Jujutsu Kaisen fans: DO NOT GO TO SHIBUYA ON HALLOWEEN! XD On a serious note, everyone be careful, don't crowd and don't push! Let us not forget what happened in South Korea last year. Don't panic.
The high pitched siren thingy is called The Mosquito, and was originally invented and tested in Barry, Wales. Apparently kids have started recording the sound of it and using it as their ringtone, so they can send messages to each other in school and the teachers can't hear it.
A few years ago, I commented on a video the Abroad in Japan channel about how I usually don't subscribe to channels. But on that particular video, Chris mentioned at the end to please subscribe and I had thought that I had never actually heard him ask viewers to subscribe to the channel before. You also mentioned at that particular time UA-cam was being quite shit at promoting your videos. I felt a sense of obligation to subscribe then and there. Alas, history has repeated itself on this podcast, as I click the subscribe button. Cheers for the years of content, Chris and Pete
I'll be going to Shibuya Halloween again this year, but only in the morning. There's a bunch of people in costume early on, so it's festive enough. I'm travelling with my Mom, and as fun as the night is, ain't no way I'm taking a senior citizen to that sea of people. If you're going regardless of the warnings, just remember a few things: 1. Have an exit strategy. 2. Consider walking in and out Shibuya a few train station over, as opposed to direct. You can at least sus the crowd out. 3. You are going for people watching. Don't go to there hungry, expecting to grab a sit-down dinner.
I feel like the Fax Machine needs to become a real fax machine. Finally, the Abroad in Japan podcast can join the esteemed ranks of the US Healthcare system, I assume 90% of Germany and other systems stuck in a time look and have a real working fax machine for people to send things to.
Shibuya is not a venue for Halloween parties. Drinking on the streets is prohibited at night. This message is from Shibuya Ward, which is trying to prevent nuisance behaviors such as smoking, drinking, and littering on the streets during the Halloween period. They are asking people not to visit Shibuya for the purpose of Halloween, as they are concerned about the safety and security of residents and visitors.
Tokyo Decadance was definitely one of the best experiences I had. It was absolutely wild! but wonderful! I don't think I've ever heard anyone else ever mention it! Started with drag puppet story time and absinthe and the tone was set from there!
Hey Chris, I have been watching the RV trip with you and Connor, Pete and obnoxious Ludwig I really enjoyed the game playing. I adored your lovely goblet/ vase. I look forward to see more Abroad in Japan videos. I think those boys get a lot of ideas from you.
Hearing the bit about Gran Class - I had the pleasure of experiencing that last time I was in Japan. Really nice time, as I went from Tokyo Station to Omiya 😂 Trying to explain to the poor attendant who came round to take the food order that I was only going as far as Omiya
If you look up any Short Circuit scenes with Ben, there's often Indian commenters saying his performance and makeup were really convincing, and they also didn't know for a long time.
I am going to Japan in 2 weeks. I was wondering how hard it is to buy a bunch of crap and souvenirs and mail them back instead of having to buy a new suitcase for it?
Hello Camembert Chris and Parmesan Pete, Thank you for today's incredibly informative and entrancingly entertaining episode. If you are ever up for adopting an old lad in his early 20s for your 'UA-cam industry child' experiment, I would like to volunteer. Yours sincerely, Sayantan.
"Grand Class Sloppy Bento" will be the name of my Japanese smooth jazz / thrash metal fusion band. Seriously, though, great content and advice as always, guys!
The shared child raising idea is hilarious. A week with each "parent" is too short though, you all live WAY to far apart. It'd have to to be like a month each. Imagine flying from LA to Japan and back every week 😵💫
I was injured in the Seoul Halloween event last year. I don't drink, and I will be in Tokyo for Halloween. To try and have a good Halloween. The original plan was shibuya. WHERE DO I GO PLEASE
I think it’s funny that the comments are referencing an anime that Chris has no idea about and if he asked Joey to help him, he probably wouldn’t know either since it’s “mid” to him. 😅
Chris has brought up liking Jafar a few times now and I can only hope he’s already or will discover Twisted by Team Starkid. He doesn’t seem like a “musicals” guy, but their stuff is a funny. And if he didn’t like it he could always watch The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals 😂
Question for a future fan read on a podcast maybe? Hey Chris, hey Pete, If I go to Japan as a white, American, trans woman, would you genuinely think I'm gonna be gafaw'd the whole time? Or do they get over it eventually? Widely speaking, do Japanese people react strongly to transgender people in your experience? Thanks, much love for reading
A phonic pun on arigato (Japanese for thank you). Harry gateau. Gateau being a type of cake, or possibly Harry Gâteux, gâteux being French for senile (literally translated someone who soils themselves with faeces)
Chris - you probably thought the noise-making devices were for keeping away insects rather than teens because these devices are generally known as "Mosquito" alarms.
Surprised Chris's parents have yet to go to Japan -- it's been more than a decade! It's quite the contrast from Connor's parents, though Connor did say his parents showing up on his stream was a necessary condition for him to write off their fancy first-class flight. Maybe Chris's parents aren't too crazy on the idea of getting screen time *shrugs*
Sounds like Shibuya is doing the same thing as Daytona Beach did with spring break some time ago. They got tired of the crowds, the damage, and the drunkenness' that strained both the city and residents; The city stopped issuing most permits of any kind, flooded the streets with cops that ticketed for even the most minor thing, hotels stopped renting rooms to anyone under 30, & business curfews that pretty much shut the city down by 10pm. After a few years of no fun, no place to stay, and racking up fines, the kids finally got the hint and moved on.
I was there in 2018, during THEE Shibuya Halloween, with flipping a car, and yeah. Being there first hand was crazy. I couldn't really enjoy myself as there was just people EVERYWHERE, and it was really hard to get around. I still felt safe, oddly enough, but yeah. Never again.
I think instead of Tokyo trying to control the Shibuya Halloween party. They should embrace and encourage the neighborhoods around Shibuya and so it’ll spread out and not be so packed into a small dense area and if company start participating maybe giving out candy or something doing trick-or-treating for adults. That would be totally awesome. I would love that. I would fly to Japan just for that. Adult trick-or-treating through Tokyo. 🎃
I've been listening to the audio-only podcast for 3 years in the shower, so it's weird hearing Pete's voice without being wet all over-not to mention seeing his face!
I've been to japan many times and have yet to be there during halloween. I'll make that happen.. I still like to be around fun.. As someone who loves to spend NYE in time square.. I'm sure i might be able to handle Shibuya. Sure, i'm old but nobody says i have to act my age.
When to avoid Shibuya: Always, hear me out: it's just a crossing with the same shops that are also everywhere else in Tokyo. Take a photo of Hachiko though.
Chris, you've been in Japan too long, you're becoming an Oyaji when it comes to Halloween. A few things to note about Shibuya Halloween. The "Ban" on drinking is a Shibuya city ordinance, and city ordinances in Japan have as much power as a mild suggestion. Also, the comparisons drawn between Seoul and Shibuya are just fear-mongering nonsense. Not only is Shibuya a much wider area, but the Halloween festivities only occupy the West/Northwest area from Hachiko square, the area to the east is virtually empty by comparison. The mayor of Shibuya is just wasting god only knows how much taxpayer money on his crusade against Halloween when festivals like the Sumida fireworks and even the Shibuya New year's eve draw just as many if not more people and leave behind just as much garbage. If the mayor would just work WITH local businesses setting up stands and more garbage collection/recycling/restroom areas they would not only make a tidy profit from the event but keep it much cleaner as well. Also, as for your advice about going to bars, the MOST CROWDED I have ever felt was in the Hub on Halloween many years ago.
@RudeCanine A pop filter is used to remove plosives, while the foam is used for protecting the mic capsule from a wind blast. These are two separate functions that cannot substitute for each other. A pop filter doesn't protect the mic from the wind. And a foam offers a limited reduction of plosives.
Sorry guys not sorry but Ken watanbi is a gold star David Beckham is a bronze not in same league even though I'm a man utd fan love you podcasts and videos
Honestly me and my girlfriend were in osaka last Halloween and that crushing thing happened in Korea it was pretty sobering, I don't get why people would be silly enough to go to high traffic super over populated spots like this on Halloween, it doesn't look pleasant or safe.
Chris might've been making fun of raising a kid to be the best youtube, but some kids are already being in videos from very young age and a big part of their life is public and for everyone to see (and judge). So I wonder how that's gonna affect them later in life.
Banning drinking in the street is a slippery slope IMHO. London started doing it in the centre and now all over the UK city centres are more miserable than ever. If I were a national I'd be out breaking that rule all night but I'm not so I'll just head to Shinjuku like I did last year.
All the time! there is so much to see in Tokyo, you are wasting your time doing simple tourist stuff. I stay away from Shibuya, Ikebukero, Shinjuku, Ebisu and Harajuku unless I have a reason to go. Real city Japanese culture is more than those spots. Being a native New Yorker I would never hang out in the current Times Square.
