How did that “My maid is a communist at heart” line escape all the Best of the Dowager compilations
Because this scene is from the first movie, years after the TV series ended.
Right in front of the King as well 😂
I really thought she called her “a communist tart” lmao
Because most of the compilations only use scenes from the TV series
Bates standing up for Mrs. Hughes at 3:18. He's always a gentleman.
Really is
She was always very kind to him. He did not forget.
100% a top gent
I only noticed now that the King in this movie is the Van Rhijn's butler in the Gilded Age. Talk about a promotion! lol
Lol
Both shows created by Julian Fellowes
Tom nods as slight as he can get away with. 😄
Hearing the Dowager countess speak to King George had me thinking. Dame Maggie almost surely had met the Queen IRL. I wonder how that went?
Which King is he though?
Tom's half arsed bow never ceases to make me cackle
The attention to detail on this show was always amazing. I'm glad the writers/director thought to do that because full deference would've made no sense.
That's hardly a nod.
He is Irish and a republican. They were lucky they got a nod. Look at Mary when she sees it, she is surprised he did any nod at all.
He was REAL for that!!!
Shortly after the Norman Conquest, the English kings were made 'Lord of Ireland' by the Pope, but they were unable to exercise authority outside Dublin. However after Henry VIII converted to Protestantism, he declared himself to be 'King of Ireland'. From then on, the Protestant rulers of England began to gradually take over Ireland, at the cost of the native Catholic nobility & people. Mary I, although a Catholic, encouraged settling of Protestant English & Scottish people in Ireland (thereby laying the seeds for the Northern Ireland conflict). Elizabeth's armies carried out large scale massacres of Irish Catholics in Desmond rebellions. And James I's reigns also saw persecution of Catholics. Cromwell's persecution of Irish Catholics was on par with genocide. And even later, Victoria was famously insensitive towards the Irish famine. So no wonder, the Irish will have 'some' problem in accepting the English kings.
Not the first time Maggie Smith and Imelda Staunton played rivals...
Yep. Their rivalry in the Harry Potter fifth movie is legendary even after nearly two decades.
Yep As Professor McGonagall And Dolores Umbridge
Different universe, same rivalry 😂
I'm not sure rivals is the word I'd use but they certainly make excellent sparring partners
@@livb6945 sparring partners fits more than rivals. Dolores tried to actually maim Harry.
dear Molesley overcome with emotion at the king's arrival🤩
Must have been strange but nice for Imelda Staunton appearing with her husband Jim Carter who plays Carson.
Wish they had a scene together.😅
@@johnnewcomb534they would in the second film. It's sweet and hilarious!
He was the Lion and she Dorothy in the RSC THE WIZARD OF OZ in the 80s....great footage of them on youtube
McGonagall: Here we go again, Umbridge😂
Violet's dress is such a pretty color.
2:00 the fact that Maggie Smith is wearing a pink outfit in that scene is pure gold.
She's stunning in this outfit
@@file13whereareyou she is Maggie Smith.
She is always stunning.
Violet🤗
Imelda Staunton is such a beautiful and talented actress. Her smile is something else❤
Imelda and Maggie, Gosh that is such amount of talent and friendship in just a couple of minutes
Staunton’s voice is so resonant and records beautifully.
3:03 I love Mrs Patmoore
In the movie, during the ball at the house of the Princess Royale and her husband(Lord Lascelles), please take note of the tiara the Princess Royale is wearing.
It is a replica of a real tiara called Queen Mary’s Fringe Tiara. One of HerLateQueenElizabeth’s granddaughters(Eugenia or Beatrice) wore it during her wedding in late 2020 or early 2021. She also was allowed to have one of her grandmother’s gowns altered to be her wedding gown. She was very beautiful, and very happy.
Beatrice was the one that wore it
@@catchingbird1 thank you! I thought she looked beautiful.
Edith looks stunning!😍😍😍
She really does. Blue must be her color
Absolutely
But she’s really annoying in general…
@@TheJabadyshe isn’t annoying
@@malena5026Yes, she is, and she’s always whining, “I don’t understand”…
0:41 That's a wierd succession line. I would argue that Marquis & Marchioness of Hexham would take precedence, followed by Baron Merton and Lady Merton, then Lady Mary Talbot and at last, Mr. Tom Branson.
This doesn't seem to be the type of mistake they would make in Downton Abbey, perhaps Lady Mary gets to be first because she lives in the house and Edith doesn't anymore?
I mean these guys have interrupted shooting to research if peas were eaten at that time...
Well, yes, that would be how it was done, but they obviously wanted to introduce everyone by seniority in the family. The eldest daughter, the next youngest daughter and her husband, the youngest daughter's widower, the eldest daughter's son's grandmother and husband, etc.
@@feverspell - In such matters, especially in the presence of the monarch, what Robert and Cora (or Mary) might want is irrelevant. Protocol for this kind of situation is that everyone is lined up based on precedence of rank, not according to age or the feelings of the people involved. So yes, Bertie and Edith ought to have been first as a Marquess and Marchioness (outranking even Robert and Cora). Then Lord and Lady Merton, a Baron and Baroness. Peers and their wives would be introduced first. Lady Mary merely has a courtesy title, because Matthew died before becoming the Earl, Mary will never even be the dowager countess. Henry Talbot is untitled and thus Mary only has her courtesy title as the Earl's daughter, but is much lower in rank than Edith. Tom is untitled (and Irish), and lucky to even be in the lineup with the family instead of the staff.
Iconic that the Cousin Maude would become the "future Queen" in "The Crown". When multiverses collide 😃😂
And Downton’s Princess Mary was Churchill’s young secretary in Season 1 who died tragically in the smog!
@@stephensheridan1279-- The UK has only a limited number of great actors and actresses to fill many roles.
And lady Maude is married to Carson in real life
I love watching this show Downton Abbey
Goodness me, I recognise so many faces from the magnificent TV series the Crown
Yeah, there are like a dozen crossovers between the two shows.
When Downton Abbey crossed over with The Crown! 😂♥️🥰
David Haig played the part of the King's butler so well. He knows how to play pompous and arrogance.
No fannying about.
ok, time to get the DVD out .... AGAIN ..... LOLOL
The dowager’s curtsy was as deep as lady Edith’s
Lo vedrei milioni di volte...❤
I don't know who's funnier, the Dowager Countess or the real Maggie smith 😂 "I may never rise again" 😂
Guess Professor McGonagall and Professor Umbridge have learned to be a tad bit nicer to each other!
I absolutely died laughing when they went 'wasn't quite what you said when i last heard from you' because Order of the Phoenix is the last time I saw them on screen together 🤣
Lord Granthan played the 'fool' in Nottinghill. A stepup
HOLD ON! Professor McGonagall and Umbridge are here ! Now i gotta watch this show !
THEY SHOULD HAVE AWARDED TOM WITH A KNIGHTHOOD OR NOBILITY FOR SAVING THE KING ugh!!!
I think so too. Plus the way he advises the princess about matters of the heart without knowing who she was until later. He’s a wise soul.
He wouldn’t have accepted it
Wouldn’t have happened, he’s Irish.
They didnt know
And he helped save the princess's marriage😍
Oof. Tom struggled with that nod.
Downtown Abbey movie part 3
So excited
What? When?
Why were the staff so freaked out about the Royal servers? It’s like, if they want to take on the high pressure job of serving the royals, I’ll kick back with my feet up and have a drink😂😂😂
McGonagall and Umbridge together again?
I missed the significance of how Tom was introduced. Mary was announced as “my daughter…”, then Edith was “Marchionesses of H”, and Tom was simply his name and all the family exchanged knowing glances. Should it have been otherwise? Mary I understand because she is the eldest, although I think Edith outranks her (?), but should Tom have been referenced as family?
Tom doesn't have a title, if a commoner man marries a lady with a title they don't get one in return unlike if a man with a title marries a commoner woman. So he was introduced correctly.
The fact he was introduced after Cora's daughters but before Isabelle (who out ranks him) is pretty much placing him at the same level as Mary and Edith, just the lowest ranking member before moving onto the extended family ie Isabelle.
The glances are relief after expecting him to refuse to bow to the King, since he is a staunch anti-royalist.
@@TheSpinDoctor Ah! That makes sense too!
@@jameslyon2338 I see! Thank you for explaining that!
We all know we wanted him anoced as this is( Tom Branson my son and late daughter's husband!!!!)
Tom’s mild nodding of the head 😂 🇮🇪
Great scene 😊
The King and Queen's entourage is quite modest for their stature. Is that same in real life in the 1900s?
That's just the entourage who were allowed to arrive at the front door. Most of the others had to go in by the servants' entrance. I'm not sure what it was like by this point but the Prince of Wales stayed with my great great grandparents for a week or so in the 1880s and they had to build an additional wing just for that.
1:52 - the last time Maggie Smith and Imelda Staunton appeared together on screen like this was in 2007 Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix when Professor McGonagall had an argument on the steps of Hogwarts with Umbridge. So 2007 to 2019, a 12 year wait for this moment to happen for many fans of both women
When Downton crossed over with The Crown! 😉😂🤩😍
“King and Queen of the United Kingdom
❤wow
And once again, Lady Mary seems to have difficulty executing on “Leave it to me.”, although thankfully, to the good this time. Last time we heard that from her, she made things uncomfortable for Carson, Mrs. Hughes, and Cora.
It's correct precedence for a visit like this. The Dowager takes precedence and then the family in age order.
Imelda Staunton! Here playing a Lady in Waiting before she played a Queen! Did she have any scenes with Carson (Jim Carter), her real life husband??
Lord and Lady Merton 🥹💜
❤❤❤❤❤
Note to self …. watch Downton Abbey again .
I can never imagine, Mr. Banister

Why do they call it a parade of the Yorkshire Hussars when the soldiers parading are clearly from the Royal Horse Artillery?
Where is the Abbey?
Highclere Castle is the real life location, it is in Berkshire. Downton Abbey is set in Yorkshire.
This steward shows remarkable arrogance - it's a shame that Carson didn't teach him more energetic manners - but the servants will still get their revenge...

This is already out. Where's the new movie??

They weren't the King and Queen of England. There hasn't been an English monarch's since Elizabeth I. The visiting monarchs were the King and Queen of Great Britain.
