Pete went to Japan and lost all of his luggage.
But was it the robot dinosaurs running the hotel that pinched it all?

This episode was perfect, if it were twenty-four minutes and forty-five seconds longer. Pleas consider doing an hour format for future episodes.

Long time listener but I had to pop onto the UA-cam video just to say - I wish I could be a fly on the wall when Sarah got to the hotel and was met with the animatronic dinos. What an unfortunate yet hilarious set of circumstances XD
Thanks for the laughs over the years guys!

What you described with that mountain in the UK is how I experienced Hagurosan in Yamagata. Me and my SO spent hours climbing the mountain trail which is an incredibly long 2446 step staircase through the forest up Mt. Haguro. It's incredibly beautiful and peaceful and I can see why monks would take a pilgrimage to the top. You feel a real sense of spiritual connection with nature as you go up. There is a small cafe about halfway up but otherwise it's just you, the stairs, and the trees. My SO had to rest a lot as she is an office worker who sits all day. I exercise regularly so I didn't think it was so bad. But, then we got to the top where there is an old temple complex and started walking around. As we made our way to the back, a bus pulls up and all these assholes get off and swarm the temple fresh from their short 20 min ride up on the bus. I couldn't believe it. Honestly the temple isn't that great, if you remove the hike up, I wouldn't even bother. The best part is walking up those steps.

When I was younger, I used to climb Multnomah Falls in Oregon with friends. On the way there we would stop at Burger King to eat and grab a couple paper Burger King crowns which we put on before our decent back down the falls. We convinced a number of people that they could have just drove up to the top and avoided the steep hike as there was a restaurant up there. It was great fun.

Dear circumspect Chris and punctilious Pete,
This has been another profoundly entertaining and informative episode. When Pete mentioned that he was gonna travel to Japan with only one luggage, I knew that we, the listeners, were in for a bucket full of disaster stories and he certainly did not disappoint. But on the other hand, I am still slightly disappointed how even animatronic dinosaurs were mentioned on the podcast before the return of the mighty bears. If our ever so benevolent supreme leader Broad can lift the bear ban in the next episode, I would be extremely grateful.
    Thank you,
    Sayantan.

I think one thing often overlooked when learning a new language is not just learning the word but also finding out words that are very similar or even homophonic to it so that you know specifically what to avoid so it would not be mistaken for the other one. Another example is kawaii and kowai.
In other hand, there are words where slight pronunciation difference literally is okay and even dictionary-approved, such as sabishii and samishii.

I've only stayed in an APA Hotel once back in 2018. It was was a location in Gion, Kyoto. It is no longer there. I do remember seeing that book in the night stand drawer and thought it rather odd.
I do tend to like Tokyuu Stays hotels. I wouldn't recommend some Sakura Stays though. The one I stayed in Kyoto did not have staff at the counter at all times. I arrived at 2:00PM expecting to be able to drop off my luggage and come back after 3:00 PM to check in. But nope no staff till 3:00PM. And no staff till 10:00 AM to check out.

About 5BY ($33.5M USDish) for 5M people paying 1k Yen. Probably a worthwhile idea as long as the JPN Gov ensures the funds go directly back to the Mt. Fuji facilities and trail maintenance.
Glad you got all your stuff back Pete. Was worried something like losing stuff might happen when you said you were only taking that 1 backpack.

My dad left a new hat (like a brimmed hiking hat) in a Matsuyama car rental office. Through Google Translate, we were able to let the Takamatsu office know about the lost hat when we dropped the car off, and they said they could ship it to our next lodging in Kyoto. Wouldn't let him pay for it, sent it for free!

APA Hotels are the definition of good enough. Though there’s one I though higher of, and it’s the one near Ryogoku Sumo Hall. It’s big, white and green, and bad a way better lobby and an exclusive Lawson in its second floor.

Just a thought on the tram addition to mt Fuji. Yes it would be a change but imo it would provide a way to experience the breathtaking sight for folks of us with bad health and/or disabilities that can’t walk/climb it on their own. Permanent wheelchair users, people who can not walk nor stand for long periods of time, ect. I feel IF it’s done correctly then people who couldn’t have experienced the wonder before may be able to.
But yes absolutely go before it’s ticketed if you can lol
Love the show as usual guys, great work 🖤

If you put a cable car up the side of mount fuji it could actually drastically change the economy of mount Fuji.
See, when you got to the top of Fuji the food you got was some cheap noodles up charged to a premium. They _will_ start using the car to move supplies to the top of the mountain and in doing so will reduce the cost and price of the goods sold, ultimately meaning "better" food will be sold. This can be a good thing, but altitude sickness made any hot meal good so people will complain that they'll stop selling the knock off noodles, surely, but it can be nice to have some actual burgers on Mount Fuji.
This will cause a bit of an oddity as stations will likely have goods transported from the top of the mountain making the 6th stations maybe some of the most costly.
Ultimately I thought there _was_ an admission for Fuji, I thought you paid it through the bus that takes you to the fifth station, which is why an admission price will likely get some pushback they're concerned with. I will say that climbing Fuji and going to the top of Fuji will likely stay separated even with a cable car, as people will identify Fuji's climb as an achievement and the top as a tourist attraction. If I went to Fuji, I would probably be with my 55+ mom and that would definitely require a cable car ride to the top.
Besides that even think of it like this, you had to bring cameras and equipment and books to the top of Fuji, if part of your team had gone up the cable car to meet you there to trade out batteries, swap supplies and have the books for you to sign, it would have made your climb easier. It's not bad for people that want to climb Fuji to have a cable car, and some of them might prefer the expedited trip down.

I went to the Henn na Hotel in Chiba the very same week that Chris did! I signed up to be one of the first to book a room and actually got it! ...The velociraptors couldn't scan my passport though because my name was too long, so a woman popped out of a little hatch in the wall and took my passport - disappeared - and then reappeared with my key card and a million and one bows of apology. Super strange stay though, I rode the elevator with a small family of three on the way up to my room and about an hour later I looked out my window and saw all three of them being taken into an ambulance. It was wild!

Loved the mispronunciation stories and now I shall have "Chinese toilet" in my mind's eye for the rest of the day. I was absolutely frightened of the squat toilets when I was a kid, but at least the ones in Japan are mostly clean -- some real Chinese toilets are scary and filthy AF and I was even more afraid of those.
I think I don't feel racist saying load words in Japanese because I am part Japanese and my ear was trained early on the accent. My mom struggles with imported words sometimes, too, though she speaks both Japanese and English fluently. Probably the worst for her was "biniru" -- the imported word derived from "vinyl". I remember she called me into the living room to look at the magazine and try to figure out what that cursed "biniru" was! 😹
