I definitely love the Vario strap as it’s red hue really brings out the color of the dial.
I honestly don't know what's better - Vario's watches or straps. Thanks for watching!
The Pierre Paulin jump hour is a lovely watch, had it on my wish list for some time, along with the Merkur compressor style skin-diver, though I have the Pierre Paulin as a considerably lower priority, mostly due to the Vario Navi. I honestly prefer the Vario Navi jump hour, and I really think it is a good alternative to this one to consider, despite that it is currently not available. However, they informed me that they will be releasing another edition of the Navi "soon".
It is considerably more expensive, at around $400, but it also has higher specifications, is a more refined design, and clearly has far superior finishing in comparison, so I don't think the added cost is unwarranted. The dial design of the Popeye editions is quite comparable to the Pierre Paulin in general, at least the compass and anchor seconds hand versions are, and they also addressed the issue with the 'window' on the minute by hand moving it down and making it larger, to allow it to frame the hour window. Plus, the case is absolutely perfect for my tastes.
However, the Vario Navi is quite a bit sportier, at least the Popeye version was, so I can easily see both watches finding a place in my collection.
I got the 36mm version of this watch, the case is more vintage look than the 38mm version, the only cons is the straps quality because it is 1mm smaller, just replace other 20mm straps is fine.
Beautiful watch and beautiful dial. Reminds me of the Undone Vintage Salmon. Love love the crystal. Looks great in your wrist too! I've voted in the community tab!
Thank you for watching! you're right, and what an amazing watch that is! You voted Vario, right? Right?!
I voted cns calfskin leather! 😂
That’s… unexpected 😆 Then, of course, Brits are famous for the way they vote, aren’t you?… 🫣 😢😆

I've been looking for one of these! Gekota watches had one a few years back called the W-01. They had very similar looking dials with a few minor differences. The hour window was higher up, at the 12/60 location, and the hour hand was longer. They also had a version with black and a white lacquer dials. I'm totally kicking myself for not jumping on one of those when I had the chance. They were maybe $300-400? That salmon dial Pierre Paulin just looks like a fun watch!
Wasn't aware of that Geckota model - wow, amazing, particularly the white enamel version!
This one can only be meant as a temporary fix, just scratching a very particular itch. However, I've seen wors cases at triple the price, and that dial is very well machined.
This is a cool little watch!
Regarding alix, i had a small issue.
I ordered a peice with a specific described movement. They changed it without updating the ad. Eventuality alix gave me a full refund without returning the watch. Usually im chill but i asked the seller repeatedly what movement it is but he didnt say so i decided to go head on..
I baught several peices from alix and never had issues before.
This one goes on my wishlist. Thank you for a great review as ever buddy! 🙂
Siiivaan, great to see you again!
I only had one problem with an Ally X purchase (not a watch) - the sell has incorrectly filled in the phone number, so the item was returned. As I was expecting something like 12 different parcels, I only realized it when Ally X have closed the transaction. Otherwise, I believe their escrow system is good at protecting the customers.
@@watchyawant i think within aliexpress there are diffrent vendors that are less or more trustworthy..
This one looks great! Thanks for the review!
Thank you for watching!
Nice review. At the price point, it is excellent value. Have you seen the J1 jumping hour hand watch from Loresum by Jason Chan? It's another relatively inexpensive watch (but nowhere near as cheap as the watch you review here). It is nonetheless well-made and uses the Sellita SW200-1movement. The hour disc is at 6 o'clock and is larger than most date windows, so easily seen. The dial is uncluttered with only batons, no numbers, but still easy to read.
Yeah, I like all Loresum models, but there’s been some shade thrown at them (can’t quite remember who and where said that those are designs for hire with only a few minor alterations and a name slapped on the dial). I genuinely want this to be fake info, as the Loresum owner is very personable and, as I said, I really like what they’re doing.Thank you very much for watching and interacting, do visit again!
If you are lucky enough to get a functional watch from Merkur. 20% chances you get a non-functional watch you can't return because their support is appalling. Read the reviews, folks.
Merkur makes nice looking watches, I'm a fan, but will stay away from them in the future after the experiences with their support. Can't return the darn thing.
Great video, btw. You are getting awesome. More technical details would be great
Wow, thank you! I have to agree I kinda neglected to go too much into detail about the ST17 calibers, as I am not all that familiar with the subject. Once again, thank you, I'm humbled at getting such fantastic feedback!
I have to confess I had an issue with a watch I bought, but I blamed the abject interaction I've had on the store I bought it from (not Allie X). The issue itself was nothing serious - the minute hand was not tight enough and was doing the helicopter thing - I got it fixed in 15 minutes,. Sad to hear about your mishap...
@@watchyawantdid you take it to a watch shop to fix it? I know ali has a 75 day buyer protection so its possible to just return it right? I'm very tempted to buy this with the August sale.
@@nightmonkey07, I haven't taken it yet, but to me it's easier to do that. And that's because I live in a country where watch servicing is really affordable: the cost of servicing a Valjoux movement and fixing a day/date change problem was less than $80. This, therefore, should cost around $10 to fix.
I'd definitely say it looks best on the Wise FKM and Vario straps. Very well documented review. Can't wait to try it on 😅!...and yes, that Breguet hand is really bothering that hour box 😂
Thank you so much! I like it on the FKM a lot, but it's wuite strange to wear a vintage piece on such a modern strap!... So Vario it is :D
Hello. received a watch from Albert Villa art in time. amazing watch and great straps.
Yeah, I remember your previous comment! Really happy you like it! Greetings from Romania, one more time! ❤️
since the salmon omega de ville jump hour is a grail of mine this looked pretty promising, i would however have liked it to have jumped instantly, and for the hour to be visible through the hole in the hand like on the omega
I have this watch. Mine jumps instantly on the hour mark. But knowing Chinese quality control (or lack of it) I imagine this varies from one watch to the next.
Since this is a case used in several Merkur watches, does this mean that their bracelets will fit?
I’m 99% sure it will.
A very interesting piece and great value proposition, but as you pointed out, how the designer overlooked that 'o' on the minute hand obfuscating rather than framing the jumping hour window is almost unforgivable.
It would piss me off once an hour, on the hour, every hour!
I agree, there’s a certain degree of… naiveté in the conception and execution of most Chinese watches, it’s almost like they don’t fully understand a timepiece as a whole, and the other “jump hour” model I talked about in this video is speaking volumes about this lack of understanding.
@@watchyawant _That_ was hilarious.
I mean, even for a Chinese factory it can't be cheap to create a brand new watch featuring an almost unique complication for the market. How can they sign-off on something so fundamentally wrong? It's not like they don't know how analogue watches operate, and anyone who does, should be quickly able determine what is required as indices for a solitary minute hand! 😂
Fortunately, BOTH mistakes are easily rectified, one with a better placed 'o' on the Breguet minute hand (AND long enough to hit the minute markers!), and the other obviously, a whole new indices layout.
Here's hoping both companies take notice!👍
Wow , the hour flip is way out !!!!!
Si eu vreau unul !!! 😍😍😍😁
Ofof, l-am vandut fix pe asta acum o saptamana...
Good review as always. While this watch isn't on my list, the idea here is a good one but poorly executed. Good use of music here too by the way.
So great to have you back! Thank you for the nice words! I agree, this watch is two steps away from greatness.
It should jump instantaneously but it doesn't. For about the first 3 - 3.5 minutes of each hour, it displays the wrong time. Cool idea. Terrible execution.
I agree it's quite annoying, but it's a very quick fix. On the other hand, considering how the minute hand blocks the hour window, I'm quite happy with this oversight, as it allowed me to show the feature. Thanks for watching, hope to see more of your comments!
I saw another review and the hour marker jumped exactly spot on at 60. So it could be a QC issue rather then a movement issue.
i love mine
Wear it in good health!
Too gimmicky. I like to see an hour hand.
It obviously won't appeal to everyone. If having only one hand is the only negative, you might wanna check out their sector dial watch - it's got the same case and dial and I've seen it as low as $90. Thank you for watching!
