I came here because I have been experiencing hair loss ever since my doctor switched me from Bupropion sr to xl a little over a month ago. I am on the 150 mg dose though, not the 300 mg that you're speaking of. However, after about a week on the xl dose, I noticed a large increase in overall shedding. I had my thyroid checked and it was optimal. I have had thyroid-related hair loss before and this is very different. I didn't put it together with the change from sr to xl until a few days ago when the amount of hair coming out started to look like chemo-related hair loss. I've never seen anything like it, on myself at least, I am an RN and have seen a lot of chemo hair loss. It's almost as if it has just shut off my follicles, 30-40 long healthy hairs at a time are just sliding out of my hair, and that goes on all day. My shower drain looks like a mouse is trying to get out, there is just so much hair loss it's shocking. I stopped taking it yesterday, I cannot wait for it to be out of my system. I really think the 150 mg xl dose is also causing issues. I've been googling and it seems like a lot of people also report the same side effects. I wish it didn't have such a long half-life, I really want to keep my hair. Thank you so much for making this video and helping us to understand what is going on.

How frustrating, I hope you find a solution too. I'm taking the same dose on the XL version and broke out in hives today. I've been taking it for 17 days. I'm not going to take it anymore. The hives freaked me out. Good thing I went straight to the ER and avoided having to get an epi pen shot.

Had similar experience and didn't really notice until a year after because my hair is generally really thick. So thick that I often have to get it thinned out. Not anymore after a year on this drug. I'm getting off of it. It sucks because it helped with my anxiety and depression. One thing I did notice is that my impulse control became worse too on it.

This is pretty much the same comment I made below but I wanted to repeat it here so everyone had the opportunity to read it....I was first prescribed Wellbutrin XL when it was still being given out as samples. It was seriously a wonder drug for me: not only did it pretty much make my depression vanish, I lost 30 pounds and my sex drive was through the roof. This was after trying 4 other antidepressants that didn't work for me. A few years later, I realized one day that this medication was not working for me anymore. I decided to go on some prescription drug chat rooms and found that there were many people who were having problems because they were being prescribed generic Bupropion. In fact, one generic was actually removed. At that time, it wasn't so much of a chore for your doctor to merely write a prescription for brand name only but pretty soon it became a situation where patients had to try 2-4 generics before it would be paid for by insurance companies and even then at a higher price. So I eventually quit. Years later, I tried again and even went so far as to use a Canadian pharmacy that was producing "brand-name Wellbutrin XL" but unfortunately it didn't work for me either. A few years after that, my depression got so bad that I tried two generics and finally got brand-name Wellbutrin SR. The one that is still produced by GlaxoSmithKline. Finally, I had found the original formula! It's such a pain to jump through all the hoops and it costs about $50 through my insurance per month but it's so worth it. I have literally tried 6 different generic formulations of Bupropion throughout the years and they just aren't right: they either don't work or the side effects are terrible. I always encourage people to try to get the brand-name Wellbutrin SR because it seems to be the only one that still works like it used to. Best of luck to you!

i also had to take a generic because wellbutrine isn´t available in my country. Turned out that GlaxoSmithKline just changed the name of Wellbutrine while the ingredient-list is the same. But only the XL version is available n my country. Theres no SR sold. I´m taking my generic since almost 2 months and it didn´t show any positive effect, it just isn´t working. I feel like i´m taking a placebo. I do take it with food because, in a group of bupropio user i was told to do so to prevent me from stomac pain and actually as i forget it during my meal and took it a bit later i got stomach pain. So i still take it with food. How do you take yours?
Also after 5 weeks of 150 XL, i took 2 pills meaning upped my dose to 300 XL since almost 3 weeks and its still not working. Do you think it will work if get the one from GlaxoSmithKline the 300 XL ?Or would i need the SR version?Hounestly what do you think?

When I was on bupropion, I had to have my doctor write "dispense as written" on my medication because the generic version just didn't work. It used to cost me out of pocket $80 a month for the brand name Wellbutrin since my insurance wouldn't cover it since a generic version is available, which isn't fair considering I didn't have a choice. If the generic doesn't work, how is that my fault? They needed to be inspected to see what was really in those tablets. Generic medications have worked for me for other drugs, but that Wellbutrin must be sensitive or something. It's nice to know (well, sort of) that other people have experienced this, and that it wasn't just "in my head" or something. I hope they fix that so that more people don't have to suffer like I did when the change to generic happened.

Bupropion has saved my life. My lifelong major depressive disorder is corrected. I’m no longer crying daily, sobbing and having suicidal ideation. I’ve been on 300mg for 2 years and it has helped me navigate chronic autoimmune illness. I resisted it for years and my only wish is that I started it sooner.

Hi. I still have questions about efficacy. Twenty years ago I was prescribed brand-name Wellbutrin (I don't think that any generics existed then), at 300 mg. (I assume it was XL, but I'm not sure--the pills were purple, I believe). It was MIRACULOUS. I suddenly had energy, focus, huge improvement in executive function (apparently I have ADHD, but didn't realize that until recently, at age 60!). I took it for a few years.
Recently I decided to go back on it to deal with some of the old issues. I've gone through several variations of dosage and release-method--now all with generics.
The medication that was life-changing 20 years ago is now like taking M&M's for me--pretty much zero effect on anything.
Is there any way this could be due to the fact that I can only get generics? I fully expected them to work as well as before, so I'm not just being paranoid about generics--I was really surprised at how utterly ineffective they've been (no side-effects, though).
Is there any way that the brand name simply works much better than the generics, at least for some people? I've recently had depression that's as bad as it's been in MANY years, while taking Bupropion generics regularly.

Drug responses, both psychologically and metabolically change over the course of your life, even if you're not taking them and you have a break like you did. So I don't know about USA generics, but in your case yes, the drug seems to have stopped working... But there's a chance it will change again. Try it in a couple years away.

I know that when I was originally on Wellbutrin years ago, it was LIFE CHANGING, AMAZING stuff! But since generics are now available and the brand name is prohibitively expensive, I have tried 3 generics, another brand name and now take additional drugs to help. They do help, but I would so love to be on brand name Wellbutrin again. It wasn’t just helpful in an incremental, barely noticeable way, it was TRANSFORMATIVE!!! But, everyone just says, you’re wrong the generics are the same, so…

The other thing I noticed (which is the main reason I went off of it again) was that my memory would start to get quite bad (not that it's great to begin with!) within a few days of starting even a low dose of generic Bupropion. I kinda need my memory, so I'm a little afraid to try it again, although I guess it's possible that there are other physiological reasons for its lack of efficacy for me.

In regards to medication dumping, I was having a conversation with ChatGPT about, are there risks of certain foods that can increase my stomach's acidity and change the release of Wellbutrin XL? It said, in general no, but:
Things that could affect stomach acidity:
Antacids or Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs): If you're taking medications to lower stomach acid (like omeprazole or ranitidine), it could slow the dissolution of the extended-release coating slightly, but this isn't typically known to cause major problems with Wellbutrin.
Highly acidic or alkaline foods: While everyday foods shouldn't cause significant problems, consuming something highly acidic (e.g., large quantities of citrus juice or vinegar) or highly alkaline (e.g., some mineral waters) might have a small impact, but there's no strong evidence suggesting it would lead to medication dumping.

So, when you said, “Wellbutrin XL, did you mean the generic Bupropion XL? We are talking about the generic than brand name- that this is the problem, right? I’m just concerned about hair loss. I have the brand name Wellbutrin 150 mg XL

This issue was only with one specific companies generic version and only the 300 mg version. I have not seen any issues with hair loss associated with Wellbutrin clinically but I never dismiss these things as it could be possible in rare cases, I would not consider it to be a common side effect. Hope this helps

It was once specific manufacture and that medication was removed from the market. It was specifically the extended release version. For the most part I do not see an issue with using generic medication as cost is an issue for many of my patients. The FDA needs to do a better job ensuring the quality of medication, there have been several examples of contamination recently specifically with metformin most recently. I appreciate the comment

I was on bupropion for 9 months and around the 8th month mark, I started noticing symptoms from the medication. Even though I didn't have any prior to that. Regardless, it sent me to the ER because i started having panic attacks and pretty heavy anxiety. Thought I was gonna die. It's been about a little over 1 month since i quit, and things have definitely gotten better, but im still having withdrawal symptoms from the medication. Im wondering if anyone else can relate to my experience, and did you get better eventually?

    • @ShrinksInSneakers
      @ShrinksInSneakers  Рік тому +2

In general side effects start early in treatment and get better with time on the medication, but anything is possible. Withdrawal effects when stopping medication can be a real problem and in most cases we are doing a slow taper to avoid that problem when someone is coming off a medication. Often a way to see if it's withdrawal from the medication is to reintroduce the mediation in a lower dose and see if the symptoms resolve. Hope this helps

In my experience taking it 4 years ago for smoking and very recently for depression. It makes you rage with blinding anger. Be extremely careful cause it says on the label may get anger or agression but they make it sound as it's a less common side effect when it's actually the main side effect. I've talked to others that have taken it ,that said it did the same thing in regards to the anger. It honestly should be recalled. It's a horrible drug . Everyone is different but myself and many others have reported it . If people that are close to you are saying why are you so angry all the time please think about it , that this could be the cause . Hope this helped someone out there✌️ also side note forgot to say. The first time I took it for smoking it gave me horrific headaches very close to migraines . I couldn't quite figure out why I started getting them the 2nd time when realized it was this med. Take it very serious and the anger though. You won't realize it until someone says something or hopefully you realize it. It's very sneaky how it works its way into that sector . Find out it's the uptake of adrenaline. Might as well market it as Adderall cause basically the same thing or close . Imagine it similar to taking a pill form of what the super hero hulk morfs into . It's that intense . Raging blinding anger . I'm not normally angry either normally chill and laid back. Avoid this medication and head my warning . This pill is toxic !!!

Tried it recently for 2 weeks and it was horrible. I was taking it for depression. Thought it would help with depression, I'm bipolar one . Welbutrin actually induced anxiety a lot . I also went into rage anger attacks. I think it's funny now but I had a sun glass holder in my car that wouldn't close. I got so angry and raging mad about I punched it closed. Yeah it was pretty bad , extreme for something so minimal . It honestly makes you a monster. Also one that has similar side effects and sort of a similar makeup is Topiramate aka topamax. Anyways I take Gabapentin now best thing that has helped my anxiety. I also take 600mg Ltheanine in the morning.

Was on generic bupropion 150 mg for 2-3 weeks ( from the VA ) and was on 75 mg for a week before.
Week three is when I woke up one day sore in my left leg. It hurt to walk. Then the next day my right leg. By day 3 my calf muscles felt fatigued. Then a week after I started getting muscle twitches/fasciculations in the leg then a couple days after other parts of my body.
It’s been about 6 days since I stopped taking it and muscle soreness has gotten a little better.
But the muscle twitching is still there, mostly in calves and thighs.
All blood tests came back normal, waiting on a neurologist appt to make sure it’s nothing else.
Anyone know when the full effects would be out of my system? I took it for about a month

I lost about 50 pounds my first year on it (buproprion 300 xl) without exercise, I just didn't have the appetite or interest in food and I could get full from a few bites of food and not want it anymore. It's been 3 years in it and I've gained all 50 of those pounds back plus another 50. My appetite is out of control, and I'm constantly thinking about food and what I will eat next. I took Wellbutrin Xl 150 MG with Lexapro 10 MG and it caused allot of bad side effects for me. It made me anxious, gave me anxiety attacks that caused asthma attacks. I literally had to be taken to the Hospital on an ambulance. It gave me really bad stomach aches, nausea, and made me throw up. I got constant headaches and irregular heart rhythm from it too. Although it did uplift my mood it wasn't worth the terrible side effects.

It's not for everyone and some people are slow metabolizers of the medication possibly causing more side effects. When I see this kind of situation I would first look to optimize the dose of escitalopram and add CBT before starting another medication. On the other hand there is good evidence to support adjunctive treatment so maybe that was the thought process. Another option would be to switch to another class of medication prior to adding Wellbutrin such as an SNRI like duloxetine. Just some thoughts for educational purposes, optimize what people are on, add supportive measures like therapy, and switch prior to adding

Talk to your doctor, do not make medication changes without help, they can tapper you off over a period of time to avoid withdrawal symptoms. Hope this helps

This entire video is about the XL version of the medication. The issue that was identified was a dumping effect that occurred because the extended release mechanism did not work correctly in one companies product.
