Great tip about the caps as spares! For a second I thought you'd recommend using the caps as a mini-pan...as you had a few lying around. They would fit just a tiny bit of paint, but the flat side can be secured with poster putty (blue tack in some countries) to an Altoids tin, for example. They'll fit the equivalent to a 1/4 pan in terms of content. I am so keen to have those extra thin pans for the portable painter. Sadly, the company is not sending them to Europe yet.😢
For those that are extra FRUGAL-You can then CUT THEM OPEN (carefully with scissors) Down the side and is the paint that is still inside and caught in the neck of the tube. Usually there is still quite a bit stuck in there 🤩
Great tips. Thank you, Lindsay! I would love to hear more about making our own watercolor and also gouache paint kits and what to do to keep them usable over time. I'm wanting to learn all I can before I set up kits for each. I figured I should learn this before I learn to paint with both.
You're so right I broke a old cap just today prying it off I do keep extras and knew this but great tips. I swear I think you've said that before cause I do remember keeping caps for this. Lol 😆
The very tip of a watercolor tube has enough paint to make a sample for a dot card . I was amazed at how much is left in the neck portion of a tube . I usually take a long nose plier and squeeze the neck part of a tube for best results .
@@denkerdunsmuir3370 depends on where you buy it :) there's a lot of houdehold items today out there that can aide you if on a budget; just don't go budget on paper and decent brand brush; even paint doesnt have to break the bank; but working with decent quality paper can save you a learning curve that I had du to poor paper choise.
Great tip about the caps! I screwed down tops of acrylic paints from Arteza “securely” and nearly half of the 72-count set split letting air into the tubes and causing all the paint to harden. So sad, but I wasn’t using them anyway having fallen in love with NovaColor paint, so there you go!!
Ma'am, I can't even use up all my tubes even with my wasteful ways... I weep a little every time I see those nicely arranged half pans that once gave me so much joy upon their arrival and now sit in my 'paints in waiting bin', barely getting scrapped 5% of the pigment at the top... I live to see at least one of my paints getting completely used up...
@@thefrugalcrafter I have started drawing again after a decade, now that I have landed a job and am somewhat stable in life. In my student days, I never used brands better than Camelin (India's commonly used brand). Now that I have my own income and somewhat minimalist lifestyle, I decided to use supplies I never could as a student. Like many I fell for 'I will use student grade before my art becomes worthy of expensive stuff mentality'. Needless to say, my curiosity led me to collect much more supplies than I immediately needed. Despite this, I took inspiration from you in collecting supplies only when I get a good deal. Otherwise art supplies are pretty expensive (even more so in India). My latest purchase is a 12 tube set of Rembrandt single Pigment tubes that goes in Europe for £150 (half of your 48pan set) which I managed to snag for just $55. I referred to your review of this line as not many experiment with Rembrandt. I appreciate your reviews a lot because how unbiased and grounded in reality they are. So thank you for your work❤️
Hi Lindsay, I hope you don't mind me asking, but I'm new to watercolor. I have noted that some brands dry their pans in stages. I bought my first tubes and feel that I should do the same, however, everyone on YT fill it in one shot... please advise🥰
I’ve cut the tube open to scrape out the last of a lotion, cleanser, or makeup. Will this work with watercolor paints? Just cut off the end where it’s crimped closed, cup along the side of the tube to the top, then cut down both sides from there. There’s likely a lot of product at the neck of the tube too.
Does anyone have any tips for what to do when you buy a tube of paint and you find the manufacturer didn't crimp the bottom of the tube and at first squeeze, paint starts running out?

Great tip!
I unfold the end and go at it from there. Oh, tin snips work best to cut open the tubes!
I never thought of saving the caps. Such a fantastic tip!
I remember this advice from years ago. Still great advice!
That tip about the caps is priceless, thanks.
If only I can remember where I put them when I need one 😆
Yep this is why your the Best Frugal Crafter, period!
Yup, I could sure use one of those caps now....
Great ideas
Thanks, Lindsay!

You are so welcome!
🌬🎨Great idea 🎉
Frugal tip indeed 😊
Great tips! ❤
Good tip about saving the caps from empty tubes. I just had a cap break for the first time a couple of days ago.

Love the cap tip!!! Thanks ❤

I just use a toothpaste clamp for my paint tubes.
Grt idea. Is it cheaper?

I never heard of tube squeezers before. Yup. Amazon has many. Who knew.
Thank you
Wow great ideas, thx so much!!
You are so welcome!
Where did you buy the really big palette? It seems to hold a ton of colors and has space for mixing. I love it.
Portablepainter.com or amzn.to/40CsDHw
thank you!
Same with makeup, body lotion tubes & toothpaste...
I cut the tops off and you be amazed at how much more paint is left over.

You can do it! Enjoy the collection by using it. Guilt will not help:)

It depends on how thick the paint is. The more liquid ones you can do in stages. I just top off as needed so I don't have to wait to use it lol!
Thank you 🥰🎨
Looking forward to your putting content on your YT site.
I’d LOVE to know what colors you use in your portable painter. I can’t decide what to put into mine for the most versir mixing variety alreart
I did a video on that ua-cam.com/video/5Krj-1dKPM0/v-deo.htmlsi=LUoxrX9uM1jHWtjg
I always forget to save the caps
Ugh.😮
Don't worry, I always lose the ones I save!

Sure
Where can you buy a tube crimper in person?
Try an art store or maybe a craft store like michaels.
Amazon. Temu?

Use pliers to fold and crimp it as best as you can and seal it with packing tape. It's not pretty but it should work!
