Thank you for this absolutely wonderful interview. There are alot of unexplained happenings even in modern times. Many years ago I was planting flowers for my Mother. Mom had went to the store. I was there alone. I started to go inside the house and when I pulled the storm door open, in the glass was my Father walking behind me in the reflection. I turned around to see Dad but he wasn't there. I pulled the glass door open several times to try an see Dad again, I called to him again and again, but nothing. When Mom came back I told her what I had seen. I figured she wouldn't believe me, but she said she did. Dad had been dead for several years. I never seen anything like this again and I am 76 years old. Some things can't be explained, Donnie. God Bless You.

I remember when I was little, visiting my grandparents in Charleston, WV. My grandfather told me before I went to sleep to be aware of bobcats or mountain lions or what not. He told me they could start hollering and it might sound just like a woman screaming or a little baby crying. I never will forget that.

I remember my dad telling me that too. My dad's paternal ancestors had been living in the part of Virginia that later became WV since the 1600s, the family kept growing and growing spreading out to Eastern KY, Eastern TN, and about in the middle 1800s my line jumped the Ohio River and lived in south eastern Ohio in the hills there along the river.
I am the 1st generation to not be born and raised down in the hills/mountains, but every summer, we went down there to visit family and friends.
In the early 1950s my grandparents, my dad and his 2 siblings (all 3 were adults) moved up to northern Indiana for better jobs which they found, but my grandpa couldn't handle the flat land and city living so he went back down to the hills since him and my grandma had divorced.
The hills & mountains had a grip on Grandpa and called him back. I also feel the calling to go back down there and so did my dad and his 2 siblings. Whenever we went down to the hills my dad and his 2 siblings opened up and felt at home, at ease and would loosen up and laugh, tell stories, and felt peace being back home again. I miss it.
Black bears, mountain lions and copperheads is what I was told to beware of most especially the copperheads that could be found in the outhouses sometimes.

I have been a logger for 30 years, and I have always been in the woods, and I have near 100 acres that joins Rendezvous Mountains State Park in NW North Carolina that I live on. I have seen 3 panthers in my life, and 2 were black. One tried to get in our hog pen when I was a small kid, but I didn't see it, that would have been 4. I saw a black one standing on the white line one night on a local road, and a girl I was seeing at the time was with me, and she saw it too. I had one in my hayfield in front of my house one morning about 20 years ago, just as daylight was breaking, it was black. One day at work logging in Blowing Rock, near Boone, the guys that work for us, and my dad and I were eating a bite of dinner. The truck drivers were gone hauling loads, but there were still 4 of us there. We looked up the truck road through the woods, and standing in the middle of the road was a brown panther, and we all saw it. My friend about half mile from my house got a good trail cam picture of a brown one, and some people over in the west of the county have video of a brown one on their porch looking in their glass door. They are around for sure.

I've heard that scream myself along with several friends camping close to slick rock trailhead. That scream went on for over an hour. Scared us all pretty good. It was dark so we never got a look at it but I know it wasn't a bobcat. That happened in the mid to late 70s. I've been all over those mountains since then and have never heard it again. My mom said she grew up hearing the stories about painters and so one night when she was walking home in the dark from a friend's house out in the country, she heard something. She thought something was chasing her, so she'd walk faster, and it would walk faster. When she got home, she remembered she had on a new pair of corduroy pants, and it was the pants rubbing together making the sound and her imagination. I always got a kick out of her telling that story. But my great aunt said there were panthers up there in the hills.

Thank you so much Mister Donnie for having your friends pass on the deep lore of the mountains. We got panthers and swamp monkeys down here in the river bottoms of the Canebreak. My grandpa used to warn us to always keep our eyes peeled on the tree limbs above us when we were hunting down there. He said catamounts will lay up on them waiting for deer or other prey to walk beneath them unawares to pounce. As to the swamp monkeys, my great grandmother and great uncle had a clan of them that lived on their land. Me and my cousin saw one pass through a cut line when we were about 12 years old.

I could listen to him all day. I loved listening to my grandparents and my dad. I was born and raised here, and back before the area became so populated, when I was small enough that I barely remember it, there was some kind of big cat would come up behind our house and scream. It would pass through a certain time of year and we would hear it. I used to ride horses everywhere, and I saw a big dark brown cat from a distance that was bigger than a hay bale. My horse freaked out and we went home!! I live right off of I-40 close to Seveirville. My dad was born in 1938 and his family lived in the mountains till he was a young boy. The tales he had, makes me feel like I'm sitting at his feet again listening to your videos.

This takes me back to listening to folks. I'm looking forward to hearing more. I was lucky enough to have an uncle who gave me a tour of places where things had happened--like a murder, like a ghost,; makes me think people paid a lot more attention to what was around them, they didn't have cameras and a lot of time they were just on their own, nobody with them. Thank you so much for these memories! John is a wonderful story teller!

I married a girl from Pigeon Forge and her Daddy is buried in the Park. I am a woodsman and Hunter from Florida. After we were married and had two sons, we took a trip up to visit her family. My wife took me and the boys to Cades Cove. They must have been about five or six. We were hiking a trail that lead into a V-shaped holler dead-end with a big flat rock ahead of us. I was looking at the kids playing ahead of us so we could watch them. As I glanced ahead looking a the kids, a panther jumped down the trail ahead of us running left to right, just as clear as could be. I still think to this day he was casing out the kids cause they were just ahead of us. 25:12

My own dear daddy has been back twice since he passed over in 1979. I didn't see him either time, but I felt like I could have reached out and touched him. It was a mighty good experience, and I truly believe that the L-rd will send him for me when my own time comes. Man this is really Awesome Donnie!! Thanks so much for sharing this. I’ve seen 2 panthers first hand in my life. First one was just deer hunting at home in Rutherford county NC the other was in Cashiers NC (mountain town) had one staring at a buddy and me cutting fairways on a golf course I worked at up there. It was scary watching him stare from above me on a “mountain “ or more like a steep hill really.

Thanks Donnie, blessings from Georgia 🪶✨
I once lived in Panther Creek, (Painter Creek as the locals called it) in Haywood County NC. It was a beautiful area there.
I now live in my home county of Marion County GA, years ago while riding the firebreaks in the Oakland Community area with a couple of uncles of mine, we saw a large Black Panther as we were coming out of the woods onto the main highway, highway 41. I've heard them many times over the years deep in the woods.
They're there! Where I'm currently living I've seen tracks of a very large cat.
Love the Mockingbird and wind chimes 😅
I've got a mockingbird that stays around the property here every day.
Thanks to Mr John for sharing his stories. I really enjoyed them all.
