- C3 Vertebrae Injury, C4 Vertebrae Injury, and C5 Vertebrae Injury are all defined. C3, C4, & C5 Vertebrae Anatomy is described. Cervical Spinal Injury treatments, as well as C3 Vertebrae, C4 Vertebrae, C5 Vertebrae recoveries are all discussed.
C3 Spinal Vertebra Defined
The C2 - C3 junction of the spinal column is important, as this is where flexion and extension occur (flexion is the movement of the chin toward the chest and extension is the backward movement of the head). Patients with a cervical vertebrae injury at the C3 level will have limited mobility in both their flexion and extension.
The C3 vertebra is in line with the lower section of the jaw and hyoid bone, which holds the tongue in place. The flexible C3 vertebrae helps aid in the bending and rotation of the neck.
C4 Spinal Vertebra Defined
This central portion of the spinal cord, which relates to the C4 vertebra, contains nerves that run to the diaphragm, which helps us breathe by contracting and pulling air into the lungs. The C4 vertebra is located in the neck region of the spinal column, just above the thoracic vertebrae. It is located in close proximity to the thyroid cartilage.
C5 Spinal Vertebra Defined
The C5 spinal vertebra is the fifth vertebra from the top of the column. The C5 vertebra is significant for determining the severity of neck and spinal injury. If the injury is at or above the C5 vertebra, the person may be unable to breathe since the spinal cord nerves located between the third and fifth cervical vertebrae control respiration. Damage to the spinal cord at the C5 vertebra also affects the vocal cords, biceps, and deltoid muscles in the upper arms.
C3, C4, & C5 Vertebrae Anatomy
Cervical vertebrae from C3 through C6 are also known as typical vertebrae since they share similar anatomical characteristics to the other vertebrae further down the spinal column. Typical vertebrae share these features:
Vertebral Body
The thick boned vertebral body is cylindrical-shaped and located at the front of the vertebra. It carries most of the weight for a vertebra. Most vertebrae feature an intervertebral disc between 2 vertebral bodies for cushioning and shock absorption.
Vertebral Arch
The vertebral arch is a bony curve that wraps around the spinal cord toward the back of the spine and consists of 2 pedicles and 2 laminae.
Facet Joints
Each vertebra has a pair of facet joints, also known as zygapophysial joints. These joints, located between the pedicle and lamina on each side of the vertebral arch, are lined with smooth cartilage to enable limited movement between 2 vertebrae. Spinal degeneration or injury to the facet joints are among the most common causes of chronic neck pain.
Functions of C3, C4, & C5 Vertebrae
These vertebrae form the midsection of the cervical spine, near the base of the neck. They control function to the body from the shoulders down. All three vertebrae work together to support the neck and head.
Causes of Cervical Spinal Injuries
The most common causes of cervical vertebrae injury and spinal cord damage include a spinal fracture from diving accidents and sports, as well as medical complications. Other common causes include:
• Tumors
• Trauma
• Birth defects
• Motor vehicle accidents
• Infections or diseases
• Slip and fall incidents
C3, C4, and C5 Injury Symptoms
Symptoms of a C3 Level Spinal Cord Injury
Symptoms of a spinal cord injury corresponding to C3 vertebrae include:
• Limited range of motion
• Loss of diaphragm function
• Requirement of a ventilator for breathing
• Paralysis in arms, hands, torso, and legs
• Trouble controlling bladder and bowel function
Symptoms of a C4 Level Spinal Cord Injury
Patients with C4 spinal cord injuries typically need 24 hour-a-day support to breathe and maintain oxygen levels. Symptoms of a spinal cord injury corresponding to C4 vertebrae include:
• Loss of diaphragm function
• Potential requirement of a ventilator for breathing
• Limited range of motion
• Paralysis in arms, hands, torso, and legs
• Trouble controlling bladder and bowel function
Symptoms of a C5 Level Spinal Cord Injury
Damage to the spinal cord at the C5 vertebra affects the vocal cords, biceps, and deltoid muscles in the upper arms. Unlike some of the higher cervical injuries, a patient with a C5 spinal cord injury will likely be able to breathe and speak on their own. Symptoms of a spinal cord injury corresponding to C5 vertebrae include:
• Retaining the ability to speak and breathe without assistance, though respiration may be weak
• Paralysis in the torso, legs, wrists, and hands
• Paralysis may be experienced on one or both sides of the body
• Patients may be able to raise their arms and/or bend their elbows
• Patients will need assistance with daily living, but may have some independent function - Наука та технологія
Ive got C3 through two C7 spinal cord damage due to a car crash, had major surgery at Stanmore Orthopaedic Hospital,
Before the surgery I was told I’m going to be severely disabled for the rest of my life,
I have surprised all the surgeons at the hospital and almost made a full recovery,
I can do everything that I was doing before the accident just slightly weaker.
Don’t give up, motivation determination and hard work and you will see small improvements over a long time you can do it, 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Did you just have damage to the spinal cord at c3 or was it cut off?

Extensive spinal cord damage I have a open spine now from C3 to C7 the Japanese are well known for doing this type of surgery where they remove the back of the spine and fit metal rods either side, I get a lot of nerve pain which is horrendous, but i’ve made a very good recovery, I spent several months at Stanmore Orthopaedic Hospital and then one year at Bolsover Street, London for rehab treatment,
That's great news, this will give us more hope for my daughter who is 2 years old. She has C3-C5 spinal cord injury too. Anyway, may i Know about the operation? did Dr operate on your back neck? Thanks in advance for your answer!
thanks be to God

On my neck I have a large scar from the top of my head to the middle of my back,
Once having the surgery it’s a very slow recovery,
As a retired Medic I sympathise with anyone who has succumbed to a "C - Spine" injury as I myself have a C5/6 disc herniation making life pretty challenging and painful. My symptoms are less severe than many but I also have had multiple major surgeries on # (fracture) to L3/4/5 over the years resulting in continued pain, paralysis and complete lack of feeling in one leg, causing multiple falls. I use sticks, wheelchair, scooter to get about. I used to do loadsa sports but alas I only dream them now.
My cervical spine causes total lack of feeling in one arm resulting in many coffee cups and dinners covering both me, the floor/furniture!
For anyone out there whose pain is severe there's support somewhere. Analgesics (pain killers) are an option, but be careful if you choose the "Opioid" route, such as MST (morphine sulphate). Highly addictive and a list of side effects as long as ur arm. I went thru a mere 4 days of withdrawal to get off the damn stuff!
There's help out there with not only your family doctor but other well trained medical professionals.
In the end life can have a bright side. A laugh with friends helps a lot. As does putting the world to rights, over a cuppa of course. Remember, there's always someone worse off than you! Take care out there.
Thanks for the positive post, these are difficult injuries but in most instances someone else could be worse off.
72 years old. A former boxer and combat martial artist since the age of nine. So I knew that I would end up like Muhammad Ali and some point. Started about 55. Cervical myelopathy. Lumbar stenosis. Bertolloti syndrome which is an extra vertebrae between lumbar and sacral joint. I opted for the cervical fusion. Twice. Anterior and emergency posterior. What surgeon didn't tell me post op was that I would experience Adjacent Segment Dysfunction. And that my ligamentum flavum would hypertrophy and calcify. Now I have vertigo. Autoimmune dysfunction that I treat myself with antihistamines. Helps with nausea and flushing with excessive sweating. I'm losing my vision and hearing. My ability to swallow. To breath. Nonstop pain. All over. A lot of MS symptoms. I saw what opiods did to a lot of family members. But I tried drugs like heroin. Briefly. I saw what drugs did to my family members. But the pain was debilitating. I thought of suicide. But my warrior upbringing wouldn't allow that. I discovered that like most of us I was fighting the pain. And losing every time. So I decided to befriend the pain. To make it an ally. A vehicle of self discovery. So instead of fighting the pain. I will mentally hitch a ride with the pain. Which oddly. Ironically. Changed the pain to pleasure. Actually it reduces the severity of the pain. And it becomes manageable. Spiritually it's the sublimation of suffering. Hang in there.
@@calvinmurry1096 I'm sorry to learn this! I'm 61 with Dystonia hitting between C4 - C7. It's been 1.5yrs and nothings helping. The surgery they talk about makes me wonder if I'll go that far, esp w this condition they said the muscles could actually break & strip the hardware they'd use. IDK the answer but the paralysis in my arms shows up periodically & things aren't improving via meds so I may have to decide if that surgery is worth it.
Just sharing. Hope you are doing well.
You all don't lose hope may things be easy for u and may u miraculously recover
are you going to do the disc replacement surgery? I am scared I have a herniated cervical disc but I have intermittent pain in my hands and leg I thought it's more a problem to worry when it's accidents or rupture to the cord
The best channel I’ve ever seen on spines.
What a nice compliment, thank you!
Thankyou for your encouraging words.
Thank you for the information.
I had injured my cervical spine - specifically herniated discs, C3-5. I am so very thankful that the actual spinal cord wasn't damaged, and I had no loss of anatomical functions other than temporary numbness to both arms.
But man...... That was probably the second most painful injury I have sustained in my entire life. Every little movement, every little insignificant shifts in my body's center of gravity, and every forced breath felt like someone sledgehammering the back of my neck, head, back and my shoulders. It probably didn't help that this injury came paired with a delicious side dish of TBI.
Fortunately, I have made a very good recovery since then, and I can function almost at a complete normal level. I still occasionally experience "locked" neck and stiff pain, but considering all the other things that could have happened to me, I'm infinitely grateful. However, I later suffered a stress injury to L4-6 which did worsen my general spinal health. After 2 years of treatments, LOTS of physical therapy sessions, and a rehab center visit, I am able to function again. I now try to keep myself as healthy and fit as possible through proper diet and exercises, and I feel better than I have ever before, albeit a few things that I have to be cautious with in regards to reinjuring my spine.
The moral of the story? Take care of your body, folks. I don't wanna sound like that one old guy, but really, take care of your body even if you are young and fit. Whatever harms come to your body now will definitely show up not too far down the road.
Stay healthy and stay upright, everyone!
Any updates 🤔
Thank you so much very informative.!

Great info, but remember that c3-4 still have ability to talk and yes, our breathing may be weak but I have the ability to to talk just fine- not vent dependent. I have a few friends at c3 again who are similar, and when it comes to incomplete injuries, as you know, there are walking quads etc...
JahJJMac, that is a great point thanks for sharing. We have attempted to share some of the common challenges which can be related to each level. In future videos we may need to better explain how unique every injury is and that individuals such as you and your friends may not experience all of the symptoms. Yes I'd love to hear how and what level effects the autonomic system
As I have dysautonomia ever since my surgery (dr didn't do anything wrong it just happened )
He said it may go away or stay
So far it's stayed and getting worse
But pain and other symptoms like numbness and my terrible grip is all fixed
So why the autonomic dysfunction if it seems I'm 80% cured and free of most symptoms
I no you're not my doctor and can't diagnose me I'm very very curious
I mean I went from scalding pain not even able to pick up a piece of paper
To most my fuctions back and better than they have been in years and pain is moderate
Why the downward spiral of my autonomic system ?

I have a c5 neck injury pain most of the time 😮
Hi.. One of my relative met with accedent and his medical report says.."C5 compression flexion injury with C5 motor c7 sensory" .. Surgery done 3 day's back... Can you please let me know how long will it take to recover.. and how much percent patient body parts will recover..
Unfortunately every injury is a little bit different and we do not have a doctor on staff to review records and answer this specific question.
I have constant headaches coupled with nerve pains in back of head. My Xray showed Severe disc space narrowing C3-4, C5-6. Endplate osteophyte reformation (?) and to lesser extent C4-5. My doctor was vague on details and referred me to pain specialist. Any input on relations to pain and xray findings. Doctor said MRI wasn't necessary.. I disagree...
I had a concussion and nerve pains in the back of my head- at least the pain specialist can do injections that will take the pain away in 30 minutes. Please write to me.. Cheryl Barrett Graham
I would say u need an MRI to make sure things. You're symptoms almost same like mine. But i only diagnose with c3 fractured through X ray. Waiting for MRI now.
Is it possible for the C3-4 cord injury to only injur the lack of range of motion like no range of motion looking up?
Every injury is different so it's possible, but there are often other symptoms. You should consult a physician if you are having issues.
I have c1 to c4 prblm....what can do...plz help me
Something like 10 years ago I had an accident and my head went through some really hard drywall. Like I cannot bust it in anyway with my hand or foot. I've tried with the edges of the hole and.. I can't believe it even happened. Went almost perfectly straight line top of my head first. Knocked me out good and I was so messed up for months and months, I could barely breathe, swallow, or sleep because it hurt so bad. For many years after it was incredibly hard to turn my head, but always hurt to some degree no matter what. I had bouts of numbing on outer part of my hand last couple few fingers palm and all.. The last couple years it comes and goes, but when it flares up it becomes intense if I don't just stay straight and use my arms very little. I wonder if I've lost the muscle needed.. I guess I could kind of tell it seemed like it was more like toward that ball on your neck kind of like the base idk.. I mean it was everywhere it felt like my skull was separating from itself, and from my neck, but ended up seeming like was stemming from the area down further. For different reasons I never sought help I was also a little concerned about finding the right person to not do any manipulating you know without scans.. I just never spent money on myself either and bla bla bla but I wonder if it's been too long or could it be worth looking at. Idk where to start.. and if I made it this long is it needed or do I just toughen up?

I had an autograft stem cell transplant with my own stem cells with an ACDF surgery from C3-C5 and it has been amazing turn around
(Felt like was run over by a bus but It was and is still a million times better pain and other symptom wise than before the surgery )

and I'm so happy I never have to worry about a fake disc wearing out on me I'm fixed for life
So luckily he did it correctly otherwise Id be screwed for life no way to correct
People under 70-80 really shouldn't be getting these crappy fake discs unless 100% necessary

Hlo sir I am from india my problem is cervicle spine curve and c5c6 osteophytes my body in very weakness and everyday chronic pain
I'm also from India but live in Germany and got treatment for the same. Best treatment is the exercise, especially the shoulder one because the shoulder muscles support spinal cords, one they are weak they don't support the cords well and we get all short of problems. Of course, eating well is also important to get enough calcium and correct posture for sitting is also important. Use good chair, adjustable table if you use computer to have screen at same level as your eyes, orthopedic pillows etc also help. I repeat, most important is regular exercise.

Degrees of completeness are on the ASIA scale:
A, B, C, D and E
A is complete
B is complete
C is incomplete with strength lower than a muscle grade of 2 (meaning the person can’t move limbs against gravity or struggles to do so without support, or there is minimal movement or none)
D means it’s incomplete but they have more strength (grade 3 or higher) in the muscles
E is no spinal cord injury/ normal

What is this? The worse case scenario??
Geese, a herniated disc is all I have not this scary shit.. My god, now Im affraid to go to sleep
I currently have a herniated C3/C4 disc I too was thinking the absolute worst but I was reassured that I am not in danger whatsoever, I had 2 MRIs last year and there was no compression on my spinal cord. I get a second cortisone shot into my cervical spine
I believe this video is talking about serious injuries resulting from falls and crashes, nothing I heard in this video seemed to be related to a herniated disc
same I am so afraid to sleep I have a herniation around C5 C6 and I am also so afraid of being in cars now this have me ptsd
I have problems with c4 c5c6 c7 so much pain
I'm same along with other conditions
It is very painful

Great statement
@Ellie Henderson don’t worry stay with god and you will dance of joy in heaven. Watch church services and read the Bible. Nothing is impossible with the help of God. No matter how much faith you lose God will never change and will keep helping you God bless
Tell that to the countless people who are suffering in immense pain begging and pleading for your God to take it away from them only to be still be in pain…people like you are a joke don’t you ever try to diminish unimaginable pain/suffering you POS
Amen 🙏🏼
