My son and I repeated your food tour. My favorite was Alicia's roast pork belly... We went back twice. Pig crack. A pound was eaten in the car before we got a mile away every time.

For all you visitors watching this and planning to visit Oahu, I'll give a short list of places to eat on the way from the airport to Waikiki. Alicia's Market is a favorite of mine. Been going there for over 30 years and it's still good because of the owners. Me and my son just ate there yesterday. FYI there's no seating here. Take out and go find a nice shady spot to eat. Ethel's Grill is down the road literally a couple minutes away, on Kalihi St. A small Japanese type diner that serves local and Japanese food. Very good and it gets very busy especially around breakfast and lunch times. A few more minutes down the road on Kalani St is Kamehameha Bakery. In my opinion the best bakery on Oahu. The poi donut is a favorite there but everything is very good. In the same strip mall is a few more good places. Young's Fish Market has good authentic Hawaiian food. Not like the nasty stuff they serve at the tourist luau. Sugoi is a few doors down and their specialty is garlic fried chicken. Take a short detour but still in Kalihi is The Original Pancake House. Very good breakfast. Up the road a little further is Helena's Hawaiian Food. Another good authentic Hawaiian food place. For shave ice, Waiola Shave Ice is just outside of Waikiki in an area called McCully. Waiola Shave Ice is on Waiola St. Another very good shave ice place is Uncle Clay's House of Pure Aloha. It's in Aina Haina Shopping Center on the way to the blow hole or Hanauma Bay. They make all their own natural syrups and use fresh fruits as toppings. A little on the pricey for shave ice, but it's like gourmet shave ice and hey, you're in Hawaii so why not. Matsumoto Shave Ice in Haleiwa is way over rated and very crowded. It's become just another tourist destination. If you're driving around the island, you'll be driving right past Papaole's in a small strip mall in Hauula off of Kamehameha Hwy. It's a must stop but closed on Wednesdays I believe. Also on Kamehameha Hwy but in Kahaluu is Waiahole Poi Factory. Another authentic Hawaiian food spot. It's just a little reddish shack on the side of the road so be on the lookout or you'll fly right past it. Yes there are tons of other good places to eat but like I said, this is just a short list of places with easy access and not too far off the beaten path.
The joy on Mark's face is so contagious. I find myself smiling whenever he gets excited about a place or the food. Oh, and this is hard to watch when you're fasting.
It’s interesting watching this.. my mom is always making white rice with hamburger Patties and gravy never an egg on top and also loves making spam and eggs! I asked her if she had ever been to Hawaii and she said when she was a little kid my gpa was stationed there for a little while but she was like 4 yo..... crazy how these things stick with you

Stormie Weather yay 😁!! I was supposed to travel this year. And was going to make videos of food when I’m traveling. But sucks what has happened to the world. Have to wait for a while! But this is on my list!!
I lived in Hawaii from age 4-9 and it's one of the most memorable places I lived. My dad and step father are both military so I have moved quite a bit in my life, and my most favorite memories are from living in Oahu. I wish it was more affordable for people to visit or live there since it's such a beauty. I would climb palm trees, swim all the time, ran around barefoot everywhere, and just spent so much time outside since it just seemed to be always gorgeous. Even when it rained, I was still outside. I didn't get to try too much local food since I was a kid and my mom was super picky lol, but my favorite foods come from Hawaii. Meat jun, spam musubi, fried lobster rolls from this place in the mall, malasadas from the food truck at some mall (again I was a kid so my memory is foggy lol), and Kahlua pork. I could eat Kahlua pork with a bunch of cabbage and rice every day. Oahu holds some of my most favorite memories and I hope I can go back one day and take my kids and husband to experience the same joy I had. I'll definitely have to try some of these places you went to!
That was totally Lenard’s Malasadas from Waikele shopping center!! Kalua Pig is the main event in many dishes but Kahlua is like a coffee tasting liquor 😉
I absolutely love watching Mark when he's in Hawaii. I first start watching Mark's videos by per happenstance. I was looking up Hawaiian food to cook at home. After watching a few videos, Mark's video on authentic Hawiian food came up in the thread. I watched him and his grandmother enjoy their meal at a cafeteria style restaurant. I was hooked! I think he won me over because of how wonderful his personality came across through the video and his endearing interaction with his cute as pie grandma, that was the cherry on top! Every time Mark is in Hawaii, I'm always reminded of that first random, wonderful video. 😊😊😊
Hawaiian food is HEAVY. Went there in November 2019 (best time to go!! Not as many tourists) and had all the musts-haves: spam masubi, shaved ice, Loco moco and lots of macaroni salad, katsu pork and chicken and all the poke I could eat. I can't wait to go back. Definitely my favorite place in the world so far!! Went all around Oahu and Maui. We did the popular local spots and also tried the random poke spot in run-down Oahu strip malls. I think I went to a few of these spots actually, Alicia's but they were out of poke at that moment (sold out!). I can't wait to go back for real!! I am going to move there for sure.
You can buy an acre or two here on Big Island for really cheap depending on where you want to live, besides we got the best poke since our part of the ocean is actually pure, no nuclear dumping out here…
I find it too interesting to watch this video and read people's comments, like yours, I feel that this represents a large-scale exchange of culture, since gastronomy is a very good way of interacting with each other, as we do right now.
It would be great if you did a summary of the day at the end of the video and ask your wife as well what place and which food did she think tasted best.
Whenever we eat something delicious we say, "mmm so ono". Japanese locals eat slimy eggs over rice. Hawaiians don't. And we don't eat hamburgers for breakfast🙄.

The thing that makes the food so good is the pride that people put into it. I ate a poke bowl that still haunts my dreams, and the owner’s delight when my eyes went 😍 at the first bite is something I’ll never forget.

For everyone planning on visiting I was here Feb 19/2019. The original Alicia's Market has burned down :(. Fortunately, no injuries in the fire. They now run a little "express" shop right next to the old one and just sell Poke. Unsure as to when they will be re-opened. The person there mentioned they will be at the same original location.
There’s truly no place like home 🏝 So glad you ate at all the local favorites! I also appreciate how you pronounced everything correctly 😊 For other authentic poké spots in Honolulu: - Ono Seafood - Fresh Catch - Tamura’s - Yama’s Fish Market - Off the Hook Poke Market There are many great spots, more but these are popular amongst the locals.
I was happy to see Alicia's Market. and I agree about Ono Seafood! I miss them both so much. The haole poke we get (look up Aloha Poke) on the mainland has driven me to make my own and Ono's Google maps pics are my guide. Today I'm going to eat a pound of ahi!

I find it too interesting to watch this video and read people's comments, like yours, I feel that this represents a large-scale exchange of culture, since gastronomy is a very good way of interacting with each other, as we do right now.

Whenever we eat something delicious we say, "mmm so ono". Japanese locals eat slimy eggs over rice. Hawaiians don't. And we don't eat hamburgers for breakfast🙄.

The thing that makes the food so good is the pride that people put into it. I ate a poke bowl that still haunts my dreams, and the owner’s delight when my eyes went 😍 at the first bite is something I’ll never forget.

For everyone planning on visiting I was here Feb 19/2019. The original Alicia's Market has burned down :(. Fortunately, no injuries in the fire. They now run a little "express" shop right next to the old one and just sell Poke. Unsure as to when they will be re-opened. The person there mentioned they will be at the same original location.

I was happy to see Alicia's Market. and I agree about Ono Seafood! I miss them both so much. The haole poke we get (look up Aloha Poke) on the mainland has driven me to make my own and Ono's Google maps pics are my guide. Today I'm going to eat a pound of ahi!

When you got back to Honolulu, you should visit Ramen Nakamura. The best ramen in Hawaii. Their Ox tail ramen is so delicious!
