Love the content as always Tomley, thanks for giving Nitro some love, we need all the help we can get. Power to you! Also make sure you can always see the blue smoke of unburnt oil, which is needed to lube the piston.
Seems like nitro is having a bit of a comeback on UA-cam, love it! I got caught up in it and even bought a couple nitro cars. It's been fun to come back to it after abandoning it for brushless motors and lipos many years ago.

I remember trying Nitro with an OFNA 1/8 buggy. Never got it started, the hobby shop couldn't get it running. They even put a brand new engine that was much nicer than the RTR and it wouldn't start. Finally after tinkering with it for about a week and the shop not having any luck, it was returned. I took that money and bought RC10T4 RTR. That experience was enough to turn me off from trying nitro again. With that said, I think it would be a ton of fun to try again. Surely, it was bad luck but to be honest, I never knew about the break in procedures and likely would've ruined the buggy, so perhaps it was for the best at the time.
Hi Tony Alex back at you giving Nitro a chance most people forget dead Niceville is part of the RC world and it's been around for a long time and I'm glad to see that you would not afraid to bring it back on your Channel thank you and you have a good day I love watching your video because you're from England and it's good to see other UA-cam people from other countries thank you Besitos to getting into Nitro🙏👍
Nice. The sound and the smoke is what it's all about. Battery stuff is SO boring. Tinkering is part of the fun. Don't lean it out too much, it will overheat and destroy the engine. I have to drive over 30 miles to a place where I can run my off road buggy. You'd need a truckload of charged batteries to get much run time out of a battery powered one. With nitro you can run it for hours, no batteries, no chargers. Just have several filters with you. In the sand they get dirty fast.
Just got into the hobby and loving your content went and got electric and nitro love how easy electric cars are and how fast they are now but nitro the sound of it round a track is fantastic. Again keep up the great work 👏
Those cheap Force engines can sometimes be absolute gems. I have had both power systems and if you have the time and the place to run it, nitro is more rewarding, plus I like the fact that you do not have to buy more batteries if you want to go out and bash for hours, just bring some extra glow plugs and an extra C-battery or two. I will say however, nitro RACING is very difficult because you need a pit-guy and one that actually knows how to tune on the fly, electric is so much less drama on race day.
That engine on the FTX offroad vehicles starts so easy as long as it's primed, it's always worth checking the idle gap as that is usually set a little on the slow side. Actually it's better to keep the engine warm when running in but not over heating. Your idle is a little low which is why it's trying to cut out
Nice, it runs fine, and tuning is pretty decent. For “drifting” is good with the single speed, but in parking lots or track use for better speed and not ask constantly full rpm from the engine, the 2 speed conversion is a must have.
I like Nitro because you have to do something like after run maintenance and stuff like that, and when you get the tune right its really satisfying to drive
Tuning depends lot on the fuel you're using, if you're using fuel with a high oil content like 18 or 20% (optifuel) then you need to tune for more smoke than fuel that has around 10%. Type of oil is important too, synthetic doesn't give the same protection as castor oil. You want some castor oil in the fuel because it gives better high heat protection and leaves a slight varnish inside your engine which makes it live longer. If the fuel has no castor oil in it I think you should always run the engine richer than fuel with castor oil even if there's more oil in the fully synthetic fuel
Hey there Phil, never hold full throttle on a nitro, when you get to full throttle, back it off to half or so for a second or two then go up to full throttle for a wee second or two, then rinse and repeat and your engine will last for a long time, don’t forget to put after run oil in it when you’re finished driving it. Niiiiiiiiiiice video Phil, really enjoyed it.😊 Ps…..did I mention that I love nitros 😊
what are u talking about? There is absolutely nothing wrong about driving a nitro car like this with full throttle&rpm fully normally. even ten* second straight on a track does not kill engines like this. (ok ten seconds is lonh and not often you see that long straights on tracks but they dio exist. I mean go look proper competition races, no matter if its 1 or 2 speed gearbox, EVERYBODY will keep it pinned on the longest straight and it doesnt do any damage as long as your lubrication is working. co me on man..
I've just got myself one of these today, it does now come with a hole for the exhaust and few little tweaks since this model. Just waiting for some air filter oil to arrive then going to run it in. Brucy bonus for me is I found an RC track just 5 minutes away from me at Shoreham airport. Looking forward to trying it out
Yes, all "fuel" engines should be run a little rich specially 2 strokes because the lube is in the fuel. More lube is better than less lube. PLUS the fuel is also used to cool the engine. Too lean and it will run too hot and while "heat is horsepower" too much heat is death.

Just thinking about run in and tuning the carb for whatever the barometric pressure is plus the smell of the burnt fuel my eyes are burning and I got a headache starting blech
Little tip for first time engine startup, screw the glow plug on all the way but dont tighten it yet, prime the fuel to fill up the lines and carb, then back out the glow plug 1-2 turns before trying to start it. 0nce started tighten the glow plug on and your startups will be easier from then on. Compression on a new engine is usually high, as the rings havent seated in yet, so it struggles to startup. After first startup rings seats in with that initial tank idle run in. The air fuel ratio should be slightly rich so that you get that initial plume of smoke, but thins out. and for high speed you want to carry that same amount of smoke plume. Safer to runner it on the richer side than leaner side, as lean means less lubricant going in, and engine will runner hotter, and eventually warp the cylinder, seize rings or bearings.
I love playing "guess where Phil is today..." I'm going with Matalan and L.A Fitness :) It's the skate parks that my lad wants me to figure out, as he wants to take his scooter there!!! Another great vid buddy!
I love nitro onroad cars. Welcome to the family 😄 you definitely need a notch to vent the exhaust fumes and definitely need cutouts for the engine to breathe.
You're frustrated because you're impatient. Follow the instructions. 99% of your issues will be solved. Way back in the day I ran a ton of cox .049 engines when I was a kid. Soon as you read the instructions ALL the problems were solved. Then I bought a kyosho nitro corvette. Couldn't get it started. Read the instructions, started on the third pull, and did everything right and it is still running great after 20 years. First thing is make sure your ignitor is charged, and secondly, get the freaking wheels off the ground. I see KT firing them up with a foot holding the car down and the wheels on the ground then wonder why it won't start. That's like wondering why you can't walk with your legs tied together. Next most important thing? Get the right fuel. Too much lube=it won't fire Not enough lube=it will burn up.
@Muskoka Mike I was totally impatient. I was also trying to run a car I bought used with zero documentation or experience. I've grown since then and would probably be more successful today.

Im just getting back into nitro after being away from it for many years and this looks like great lttle car to get back into the hobby.
Nice bit of insite into the world of Nitro! I run electric myself, but good to learn a bit about nitro. I can definitely see why they appeal to people.
I raced nitro, best thing I made was a engine heater and definitely get a starter box as them engines can be temperamental at times, weather temperatures dependent, Also when racing I found MX Goggles very handy as when that nitro fumes got in the air my eyes would stream
From experience you NEVER touch the low speed from factory unless it's a very serious problem, you could spend hours if you get this even slightly wrong! Planes, Cars and Helis. Nitro rocks when it's in tune, if your going to commit spend £20 odd quid on a rotor start backplate and use a drill if you have one or buy a rotor starter. Pull starting is awful once it loses tune (and it will, a 10C temp change can be enough, especially for ease of starting)

how far "back in the day"? I've been messing with nitro since the 60's and the issues? 99% user error.
People aren’t as mechanically minded as they were 20+ yrs ago
@@muskokamike127 was what I was goin to say. My airplanes and helicopters are all nitro. And I still have my tether cars I was racing in the 70's.
Nitro vehicles haven't changed for a long time, the FORCE engines are a nice user friendly engine though
@@brianellison3525 I never got into the tether cars, I've seen videos...those things are wicked fast........
My biggest issue with the .049 was I didn't put the cap on the fuel tight enough so all the fuel evaporated and left only the castor oil lol
I really really do like that car even if Nitro is a bit more difficult with starting and everything , but there sound mmmmmman 👌😍
It’s certainly a different experience
Nice one Phil.,a timely video, i am deliberating the purchase of a Nitro, but still unsure of the all the "faffing around" the noise i'm not so bothered about, afterall my Kyosho Mad Van VE has to be noisiest RC i own, so Nitro in the immediate future, maybe🤔
I’ve just got one of these best thing is is to use a glow starter with a external battery
A friend of mine just switched to Nitro.. constantly fixing stuff 😋
Yes.. you need to be prepared for that
dunno why that would need so much break in time, my .60 Super Tigre took 1 ounce of 1/4 nitromethanol mix to get running true... but the have propellers cooling them so..... maybe its just the lack of a cooling system affecting them?
Sweeet video. I love nitro. My TRX4M is the first electric I bought since my 1985 Marui Galaxy RS lol
Cheers dude
Thing looks like it's running perfectly!! I may try to get one 🤙
😇
I've never owned anything nitro, but it just looks like so much of a pain in the ass. This is coming from a car and drone guy that loves tuning betaflight.
COuld you please check if the body posts will line up with standard tamiya bodies? That is probably the first thing I will replace!
Great video Phil!
Excellent video as always! Fun change from all electric!
I am with you though, electric is so much nicer for day to day use.
Man the runtime and quick refuling makes it so that i whant one
Plug and play is the way I prefer
Nitro do sound awesome but the work that goes into them I'm not about
Yeah, I’m a plug n play guy
Used to love nitro back in the day and I'm still nostalgic for them, but I think my neighbours are happy that I've gone electric...
All of my stuff is electric. I would like to try out a nitro Rc car one day though. My only experience with nitro was with a couple of old Cox .049 motors from line control planes. The noise.....once I got them started I kinda wished I hadn't.
It’s certainly a different experience
Nice video!
Is there a 2 speed upgrade kit for this Bonzai Nitro?
Thank you sir!
can I ask, are you still trying that, wfly transmitter? any giid or should I go for a noble nb4.
thank you
Love nitro and the video cheers mate
No probs dude
I've got a nitro savage with the 4.6 big block, been sitting on a shelf for 5 years cuz it's a pain in the butt to operate lol im planning on getting it out and reviving it I'm just not that excited about it lol
I’ve heard they can bit really temperamental
Ha yeah I've got one too and it's been a real shitter to start ever since I've owned it, gone through a few glow plugs and have amassed no end of blisters trying to get it started, even with a starter box it still doesn't start that easy ????????😡😡😡😡
Hey Phil, what weight shock oil would you suggest for the MJX shocks you put on the Gantry 16103 Jeep? The one you reviewed a couple weeks ago.
I'm liking it alot.still not a big fan of the banzai body but it looked a lot a fun .great stuff mate👍
It was fun to drive for sure
@@TomleyRC looked like it..been thinking about getting a nitro for a while.maybe this is the one
Had many problems getting it started like Not starting, puller getting SUPER stiff, air in fuel tubes, "Ready to run" Clearly not you need to buy other parts like filter oil, But besides that i got it running and just breaking it in and works great.
I used to use a bit of two stroke oil on the filter never had a problem lol
Interesting how you can gauge the speed by how high it screams 😅 Great video as always Tomley!
Yes haha
Looks and sounds great 👍. Is it gonna be a keeper with more running vids or just something now n then to dabble with lol 😆
I may give it another go with a 2 speed
I love that sound
That little guy rips.
Great Video! Short Update to my last ZD Racing mx07 comment 😃 I have received mine now and the max5 fits if you cut down the battery holders. Hence you have less space for the batteries, but still enough to fit a normal sized one. 😊 let’s see how mine performs 🤩
Noice…. It’s a beast of an RC Car
looks to be the same engine and some shared chassis parts from the FTX Zorro/Torro nitro
Yes I think it is
@@TomleyRC looking at my Dads Zorro the engine is exactly the same, FTX engines are hit and miss, so you was lucky to get a good one!
@@Chunkiboy-jj8hh force engines are great
@@Nathan-qt2zi They are good when running mint, like any engine ever made, but some of the engines in my experience have been hit and miss🤷🏻♂️
My arm is still sore from 20 years ago. Thank you t-maxx gen 1
The sound is the only good thing about that car🤣...use to have lots of nitro cars back then, but in my opinion guys go gas or electric, much more fun and less problems, but i understand guys with nitro
We were drifting Nitro TC3s 20 years ago. Time Flies.....
Justin love the sound 👍👍👍
Got a remote starter for mine it's an actual game changer😆
I haven't owned a nitro but this dose make me wanna buy one looks a lot of fun but I can also imagine it's a pain when they don't work right lol
So top speed was 34mph, what did the electric version do ?
Sounds awesome, but alot of work, like the new body colour and spoiler.
I think it was less than 20mph
@@TomleyRC so quite a difference then.
Nitro is fun and fast don't get me wrong, but glowplugs and gas are expensive anymore. good video!
Hi phil tell you wat i dont like about nitro is the mess they make of the car and the noise they make and lastly the way they rev on tick over so high
Yeah… even worse when you spill it all over the floor 😂
@@TomleyRC ooohh cant do that its like gold and its more expensive than fuel for yr car lol i prefer electric all day
Sometimes I go out to the field of the helicopter club (more a bunch of friends) but most of them fly big nitro Helicopters, always go home with a bit of a headache because of the sound of the nitro engines.
Also I can do 3 flights with my electric Helicopters in the tune they started theirs.. lol
Yes… it’s hard in the ears
If I had the choice I would only want engines where I can put normal fuel in it maybe with a little oil
2 stroke Petrol/gas are a little easier to maintain I think
Yeah, I love the sound of Nitro Engine..
i did type on your mach e video but don't think you saw it. how can i fix the steering it has only been out one time from brand new and after 3 minutes of running the car it locks up and does around 3 full circles and then unlocks and runs for another 2 to 3 minutes and then locks back up and does more continuous circles please can you advise me of how i am doing things wrong. thank you for any advise
Cool RC and awesome review
Cheers dude
@@TomleyRC 🙂👍
I thank you did a great job on the tune .. it’s sounds Sweeeet. I know your getting the two speed right? Man second gear ⚙️ mite get it moving! 👍
