Joffrey Baratheon is dead, Renly Baratheon is dead, Robb Stark is dead and Balon Greyjoy is dead. Only one from the war of the five kings is alive. Stannis! Stannis!
You know, Stannis never actually says that he gave up Proudwing, only years later he's admitting that he thinks Robert was right. But honestly I don't think Stannis ever stopped being the guy that would raise proudwing
Well, I'm not a huge fan of the TV show because it kinda ruined the idea that I had to so many characters, but long before the TV Show was created, I always found Stannis as the King that I always imagined in my mind since I was a child.
Stannis uses his tale of the bird to describe to Davos why he thinks that it's a shame that Proudwing "never flew higher than the treetops," but in reality, that's pretty typical of goshawks. They're forest canopy hunters, never straying far beyond the edges of the forest they hunt in, never rising above the tops of trees to hunt. Goshawks are also known for being much harder to train than your typical hunting hawk or falcon. So in Stannis' story, he successfully trains a bird as a child that even experienced falconers would have difficulty handling, yet because of the discouragement of those around him he couldn't see the true power he held in his hands.
Agreed, plus it shows Stannis must important trait his kindness. Stannis may not have a good Charism/Performance score that draws in crowds put a more personal charisma. Once you see past the stoic and prickly surface you will see a man worth dying for.
In my eyes a king does not need to be a warrior as much as he need only be a man of justice , a man of his word and a man of mental strength. Stannis is all of that and more.
The man who tried to win the throne to save the kingdom, loses, has his beliefs and ideologies tested, meets the son of one of the few men he could fully respect, Jon Snow, son of Ned ‘The Honourable’, who gives him sage advice and teaches him to save the kingdom to win the throne. That is a fucking character arc, DnD, not whatever the fuck you did.
The TV show was foolish portraying stannis as a villain. Such a complex character and d n d portrayed him as the series eveil.why..for fighting for his rights..fighting for truth and justice. Robert could piss in a cup and men would call it wine..yet stannis offers them water and they spuint in suspicion and mutter about how queer it tastes
I dont believe we'll ever see the end of the story. But Stannis deserved the Iron Throne, especially book stannis. Every chapter featuring him was a pleasure

the characterization of Stannis that states Stannis would sacrifice Shireen....that he does not deserve to be king.....that he is deranged........that he is asexual........that he does not love people......that he has no emotion. its wrong and actually the opposite. Stannis has given up on fear. he accepts what is given to him head on. he speaks when he means to and acts when he means to. the maturity of his stoic behaviour has been informed by suffering. Stannis has suffered and now he has risen....he has many enemies....and the friends he has given him their total effort because they confide in Stannis their humanity. Davos never betrays Stannis even when he knows hes wrong. There is no need to. He knows Stannis will hear him out until the end. @@ambience273 It is not clear. But i would say that is because of how careful he is and because of how publicly Robert had sex with people and how it got him killed. Think about it the speculation that Stannis is asexual is started by Tyrion and different information networks because Stannis literally has no weakness other than his wife is not attractive. That does not make him asexual. It means he isn't shallow or with people solely based upon their looks.....why people do not see that is beyond me. Also Stannis does not talk about his partner endlessly. That means he keeps her safe and does not broadcast anything about her. That means he cares quite a bit if he's a target....people not knowing when he and the Queen have sex is extreme care he has taken to hide his whereabouts at all times. He carefully manipulates rumours to undermine his image slightly and pays attention to people who want to capitalize off that. Thats why he respects Tyrion because he would attack his enemy similarly had he been in Tyrions shoes...
@@ambience273 it would make more sense if Shireen did not exist at all. He cannot truly be asexual if he had a child. He's clearly not outwardly seeking women but he had a kid and he seems to care about Selyse's opinion enough to keep Melisandre around.
He should have name tommen instead of robb stark in the leach ritual..those who believe Joffrey and tommen to be Robert's sons would accept stannis as king if Joffrey and tommen dies without issue. Robb would bent the knee to stannis as he is the man whose claim his father supported not the man who called for his father's head

Poor young Stannis. Getting picked on by his brother for having a different species of hawk than him. You would think Storm's End's maester would explain to them that different types of hawks hunt at different heights. Some hawks hunt other birds while bolting through the tree branches, while some soar in the sky and spot their prey from afar. Poor little Stannis...😢

He made Davos his hand because he was loyal and his friend, despite Davos not giving much results at the time. Also this doesn't mean he stopped raising proudwing, or wouldn't still raise it, just that he needs a red hawk to be king.
Except the thing I like about this little speech is that Stannis never actually said he gave up on Proudwing. Because that’s the type of man Stannis is deep down. He’s stubborn. He never gives up. He bends for no one. He’s the type of man who wouldn’t give up on Proudwing deep down.
He is the rightful king that's true, and I really like him and his arc, but it is only logical for the people to hate him. He is not likable, and instead of gaining the people's love and sympathy, he becomes even more bitter and frustrated. Well, Jon warned him to let the wildling have their pride, but Stannis insisted to have them bent the knee and turn away from their old gods. Then he is angered that none of them wants to fight for him, well duhh. Ned was just as dutiful, but showed kindness when there was room for it. Stannis is neither merciful nor kind.
