Is Wegmans WORTH THE HYPE? NYC Astor Place Wegmans Tour & Review

  • Wegmans might just be the most hyped up supermarket in the US, if a supermarket can be hyped up! Wegmans began in Rochester, NY, and became known for fresh produce, great fresh foods, a pleasant shopping experience, and helpful and genuinely happy workers. This has led me to wonder, why do people love Wegmans?
Wegmans recently opened its first ever location in Manhattan, at the new Wegmans Astor Place location. Wegmans at Astor Place is already very popular, being very crowded and with many people already buying the hype. But is Wegmans really that great or is Wegmans overrated and just all hype? Why is Wegmans popular?
We set out today to find out if Wegmans is really as awesome as people say. We will try the famous Wegmans sushi bar, the Wegmans pizza station, and the famous Wegmans sandwich section. We will also tour the Wegmans Manhattan location and show you all what they are offering. Apparently the Astor Place location is even known for fresh fish being delivered three times a week from Toyosu fish market in Tokyo! Reviewing a supermarket may seem like a strange topic for a video, but perhaps this one is indeed worth all the hype!

I lived in Central NY for 12 years and Wegmans is the only grocery place I go to. And I was so happy when they opened one in Brooklyn. They have the best produce , the only grocery store I get my sushi , they have a lot of Vegan options and they have the best customer service.❤

I grew up with Wegmans in Rochester well before they hit their ready-made craze. Their real strong suit is their own brands. They have just about everything under that umbrella and it's price competitive, even against Walmart depending on the product.

Wegmans has a great selection but most of their prepared foods are quite expensive for what you get.
Some of their grocery items are more affordable.

As a native Rochesterian, made me happy to see you review the new Wegmans. Congrats on getting one in Manhattan! It's always a quality supermarket with excellent selection/beer aisle/bakery/produce first....with takeaway food as an added bonus. Around here, they're known for having the best subs. (Gotta try the Danny's favorite with the spicy ham) And yes, for what it is the sushi is phenomenal. Enjoy!

As a former NY upstater, many of their stores have sit down areas where you can eat the freshly made foods. I'm guessing that the cost of floor space in Manhattan precludes this. Without a doubt, the best grocery chain in the Country.

Someone had commented because they don’t want loitering homeless people. However Whole Foods In Manhattan has seating if I remember correctly at their Columbus Circle location and their Union Square location

There are Wegmans in Westchester, most NYC grocery stores are terrible, including the more upscale ones. The only one on level with Wegmans was Fairway and there are only 5 of them left.

The bakery was always great, and the cheese selection. When I lived near one I would go with the app and use the coupons to get discounts on grab and go food like sushi or salads. Their store brands were good too, it was more mid level price wise, so not as expensive as Whole Foods, without sacrificing quality. The pre-prepared fish/meat was always nice since it comes right in a container you can put in the oven. Was perfect when I was working weird hours and just wanted something fresh and easy.

Thanks for undertaking this visit UA. Wegman's has an excellent reputation outside of NYC. Our store, which is in a small city near the Poconos in PA, is the best supermarket we have. Sadly, the pizza is too weird here and mom and pop places do it better locally. The selection is very good for most items but I find the sandwiches merely okay. The produce is expensive but of higher quality than elsewhere in our town. The baked goods are also quite good but does not hold a candle to NYC fancy shops. All in all, I do like our Wegman's but it could use some modernizing and spiffing up. The NYC store is clearly a step above our's, but that should be expected outside of a big city environment. I look forward to your upcoming YT vids. Ciao!

Hey, NEPA neighbor! Might you mean Wilkes-Barre, PA? I appreciate your narrative and happen to agree. The bread at Wegmans as is fresh sushi (if you don't have a local sushi restaurant) was good, but often times, overpriced. We have a Wegman's in Ithaca NY and can never find a parking space closer to the store to accommodate my mobility issues. I really miss being able to shop there. Overwhelming variety and just plain great stuff. The bakery department has a huge brick oven. The meat department leaves one speechless with the variety. They have so many inventive salads and stuff. I really miss being able to shop there. I get my groceries now online from Walmart and pick them up without going in the store. Wish my local Wegman's had the same setup.

I'm not crazy about their pizza but they're ready made food to take home and reheat is really good. I especially love their swedish meatballs! I go to mine once a week. Their flowers are really fresh too. People do take pride in working for such a great company. I have friends who work there and they love it. Great review as always! I really enjoy all your content!!
I’m fortunate to live in North Carolina where there are 3 Wegman’s in driving distance. For sure it’s pricey, but for some items you just can’t get them anywhere else!!
If you have a location where you can make your own Poke Bowl, it’s the bomb!
Being from upstate NY it’s nice to have a store where you can get great breads and other specialty items.
And fyi, it took a month or so for my local Wegman’s to get their sushi rice dialed in…same as you it was too vinegary, but they finally got it right.
Some of the premade stuff can be hit or miss on taste (always high quality) so I use the app to help make my choices.

Your analysis on the pizza and sushi is spot on. This is coming from someone who’s had a Wegmans in their location their whole life. I haven’t tried their Panini’s but their subs are alright.
Like there’s better sub and pizza shops in my area but it’s one of those things where you’d get it if you’re grocery shopping. It’s still good enough to eat.

I love Wegmans finally down in NC but not near enough to me. There were many in the DC where I used to live. I like the variety of good quality food. Their produce pricing is very good for such a large store. I enjoy having greater organic options. THeir baked goods are great. Hi UA, that looked very good overall. In Los Angeles area the sorta equivalent would be Bristol Farms. An upscale market with very good sushi and fresh foods. That store you were in is a cut above anything here, I think. Another elite chain here is Gelson’s and they just opened a new stire, near me no less. I think they had Wegman’s in mind as some of the artwork I’m seeing is reminiscent of what you showed. It just opened, I’m going to have to check it out. The difference between Wegman's and Whole Foods is that their hot food bar and cold food bar typically looks good and tastes good. Whereas somehow WF's food can look fantastic and taste nothing like how it looks. I told my wife that those skinny little chefs and cooks at WF is bad sign. He's from Italy, and has. been in the Bronx for years, this is his last location. This video was great but, you just showed the take out section. Dear UA, As always, your content doesn’t disappoint! I have had the pleasure of visiting a Wegman’s, and I feel that you nailed the joy that we foodies feel in the presence of so much gorgeously presented food.
My husband and I become more fond of you, and our respect for your talent grows, with each video we watch! So please understand that my observation comes from that place of fondness and respect.
Please be cognizant of, dear UA, of your use of the word “like”. I have two grown children who are close to you in age and (I’d like to think) intellect, and they overuse “like” in their speech as well. I find myself doing it, too (not often but…..I get the appeal!). You are such a brilliant guy; I know that once you’ve become aware of when you are overusing “like” in your speech, you’ll modulate it. When I was your age and slogging through 10 feet of snow, etc., yada yada, blah blah, the term people overused when speaking was “Umm” or “Uhhh” and usually when they were searching for what they wanted to say. Teachers often would make students aware of this kind of thing-and make it painful enough through grading that we’d modulate our speech. Just saying that I get it and have been there.
I know you can find an alternative! You might want to just review some of your content and draw your own conclusions, which I am quite sure you do anyway.
All my best wishes for your future success! And thank you for your hard work and the effort you clearly put in, to make your content relevant and engaging.

Very fair. It's my favorite supermarket, it is expensive but overall the selection and quality is excellent, in addition to the people that work there. I cook quite a bit, so especially if you're a foodie or a chef, it's solid.

I'm from San Antonio and the home of HEB. The cult following for HEB is MUCH bigger than Wegmans. But I will say that Wegmans is definitely number 2!

I think you need to try the pre-made stuff, cause sometimes you dont have time for a freshly made sandwich on a lunch break. I really want to see more quality grab-and-go items in the supermarket. Im not always in the mood for fresh, Im fine with fresh enough but ready.

I love your video going into Wegmans, but I was disappointed because you didn’t show the bakery area at all or any of the candy section. Maybe you can go back there one day and do a video just on bakery items and treats and snacks. That is an amazing Wegmans. I wish we had them in Illinois.

Come to Buffalo, or Rochester even Syracuse then you will have actually experienced a Wegmans as it's simply too tough to build a full Wegmans in Manhattan. Not going to lie his video annoyed me by all the doubt he had and he barely even showed the actual grocery store. He made this appear as we lunch spot more than what Wegmans really is. So when you are ready to full experience Wegmans head over to Western New York... also NEVER walk out of Wegmans with out one of their subs. Go Bills

Hey UA in depth review as always. Really glad you visited Delmonico, one of my favorite steakhouses of all time. I have recently came across 2 lesser known but def top tier steakhouses for their food and service. One is Vinyl Steakhouse, great bone in strip with some of the best crust and temperature control I have ever tasted. Love how it was served on a burning hot plate straight out of the broiler. Terrfic service, slight downside would be the lack of complimentary bread and can be over-salty when it comes to seasoning. They took out the app that was too salty from my bill even though I'd finished it and without requested them to do so. Had a pleasant chat with their team and they even sent me a free banana split.
The other one would be Carne Mare, their Gorgonzola-Cured Wagyu Striploin and Prime Rib are imo even better than Delmonico's, which means a lot to me since I have been going to Delmonico's so many times, even celebrated my birthday there this year after they'd reopened. Carne Mare's complementary bread is a play on garlic knots, so soft and pillowy, perfectly seasoned and warm. Aside from their grilled oysters, other apps were kind of a lackluster imo. Potatoes rustica and mushroom marsala were very rich and filling. Their chocolate cake was one of the best in the city. Would love to you reviewing these 2 places, looking forward to your new videoes.

I would describe that place more of a food court than a supermarket, but some of that stuff did look good. I am sure too pricey for me. However the amount of people would scare me away.
