- Hatfield & McCoy feud-
Asa Harmon McCoy, Randall McCoy's youngest brother and a Union soldier, was shot in 1865 by the Logan Wildcats. The Wildcats were led by Confederate "Devil Anse" Hatfield. Jim Vance (Devils uncle) was the suspected leader in the murder, although there was never a conviction.
We visit the historic marker where he was murdered and go on a search in the rain for his and his wife Martha's.. long lost graves.
My 5th great grandfather Peter Cline, who was born in Reading, PA in 1756, great grandmother, & great uncle Jacob (Rich Jake) Cline are buried there. Peter served in the PA Berks County Militia and 12th PA Regiment during the American Revolutionary War. He fought in the battles of Long Island, White Plains, Trenton, Princeton, Brandywine Creek, and Germantown. Considering his military service, it is troubling that he lies there in an unmarked, forgotten grave. If his remains could be identified, I would attempt to have them exhumed and reintured in a National Cemetery. Thank you for posting this video. Bobby J. Cline, Major USMC.
Thank you for your service.
I’ve seen some disrespectful stuff but for a community to let a cemetery go like that is something out of a third world country. The state should step in and hold the county accountable. Especially with military buried in there. It’s not going to break a towns budget to mow the grass every two weeks .. smh
May be private land.
Somebody should ask the town assessors office find out who owns the land and either make them maintain it or allow volunteers to do it.
Asa was my G. G. grandfather and if was in KY I'd do it myself.
Why should a city or town have say so over private property ? The family members of the departed should respect their loved ones and get off their lazy azz and cut the weeds. Then you have nice people that let other people be buried on their property with the intent of the persons family to maintain the upkeep and after decades the family just doesn't care.
@@truthryder8947 most cities and towns do have ordinances regarding property maintenance, they are "public nuisance laws", when property is let grow out of control the city can step in and send a landscaper to clean and cut then send to owner the bill along with a summons to appear in court to answer public nuisance charges.
Some counties in KY allow jail inmates to clean abandoned graveyards...the inmates get " jail credit" for working
Asa Harmon McCoy is my fourth great grandfather. Thank you, doing this and creating this video ❤️ it’s a shame the cemetery is in this condition.
This gentleman has the most pleasant voice and manner of speaking. I almost expect to hear something about "happy little trees" at any moment
Haha he is a happy soul
Thank you all so much for all you do! You truly care about history and sacrifice so much. It is truly appreciated. Unfortunately, Many Graves will be lost forever because they were not marked or barely marked due to financial reasons.
This is true. We enjoy the journey trying to find them though. You learn a lot. Thanks for watching 😊 and supporting us
@@thehillbillyfiles This is a Hatfield who has a museum in Cave City, Kentucky. If you watch the video starting at the 15:55 mark, He talks about ASA being buried on Hatfield Property and some details about the cave he was hiding at. I found it interesting and thought maybe it might help the search. ua-cam.com/video/uwZEKhyg-0k/v-deo.html
Amen
Very cool to know that descendants of the McCoys are helping preserve the history of events. My husband, his father, grandfather,g grandfather, gg grandfather are all direct descendants of ANCE Hatfield and even were born and grew up with all of them in Mingo West Virginia. I always wondered why my kids are so mean😂. Wishing the McCoy side a happy and blessed Christmas from the Hatfield side of history. 💕
🤣Thanks so much! and thanks for the superchat, so nice! Merry Christmas, we are going back soon to fix Asas cemetery

@@kimmy3469 I have myheritage and ancestry the video is based on this. The family story is that Asa Harmon McCoy's wife, Martha Cline, buried her husband in the Cline Cemetery, where her father, mother and grandparents were buried. Martha's parents were, Jacob "Rich Jake" Cline & Nancy Fuller. Martha's brother was Perry Anderson Cline. Martha's grandparents were Peter Cline & Elizabeth Lizzy Riffe.
The Old Cline Family graves were moved when the railroad came through Delorme in the late 1800's. The graves were relocated in the present day Delorme Cemetery near the church and railroad crossing.
I also descend from this family ! Descended from Martha - Anse’s elder sister …
Community leaders need to do something about this grave yard. So much history is being lost
I agree 💯
Please clean it up! Just a lil elbow grease, weed whacker and Tada lookin good!
Thank you for all you do. It's really sad that no one takes care of the cemetery.
Thank you for the support!
@@thehillbillyfiles yall do amazing work! Thank you!
@@thehillbillyfiles hey why don't you all but a electronic weedeater or small electronic mower and help clean places like this up just an idea and would be more than happy to help it get done
It is so great that you are working on your family's history and sharing it with us. I have enjoyed all of your videos that I have viewed. Very historic. There are two graves with only rock supports in my family's cemetery. Have no clue who is buried in the graves.
Thank you so much!
You two make a great team! I appreciate all your effort on these video’s!
Thank you two for the very good videos... I love it..
Thank you for your work! I love history like this. My prayers are to all that rest in this place.
Much appreciated
Got this notification rather quickly. Great video. Even with ground penetrating radar and locating every grave, without a marker, you would never know who's buried where. Unless someone local knows for sure.
Thank you Terry!
I agree that the condition of this historic cemetery is poor. Very sad...
What a 😔 sad looking
Cemetery...my last name for 61 yrs has been McCoy. My Father was from Tenn. Jr
MCcoy.
I love your videos!! I visited the Kentucky and West Virginia area last month and can’t wait to go back. Beautiful area and so much history. Thank you so much for these videos. Keep up the good work
Man you both have really good content. I’ve followed other channels and I just gotta say thank you. I’ve always been interested in Appalachia especially Kentucky.
Thank you. We enjoy doing it.
Asa Harmon McCoy is my 1st. Cousin 5 times removed. Thanks for the video and I wish a family member in the area would take care of these burial areas.
Well then you and Leo are related! We plan to get permission to clean the cemetery this winter
@@thehillbillyfiles It would seem so! Glad to hear you're looking to clean it up. Thanks very much! Update video on the clean up would be interesting as well.
@@b.louise9091 we sure will 😊
It really bothers me that cemeteries are disturbed for any reason but to move them just to put in a railway or highway is absurd and disrespectful. Also bad juju. For Pete’s sake let the dead rest in peace and go around!
I have always said that cemeteries are full of history, but I find the condition of this cemetery a disaster and I do agree that the county and state need to do something about it or it will be lost forever!!
We are planning to try and get something done to it
Just came across your videos, so interesting that I subscribed. Thank you
Thank you so much!
Could listen to ya'll talk history all day good show
Thank you so much!!
It is sad to see this overgrowth, thanks for the videos though, i enjoy the history of all of this
Thank you, enjoyed it. Hope you r able to find it some day.
we plan to go back this winter and clean it, thank you!
Great historical video on the H & M's, ya got my sub......😎✌️
Thank you!
Great channel , I had a (brother) friend whose family was from around Logan in particular his father. He was a Vance & he claimed to be a descendent of Uncle Jim Vance. He also said his mother was from the Hatfields or that she was a Hatfield. His dads name was Randolph Vance. WW2 vet who was at Normandy. I saw his medals he had a Purple Heart I believe. Anyway I knew his great big family , like 10 kids. Have you ever met anyone from Vance’s family? Thanks
There is descendants of Jim around we do meet them. His video is coming soon
Thank you again for all your hard work. And I worry about you guys when you reach down in those weeds
Your very sweet, thanks
Same, I thought it was alive with snakes "down* there. We don't have them in Alaska.
The civil war Back Then can you imagine how scary it would be if we had one today
Hi Everyone...My Grandma is Lewis Jefferson and Sarah m. Wolford McCoys. Daughter
You do great work and are very humane. Tge people killed on both sides were actual.human beings not faceless numbers on a casualty list. Superb stuff😢😢😢😢😢
Thanks for all you do, but its a sad testimony to the community not keeping up a cemetery. That's years of neglect.
They have fixed it now
On the sign at the end it talks about where the clubs cabin Devil Anse moved into was located would be nice to see that area
Thanks!
What a disgrace not keeping up a cemetery. Across from the church.
Shame graveyard was moved and no one taking care of this cemetery
Do you ever cover any Civil War battle fields my great great grandfather James Keeling fought in Strawberry Plains TN in the battle called The Defender of The Bridge he is buried in Bristol Virginia in East Side Cemetery
It’s funny how some of those headstones are roughly the same age and some have some that’s somewhat readable and others aren’t
Sad,sad, sad property. Someone should be held accountable for its upkeep!☹️
Just a tip when going up or down a steep hill walk at a angle not straight up and down it makes it easier. Love your videos from first one I've seen
Thanks Tracey
So many forgotten graves, makes me sad. 😢
One of my greatest grandpas. I’m from Harvey McCoy.
Very interesting!

Most welcome
I’m also a family member of ASA Harmon MCcoy from my grandma Harris her maiden name was Myrtle MCcoy Harris Jake MCcoy was his name Larkin MCcoy was his father and Asa was his father

If you have a good flashlight and shine from one side to the other you can see it better.
Thank you, for another interesting video, I subscribed. I hope you find
Asia's and Martha's graves one day.
You may have walked by them without knowing it. I would think,
that the country has enough money
to have a crew come in two, maybe
three times a year, with weed trimmers, and keep those weeds down. I do not suppose that your family remembers what type of grave markers Asa and Martha had?
Do you know what year the cemetery was moved, because of the railroad?
One last thing, before I would clean
a headstone, I would watch a video
about the right way to do it on UA-cam. I have watched a few of them, there is a bit of a process involved. Also, I think permission needs to be obtained from the family, if any are still living, or the
cemetery management, if the cemetery has any local management, or the country.
Thank you very much again, take care.
We have looked into how to wash stones and got the suggested things. We wouldnt do just anybody's, we plan to start with our own family graves in Phelps ky. Im not sure on year the cemetery was moved off hand. Thank you for the message =)
@@thehillbillyfiles You are more than welcome. Thank you very much for getting back to me. I wish you well again with
finding Asia's and Martha's graves, I really do. The only reason I brought up the subject, is something that I watched on another UA-cam channel, Serenity Sue, have you
heard of her? She tours cemeteries and graveyards in Ireland and the U.K. Many of the cemeteries she visits have headstones that are
leaning over, bad. I asked her one day, if someone will fix them one day. She told me that to fix a headstone, one would need the
family's permission, or be able
to prove that there are no longer any living family members. I realize that the legalities over here may be a little different. I just subscribed to your channel, I enjoy watching your
videos when I can, I believe in what
you are doing. I would just hate to see someone get into trouble inadvertently, so I hope I did not offend anyone. I am now more
careful about what I do around headstones myself. Have a great day, and happy Halloween!
It's sad to see a graveyard neglected like this. In Illinois, this is illegal for the most part. Unfortunately, we didn't start regulating cemeteries (through the office of the Comptroller) until 1970. These old gravesites are still found, and many Illinoisans have taken it upon themselves to care for the many abandoned sites, but the thought that nobody cares enough to properly maintain these sites is heartbreaking.
Wish Pennsylvania had that law. My Grandparents cemetery was sold to a man that didn't know it was a cemetery. The weed and fallen trees made it not safe to even get into the cemetery. Finally got the city county historian group to help clean it up. Now they do a once a year clean up. Which helps, but our family still cleans our family area.
@@SandyD2022 Try working with your State Rep and Senator. Explain to them that the laws governing cemeteries in Illinois are administered by the State Comptroller's office. The regulations have teeth, but because the law was not passed until1970, many cemeteries in Illinois still suffer. It's worth a try. Suggest they model the regulations after what Illinois has. The regulations work.
@@ira1ish As a family we contacted, city, and county. I contacted the Senator, state rep, and Governor. My cousin contacted the Newspaper, and local news station. They put it on the news, and a young couple seen it, and with very little help started working on it. They spent there own money and replaced fencing, trees, cleaned and even had the guy that owned the property steal the equipment that they locked up in a shed that was on the grounds. My family replaced it all and it was then visiting to do a family get together that we went to the historical society because I do genealogy. That my sister was telling about it, and they have added to there list of cemetery that they take care of. This has been a 3 year work in progress. I'm still shaking my head that anyone can buy a cemetery. Guy thought he was going to build on it. But we got taken care of, he would have to move all bodies. He bought it for 1500.00 and wanted to sell it to us for 20.000.00 Sorry still angry about this, my cousin is a KIA from Vietnam, and there are many Civil war veteran, and they are being dishonored.
@@SandyD2022 Yours is a very unhappy story. It shouldn't be this way. We have wealthy people who pay lawyers to get social laws that they want, but nobody is looking out for the little guy. I know how important this is to you. I hope you can preserve this cemetery.
@@ira1ish Your right, and thank you for your kind words.
If this cemetery was moved after 1900, there should be records of the removel and location of each grave site in the new Cemetery. I would check with the court house. I would also check to see if the cemetery before its relocation was associated with a church. The church might even have records.
🙌🙌🙌 watching from Ohio Smitty out 👋👋👋
Sometimes you can lay a blank piece of paper over the letters and headstone and etch across the paper with a graphite pencil
This will be all of us sooner or later
Is there a registry somewhere for who is buried there? Seems like there would be a plot map. Were these the people moved or not moved for the railroad?
It's sad no one takes care of that cemetery
Maybe you should document some of the names if readable to Find A Grave. People doing family research rely on grave hunters like us. There are only 36 names documented in this cemetery. The newest one was 2013. The grave that was unreadable is posted on Find a Grave, his name is George Parks Co.D 2nd Regiment Va. Infantry, he also was a coal miner. Thank you for the grave hunting adventure.
We do document some, but when we go back to clean it soon, we will do more thank you 🙏
@@thehillbillyfiles you guys are awesome I really enjoy your true stories.
My grandfather was John Franklin Phillips from W. Virginia, his uncle was Bad Frank Phillips . I have found very little information on my great grandfather John Phillips, Bad Frank s half brother. If anyone has any information or source, much appreciated!
Sad that no one keeps that Cemetery up. By the way when you see just a stone that is most likely a field stone marking a very early grave.
right
Use water in a sprat bottle and soft brush to help read the writing, never do rubbing as it damages the grave,
The Shields on the tombstones are the Grand army of the Republic, something similar to the VFW that we have today.
The roster for the 34th doesn't show any Hatfields and only one Mcoy. I had relatives in the 34th from Bedford VA.
I will correct that, it was the 36th, thank you for catching that!
One side of my grandparents was from Southern West Virginia ,I was given Harmon as first name ,wonder if that's where they got it from
Just a tip, if you use a flashlight close from the side, it can make it easier to read.
you can often retrieve the text from old tombstones by placing damp paper over the text and then rubbing it with a brush
I don't no why some one can't build a group of people that willing to travel around the country mowing and taking care of all these grave yards for free ,it would bring people together ,but it seems people are forgotten about once they die, mowing the grave yard and showing the world just how much a person can care for the forgotten people of the past.its a shame to see these burial sites like this ,
When we go to the old cemetery looking for civil wars head stones.. we pour just a little water on the head stone and it will bring out the writing sometimes..
I have always been intrigued by the hatfilds and Mc coy factions it was do horrible but this cimatery is so wrong that it wasn't taken care of y the church it is so discraful to not keep up
Terrible that town doesn't care about the history 😥😥☹️
Why can't the McCoy clan organize a fundraiser or Go Fund Me, and get a strategy together to clean up the graveyard and identify and replace headstones with polished granite.
I don't know. Most people don't even know asa is supposed to be buried there. It's in a remote place in wv. They focus on the bigger cemeteries
Have you gone to the Hatfield mcCoy museum in Matewan?
theres a mine wars museum in matewan and a Hatfield McCoy museum home place in sarah ann WV, above matewan, Ive been to both yes
Asa should have military headstone
My great great grandpa is constable Floyd Hatfield Devil anses cousin he is buried in the cemetery in the background
When I was younger we used to go from McDowell county WV to blackberry Kentucky to the chicken fights
My great great grandpa constable Floyd Hatfield is in that cemetery above the school
Where did the Harmon come from in Asa Harmon McCoy? Any idea was it a family Name?
Asa harmon would be my grandma's grandpa
very neat!
Where is the cemetery of the three boys that were shot and a papa trees?
It's at the forbidden cemetery in hardy KY. You can only visit if a McCoy and on certain dates , it's across from the McCoy well site, which you can visit
It certainly doesn’t help that the graves aren’t laid out in any sort of order. I’ve noticed at the Hatfield cemetery and other family cemeteries that I’ve visited there that the graves are where folks found the digging the easiest, I guess.
My remains will not be in a graveyard. My ashes will be sprinkled on my property
My maiden name is Klein but pretty sure we are not related because my family came thru from Germany and Ireland to Ellis Island to the upper states like Michigan and Maryland etc
You need to document all Graves so somebody has pictures of them. Clean with wire brush does anybody know name of the cemetery
Is perry cline there also ?
No he's in Pikeville, we did a separate video on him which you can find
I’m a direct descendant of Selkirk McCoy he is my 5x grandfather and his son Lorenzo McCoy is my 4x grandfather
So do you Hatfield and McCoy's still feud with each other
There's a tension still in some situations. But it's still there yes.
The unit for the Logan Wildcats was the 45th Virginia not the 34th as she has stated…

They may rest in unmarked graves 1865 the south had very little money & she a widow with children. It could be very possible he is in an unmarked graves. Depending on when she died his wife may also have an unmarked grave
Who can afford a tombstone today? I hear they are very expensive
I was married to a descendent of Devil Anse. My husband's name was Ronnie Dean Hatfield. He took me to meat some of his family.
Very neat!
How many of them did you meat...uhh,I mean meet?

If you take a little container of lime with you and lightly rub on it you will be able to read it all. No harm at all
The lime disapates in a short time lime and the limestone monuments are basically the same material.
Thanks for the tip! Much appreciated
Its ashamed to see cemetaries such as this are over grown
My grandpa always said asa was killed on the mountain up blue springs hollor
Can you talk to a local church and see if they can help clean the graveyard
Great idea!
If you google find a grave asa McCoy up comes a stone about him and his murder but it does not say where this stone marker is maybe under all that grass, put on find a grave by a Coleman who has since passed
Thanks
My family lives up blue springs they are the Hatfield's
Sad that nobody has tried to weed eat or keep it up in respect to whom is buried there
By the way, I am glad it is fall and not summer due to snakes.
