  • On September 12, 1962, John F. Kennedy gave one of the best speeches in recorded history. "We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win". 7 years after JFK's historic speech, Apollo 11 landed on the moon on July 20, 1969. It has been nearly 50 years since that day, and it is an event still widely discussed. Mankind has not set foot on a new planet or moon since.

      Great video. Maybe you should put 'Why' at the beginning of the title such as "Why go to the moon?" or "Why climb the highest mountain."

    You again wonder why it is he was killed. It was because, he was a visionary. A man who understood the responsibility we had as a world. He understood what we were becoming and wished to slow it down or stop it. Wanting to lead us towards peace, but also personal freedom. So again, you ask why he was killed?

      All great leaders make mistakes. We are all smart and dumb at the same time. Like all men he didn't always do what was right, however, he set the nation marching on a great path. This is a path we should resume today.

      Jim Jones well technically you’re wrong about 2 of those things. The bay of pigs was an Eisenhower era hold over that JFK had really little say over as he was lied to multiple times by the intelligence community and JFK planned on pulling U.S troops out of Vietnam by September 1964 and they were only there in the first place because again it was Eisenhower era hold over since 1957. JFK inherited a senate that was constantly in gridlock and a very dishonest intelligence agency and inherited many failings of the Eisenhower administration. Makes you think how much more he would’ve accomplished if he’d won re-election and then his brother Robert winning the 1968 presidential election.

      @Jim Jones the forces at work were behind the military issues, his dissent to these plans is what got him killed. Really no excuse for not seeing this with the info we have today.

      To clarify: I do not remember a speech from both Bushs, Clinton, Obama and not Trump yet. I remember speeches like this with positive motifs.

      The irony when talking about Kennedy to think Trump is in the same category is absurd.
      One is an educated man who inspired a nation to achieve absolute greatness and lead the world. The other is isolating America, does not understand basic science (or maths or literature for that matter). Not saying Bush or Obama had it, but Trump is the absolute antithesis of American greatness through science and knowledge and hard work...

    Very emotion stirring. I challenge anyone to sit quietly and watch this & not get the least bit verklempt. Maybe even shed an adrenaline fueled tear. You don't even have to be American because this speaks to us all. We've all heard snippets of this speech but those lack the power of the whole thing. The animation was the cherry on top.👍🏼 Awesome.

I listen to his speeches, follow his twitter and stuff and it just baffles me how he behaves so immaturely. None of his speech are on the level of Kennedy although lots of the previous presidents were the case like Ronald Reagan and Abraham Lincoln. But with the kind of speech Trump is giving it just seems that peoples standard for a president has dropped heavily.

    Theory: The stereotype of american patriotism came from this speech. I say this because... well listen to it! JFK was encouraging every american out there to get off the sofa and be productive! And it was very moving... Now if i'm wrong and american patriotism came from a different source well....... I stand corrected

    Just one thing, it's widely regarded that the catalyst for the industrial revolution was born in the English Midlands where canals are plentiful and we combined with fire to create steam that drove all the early mechanical processes.

    We do it not because it is easy, we do it because we want to find out how much we can accomplish, and despite the others alleging that we cannot achieve it, that we cannot be the best that we can offer, that we cannot be honorable, have dignity, and pursue truth, nobility and goodness of the kind that is helpful to everybody in an age where we see people abuse power, abuse relationships, abuse knowledge, we do it anyway. Why? Why choose to do something great? Why do something good? Why work so hard? Because we believe that we have something, anything, inside of us to offer, which we believe will help the people around us, our families, our friends, and our relatives. Because no man lives alone, and no man comes on the list of great people if they ignore the principle of sacrifice, and abide by the law of living the average life.
    We do it because it IS hard, if it was easy, wouldn't everybody do it?

    It's a shame that we in Europe (Austria) don't had/ have such inspiring leaders. They seems invaluable to a peoples ambitions when the 'horizon' is the moon or more aptly put 'beyond the stars' instead of fighting for against the wage gap or to reduce CO2 emissions to some set ambitious value, which are nonetheless ambitious goals but frankly they are on the ground and not in the stars.

    What happened to that mentality of human progress? Everyone in our world today seems to want to regress and go back to nationalism, war, segregation and greed. We need more leaders like JFK who stood for conquering plateaus and pushing forwards even though problems will arrive, even to risk things being lost at the ceremony of human progress. We need to evolve to make the world a better place.

    Yea. That was a good speech. You know I've been told I give good speeches. Actually some have told me I give the best speeches. The last administration couldn't speeches. But I know speeches.     That was pretty good, I think Buzz and Neal had a way better performances than Kennedy. The remake with Ryan Gosling was more cinematic but the raw grittiness of the first film made it seem more realistic.

    Wow, what an amazing orator I had never known how deep and amazing the words of JFK were i realized just now why everyone felt cheated out on a brighter future with the assassination of our president John Fitzgerald Kennedy and his son who had the same genes ideas and words and leadership that flowed so freely and effortlessly as did his Father John.

    The rhetoric was strong in this talk. Rhetoric has a poor reputation in the way it is used by politicians. However, JFK uses it well here to inspire. It's a well written and well delivered speech.
