Their are community PDF's out there that compile ALL the rules for those of you wanting to know. You should still buy the books to support the game and get the fluff but the community PDF is by far the easiest way to play as it's actually organized unlike the GW books.
The original Necromunda starter box from the 90s actually got you started. I really want to get back in with a box but I don’t want to deal with the compromises of playing with either incomplete rules, terrible terrain or a mediocre gang.
@@miniaturesrundown I agree with the above comment. I love the way you guys are presenting the information but the audio dipping is just rough. Have you considered moving the microphones to be positioned in between each other? It may allow you to avoid the issue without having to change your habits. I also just realized that this video is over a year old so you've probably fixed the problem already but I'm gonna leave the comment anyways for the engagement points
Great vid. I recently got into necromunda (my first games workshop game) and it is almost impenetrable for new players. I ended up buying Hive War starter set (delaque and Escher), all the other gangs (Goliath, ironhead prospectors, Cawdor, orlok, van Saar, corpse grinder cult, enforcers), the rule book and all the house books and now I’m slowly making my way through building and painting it all (something else I’m new to). I’ve not even played a game yet and don’t know anyone who does! 😂
lol we are in the same boat mate, I have all the standers gang for Necromunda except Ash waste nomads, corpse grinders, and slave ogryn (on my list to buy) I even have a chaos cult, genestealer cult and an outland gang, and non of my mates play Necromunda, except one but he moved to another country lol I played the original Necromunda 1st necromunda box set releases in 1995, so it was more nostalgia that brought me back, I have played a few games on underhive wars , but that was like over 2 years ago, and the rules have changed a little since then go figure,
This video was amazing!! Been so confused trying to get into Necromunda, and this helped to clear up so many things up. Thank you guys so much! Keep up the great work🙏
You can get the Necromunda Rulebook from GW Digital for US$40, but it is an EPUB3 file, not PDF. You can't buy the Ash Wastes rulebook. If you actually want to use vehicles, the AW only has rules for them not any specific stats. You need The Book of Outlands also, because it has stats for the generic vehicles, and rules to roll your own. If you're vehicle curious, you should be able to use just the base rulebook and Book of Outlands. There are so many flingin' flangin' books, I had to create a Master Table of Contents as to which rules and which characters are in which books. I do own *all* the books in ebook form though. I've still got 3 sets of terrain from the OG Necromunda, plus the expansion terrain set. The only problem is that due to the embiggening of models a lot of them don't fit, or just barely fit underneath the upper levels.
Great video that comprehensively breaks down Necromunda really well. I played the original back in the 90s and it has to this day been the most fun I've ever had with a GW game. When the new game came out, I was put off by the price and by the fact that the rules were basically broken and book after book built on all of the problems the rules had. I almost started when I found an online rules compilation, but then lost interest. Now there finally seems to be an actual rulebook so maybe I'll get into it. The fact that the rules have seemed to change at least three times in six years doesn't bode well. Boxed sets like Ash Wastes that have $100 worth of content for $300 for what sounds like an unplayable environmental damage simulator also don't bode well. We'll see, but either way, your series of videos has sparked my interest harder than it's possibly ever been.
The one nice thing about the rules is that, unlike GW's other games, they haven't actually changed much - the core rules from 2017 are still all completely the same with only a minor change regarding the order of bottle tests at the end of a round. There's just been a lot of rules ADDED, which the newer Ash Wastes book collects into one place.
@Miniatures Rundown So Ash Wastes is the book to buy for the best version of the rules but it still won't have the Dominion campaign. Good to know. Thanks for all the info...
I wanted to start Necromunda but the price and inconvenience scared me away. One Page Rules Firefight does also support gangs, I'm gonna look into that :)
As someone who’s drank the games workshop kool aid for aos and 40K I’m really looking forward to getting into necromunda! And can confirm if the price tag scares you don’t let it save 10 bucks a check for a few checks and your in my friend and these games are well worth what they cost 🖤
I’m just starting out with necromunda with few of my friends and i bought the Hive wars starter set. Mainly because this game is so confusing to get started and with this i would get all I need to test it out. It was 118€ so about 130$. But keep up the good work with your videos.
I just dug out my Necromunda stuff after about five years of not looking at anything. Turns out I have the older hardback rulebook and Gangs of the Underhive, but instead of those I should pick up the new 2023 core rulebook and my specific gang’s “House of….” book instead is what I’m hearing from various sources. And if I want it play outside Necromunda I’d need Book of the Outlands since vehicles sound like at some point they could be pretty cool. Needless to say, the sheer amount of “really you should get these books to play” is very discouraging.
Can you use Infinity models for Necromunda (if opponent agrees)? If so, what gangs do you think the various Infinity factions would fit into? (Hint: This would be an amazing vid for you guys to create, discussing this).
I've actually thought about this before! Anything is allowed if the Arbitrator agrees! It would be interesting to see what gangs would fit with Infinity factions. I play Combined Army myself, so that may be a little harder, but thanks for the suggestion! - Mitchell
I have the 1st box, Necromunda Underhive, I have every gang except, Ash waste nomads, corpse grinders and slave ogryn, which I am going to buy, I also bought every house gang book the old one, think they my be outdated now lol I just need the updated rules, new books got gangs and someone to game with, non of my friends have ever played wargames, They may be interested and play some games I would have to relearn the rules 1st and teach them
@@miniaturesrundown yeah that is true, I try to stick to the minimum rules when starting learning or showing someone how to play a game and then expand when needed
Depends on if the rules are a dealbreaker for you or not - if you like to read through the rules to make a decision on what kind of gang you want to play, grab the rules first. If you know what gang you want to play based on looks, pick up the models first!
I was big into necromunda with the first ed and thought i could show the new edition to my new group. But the price tag and the rules being all over the place is just bs. Its a bummer as i loved it, but unless i find some free pdfs its a hard pass.
Its really upsetting that there is no way to make your own basic gang via the core rulebook. I loved Inquisitor where the core book came with the rules, and ALL the equipment, special skills, and character archetypes required to field a gang of players. What conceptually drew me to Necormunda was kitbashing my own rag tag gang, with its own lore and backstory, and it is really frustrating CIG went the way of ALL their other games by forcing codexes and prebuilt factions. As an old timer I miss the older games where it was on you to make your characters and actually be creative with your modeling. Printing should have been a total renaissance for kitbashing, and instead it feels like GW would rater neuter creativity at every turn to maximize sales.
It is definitely more "funneled" than it used to be - but, the soul of that level of creativity does live on in the Venator and Outcast gangs. Venators especially allows you to go full-out in the "do whatever you want" realm.
insane how complicated to get into they managed to make a fucking skirmish game... and the upcoming box doesn't seem to make it any simpler, with a "self contained dungeon crawl campaign".. Wtf, I just want a starter set :(
Well you just convinced me not to get into modern Necromunda. If a system is that complex to get into that i need a video to explain it and that video tells me that GW sell everything separately and dont even have a rule book with ALL the rules it well im glad i found out now. Just going to play other games or old-school Necromunda. Shame really the minis are fantastic.
This is a great video, but I’m pretty sure the current starter box is Necromunda: Hive War - which is escher vs delaque with some of the zone mortalis terrain *Edit* ah, I jumped the gun. Not the first time, probably not the last! Comes from being also an abused child of Necromunda. Thanks for the video, guys! Necromunda did come out in 2017 with the first starter and then the gang war books
I got my 40k army, I got my AoS army, I got my Kill Team and even my Warcry band (if I use AoS minis for it), was going to get me some Necormunda gang... but it uses proprietary dice. And I have an absolute prohibition against those. I can and have overpaid for many things in this hobby, but dice and rules are off that list.
You guys need to speak into the microphones more, my audio is ducking over here!
Necromunda is such an outstanding gaming system. It’s fun on the surface and the rabbit hole is as deep as you can go. Cheers guys!

Great content but the audio was super inconsistent and made it hard to understand some. Either way i do appreciate the explanation!

We both definitely have more models than we actually play with. Necromunda has some of the best models in the GW range.
