I wonder if Timothy was in need of encouragement when this was written, since it refers to both his grandmother AND his mother in the past tense, ie he had been bereaved of both women. Perhaps he was suffering grief at the time.

Paul gives encouragement and names many helpers, Romans Ch 16 is one example. You may be right though, re bereavement.
