I remember the time when our country's official server ended. The owner of the internet cafe that were playing for so long actually bought pizza and drinks for everyone, it was like the last grand event for us. It was the first and the last time I saw so many people crying for an online game's shutdown.
Building blindly is so true back in the days. In 2003 in the Philippine server, I had a thief that has a 40 INT. The reason behind is sometimes when i clicked on a portal, he goes around it instead. I concluded therefore he is stupid so i wanted him to be smart.
hahahaha. i had a mage with high STR. i was so confused why my cold bolt skill is not doing much damage. in my understanding, STR increases ATTACK damage, including the skills that my mage character would use to ATTACK monsters. lol after realizing STR doesn't affect magic, i created a new character and went for the swordsman job. noob moment. XD
Best game ever! Im 33 now and i remember walking a few km to buy my monthly card that would allow me to play. I used to save money from my school lunch to have enough to pay for the game time card. This game defined my life. It really did. I started coding in LUA because of the homunculus scripts. Eventually I started managing bots (sorry) and learned more coding for that. I got the point where I had multiple accounts logged at the same time and was able to do simple MVP's by myself with 4-5 chars logged, e.g., Drake. Now I'm a PhD in Computer Science and the reason why I got so interested in computer science is because of RO. The days of WoE were sacred for me. I can't describe how much this game shaped me and how much I love it. Also, the RO BGM is up there with Zelda OoT as the best game music to this date.
I think I figured out why is it so great and still being play to this day. Ragnarok Online was one of the few games that actually 'was' a true mmorpg (emphasis on the 'role playing' part) and was truly an open world game. When it was first introduced, it lets you create character and just throw you out into the world like 'GO BE SOMEBODY'. No tutorial, no quest line, no hand holding. It was just you, a knife, and cute looking pink slime. If you'd hit the wrong monster, you'll likely die. Go too far away from the city? die. You heard from other people about dungeon and shit and half of it was bullshit people make up. You met people struggling as same as you, you reach out and they reach back, now small groups of community is formed WITH IN THE GAME. There were no discord, only sketchy webboard people troll each other, so you need your friend to come online and meet you in game. You go 'figured shit out' together doing rights and wrong things, mostly wrong. I still remember walking around and meet AGI wizards, Knight with high LUK because some guy said it makes the drop rate better, nobody knew what we are doing but we were stupid together. That is why it stuck with people who experienced it then. That's why I will never fell for any game like Ragnarok again.
@@shanefrey true there is only one ragnarok and unless they remake it i dont think it will ever capture the large audience that it once did. I dont think the grinding part is what older gamers dont have time for otherwise games like elden ring would not be as popular. It just needs to be worth the grind and have a worth while trade off.
Ey, i was the agi wizzard back then, it grant you some flee and you could melee mantises in louyang. 😂i still remember spending hours explaining how genius my build to my friends back then. We all sat in a circle next to the entrance and they WERE, actually focusing and listened to my bs carefully 🤣🤣🤣
@@theocean3364 I was agi luk black smith. My thought process was ‘fast and lucky’ and that’s it. I ended up put a little point into everything in odd numbers. I remember I struggle a lot when Glastheim update came. I never made it past that point lol.
@@shanefrey lol, same as me. I even put up some str for better melee dmg, since im usually run out of mana and have to beat mantis by my wooden staff, like ALOT😂. plus 20 vit is a cherry on top, a perfect survival number for my genius build. I remember one time we made a party to explore magma dung, i tent to stay behind spamming spells and lets my buddies be meatshields, but my casting take soooo long thats either my friends killed all the mobs or we all get wiped before i can finish my cast. Thats when i realized somethings not going right🤣😂
On behalf of the 80s and 90's kids, we thank the creators and developers who had given us a unique, amazing and wholesome RPG that we had built a significant part of our childhood on. Gone were the days where we'd find enough time to hop on to different PC cafes and stay long hours grinding away then completely forget we had school assignments to finish. Hardcore gamers would overnight in some cafes leveling up away. We are forever grateful for Ragnarok bringing us happiness and sadness at the same time.
Philippines, circa 2005, it's raining. Playing in an internet cafe with friends, Prontera theme hits, then internet cafe server play the song "The day you said good night" by Hale, followed by "Tell me where it hurts" by M.Y.M.P. These 3 songs/music mingling will always take me back to my childhood.
It's crazy that to this day, there is no game quite like it. There are games that have one or two similar qualities to it, but none that have all the qualities of it. From the gearing plus card system being the most complicated thing possible. The economy being so intricate and deep and completely player driven. The WoE wars were incredible. The upgrade system was wild with so much risk and gambling, even having to get a blacksmith to lvl 70 to max your dex and luck, and crafting weapons. And the elemental system with crowd control combos such as safety wall, storm gust, Jupiter thunder or lord of vermillion combo felt sooooo good, never seen another game duplicate it. As a lvl 98 wizard (when there were very, very few 99s) with good gear, I could sometimes take out half the other party with a well-timed storm gust and a handful of Jupiter thunders. Spent so many thousands of hours in this game, and still make a max level on a private server from time to time and gear them up, trying to purely hunt for my gears or trading to buy them. Such a special game in my heart, even met my first girlfriend ever in game, we were both just 16 and could only talk on the phone with phone cards
I played a game DOFUS for many years, its also a mid 00s game and the complexity of those games is just something else compared to modern games. The grind was real, and the social aspect was a must have.
@@Victor-kh5rh POE 1 is pretty damn complex, way more than Ragnarök tbh POE 2 is going to be more beginner friendly in that regard, but still maintaining its complexity, and it seems to have a little bit more of the social aspect you're looking for, like the local and online Co-op, and the combat system, where you can combo skills with other players, modify the skills with different behaviors, elements and etc POE 2 is going to be in early access next month iirc
@@Victor-kh5rhman dofus was my childhood and i havent found a game as complete as it was again, and its crazy to me how the studio decided to kill it and force into 2.5D

It is still the best, the cards, the builds, the so slow exp rate and drop rates makes it still above all. But mostly official server now are easy to level up sad. Well maybe this is the weak part of all MMORPG not only Ragnarok.
@@TheZombiesAreComing if you think about it and compare it to other mmorpgs that was released during the early 2000s the character builds, roles, mechanics, events are actually not that simple. under all of that cutesy art style lies a magnificent complex mmorpg. i even remember buying a guide book for the game containing monsters, cards, items/equipments, and character builds. i love this game so much
@@SolojGaming i personally love both the "low rate" and "high rate" servers. each has a certain quirk to it. for most of us that grew up with the "classic" RO some would prefer playing in these low to mid rate servers for the nostalgia while others would want to know how a lvl 500 GX with maxed out equip builds can destroy an imperium under 2 seconds. this is why I love this game. whichever way you want to play it , it still gives a certain kind of satisfaction
This is a great video. I love RO and connecting with people was of my favorite aspects of the game. Maybe I should get back into it, at some point. The only thing that surprised me about your video is that you didn`t talk about the music, which to me was one of the most memorable aspects of it as well. Their music team just crushed and the OST it`s just stellar, it iimmediately transports you to another world.
still not sure why everyone here talking about this , there was website to look for items listed cheapest and location,.. it was a mess honestly walking in pront... im nostalgic about these game but not for these ...
@@blacklabel130 because it was fun shopping for things. Auction houses remove the need to communicate with each other. Searching for items made friends and connections that AHs have no chance of making.
I'm 35, my fiancee and I met in this game when we were 17 and played thousands of hours together until our server closed. I'll be forever thankful to this game and its community, one of the best times of my entire life.
I met so many amazing people on the french server I played on back in 2003, we were too young to think that the server would someday go down, so we didn't keep in touch elsewhere, I still miss them to this day, especially one, David, as we both starded sworman and were at the same level, we would meet from time to time in Old Morroc and duel to see who improved the most, wonderful memories. If you ever come across this, David, and you remember a swordman named Funky-something on a french server, that's me, hit me up, I also miss the amazing atmosphere the game had in the beginning. Still playing it now, but it's not the same, it feels much more lonely, every one is a pro now. Anyway thanks for the video, brings back good memories :)
Man, this game is my first love, I started playing when it came out back in the Philippines. I still jump on to play RO once in a while just to visit. They don't make MMOs like they used to. The grind was real back then. I remember walking around Prontera as one of the first 99 archers back then. It was always me, and this other 99 archer would 1v1 Agi vs Dex it was always even match, good times, every siege I would run into the castle with my LK and pocket healer it was amazing. Thank you for making this video. Alot of good memories in RO
I remember playing as a punching acolyte even before the monk class was announced. I partied up with an INT build swordsman and a pure AGI knight. Damn, I miss those times.
I’m currently a teenager right now and I’ve discovered RO a few months ago. This was the first ever game I got so invested in. I really loved the fact that it doesnt make you stick to one story/quest. You can move around in the world and learn the world on your own. I kind of wish there were more people my age to play this game with and overall have the game be more popular because RO was so social back then (I’ve heard) and now I rarely see people even talking in chat.
Yep I remember walked out of Prontera in to the surrounding forest and see the clusterfuck of high level mobs running around massacring poor novices. Fly wings is the must have item when leveling.
I love and miss RO so much. A game that truly transcended itself with the community it allowed us players to build. I had so many amazing memories and friendships from my time playing RO. I should try to get back into it some time.
I still play ragnarok to this day. bRO server (oficial brazilian server), top 1 damage and refine this month we are celebrating 20 years anniversary on bRO (i've been plaing for 19 with zero quits)
I usually don't leave comments, but this game had provided so much fun and joy in a completely different way compare to other MMOs. I played this game since Official Oceania server opened and it got closed. Then tried a few private servers here and then, went to official iRO server, saw countless of bots..... then went back playing in some private servers. I failed at school due to playing so much of this game just like what you said. Grinded through nights and days, skipped sleeps and classes etc..... If I had the choice I would do it all over again. I hope they can remake it the exact same game with just a touch of better graphics. No other games have even come close to RO. Thanks for the video!
I began playing the iRO beta back in 2001 and later transitioned to euRO, and the memories I’ve made along the way are truly unforgettable. This game has had an incredible impact on my life-starting as a player, forming real-life friendships, and even working with the developers. It’s more than just a game; it’s been a journey. I remember making a random friend in Alberta, and together we set off on an adventure to Prontera. We knew nothing about the game-just names and fragments of conversations from other players-but we explored it all, step by step. That friendship grew over the years, and after a decade of knowing each other online, we finally met in real life. It’s amazing how a virtual world brought us so close. The music and atmosphere of the game still resonate with me. I’ll never forget the first time I entered Morroc. The soundscape, the vast deserts-it was so immersive that it left a lasting impression on me. That experience inspired a real-life goal: to see a desert with my own eyes. Fifteen years later, I traveled to the desert in Morocco, and in my heart, I felt as if I had walked straight into the game. This game gave me unlimited stories and cherished memories. It’s a part of who I am, and it always will be. I will forever love Ragnarok Online ❤
The thing about RO is, every single map and town is memorable. You can easily distinguish the character between each maps you’ve went through. Also this is the first game when you can easily remember the monster’s name, and each design are memorable
I LOVE RO, literally my #1, always will be. Its stat and gearing system was just fun in general, as you leveled you really did feel like you became stronger, and the adventure component was always fun. They kept lower game zones relevant by putting MVP's and Mini bosses in specific maps with rare endgame drops, Cities felt alive and communities were just rock solid back then. I wish games nowadays could replicate the magic RO contained for us. I think the main reason this cant be captured again is the fact that the communities have changed, back then it was just a little more simple and meeting up ingame felt like a real connection. Most MMO's nowadays are FOMO races without feeling out the adventure. Im glad I was able to experience this game.
watching ur video made me assume u r filipino because we pretty much had the same experience in everything u discussed haha I also loved all the RO BGM u used here because its literally all my favorite ones especially the payon theme and the gonryun theme ✨ great video man! 🫡
what made RO so great imo was that it launched at the right time, when online gaming was a new thing, everyone was excited about it and liked hanging around in the game, and there was no pay to win concept. Players nowadays only want to max states in the shortest period of time, there is no experience at all. I am so fortunate to have great memory in RO.
Insanely good game. Keep coming back to it every few years. I think what makes it stand out the most from WoW like MMORPGs is that the world is actually truly open and there are no set level paths and quests. You can go anywhere in the world and kill any monster regardless of it's and your level, if you're strong enough. So knowing the world, knowing where you can take your class and char safely etc. can speed up your leveling process by orders of magnitude! Also WoE is still the best guild vs guild PvP of any game I've seen.
Hearing you describe WoE made me SO nostalgic. The magic of seeing your entire guild Emergency Called like a freaking Avengers Assemble... takes my breath away every time.
Believe it or not, I met my wife in RO. I was 13 years old when all my friends started playing this game so I went along. RO was never officially supported in my country (Brazil) as far as I know, but we had a lot of pirate servers. Although I did like RO, ultimately I found it to be rather shallow compared to single player console games, which I preferred, but I kept playing because of my friends and because the idea of online games was very new and amazing to all of us. In the game I met some people online, one of which claimed to be a girl (althogh we didn't believe it, we thought it was a man pretending to be a girl), but she said she knew who we were and wanted to meet us irl. As it turns out she was a girl from a school nearby. She was exactly as we expected, a plain, nerdy looking girl. Although her personality was very extroverted. At the time I didn't think she was attractive at all. Lol Eventually, I had enough of RO and started playing fighting games in the arcades (the Net Cafe we went to also had arcade machines) while my friends, including the girl, kept playing RO. When we started High School, this girl transferred to our school and was in my class, so we became closer. I managed to convince her to play fighting games with me in the arcades, then I brought her home to play console games... at that point, with puberty hitting me really hard, I admit I had ulterior motives. In my defense she did become a lot more attractive in High School. We kept getting closer until I finally decided to confess almost a year and a half later after meeting her. She accepted becoming my girlfriend, and we've been together ever since. In other words, we were 15 when we started dating. Got married at 19, we never went to college and instead started working in order to get married early. As Christians we can't have intercourse before marriage so because I could no longer contain my lust I had to get married at all costs Lol Now she's a housewife and we have three kids. Although, from our group of friends we were the ones who played RO the least, this game will always have a special place in our hearts because if it was not for it we would probably never have become this close.
Cool story brother. Just a correction, RO was officially realeased in Brazil in 2004, published by Level Up games. It's even still available to play, though it changed publishers some years ago. I remember back then my brother played in their official servers for a while, but as it was hard for a teenager to keep paying the monthly fees, he eventually migrated to (free) private servers.
@@piercecarradine I did not know that. Almost everything I consumed was pirated up to 2008/2009 more or less. Maybe that was because I lived in Bahia at the time.
This game is like a good friend to me. I was one of the only guys that liked the renewal huh? In my group of friends, i'm the only one that misses and still see things about RO. This game means a lot to me, both as a person, but what it represented in my life. I miss those days
This game was my first experience to what I felt like an addiction. I always think about it, I barely can sleep because even in my dream I'm playing it. I always woke up in middle of the night because of something happened in my dream; like I got a super rare card in my dream and then I woke up, or I got my gear stolen in my dream. Kinda messed up if I think about it. But not gonna lie, I missed the game, my friends and the community from that time.
Ah, truly nostalgic, this video trigger so many good memories! Especially when I enter any net cafe in my town and hear the whoozing sounds of teleportation all over the room
Ragnarok Online was the first mmorpg i ever played in my life in the year 2003, so i have a lot of fond memories of this game. And this year I just came back as a casual to check the game out, i still play casually
A lot of people here in germany used to play this. I really like the sprites too. I played "flyff" instead, which is another anime mmorpg. felt like I spent an eternity palying that one back then, but as a young teenager al ot happens in about 3 years.
Ragnarok Online was the single most pivotal point in my life. It is singlehandedly the reason I enjoy videogames as much as I do now. My childhood was horrible, but the friends I met playing this game, the experiences I had, and the escapism I felt while playing saved me from going down a dark path in life. I will never not love the BGM, the sprites, the locations, the enemies. It truly was the greatest MMO of its time. And easily top 5 MMOs ever made.
did you guys have those Ragnarok TV Ads too? In Brasil we had those during the release date period. It was weird, funny, and awesome at the same time to see a game in a TV commercial
Yeah, I'm with the other comment. Here in the Philippines we had a Ragnarok anime on TV, just dubbed. I think the anime was 2004 or 2005. I remember the first time I got online was 2003 November. What a discovery RO was.
RO is undoubtedly one of the best experiences I had in my life. I find myself returning to this game with my friends from time to time, as there's nothing else that resembles it anywhere. Imo, it's the best mmo ever created, but people don't know it / don't try to understand what made RO so different from every other mmo. This game's systems are DEEP.
I never played a game so immersive, too many things left unexplored... non-linear way that caters variety of characteristics and attitude of a player...if you're lazy, laid-back, chill player, you can still enjoy the game... I've seen players just spend their whole day in-game, sitting and just chit-chatting with their friends or strangers in a town and still enjoyed it...some are just wandering in towns begging zenies like actual beggars in the street and stil enjoying the game 😂🤣 some enjoyed scamming people or warping players in a different map only to find it's the farthest dead-end map and there's a player selling overpriced B.wings and you don't have a choice but to buy it or else you have to walk to the nearest town at the risk of being killed by a high level mob and lose some exp 🤣😂 (it happened to me)
Remembering how addicted i was to this game in 04-07 is pretty wild lol i played on the Sakray server and it was incredible, still reminisce about it from time to time, amazing that it is still as busy as it is today.
This game, as an American, was my window to the world. Meeting people from all manner of countries and making friends with them in RO definitely helped shape who I am today.

The music from this game still hits so hard in the nostalgia, as a 13 year old kid in 2003 playing the iRO beta, I trully thought there would never be a game quite like this one.
I might have missed it or it's not really mentioned, but in my opinion, one of the special features of this game is that every skill for each job is usable regardless of your level. Unlike other games where new skills are upgraded or unlocked while older ones become useless, this game allows all skills to remain relevant.
Absolutely. There are so many games out there where skills don't scale with level. I don't know why devs are still having this problem in 2024. In Ragnarok, Bash would still be useful for a high level Knight.
Every single enemy fight felt worth it, there was little guidelines so you just played however you wanted, and the charming visuals. This was peak for me as a lad.
I was a ranked Taekwon and I still cant believe how many hours I had in this game, mostly because I was to poor to pay for WoW. Game sure is a picture of its times, korean grind at its finest, no wonder x100 servers were the most popular.
I think what made RO so popular is that it's essentially the culmination of an MMORPG. It has such a diverse rollout of characters, items, build and unique and multiple ways to play it. War of Emperium is truly an exciting war seeing 50v50 clash. The economy is completely if not all player-based driven giving it a vibrant market. I have yet to see another game truly replicate RO's essence. Many modern games have tried it but none so far has achieved it.
Oh, did anyone else play "Ragnarok Battle Offline"? I think you can still find the unofficial version with translation. It was tons of fun with friends
Great Video, such a Nostalgic Trip xD Really was a great MMORPG despite the ups and downs. Met a lot of people that are still my irl friends today which was an overall bonus this game creates :) PH Player here first 50 of Chaos Server Shadow Circle / Disciples of Zion guild 😎
Here in Brazil, RO was huge. It was one of the first, if not the first online games/mmos to be completely localized in Portuguese and with Brazilian servers. It was paid back then, so not everyone had access to it, but as soon as it went free to play, everyone in my school was playing it. We were making guilds, grinding all day, I remember my parents pulling the plug on my computer because I was playing RO for too long and didn't do my homework lmao Good days.
RO had it's golden ages until 3rd jobs were introduced. Adding 3rd jobs basically was power creep. The guild wars or build wars as i would like to call it was phenomenal. Shows how complex the builds can be. RO was ahead of it's time. Until now, thousands still play it in private servers.
OG Ragnarok was literally my life, I was very young (like late primary school) when I started then continue playing for years. In Indonesia RO was so popular for people of all ages that some eventually got the proper stats for every job, I remember the guide book was our bible. It got very competitive too with big guilds and literal salary in Zeny every time we participated for War of Emporium. Each guild has their "basecamp" where we just chat like in Morroc, South of Prontera, etc and I don't know about other countries' servers but in Indonesia, all merchants always did vending in Morroc that we call it "Pasar Morroc" or "Morroc Market". Even after the OG server was closed, I still play different private servers which made easy (in terms of leveling and drops) and now the mobile version, but nothing can beat the memory of struggle and fun of the OG.
I moved to a location when I was young where there wasn’t any internet service. I would get to play RO occasionally when visiting family on summer breaks or etc. I never got to delve super super deep into the game because of this, but I remember spending so many hours into the game just casually leveling and socializing. God the bgm brings back so many feelings.
Man, RO is nostalgic. it will forever be my favorite game, and will always be close to my heart. thought me so much. from my early days playing in an internet cafe, to the last version of the game that i played in my own personal.pc setup, this game gave me so much fun.
3:38 There's a story but it it's a background aspect rather than foreground and the game focuses more on making your own journey than back to back quests. The game is based on Norse Mythology (hence Ragnarok) which becomes apparent when you visit the world tree and use it to enter Niflheim, the realm of the dead.
All the mmorpg I've ever played since was just different trials to mimic a part of the greatness of Ragnarok Online. Here in Latam (Arg) it was very popular, and it's crazy reading people from all parts of the world with such similar memories
This video really made me want to play the game again. But then remembering how long everything took and how little time you have as an adult made me reconsider. Good times though!
i only ever played private servers, and i never knew the game was actually popular, always thought it was just some lesser known mmorpg , never even knew about the ragnarok world championships, wow, that's amazing.
I never played this game but my classmates were crazy about it back in 2004. There was also an anime for it that aired just after school around 5 pm. The hype died out in 2005 when it got replaced by Gunz the duel, which was the first online game I played. I think there was online currency for RO that was sold in cards with corresponding denominations much like Steam wallets today.
Never played the game since my mom doesn't want to give me money, and just handle money in general when I was a kid, but I would always go to a comp shops with my friends and watch them play. Thats how I got familiarized with the game 😂
Im from chile i got the game on a magazine and got to play the og before ending on private servers later. I remember how you had to travel from city to city if you had no money or you want to use the time to farm on the way, the adventures where awsome finding a lord orc raid when you where on the way to orc dung to farm and joining the fight OMG that was so awsome.
Ironically the mechanics designed to pad the game are also the ones that made me quit the official server: 1) Low exp rates - I played RO for years and never had a level 99 character on the official server. I had a Knight, Assassin, Wizard, Hunter and the highest I got them to was level 77. I just couldn't justify the time to level them up further than that. 2) Low drop rates - Of all the years playing I never looted a Ghostring card in the official server. All the frustration and annoyance just builds up inside of you and makes you question if it's worth it. 3) No respec and card remover - This made everything more time consuming on top of the time you're already spending with your existing characters. Playing in private servers is what made me feel the full experience of Ragnarok. Best of all it's free and I don't have to buy all those prepaid cards anymore. This is what made me addicted to Ragnarok, trying out builds I've always wanted, fighting monsters I could never fight before, having equipment that I could only dream of in the official server.
Man just hearing the music gives me goosebumps! I LOVED this game...a little too much, i was obsessed. I played in college and i was lonely. I basically lived online, and left my room only to go to class or for food. I missed out on alot because i had no self-control; formed parasocial relationships, etc. If i could fo back i dont think i'd play it again. Despite all that its smazing game if you've self-contril and discipline
I probably have half the amount time spent in the game as you but i do miss the social aspect of the game. A lot of other games don't have the social aspect that RO used to have, being highly incentivised to group up to level faster, hang out and chat, etc. I never played official servers and my old private servers are all dead and have been for a long time but I'll always remember them.
I used to play on a private server for around 4 years, it was a small community of only around 150 ppl and I was the only one focusing on High Wizard, after 3 years of grinding I finally got my GTB and once it happened everyone on the server was so MAD than the GM start selling cards and the server came to an end over a month after that. Ragnarok was truly magical
I remember a friend of mine became an information broker because he got a hold of all the guide books. So he didn't need to use his pocket money to fund RO but got it from everyone else.
i remember somebody traded a car for a mvp card 4:26 these kind of simple interaction really hits hard in the heart especially when people are just starting out
The only game that I didn't grow out of. I have been playing Ragnarok since I was 9. I remember how my wallet would be filled with scratch cards (the same as those prepaid dial up cards) that I bought with different arts of the game. Waiting several hours for the patch to finish inside the internet cafe with other gamers. The slow seige of castles during war of emperium and raiding MVPs are the best. When the PH servers for Level Up games shut down the servers, we started playing on private servers jumping from one server to another. Meeting new IGNs, joining guilds, and climbing up the PVP ladder. The unique art style and complexity of this game for an early 2000s game was impeccable. I really have mixed feelings for the mobile version of this game because I think it's not giving the game mechanics of this game justice. From maneuvering your character, skill, and equipment switching ; the mobile version just doesn't cut it. But to each its own. I have loved this game since I started playing it, the memories made with my brother, cousins, and friends while playing this game are priceless.
I remember spending lots of time "flamming" on the Official foruns. Then I had to "work hard" in game to be somebody strong. Find a nice clan. Make it stronger and richer! Forging alliances to attack/defend the castles. The meeting people and chating all night part of Ragnarok was pretty amazing for me.
I remember the time when our country's official server ended. The owner of the internet cafe that were playing for so long actually bought pizza and drinks for everyone, it was like the last grand event for us. It was the first and the last time I saw so many people crying for an online game's shutdown.
That sounds cool. Sad that the game ended, but a cool event. Did everyone switch over to a particular game together after that?
Philippines or Brazil?

Building blindly is so true back in the days. In 2003 in the Philippine server, I had a thief that has a 40 INT. The reason behind is sometimes when i clicked on a portal, he goes around it instead. I concluded therefore he is stupid so i wanted him to be smart.
tangina hahahahaahahhaah
I had a combo monk with luck because I thought it'd increase my card chances lol
Wtf 😂 and here I thought my reason having INT for my thief is to be able to pass the Assassin’s exam
hahahaha. i had a mage with high STR. i was so confused why my cold bolt skill is not doing much damage. in my understanding, STR increases ATTACK damage, including the skills that my mage character would use to ATTACK monsters. lol
after realizing STR doesn't affect magic, i created a new character and went for the swordsman job. noob moment. XD
That is funny 😂
"The journey was the game itself" this hits hard....
Im glad to have been around to play it. i dont think we will have a game like this again.
@@shanefrey true there is only one ragnarok and unless they remake it i dont think it will ever capture the large audience that it once did.

It sounds like you would love PoE
I played a game DOFUS for many years, its also a mid 00s game and the complexity of those games is just something else compared to modern games. The grind was real, and the social aspect was a must have.
@@Victor-kh5rh POE 1 is pretty damn complex, way more than Ragnarök tbh
POE 2 is going to be more beginner friendly in that regard, but still maintaining its complexity, and it seems to have a little bit more of the social aspect you're looking for, like the local and online Co-op, and the combat system, where you can combo skills with other players, modify the skills with different behaviors, elements and etc
POE 2 is going to be in early access next month iirc

It was simple, but it's simplistic charm is what made it appealing.
All I can remember about Ragnarok is the impeccable art direction. So timeless and beautiful.
Agreed, I regularly tune into the RO music. The OST and fan made versions are top notch. (but ofc nostalgia plays into this as well).
Shopping in Prontera was so freaking fun. Felt like shopping in real life. Modern MMOs need to bring this back. No more auction houses.

I get goosebumps every time I remember my RO moments. The nostalgia man! I made a lot of friends and have stayed connected for years.
Damn. Even just listening to soundtracks of each town is sooooo nostalgic and satisfying..
Thanks for making this video. Highschool memories for me. Pretty much everyone , everyone talks about this in school. What a phenomenon in SEA.
Quality RO content, great video! Still love this game now! It's changed so much but I really enjoy it still.
I remember playing as a punching acolyte even before the monk class was announced. I partied up with an INT build swordsman and a pure AGI knight.
Damn, I miss those times.
HAHAHAHAHA What a team!
Ah nostalgia. I remember Deadbranching Prontera in the middle of tbe night to wipe out all the vendors.
HAHAHAHA
Yep I remember walked out of Prontera in to the surrounding forest and see the clusterfuck of high level mobs running around massacring poor novices. Fly wings is the must have item when leveling.
I love and miss RO so much. A game that truly transcended itself with the community it allowed us players to build. I had so many amazing memories and friendships from my time playing RO. I should try to get back into it some time.
I still play ragnarok to this day.

A video about Ragnorok in 2024? Crazy. Loved turning into a fish and smacking people.
Really cool and nostalgic video. Watched the whole thing and made me download iRO instantly
Thank you for this video! RO played a big part of me being a teenager. It fills my heart with joy to see someone talking about it in your way
Insanely good game.
My brother 9 years older played this and got me into this as a 5 year old kid this game is forever engraved into my memory
Lol
Eventually, I had enough of RO and started playing fighting games in the arcades (the Net Cafe we went to also had arcade machines) while my friends, including the girl, kept playing RO.
Wholesome my brother, live the dream for all of us! God bless you and your family.
Ragnarok Online was absolutely released in Brazil officially, I played all the way back when it was a subscription service.
@@mememagician97 I did not know that. I never seem any official release at all until about 2009. Before that, everything I knew was pirated.
@@piercecarradine I did not know that. Almost everything I consumed was pirated up to 2008/2009 more or less.

I loved that game so much. I remember spending several Summers just playing with my friends on a private server. So much fun.
did you guys have those Ragnarok TV Ads too? In Brasil we had those during the release date period. It was weird, funny, and awesome at the same time to see a game in a TV commercial
There was a Ragnarok cartoon here in the Philippines but it only lasted for 1 season I think.
This game's systems are DEEP.
did u spend a lot of real money in it?
I never played a game so immersive, too many things left unexplored... non-linear way that caters variety of characteristics and attitude of a player...if you're lazy, laid-back, chill player, you can still enjoy the game... I've seen players just spend their whole day in-game, sitting and just chit-chatting with their friends or strangers in a town and still enjoyed it...some are just wandering in towns begging zenies like actual beggars in the street and stil enjoying the game 😂🤣 some enjoyed scamming people or warping players in a different map only to find it's the farthest dead-end map and there's a player selling overpriced B.wings and you don't have a choice but to buy it or else you have to walk to the nearest town at the risk of being killed by a high level mob and lose some exp 🤣😂 (it happened to me)
"This game's systems are DEEP". Spot on!! All of it went to the social aspect in a way or the other. So carefully planned.
Now I want to play RO. Love your vidsssss ❤
Amazing video. You took me back to my teenage years 😭😭😭❤❤❤
I was a ranked Taekwon and I still cant believe how many hours I had in this game, mostly because I was to poor to pay for WoW. Game sure is a picture of its times, korean grind at its finest, no wonder x100 servers were the most popular.
This too is my first MMO. I still listen to the music and try to watch videos like this because it helps scratch that itch.
Met a lot of people that are still my irl friends today which was an overall bonus this game creates :)

Here in Brazil, RO was huge. It was one of the first, if not the first online games/mmos to be completely localized in Portuguese and with Brazilian servers. It was paid back then, so not everyone had access to it, but as soon as it went free to play, everyone in my school was playing it. We were making guilds, grinding all day, I remember my parents pulling the plug on my computer because I was playing RO for too long and didn't do my homework lmao
Good days.
I spent years on servers, I loved being priest, but I loved dancer just as much. Good memories, helped me get through some hard stuff.
Ahh ragnarok my gateway to MMOs i was super into it back in the Philippines
Prontera theme still brings back all those good memories
This game will always have a special place on my gaming heart. Still plays it though, on PServers.
I enjoyed just hanging out in our guild hangout area in Morroc. Chatting with guildmates or friends.
I'm watching this while playing Ragnarok Online Eternal Love. Loved this game in highschool and i'm glad I can still be playing it!
Finding out you can get hidden skills through quest was mind blowing back then. Charting maps really made it a journey into the unknown.
I listened to one of my cafe mates every frickin weekend while playing RO, singing "Kapag tumibok ang LUSO!"
Man, RO is nostalgic. it will forever be my favorite game, and will always be close to my heart. thought me so much. from my early days playing in an internet cafe, to the last version of the game that i played in my own personal.pc setup, this game gave me so much fun.

There's a story but it it's a background aspect rather than foreground and the game focuses more on making your own journey than back to back quests.
Argentina had an official RO server? What happened to it?
@@Vyend Creo que no había, pero yo también quiero saber.
This video really made me want to play the game again. But then remembering how long everything took and how little time you have as an adult made me reconsider. Good times though!
RO will always give that sense of great adventure that no other MMO will be able to replicate
I remember stocking up time card just in case of "emergency." Damn, I miss the good old days!
Can you please make a video about the story quest within the game? I'm curious about the added story or lore. thanks! great video btw.
i only ever played private servers, and i never knew the game was actually popular, always thought it was just some lesser known mmorpg , never even knew about the ragnarok world championships, wow, that's amazing.
That was 20 years ago. 😢
RO! The game's soundtrack is still on my phone and my pc ! Hearing that bgm makes me a bit teary eyed and nostalgic.
To this day, I still hope Gravity will one day revive RO and not continuously create crap mobile gacha games.
Ironically the mechanics designed to pad the game are also the ones that made me quit the official server:
1) Low exp rates - I played RO for years and never had a level 99 character on the official server.
What nostalgia. I still remember it took me 3 blacksmith to make in order to know whats the perfect forgesmith stats is
Yesss, RO is my favorite game of all time as well, so many fond childhood memories, so many friendships made, i miss those times ; . ;
I played RO when I was like 16 and then when I was around 22. I never knew what I was doing but it was so fun and looked so cool
I remember a friend of mine became an information broker because he got a hold of all the guide books.
So he didn't need to use his pocket money to fund RO but got it from everyone else.
i remember somebody traded a car for a mvp card
4:26 these kind of simple interaction really hits hard in the heart especially when people are just starting out
3:13 Damn those MAD animations sent me back to my childhood, I remember watching all their fan animations as it was so well made for the time
are those still up? can you link me
RO was my childhood. And yes I still play on private servers from time to time.
