I had never read this ERB story before - thanks for posting. Very good job by the narrator. The story is classic Burroughs - adventure, battles, escapes, danger and - of course - a beautiful woman to rescue. While the African and Asian characters may seem retrograde today they struck me as fairly progressive for 1916. But the Abyssinian emperor being protected by only a single guard makes me wonder how he acquired an empire in the first place. It was interesting to see the global politics of 1916 extrapolated into the 22nd century. ERB wasn’t a subtle writer but he could spin a yarn. Thanks again.
Imagine the creativity of the author for this story would have been if they knew what the 2000's technology would be compared to 1916. Not that they weren't creative for the time.
@@davidh7177 The novels are the way to go. Audiobooks are fine for a re-read (re-listen?), but nothing beats the written word on the page for the first time! ; )
I always laugh when a new character pops up and gets the inevitable phrenology breakdown, like you can always tell it's going to be a positive interaction if she has a high forehead, lol. Also lions got nerfed hard a dozen pages from the first encounter.
I like how this story was covering the southseas beyond the arctic that to this day remain undiscovered aswell anything land wise within that region. But oddly..in iur society noone and i mean noone mentions this
Of course the Savage girls the most beautiful woman has ever seen. The smell must been nonexistent with her Luxurious Looks compared to the beastly men around her
Lol the racial undertones in old sci-fi like this is just hilarious. Spoilers past this point... Savage whites and civilized blacks 😂 holy hell that made me laugh mostly because the of era the story comes from.

True, the depictions of the Africans wasn't politically correct for today. And it's not a wave off to say it's a product of its time. This was a very very particular period in time. This was written: in 1915 When most people were born and died in one town A year into "the war to end all wars" In the dead center of the segregation era USA During a full blown pandemic with death counts so high a gag order was placed on the news outlets At the height of religious, patriotic American. 10 years after the return of the black plague in China Town San Francisco. (Which was soundly destroyed with one part interpreters explaining how to get rid of it and one part brave Chinese youth banding together to hunt down and kill every rat in China Town) This book is a fun house mirror of what was going on at the time: Travel was for the first time widely possible; both appealing and record breakingly deadly to the youth. Travellers (soldiers) would find that either that odd-looking, strange-speaking fellow was a life saver, a coward, or a monster with very little in between and it was near impossible to know which at a glance. Edgar here posed the question: What if only the best and the worst survived the great war, and everything that Europe and the USA did to Africa was reversed on to them? He concluded: The two super powers would thrive. The most disciplined and religious would take over the heathens in the war torn lands. Africa (thanks to Christianity) and numbers would invade barbaric Europe. Not all slavery is bad slavery in the right hands... But it sure doesn't feel right when they do it to us... Legend!
This story definitely doesn't have strong comedic undertones but the flow and choice of words remind me so much of Douglas Adams

This seems like it’s going to be a good story. Hoping half as good as comments say it is.
The Narrator sounds like the voice actor who performed the Eisenhorn audiobooks. ; )
Jonathan Keeble?
@@davidh7177 No, Jonathan Keeble narrates much of GW's audiobooks, but Toby Longworth narrated the Eisenhorn trilogy.
