THE POSTAL SERVICE - GIVE UP / 2003 / SUB POP / INDIETRONICA
CLASSIC/10
Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?
NOT ONLY IS THE HAIR BACK BUT THE INTRO IS BACK THE MELON GODS SMILE UPON US
Daddy Stewart the intro is a straight up 10/10 lol
It feeeeeels good.
This may have been recorded a fair while earlier in the year so the hair may be gone by the next normal review - but here's hoping, hoping, hoping for the intro to be back for a while
@@fakenamerealchungus9851 He has his two Kids See Ghosts vinyls in the background, though.
Oh my God you're RIGHT. His cute hairstyle is back then I guess ^^
OMG THE INTRO IS BAAAAAAACK
You were probably a fetus when he last did the tree intro.
Antwan is really taking us back in time, i mean he even has a decent head of hair on him now.
!!!!!!!!!
TheLuiscelaya you’re an asshole
A worthy album for the revival
Thought I'd wake up in 2019 but apparently it's 2012
brokenupbeat
OP is talking about early TND, back in the needledrops days, not the album.
we've been given a second chance
2012 is not early TND. try 2009.
how I do wish
Alessandro Passante more like 2005

What’s going on?
2019: New Year, New Me-lon
He’s evolving
He ages differently to the average mortal
I remember watching this when it first came out. only a few months later, I had to make a double take on when this was released because of those 2 exact things.
I wouldn’t know this was modern if the “Kid see ghosts” wasn’t in the back ground.
But the camera quality is way better now.
same
put the video quality on 144p
Sandra Selke think that is he sequel
He's speaking more confidentiality than he did back then
That intro deserves a classic review
Yellow flannel/10
Wow CGI is amazing the hair looks so real!
releasing Give Up and Transatlanticism in the same year was a real power move
it was a GOOD power move. 2 of my favorite non-hiphop/rap related albums. Also sitting on New Years by DCFC every New Years Eve.
I remember buying them both in FYE that year not knowing they featured the same singer. Just thought I found a new style of music that I liked.
@@maxamillion2140 LOL FYE. Sama here. Even met my future and 2nd failed engagement who directed me to DCFC after hearing I was into DNTEL. Ft Gordon, Ga.

Melon lives in my town and goes to my gym all the time. All he does is come in, plays death grips in his koss porta pros way too loud and screams along to the lyrics while doing skullcrushers for 5 minutes. Following this, he takes off his shoes and follows people around asking them if the growths on his feet are cancerous. Anthony, I am leaving this message pleading you to stop harassing everyone here, you need to go see a dermatologist, no one that goes to this gym can adequately evaluate your foot skin.

You got the wrong guy, you're thinking of Mr. List. He died a couple years ago actually
Underrated.
Wtf you have hair
k dasa he lost his melony goodness.
he hasn't shaved in two months
He doesn't look like a melon anymore. He leveled up to coconut with alopecia.
Hair plugs looking good
@@joshj5742 That's his actual hairline from ages ago, you can see it barely when he shaves. He didn't do any surgery.
HE DID IT THE ABSOLUTE MADMAN
This review prompted me to listen to the album again, something I haven't done for maybe 10 years. I always loved Give Up but I just... Sort of got caught up in my other music tastes. My mom was actually the one who introduced me to The Postal Service. I was transported back years... listening to such Great Such Heights in the car on the way to talking to my mom about... Nothing probably...
My mom passed away six months ago from cancer.
Thanks for this. A beautiful memory lost and forgotten, good moments spent with a loved one to replace the hard ones the prevail in my mind. The first thing that has come back to me from *before* she was sick.
Much love.
Beautiful man, may she rest in peace and God bless you; I am sure she was wonderful. Best wishes my friend :)
Holy shit, this album is 15 years old already, it feels like I just got the tenth anniversary re-release last week. Someone pump the brakes please...
MrPaulcappo I know 😿
MrPaulcappo subtle brag executed perfectly
3JAY
Where’s the brag?
Draevon May Mrpaulcappo clearly wants to show off his music prowess and disguises it as being passionate for this album. In reality he just wants to prove he knew and was an avid listener of this album before Melon put it under a spotlight. Clearly him buying the Anniversary copy of the album and reminiscing about it like it happened just last week is an outright lie, a calculated move he made predicting Fantanos video, and in each scenario a needless comment that is most definitely a brag.
3JAY
Hahaha what?
Very few people are hearing of this album for the first time. It is widely regarded as one of Sub Pop’s classic releases. I remember purchasing the 10th anniversary reissue when I was thirteen or so as well.
The Postal Service isn’t obscure. I really don’t think the op was trying to brag about knowing it. There’s a reason he’s doing a CLASSIC/10 review of it.
THE INTRO HAS FINALLY RETURNED ALL PRAISE THE WOODS
WOOOODDDDSSS
"All praise the woods"
You knew it!
I'M IN THE WOODLAND
Man of the Woods/10
We need a supercut of that
Okay, we have the intro back and the hair back, but we still need the "this review is my opinion, if you don't like it here's a straw" outro, Melon.
Nice profile pic, I was about to make my annual comment asking when Anthony is gonna do a classic review of Jane Doe
@@Nipponcakes Fuck yea, this. Would be awesome to hear his opinion on "Jane Doe," i also would like a classics review of Neurosis' "through silver in blood."
We also need “This is The Needle Drop where we blah blah blah about lah lah lah”
Nah we need the “I can do whatever I want with my own life” needledrop
It's like I'm watching a review from 2011
Bruckner That is indeed the point
It’s hard to believe that this album came out so long ago. This album helped me diversify my musical interests and really solidified my love of electronic music. I remember vividly standing in Target and holding Daft Punk’s Discovery and Give Up debating between which one to buy with my $15 I earned from mowing lawns. I eventually got both but having Give Up on hand throughout a boring suburban adolescence always gave me a angst-y wall to lean on. Love this album it’s damn near perfect in every way.
You worded this beautifully, thank you :)
@@Lunar_Pendragon Did you listen to the Live album that dropped today too which guided you here?
2019 is starting to look good now👍

Why does he look 7 years younger
Hair & vegetables.
because of the intro
He was finally exposed to the sun in the intro.
It’s because of the hair.
I mean... It IS Classics week
I'm sitting here drunk at 2AM on the east coast on new years day, watching this album review,
I love this album, and it's been a while (5ish years) since I've listened through it all the way through.
I love this album because it was one of the first albums when that I discovered while growing up that music can be so mellow but inspire so many melancholy emotions. Like you said if this album wanted to be any more emo it would have been directed by Wes Anderson. And visualizing it now, yes the most emo thing I can think of is a movie by Wes Anderson based around this album. I'm going to listen to this album alone and isolated right now before I go to bed and start the new year. Thank you Anthony for all of your content this year, I just discovered you this year when I was searching for Andrew W.K. videos and your review came up of his latest album.
I hope anyone who actually read this have a prosperous new year. Good luck.
Happy New Year from a recent east coast transplant feeling as lost as ever
either your spell check is next level or your concept of "drunk" is classier than mine but this is a very well written 2 am drunk comment and as one who dabbles in that hour/cadence often I applaud theeeee.
Incredible to see a non-meme comment under a fantonio video. I now have a little more hope in the future of discussion on this channel
Never heard of this album before but after seeing the first couple minutes of this review I got curious and listened to the first few songs. They stuck in my head and I ended up listening to the whole thing today while walking around and riding the bus. I think it's one of my favorite albums now. I just watched the whole review and it's almost unbelievable how accurately it sums up the appeal of this album. It's like all my own thoughts put into different words, especially Anthony's summary and comparison of Nothing Better and Clark Gable. The lyrics are so subtly clever and subversive I'm surprised he was able to so clearly communicate their genius.
It's amazing how well he sums up and explains the albums so accurately. On the off change you haven't heard Random Access Memories by Daft Punk, listen to that and then watch his review. That is another of my favorite albums and he does the same thing.
Melon looking 21 & 31 at the same time
12 & 31
HELL YES THE INTRO

i feel like he talked about it once in a "It Came From Bandcamp" episode
@@chrissvitreoushumour He did review the album but it's unlisted so I don't know what's going on. He called it the "best vapourwave/sludgemetal album of the year"
he reviewed it but then cal scrubbed it for the internet
I had a good boy smile after watching that intro.
Can we just talk about how dedicated Melon is to make content all year for people who constantly meme him, make fun of him & expect more? XD. It must get frustrating after awhile, LMAO.
Either way, love ya, Melon!
I think he likes being memed
@@ConfuzzledTomato perhaps lol.
True, people that discuss every single mark he give, without understanding that it is a fucking personal opinion.
Not rly
This is literally the only album I've ever seen him give a 10/10, and I'm not complaining, this album was my childhood and I still get endless feelings from so many songs off of this beautiful album. It makes me sad that they changed the band name. I wish that they continued this sound.
“A Tattered Line of String” has got such a nice groove to it i don’t care what anyone says
Thank you for doing classic reviews still

1- I can't stop staring at your head.
2- I'm really happy you went back to review this album. It is such an amazing album and way better than anything Death Cab came out with.
3- you should the Manchester Orchestra - Black Mile to the Surface album. you reviewed one of their albums years ago, but this one is definitely much different from their previous work and very worth the listen.
that intro reminds me of you giving mbdtf a 6 shame on you

Yes, intro, yes, hair, BUT YES YES YES, the EXCELLENT OVERVIEW of the music business in the early two thousands, and YES the album review. Top notch Fantano.
This has been one of my favorite albums for many years, and I'm so glad to see you reviewing it.
Who remember the intro like u do

Ft. THE GREAT OUTDOORS
I adore the song “Such Great Heights”, but I never really fell in love with this album the way a lot of folks who love indie and electronic (and both combined) music did. I haven’t listened to this album for easily a decade, and the last time I listened to “Such Great Heights”, it was the cover by Iron and Wine, which is arguably equal to the OG, if not better. I almost always revisit the stuff you cover for classic week, so I’ll have to give it another listen. Who knows, maybe I’ll fall in love with it this time around. Happy New Years ppl. ❤️♾

I was visiting my regular record shop in Nashville back in the early 00s when the guy behind the register asked if I’d heard the Postal Service yet. That High Fidelity-like moment lead to a love affair with Give Up that lives to this day. Excellent review!

This is so petty of me but Jenny Lewis is the female vocalist featured on the album! If I didn't say anything about this my fifteen year-old self would strangle me because this album meant a lot to her 😂 Anyways thanks for showcasing an amazing album!
Jenny is the lead vocalist but Jen Woods does the duet in Nothing Better
@@williamgarnett3705 I stand corrected!
This is not only a great album for what it is, but it’s also great for what it spawned. Stuff like Owl City and Lights probably would never had existed if it weren’t for this album.
I would love to see Daydream Nation from Sonic Youth get the classic week treatment. Personal favorite.
I love how you have 3 vinyls of Kids See Ghosts
He'll probably give those away with something
The plural of "Vinyl" is "Vinyl"

It's a perfect video, my absolute love for that album plus the nostalgic intro and style of the review was amazing!
♥️u, melon for reviewing Give Up. It plays such an important role in my life.
PS: By enlisting important indietronica act, you forgot to mention the most integral: The Notwist (albums Shrink and Neon Golden) laid pretty much the groundwork for TPS in combining glitchy electronics with indie rock (check out 'Pick up the phone').
PLANT YOUR SEED IN ME MELON BOY
That intro gave birth to 1000 new angels
Thanks to the intro 2019 has just started very well. Thank you melon. Happy new year!!!
Thanks Anthony for all the great videos. I went through a lot of them today. Please consider reviewing Chicano Batman's Freedom is Free album. It came out in 2017 but is very groovy, funky and uplifting. Some of the guitar solo work comes off to me as Zappa-esque. It was one of my favorite albums last year. Cheers!

It would have been interesting to see you review this alongside Transatlanticism, which I also think was a fantastic album, and released only months apart. I think the two of them kind of bookmark the plateau in Ben Gibbard's creative peak, and together they kind of set the mood for my transition in to adulthood. To this day, long after I've given a fuck about what DCFC and Ben Gibbard are up to, I continue to come back to these 2 albums again and again.

god i love the district sleeps alone
I had to scroll through 30+ comments about Melons and the old intro being in this to get to someone who actually is talking about this fantastic album. the district sleeps alone is probably my favorite song off the album for sure
King Cobra dude but the old intro is a *CLASSIC*
My two picks are Brand New Colony and Nothing Better. I love the unabashedness of the lyrics in the former, and when I listened for the first time to the quasi-orchestral chord section in the latter I was left motionless. We don't deserve this album, likely. As for the outro... the word I'm looking for to properly describe it must be "cathartic".
I really enjoy your classic reviews.
Great review! Happy to hear your actual recommendations rather than what you feel obligated to review.
You've got dad hair. She's pregnant isn't she?
What do you call a biracial melon?

BOI THE INTRO AND THE HAIR IS BACK!!!!
Also why does it seem like the melon is standing in front of a green screen picture of his room?
This album will forever remind me of driving around at dawn, watching the sunrise while coming down from one of the many speed binges me and my friends used to partake in. That McDonald's biscuit and gravy was always so satisfying even if it hurt my throat because I hadn't eaten in 3 days.

Before I started really being a music nerd and listening to hundreds of albums a year, Give Up was one of the albums I stumbled across naturally, before I even found out who Ben Gibbard was, and I feel lucky to have found it. Most of my sentiments echo yours, except that I also like the relative lack of vocals in "Natural Anthem," since the instrumental build makes that one verse feel more special than it would be if it were sung like the rest of the album.
Can't wait for the Dummy Boy classic review
wtf you're actually concealing your genitals on the intro? wow that caught me off guard
the lighting, the intro, and the overall vibe reminds me of 2012 needledrop era
Just wanted to point out that none of the comments are of the actual review.
Thanks for doing this review fantano, it's cool to get your take on an album I love dearly and get a fresh perspective on the album.

I just relistened to this album after many years since they’re embarking on a 20 year anniversary tour and I’m thinking about seeing them live. I had forgotten how ridiculously good it is! Omg I legit cried several times! There’s so much emotion packed into it and I think I relived the emotions I felt listening to it 20 years ago! Still very classic, very unique and all around 10/10 album.
