The French, as part of their diploma from the Lycee have the so called terminal in philosophy taught by some of best minds in France. Voila the explanation why the EDUCATED French are so famously intellectual and that there are so many well known philosophers going back to Voltaire and Rousseau that had a huge influence on their times down to the present. Like Andre Malraux under de Gaulle. Many also under Mitterand who famously enjoyed discussing philosophical issues. There are some like Bernard Henri Levy that have the fame and swagger of rock stars, if not the regard of critics. Modern European philosophy is said to have begun with a Frenchman, Rene Descartes. First wave feminist thought begins with a philosopher Simone de Beauvoir whose life partner was a philosopher, Jean Paul Sartre. In America we have Thomas Jefferson, not strictly speaking a philosopher but certainly a peer of les hommes des luminaire and a Francophile from the years he lived in Paris; Sally by his side. Too bad we don't have any talking heads to ask an impertinent question to the two leading politicians in our upcoming elections, "what philosophers have influenced you?" Neither has a shred of cultural literacy, both have degrees without learning. They resemble all our recent presidents with the possible exception of Jimmy Carter. I'm not a fan of Al-two-say, too convoluted, too technical.
i really did enjoy watching it specially after reading his autobiography l'avenir dure longtemps He became problematic of course after murdering his wife But the intellectual work of althusser is just like "sparks" as mentioned in this documentary His work is in -my opinion- still revolutionary in understanding marxism. Thank you for posting this ❤
@@outo511 It's half a joke, I have no proof, it's a supposition. Knowing that the c.i.a. was spying all the french intellectuals, among others, and Althusser was a communist, I would say it's a plausible supposition...
