for posting.
No doubt- play it safe. Where is the big February data coming from? I saw Mammoth Mountain Life’s video saying the same- I’m all in. Spring and summer are going to be incredible.
@@outdoorbros_ I haven't seen any actual data saying February will be epic. I heard it on Mammoth Mountain Life too. I think he is saying that because typically February is our biggest snow. But, that's all I've heard.
I lived in my van for the last few seasons while teaching at Mammoth. This past year was insane!
This storm was decent but nothing like 2017. 23 feet in 5 days now that's a storm of the decade. National guard brought in to help remove snow. Roofs and decks collapsing. People's beams sounded like scruncing empty water bottles. Shovelers making $100+ hour
That IS a storm- insane!
Yes. And June got 72 inches in 24 hours.
@@GT-mn3bx sounds incredible.
Live in Reno 2017 Mt Rose broke it’s all time record of 660 inches 768 inches for the season.
Thanks for this video. Made me so home sick! I grew up in Round Valley and experienced many storms like this! Glad you all made it home safe
Glad you enjoyed it- what a rad place to grow up! Beautiful out there.
Lived in Mammoth toward the end of the 90s, we had a nice El Niño. While we got tons of snow that year, I remember colder years, earlier, and seeing snow way south of Lone Pine. The trip back and forth to Sacramento was also nuts mid winter. Living in Mammoth was sick.
Edit: My vehicle was an ‘85 Honda Accord. Ripped it up.
I remember big storms from the late 90’s. Definitely hoping we have a cycle of storms like that in the coming years. I bet the 85 accord was a blast in the snow!
@@outdoorbros_ she was awesome! Front wheel drive and a hand brake.
I went up to mammoth Sunday to beat the storm and skiing was PRIME wednesday and thursday. Cool video man!
You scored the best days!
thanks, fun to see !
Thanks Paul!
I absolutely love crazy storms like this. It might sounds strange, but I actually kinda like that cabin fever feeling.
I hear ya… it’s fun to a certain point.
wow super cool ! Thanks for documenting this. Reminds me of being in the Alps during 98/99 season in Feb.
Thanks! Glad you liked it.
That’s was super awesome!!!! Thanks for sharing! Being a mammoth regular I love this
It was incredible- thanks for watching!
Cool! We were there this week and skied ALL TIME snow on Wednesday. Thanks for sharing!
You scored! Wednesday and Thursday looked incredible.
@@outdoorbros_ craziest drop in for Cornice Bowl I’ve ever seen!
@@mottohorn yeah? So rad.
Thank you for making and sharing your video.
Thanks Josh!
Thanks for sharing! Epic!
You got it, thanks for watching!
Wow this is super nuts! Glad you got out safe
Thank you! It turned out to be quite the adventure.
You made it sound like ALL of June Lake needed to evacuate. Not the case. Just certain avalanche prone areas. The SOUTH side of 158. from the fire station down to Double Eagle area.
Ah, got it. Thanks.
When June got 72 inches in 24 hours it was far worse. People forget. Or don't realize this is closer to normal than not.
Hey man! where else can you surf in the morning and then snowboard in the afternoon/evening. California of course!! Love my native state!
I was on my way up when the road was closed.. good thing we flipped at U at Bishop.. great stuff!
It was wild! The northbound traffic was unreal when we went home. Rightfully so, the roads were bonkers.
Very cool video thank you. Would have loved to been there.
Thank you! It was a awesome.
We were up there that same time (arrived Thursday). Tried to bail out on Sunday but had a torn brake line. Paid an insane amount of money to get towed to Bishop. Wound up stuck there till Wednesday anyway. The whole town was filled to the gills with folks trying to get IN to Mammoth but stuck. Wild times
You are a very talented presenter. You can turn just anything into a fun story with excellent editing capability. Curious to see you video when they launch the Specailized later this spring
Thank you! It turned out to be a big adventure, I loved it. What kind of insider info do you have? It’s going to be hard to top what I’m currently riding…
Super cool!!! Thanks.
Glad you liked it!
FANTASTIC VIDEO!! THANK YOU!! REALLY SOMETHING TO SEE. ESPECIALLY LIVING IN SAN DIEGO.🌴
Glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome video. I live in mammoth, it was a fun storm
Thanks, Luke! It was a last. We’re up there all the time- see you around.
Welcome to a real mountain heavy snow winter. That can be the best experience walking in the heavy snows and blizzard conditions up at mammoth. Put on the right clothing and get out and look at the incredible experience.
If you want and miss warm summer mountain biking go back to LA.
This can be an experience of a lifetime. Everyone drops everything and gets out and enjoys the heavy snows and blizzard conditions. It is wonderful digging yourself and others out of the snow and ditches. It can be fun digging people out of ditches and being stuck in snow.
I grew up in northeastern wisconsin. Some of the beat times were during heavy snows and colder temps. With layers of clothing with a warm hat gloves with a jacket with a hood and good boots you are OK to get out and see it all.
It was an awesome experience- thanks!
Here in Chicago we've barely had 2 inches of snow for the season.
Been to Mammoth many times and have seen it dump 3 ft. And then rain for 2 days really strange.🤔😵💫😉
California storms are wild!
Holy snowballs, that is a lot of snow. Is this gonna be a big problem when things melt Will there be floods???
I would imagine that if the temps rose quickly, that would be an issue, but I think we’ll see temps stay low and more snow come in. Could happen in Spring, I suppose.
Great story buddy
Thanks for following along.
Did you have to put on tire chains or got there before they made chains a requirement?
Hi, great video. only question. When you were in that snow did the van get stuck at all? I want t be a sure the 4wd van is worth it or just go for the AWD. Thanks
Thanks! Didn't get stuck, but we had a TON of weight on the van. It just kept going and going.
Storm of the decade, nope 2017 beat this one. Thanks for the video!
I wish I had caught that storm! Thanks for watching- huge fan of your instagram account.
Hi that’s normal weather here in Quebec City 🏙️👍
The only difference is, go to the coast and you can go surfing.
Wild. You guys are another level out there.
Snowboard and surf in the same day?
@@outdoorbros_ Not only that but on good years like this you can ski Mammoth through to July.
@@danielt6689 They have been open 365 before. On 4th of July, we surfed, wake boarded, and watched fireworks on our sleds.
How is it going?!very super vlog-goodbye!-outdoorbros! 👍
Thanks! Fun one to make, for sure.
Check the weather people! when you see the storm coming turn around, don’t put your family in unsafe situation.
We were really safe, don’t worry.
Decade? Nah. It's getting close. Lest we forget 2017...June Lake 72 inches in 24 hours, 246 in Mammoth in 30 days.
Noted.
Thanks for sharing. I was there in 2017 during the bizzard. Got vertigo trying to snowboard in whiteout conditions. Not fun. Going again in early Feb and hoping to get some fresh powder.
Always call first to see if a business is open.
It opens at 5, we got there a few minutes early with other options in mind.
Thanks for the views man!
Thanks for watching!
When our wives ever wrong 😉👍👍
Even when they’re slightly wrong, they’re never wrong 🫠
395 is a highway
Thanks for watching.
No snow at all would be a lot worse.
Not complaining about the snow here- really excited about it, actually.
All the newscasts were there warning you. You should have stayed home and not put your family at risk.
We were fine the whole time, don’t worry.
92 inches and no skiing....no not inspired
Sorry, Pat.... maybe we'll do something in the Wasatch Range that'll inspire you.
Unbelievably irresponsible post, take the family out to get something to eat, don't even check to see if anything is open! Putting your family, other vehicles and the DPW men all in unnecessary danger. And to make matters worse, you do it all over again the next day!
Irresponsible? Not even close. Thanks for watching.
Giovanni’s Pizza is Bomb!🤤👍🏼
So good!
"Yeah but i spent $200,000 on this thing and it is guaranteed to go through anything! Well that's what they told me." Yep and now these things are worth pennies on the dollar with thec recession! Lol!
That's what you got from the video? Bummer.
