- Total solar eclipse as viewed from Jalu, Libya. A ground view shows the surrounding area growing dark as an inset view shows the eclipsed sun. The video spans 7 minutes, starting about 3 minutes before totality.
Dave & Jean Kodama - Наука та технологія
wow those people were obnoxious, but this was by far the best eclipse video i've seen. shows the ground and sky at the same time, exactly what I wanted to see .
Glad you liked the video. Here's another one with both ground and eclipse views:
ua-cam.com/video/jLCEPbxVxds/v-deo.html -- 2010 Easter Island
Keep the sound off if you don't care to hear the crowd. At the 2017 eclipse, if you tend to be annoyed by your neighbors' cheering, be sure to go off to an isolated area! Some info on selecting a viewing site:

I think they were just having fun, maybe an element of human kind you don't subscribe to.
valid point. im watching this next eclipse in a field with a lot of other people, i'll have to keep that in mind when they go crazy loud. haah ;)
wow again. you're an eclipse chaser? where you going to see the one next month? (im going to OR, it's going to be a mess for sure.)
Yes, I fall into that category, but I've only been to 6 eclipses, which is a small number compared to the truly fanatic ones. I'm going to start out in Jackson, WY, prepared to move either east or west depending on weather, smoke, traffic, etc.
Possibly the best solar eclipse video I have seen.
I saw the Big one of 91 more than 6 minutes eclipse, the MOST beautiful thing i ever seen in my life.
Lucky you! That was the first one I tried to see but was clouded out completely. :(
Dave Kodama I wanna go to EEUU next year to see another, great video.
Fantastic video, Dave. Thank you very much for sharing and for your steady hands!!
You guys are complaining that they're "obnoxious" when they are just marveling at a wonder of nature.
i guess im not a match with ppls marveling, particularly shreeking cunts.
too much?
Warfighter Eternal humans have emotions.. Like your emotion of annoyance that you clearly displayed here in the comments . they were amazing and acted accordingly. You seem ignorant af
Some people are obnoxious loudmouths and they're like that all the time. The irony is that many of them tend to think quiet people are being rude.
These are the same people who don't understand why they shouldn't bring their babies with them to a movie theater.
Aegislash's Opinions don't really have to scream at the sky going dark like if it was night time though
They are having nerd orgasms.
After waiting for August 21, 2017 for 13 years, then actually standing under the shadow, every video like this makes me emotional. It really is quite the experience.
yes, tho i didnt see the full totality
See you all in Hopkinsville, KY Aug 21 2017
What I got out of this video is that during the next total solar eclipse, I don't want to be around any of these annoying people!
Sucks to be you. The experience is better when it's shared with others. And I bet you'll be just as vocal if you ever view one.
No in fact I'd rather witness it alone.
I think a lot of people rather be alone, good luck finding a place you can be alone considering EVERYONE wants to see it
its not that hard,
SongBird I live in the country about 40 min south west of St. Louis and the eclipse will go right over where I am. I won't have to drive anywhere to watch it with a bunch of annoying people. You know a lot of people are gonna act like idiots, crying and shit, hugging their family.. I'll be over here posted up with a cooler full of beer and a blunt.
I like how there are two viewings of this from the left hand corner to the actual video of it happening at the sametime
I lowkey was kinda scared to watch this video, all my teachers say you can go blind looking at it and they even said if you're still watching it through a phone
I am directly in the path of the US 2017 which means one thing.
Anybody want to come see some clouds?
Don't be so pessimistic that you don't bother to look!
No kidding. I'm scouting out three locations and going to the one with the least cloud cover.
:D
I laughed wayyyyyy too hard at this
JIMJAMSC im in the 60-70% area
I've been watching this video for years
Right in the path this year... think I'll go to a secluded country road with a LOT of flat clearing. Already planning my various vantage points so I can have options, and will monitor the weather days in advance to find out if I need to rethink my strategies...
dude heed the lessons of this video and avoid annoying ppl like the plague
This was totally awesome! Getting ready to watch it today. Thx for sharing this video.
Who else is watching this before the eclipse?
Great video! Thank you!
We observed this 2006 Total Solar Eclipse in Kemer, Turkey. It was fantastic! Thanks for posting, it brings back great memories!
You're welcome! I'm looking forward to another good one!
Can't wait for the one thats gonna happen in USA in 2017! Ill be waiting for it here in California!
ProudiPhoneOwner I live directly in the path of the shadow up here in Oregon. Already asked for the day off lol
I am waiting for August 21 from Pakistan
ProudiPhoneOwner not me, I'm leaving the Bay area and going to Boise, ID. Actually I will be in the town in Weiser. It will get just as dark as this video.
Bitemyshinny Metalass I live five miles south of dead center in middle Tennessee.
KaliBoyinPDX same! And right on the coast! I cannot wait
So beautiful. Thank you for sharing.

xjubier.free.fr/en/site_pages/solar_eclipses/TSE_2017_GoogleMapFull.html?
Same here, headed to South Carolina for 2017. 2024 I get to stay home in Buffalo.....
Ian Kane I'm in Arizona we will only get 65% of 2017 which means we won't notice much of a difference at all, but 2024 is supposed to pass over here so I'm excited
Amazing video! People celebrating and appreciating the beauty and wonder of the universe in which we live. Love it!!!
I refused to lower my tablet earlier tonight at Grandma's while watching this video because I was tired.
oh...wow... i'm so excited! this years total solar eclipse is on my birthday! that is amazing!
Finally I can see what's going on on earth not just a camera pointed at the sky
I had no idea that there was going to be a place on earth where it would be dark for four minutes due to the eclipse. This was the place to be from my many viewpoints uploaded to youtube.
Wow thats amazing. Just makes me wanna see this solar eclipse that'll happen Monday . :)
April 8 2024?
Oh wait
Parabens!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! vc foi um dos poucos canais que mostrou o eclipse em si, e resultado do eclipse na terra, valeu

Just saw it live from Oregon. What a beauty man

Pretty cool!
Best video ever
thats not screaming thats cherring
THATS AMAZING
Anyone here during the 2017 US solar eclipse?
When I was a child in Turkey , i saw this solar eclipse . That was very exiting.
1999? :>
WOW, I want to see one in person!
OMG THIS IS AMAZING !!!!
so let me get this straight...day time becomes dark when entering the penumbra and umbra?!
Yes, it does as long as you're in the eclipse path. It looks like a sunset all around you.
Totality, the darkness is when it enters umbra. In optics, penumbra is part of the shadow that object partly covers light source in and it a blured part of shadow which for observer in the eclipse is seen as partial eclipse, umbra is part of shadow where object covers entire light source and prevents all the light coming to surface directly (because you still got light reflected from other places, like lit up atmosphere haze in distance aka 360 sunset) creating total darkness,in case of eclipse that is totality. In 3D space umbra is in shape of cone shrinking where penumbra is in shape of trapez spreading out, because moon is too far away, umbra is very small while penumbra covers entire hemisphere of earth and yes that means if you see partial eclipse technically you already in shadow of moon because at location you are you not getting 100% of sun light anymore, ofcorse because sun is super bright it makes not much difference until you it covered something over 60% you start to feel difference in light and it visibly dim over 95%. In case of lunar eclipse earth is a lot bigger then moon and earth umbra can cover entire moon, so observers on moon can usally see solar eclipse totality 2 times per year when ever they are on bright side of full moon.
Who turn off the lights?
Who else thinks that even looking at it though the phone screen it will still cook your eyes
Its beautiful
What if this stays forever? Will people cheer like that?
Except that the Moon only projects a small shadow of total darkness onto the Earth a few minutes wide.
This made me laugh a lot harder than I should've
That's weird because today the solar eclipse, it didn't get dark like that but it was bright af
is amazing
We 'almost' have one coming up on the 20th - 91% in central England, 94% in Northern Scotland.
Best wishes for clear skies!
Dave Kodama Cheers. Going to need it if the one in 1999 was anything to go by!
Special! Even if there is thick black cloud I shall be having two cameras set up, waiting for a break such as you got - you never know with the weather.
Good luck with the clear skies! Here where I live, we have 64% :D
***** It is forecast to be clear - but it was supposed to be clear today also. The problem we have is a band of smog sitting over the UK, with no winds to drive it away. The sun finally broke through the pollution at 11:00. If the same happens tomorrow (and they say that it will), we won't see a thing until after the event. www.telegraph.co.uk/news/11481817/Health-alert-as-potentially-lethal-smog-hits-Britain.html
very good :O
I'm preparing myself for what I'll be in for tomorrow (August 21st, 2017).
Thats dope
Im kind acrying :') I was there when I was about 8? And My dad and mum had a pram to hold me and my brother in. We didn't know what happened There. I remember that dad would say "Isn't it end of the world XD?" (I'm not an libyan person tho we were on holiday) Since I found out that the next solar eclipse is going to be on march 20th 2015 Its going to be so far 3 times I've watched solar eclipse. Most people say that is a lucky range!! Haha :)) Dave thnak you for sharing I've experienced the 1999 Solar eclipse But I was small so didn't get to much watch :/ ;-;
Thank you again!
Hugs from Uk!
Wait 8 in a pram? I might of been walking around. IDK XD
ShadowBloomingVeronika Thanks for your note! I'm glad to hear the video brought back memories for you. That's the main reason why I like to photograph these types of events. It "refreshes" my memories, triggering memories of things which weren't even on the video itself. Best wishes for clear skies and another memorable experience!
Thank you :)! Best wishes. One question, Are you going to film any In the great britain Or anywhere else In the part of the world In different days? I'll try keep up to date about the solar eclipse If you'd wish In any way? Very excited for 20th march! I'll try Capture the event Unless it's cloudy and impossible to catch the Point.
ShadowBloomingVeronika Unfortunately I won't be able to make it out to Great Britain this time around. The next total eclipse I'll definitely shoot will be in August 2017 when one passes through the width of the continental U.S.
As for the March eclipse, even if the sun is behind clouds, stop and look around. Even if you can't see the sun, when the eclipse is close to maximum (I hope you'll be at the northern end of Scotland, at least) the light will be eerie.
ShadowBloomingVeronika P.S. There are many other interesting things happening in the sky besides solar eclipses (admittedly with less impact). I'll be photographing as many as I can and posting them here: astrocamera.net Enjoy!
CARBONDALE, IL, ON AUGUST 21, 2017 - YOU WILL BE IN THE CROSSHAIRS OF WHAT HAPPENED WHEN TOTAL DARKNESS HAPPENED AT THE 3:00 MARK IN THE MIDDLE EAST WHEN THE TOTAL ECLIPSE HAPPENED. IT WILL BE VERY CLOSE TO WHAT HAPPENED IN LIBYA 6 YEARS PRIOR! VERY REALLY!!!
Why the moon moves quickly and stay longer blocking the sun
So did the temperature drop while out there?
Yes, it felt noticeably cooler. Sometimes a breeze comes up during eclipses that enhances the coming.
Am I the only person who's here just because I wanted to see what the eclipse tomorrow will look like??? lol No? Ok....This is pretty cool, though, I can't wait!
1LadyKitha Lol same here
Is beautiful La Serena Chile 2019
Finally I get to see how dark it gets not just the moon covering the sun. I don't are about the moon going over the sun I just wanted to see the sky and everywhere around to see how dark it is.
cool.
totality is something to behold so until u have experienced it and some will on August 21 2017 it will have crossed coast to coast first time since 1918 99 yrs ago and u will see it again in the Midwest April 8 2024 if you can drive to it and see it either in Nashville Tennessee or Cairo Illinois it's quite a show
I forgot to buy my hotel ticket in time now the prices are way High and I'm forced to stay at my mother's place which is close to Boise my plan now is to spend 3 days in Reno and then hit to Idaho on the 20th . On the 21st I'll see the rest of you in Weiser,ID.
Bitemyshinny Metalass Same here man. Couldn't find a hotel within a hundred miles of Hopkinsville, KY and decided to just drive 8 hours on the 21th.
Who else is scared for the one on Monday 😂😭
8/21/2017 - Nashville, TN
J Shepard Hopkinsville, KY for me. Will be staying the weekend in Nashville though.
Robertjr82 Hope you get there the day before. Hopkinsville is going to be insane.
You'll see a partial eclipse in 2017 if you stay in Las Vegas. In general you need to move yourself somewhere to see a total eclipse. On average a given place on earth will see a total eclipse every few hundred years so it's very likely you'll never see one in your life if you don't actually make an effort to go and see one.
Dave Kodama Exactly.
August 21 2017
wow
that lady was really getting off !!!! ooooclipes
Wow,ive never seen anything like this in my life
Mute the volume
cool
Já vi um desses no há alguns anos,e por mais que fique escuro,se nota no horizonte a Luz iluminando aos redores,é mais parecido com o pôr do Sol no momento em que ele desceu ao horizonte.
wwowww beautiful
muito legal!
Anyone going to Madras, Oregon?
I have a backup site there, in case the weather is looking bad in Wyoming at my primary site. I have several articles on planning for this eclipse here: www.astrocamera.net/2017/0821/index.htm
Watching this since its gonna happen in one day😂
When you're about to summon something: 2:02
This is best
My advice to everyone if you want to enjoy a beautiful experience from nature, do not be around people like this!
Por dios es algo impresionante
why is the darkness coming only at the last moment? I heared that some people didn't realize that an annular or very deep partial eclipse was occuring even with luminosity decreased by 95 percent
In partial phases, the sun disappears so gradually that your eyes adapt to the darkness without your awareness. As you get closer to totality, the light looks "odd" with strange shadows, for example,, but if you're not aware an eclipse is occurring, you might not notice it. Only in the last few minutes will you be aware that the sky is darkening, but if you don't have a filter, you still won't be able to look directly at the sun. Only when he sun is totally covered can you look directly at the sun to see what is happening. No photos or video can accurately show what is happening, unfortunately. You have to be there!
And annular eclipses are much less interesting? I imagine its not making people so "euphoric"... Is it true that shadows become "multiple"? and have you ever seen a "beaded eclipse"? I never found a video, I would be really curious
That's right. Annular eclipses are interesting, but not as dramatic as a total eclipse. The shadows are still interesting and fun to play with: astrocamera.net/2012/0520/pinhole.htm A beaded eclipse is probably referring to a total eclipse in which and moon and sun are very close to the same apparent size so that Baily's beads appear all around the eclipsed sun. Such an eclipse would last a very short time and you would have to be exactly on the centerline.
in april 1912 my native town was exactly on the centerline of such an eclipse, but I wasn't born :-D
Makes my hair stand on end...
It looks it was bigger darkness than in the moonless midnight
2020 is the year
Subhanallah...
Will California be like this?
10,000 years ago: WTF! What's happening?! Omf! This is the end, everybody run and hide!!
Today: ooohh... Woahhhh... Woooowww.. ahhhh
Me: wow it's already dark, I slept through the entire day.
why the fuck people so hyped id be scared asf!
Welcome to Indonesia, Eclipse!!!
Sadly,my area will only get 75% of it.
Indonesia, 9 March 2016
iya
I remember when I was around 5 (Ish?) and we had a eclipse. I was scared shitless seeing the sky go dark, now I love these, sucks that it's so rare, but the wonders of the universe are awesome, right?
I would have probably peed in my pants. This is so fucking awesome!
oh look ay the prominences 8 12 o clock totality sound like the same guy that was one the alaska airlines watching watching the eclipse
Indonesia solar eclipse at 9 Maret 2016
Дякую за можливiсть спостерiгати сонячне затемнення !
I find the reactions more interesting than the eclipse.
A total solar eclipse happens every few yrs. How's was this in 2016?
It's 2006, but eclipse happens at least twice a year which full eclipse can happens every year to few years, in 2016 there was total eclipse in Indonesia and surrounding countries, next one will be in 2019 mostly pacific ocean crossing a bit of south america (Chile, Argentina) then 2020 nearly in similar path, 2021 in antarctic, 2023 in Oceania and South Asia (this one will be super rare it will be hybrid eclipse, ancullar in some locations and total in some) and then 2024 in north america again. So eclipses are quite common on earth, thats why no body talk about them until they happen locally as it is not significant event in scale of the earth, same as there no hype for lunar eclipses as they same as common globaly ;p In single place partial eclipse happens every few years, some in so low percentage that media don't even talking about it
I did not go to an eclipse in 2016, but here are some preliminary shots from the latest (2017): www.astrocamera.net/2017/0821/eclipse2017-prelim.htm
1:36 just imagine the moon going backwards and said "sike"
2024 april 8th north America eclipse!
