Since Ono Hawaiian Food in Kapahulu closed about three years ago, this is the only place worth going to. Living in Kapahulu, Ono's was walking distance. Helena's is a lot further, but well worth the drive.
I grew up in Kalihi. Helena’s is a fixture in the community catering to several generations of families including mine. When I fly home from CA I always try to stop in for a meal. Although parking can be an issue, the wait is worth it. As long as they remain open, driving over for a meal is always on my bucket list 🙏🏼.
I remember that whenever I returned to Hawaii, I would get a rental car and head straight to Helena's on N. King Street near Waikamilo. I was born next to Kalihi Stream on Dillingham in 1932 and moved next to the railroad tracks at Puuhale Road in 1939. I left Hawaii in 1953.
Always wanted to try Helena's. The #2 bus goes right by it in Kalihi. I see it every time I go to the bus terminal. The food looks so ono! We love tradition and that place has been around for such a long time. Next visit.
It used to be on N. King St. near Houghtailing. It just moved mauka to School Street. Helena is my favorite since the Seventies. Las Vegas had a good Hawaiian food place on Valley View, a hundred yard from Sahara Blvd, but it closed down a few years ago.
Plenty local business hurting right now. Local people need to support small business before going to one chain restaurant....but eh I been saying Helena’s it’s Heelena’s lol!
Helena’s is the best, I just wish they never sell out to the tourists, the line was too long and those buggas is rude... ❤️ I mean the tourists, not Helena’s people..
Kool story.
ALOHA!!! 😀❤😀🤙

Support local Hawaiian cuisine by dining at Helena's.The food is prepared with much aloha and is so "ono". Mahalo.

Make sure to follow the health guidelines before you try and survive, please. My grandma doesn’t want to get the flu-masks and vaccinations!
Da rice look solid for some reason and first time I see meat dipping in poi but look not bad. Personally I wouldn't have time for that Hehe. 🤔🤙
