    a couple of corrections for the subtitles:
    2:00 the city of Rome, as well as all Italy, displays almost miraculous features
    2:04 missing sub: I'm not even talking about the beauty of the landscape and of Rome, of Rome's sun and Rome's wind, because it's windy today. it's something unexpected, so I'm very pleased to be here for this interview
    3:20 Althusser says his grandparents came to France in '71, but it's unlikely that it was 1971... he must have meant 1871
    13:22 you can forgive on your behalf, you can't forgive on other people's behalf
    20:50 but he wasn't late. he was speaking for others, not for himself
    22:47 the missing sub should be: sorry, could you first tell us why Lenin used to tell this story?
    23:52 in italian it's "hanno legato (tie) la mia quercia a un asino", not "ridato" (give back), so the correct version is: they've tied my oak tree to a donkey

    what does he mean by "marxist philosophy doesnt exist"?

    • @wetnurseperiod
      @wetnurseperiod 5 років тому +32

      Althusser has a complicated relation to philosophy. On one hand, he views dialectical materialism as the philosophy that provides the theoretical work for historical materialism - the science of history. On the other hand he views philosophy itself as an ideological struggle between various petty bourgeoisie "mere phrases" (to quote Marx in the German Ideology). There can be no Marxist philosophy for Althusser because after the revolution there will be no class struggle and therefore no struggle in ideology (i.e. philosophy). "Materialism" itself is perhaps nothing more than a temporarily useful "phrase".
