  • This is the shortened and redacted version of the full version video on RUMBLE and the complete version on Patreon. - - There are two classic cast bullets for the 45 ACP - 1) the 230 grain RN patterned after the GI Hardball, and 2) the H & G 68 SWC in 200 gr or 185 grain long nose persuasion. Although others have come along, no other cast bullets really need apply. Uncounted millions of these two have been fired in all manner of 1911 and other pistols. And it seems that every commercial cast bullet manufacturer features these two bullets in 45 cal. Let's take a look at the Competition Specialties Quality Cast Bullets H & G 68...

That is one of my pet loads and bullets for .45 ACP. It's been around for over 50 years....likely over 70 too.
    H&G #68 200 Grain LSWC sized 0.452"
    Mixed cases trimmed 0.888"
    COL 1.250" - 1.260"
    Taper Crimp 0.469"
    Alliant Bullseye 4.8 - 5.0 grains
Large pistol primer seated 0.002" below flush
Works in nearly EVERY .45 ACP pistol ever made....including ALL 1911s.
1" or less at 25 yards capable as long as the shooter and pistol are up to it.
Bill Wilson of Wilson Combat pet load for many decades as well..
I learned about it when I was much younger just starting out reloading in 1989 from some old guys who were in their late 60s, 70s and 80s THEN. It's been around the block a bit and is well vetted and proven. They were Bullseye pistol competition shooters and champions. I had/have Springfield Armory and Colt 1911s I used this load in way before I even owned any Wilson CQBs and Les Baer Thunder Ranch Specials.

I was waiting for you say that if you dry those flowers they make good wads for your 12 gauge loads.

I find it interesting there are SO MANY SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT versions of the classic H&G 68. You have to figure each new design offered by different companies offered some advantage and likely disadvantage with each design. Such as a wider metplat may give feeding issues in some pistols ect. Have you noticed a superior design out of them all, or is it just that - certain advantages may offer disadvantages, but depending on your intentions may make a design worth it to one shooter but not another. So far, my favorite version of the #68 mold is a vintage pre Redding Saeco 4 cavity 68. The older Saeco 68 moldss seemed to have wider meplats and more pronounced bevel bases than later Redding version 68s...the one I have makes super accurate PCd bullets. I sold my Lee and other Saeco 68-69 version molds off. I might try the RCBS 452-201 or MP version of 68s next. What is you favorite 68 version?

I cast both those bullets. One is an H&G #68 the other is a Magma Engineering 45233, which is a cast lead duplicate of the 230 gr. GI bullet. Both work great in all my 1911 handguns

Quick question FC, do you set your 45 acp brass in lots according to case length or if its under .898 it good to go?

0.888 - 0.898 is the general target area. For ringing steel and high speed running and gunning it's fine left that way. If you are shooting for accuracy and single ragged holes that ring out the pistol and test the shooter you will have to trim them all to a uniform length. Best to go down to 0.888" so you never have to do it again. The case will wear out before it needs trimmed again. .45 ACP cases last a very long time and go 15 - 20+ reloads usually before they need tossed.

The lee powder die will expand the case mouth.

I believe I was given some of those a decade or more and they fed just fine and very accurate. I've been casting Lee's TL ( tumble lube ) 225-230 something grain (depending on lead mix used )round nose sized to .452 usually but have had real success at sizing to .451 with some loads depending on powder and charge weight and believe it or not on lead mix. I never drop below 14.5 bhn and usually up around 16.5 . They do cut a fair hole but not like the semi wad-cutters do.

I didn't learn anything watching anyone on UA-cam. I started shooting in 1982 and started reloading and bullet casting in 1989. I liked Elvis Ammo though...he was a funny guy and made me laugh. He also was cool to hang out with.
