A lot of shavings equals a lot of time and progress. Good show!
Thanks buddy, a lot of time but I really enjoy this bit of the build process.
Amazing to see the neck take shape. A great skills to have. With my woodworking skills....well lets just say it would more of a comedy video!
I'm sure you'd be just fine, just need a bit of practice :)
@@Adventuresfromtheshedofdreams Very kind, but you haven't seen the "representation of a fork" I carved in woodwork at school when I was about 12!
Legs eleven! 😂 looking good Pat. Favourite part of the build. You make it look easy. Nice one!
Lol, I thought I'd give you all a bit of a treat :)
All that without scratching this beautiful finished fretboard, too much for me 😂
Haha, I was very, very careful :)
Before I attempted a build, I remember seeing builders everywhere saying how much they love carving the neck and I thought really? But man, it’s SO satisfying. This has left me itching to get the one I’m working on now carved. Roll on E11!
I think for me carving the neck was the scariest bit when I was thinking about my first build, having got over that probably makes me enjoy it more :)
@@Adventuresfromtheshedofdreams ditto, once I got stuck in - and didn’t hit the truss rod - i found it quite zen. I also really get a kick out of the fact I can make it how I want it.
I'm so pleased to see you using a spokeshave. I hate seeing guys hack away at a neck with rasps even Shintos cos you are only ever cutting at a small surface. With a spokeshave you can go the full length of the neck with every shaving and the neck stays constant from end to end so you dont have to keep checking for straightness. I always start by creating the profile with a rasp at the heel and just before the volute and then just join the two profiles with a spokeshave from end to end - It's so easy and fast. You do need a really sharp spokeshave but the rest is easy and the plus is a superb finish which needs very little sanding cos the surface is a hundred times better than from a Shinto. Great video again looking forward to the next one.
I am really enjoying usinga spokeshave for this aspect these days, much nicer than scratching away with a rasp. Having said that I still rate the Shinto :)
Starting to look like a guitar mate 👍
It's getting there buddy, soon be putting some finish on :)
I'm almost at this stage with my current build so this is going to be very helpful. Brilliantly demonstrated as usual Patrick. I honestly don't know how I'd manage without your channel!
Cheers, glad you are finding it useful.
The neck carve looks to be a rewarding aspect of the build to me . Nice work
Cheers, it is my all time favourite part of any build, I really enjoy it.
Nice work, and definitely cements my desire to find a good spokeshave for it. Looks like you're at the point where the process is basically "cut away all the wood that isn't a guitar neck", and that's a good place to be!
That is my favourite description of how to make a guitar :) I got that spokeshave and a little stanley 101 for £5 at a car boot sale. They just needed a clean and sharpen and they were as good as new. That particular spokeshave is a very nice tool.
neck carve day.. I have to say that spoke shave does a fine job as long as the grain is working with you.. and is the Shinto designed to cut in just about any direction? was surprised to see you going at it from different angles.. always nice to see the neck come together and hopefully with the "Conner Volute"
The spokeshave is a great tool, you do need to watch the grain but when properly set up they do a great job. The Shinto will cut in any direction without any issue the iwasaki carving files I will use later to clean up work better with the grain however. It will have that volute :)
Hello again Pat,
I’m pretty sure you mentioned you were using Sapele on this build ( correct me if I’m wrong please 😊 ). It looks so much like mahogany I’m wondering how many places are actually using this and mislabeling the product ahah! I own a few Gibsons here and two are actually Specials as well, an SG and also a Les Paul ( The neck profiles are vastly different too, with the LP neck being far more chunky ).
I do love the Specials with the P90’s, mine both have two pickups as well however I know they’ve made ones with single pups @ the bridge as well and some or most were called Juniors, so many different models over the years it’s hard to keep up too.
Anyhows, just like all your builds this is certainly going to be another ‘Beaut’ I’m sure. That nice dark piece of Ebony is really going to look fantastic over the TV Yellow too with nice contrast 🤙
It is Sapele, I find it very similar to mahogany apart from the figure. I have seen a few guitars being sold as Mahogany that looked very much like Sapele. I love the P90 equiped junior/specials, I very nearly bought a TV yellow special a few years ago and really wish I had ever since.
@@Adventuresfromtheshedofdreams They are real nice, I picked one up off my friend that bought a new one and he didnt care for it ( He prefers his PRS w/ 90's) mine has the cherry finish although I'd much rather the TV Yellow as well, such a cool color with the grain showing through it. Regardless, yours will be fantastic Pat :)
So I’ve been thinking about the whole “mask off the truss-rod channel” question, and for myself…I’ve stopped. I work to be sane with the amount of glue, but even if I over-do it, I fit the truss-rod channel quite tight, and the truss-rods that I use are all wrapped in plastic…so I legitimately don’t see how glue could end up being a problem.
Yep, I sometimes wonder if it is needed but old habits and all that :)
Спасибо за видео. А если использовать фрезу 45 градусов, это должно ускорить процесс?
It was only when you pointed out that you couldn’t use cocktail sticks to locate the fretboard that it dawned on me that you have approached this build differently to most of your others. Was there a particular reason for this?
Not really, I think I might have been in a hurry to try out my fret press!
Hi Pat, please can you tell me what dust extractor you use? Many thanks
I use a record DX1000 extractor but also use my shop vac on some of the tools. I am in the process of installing a fixed extraction setup but it is taking a little while!
@@Adventuresfromtheshedofdreams Brilliant, thanks!
Scuze me, but where is episode one???
It's called new build day
