BUPROPION (WELLBUTRIN): Treatment for Depression/What are the Side Effects?

  • Bupropion or Wellbutrin is a medication that is used to treat Depression. Get a Doctors perspective and learn the symptoms of depression and how this medication can play a role in you treating it. You'll learn about both common and some of the more rare side effects that you should watch out for.
Bupropion (Wellbutrin) is in the family of medications called Norepinephrine Dopamine Reuptake Inhibitors (NDRI). They influence the amount of Norepinephrine and Dopamine that is available to help with mood and other functions of the body.
With depression you tend to have symptoms like difficulty concentrating, remembering things or making decisions. Fatigue, feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness or hopelessness. People experience sleeping problems, mood swings, a loss of interest in things that you once enjoyed, appetite changes, generalized pain, persistent sad or empty feelings and even suicidal thoughts or attempts.
If you are experiencing these symptoms you need to seek help from a professional. Go see your doctor and get an accurate diagnosis to figure out a good treatment plan for you. Remember depression and anxiety are real medical conditions and should be treated just as diabetes or high blood pressure need to be treated. You shouldn’t feel any different treating any one of these medical conditions.
We'll give a good overview in the video of the common side effects but its important to remember that most side effects if any are transient and can be minimized by working with your doctor.

I started 150 mg two months ago and my life has changed so much. I also did six months of psychotherapy, attended a support group, and have been taking magnesium and turmeric supplements daily, as well as omega-3 and a multivitamin. my anxiety and depression are SO much better. my ADHD symptoms are now manageable and I feel so much more at peace in my life. it’s been an amazing transformation. I’m 32 and I finally feel like a normal person.

@OC_Baseball_Collector typically that's how it goes the Drs have too many patients to focus on one person for more than 10 minutes. I found a Psychologist that took an hour with me explaining how everything work. I was shocked when I saw an hour had gone by I was wondering how long will I be here ? This happened after 3 years of in & out of mental health hospitals too . I still take Wellbutrin after 10 years. I'm not aware of side effects from this. I do from my SSRi .

Ive already felt positive effects within 4 days. I have energy. Im going to bed earlier. Waking earlier. ( i would sleep all night and day whenever given the chance before) im smoking less. I am much more energetic and doing the things i wanna do. Jumping right into projects. Instead of just wishing i had the drive to do them. My all around mood is already changing . Im excited for the future and cant wait to see how i feel with time when the med is in full effect. Im going to be an unstoppable force. When i was just a depressed person with no life before. I felt like I was drowning.. I took the step and searched for help outside of my comfort zone and found a great therapist who told me I was dealing with severe depression and repressed thoughts and memories that still affect me on a subconcious level... she recommended this medication...now i've been on bupropion for about 2 weeks and my life has completely changed.. im generally in such a great mood , full of energy , dont care to smoke ...I can honestly say this medication has helped give me control of my life again and feel like a normal person ... I feel the urge to do things I love again and on the contrary I feel like my anxiety is almost non existent... if you're dealing with depression do yourself the favor and seek guidance , we all need help every now and then.

How does Wellbutrin feel compared to adderall/stimulants?
I have ADD and anxiety/depression, and have been on stimulants for a decade.
Now, the side effects of adderrall-horrible anxiety, overactive CNS, etc- have gotten really bad for me, and I am trying to stop adderall.
Adderall has become way too intense for me even at a low dose, and is wreaking havoc on my body and causing dealt bad anxiety every day.

My doc suggested Wellbutrin. I am concerned that it will feel just like adderall, with all the similar side effects I am trying to get away from.
Can someone advise me on this? Does Wellbutrin feel at all similar to adderall in this regard?

@@whitneyterrell322 I don't even remember because sometime last week I stopped smoking weed as well. Wellbutrin has been resetting my addictions. First, my urge to smoke the tobacco leaves faded, then my appetite faded, now my urge for weed has faded. The only thing I smoke is weed and I use to smoke weed once a day EVERY day. From what I remember, weed and Wellbutrin went cool together. I didn't see any negative effects. I remember one night my heart was racing really fast after I had smoked a joint and taken Wellbutrin but I wasn't nervous I just laid down and waited an hour or two till it went away. that only happened once though.
But now I haven't smoked weed in over a week. That's the longest I've gone without smoking in about 3 years today my urge to smoke weed is nonexistent. I started Wellbutrin March 4th and its March 30th and I lost almost 20lbs. Some days I eat only once, and its a salad. And by the way, my sugar addiction subsided as well. I awarded myself with some macadamia cookies for breaking all these habits and losing weight, and the cookies made my stomach hurt. It's like my body rejected the sugar. Any addiction I had is starting to lose the control that it had over my mind, Wellbutrin is pressing the reset button on my irresistible habits.

He went outside to smoke, came in and asked me," were those pills to quit smoking"? I said," yell". I was surprised it worked that fast. All he did was lay in bed and eat and be moody. He would try to deny his moodiness but it's a vibe you send off, you know. Facial expressions tone. I at least understand my issues. I workout for a reason. He finally wanted to quit. He asked me to make an appointment for him and he told him, which I knew before he even passed out, he has high blood pressure so he also has to lose weight to see if it straightens out without meds he has 3 months till his next visit. Mostly they are also trying to see if it was caused by his smoking too. He has lost 7 lbs. I'm actually surprised he is sticking to trying to eat healthier. He used to only eat junk food and protein. Not eating a lot but not good and skipping meals and eating one big meal and laying down. Now he is eating healthier small portions and snakes throughout the day. Not sure how long he has to take it. Now only if his other excitement comes back after he loses enough weight that will be nice if it does lol.

Well, in my case (moderate-severe depression) Wellbutrin was extremely effective. While I not only suffered severely from the painful symptoms of depression, but was also unable to work and was at risk of having my cognitive abilities permanently impaired, my condition improved greatly just a few days after starting Wellbutrin (150mg XR). Specifically, I had no negative changes in thinking and perceptions, or negative changes in my personality. I felt a certain euphoric effect (thought that's what cocaine must feel like) but otherwise not like being on drugs. I also noticed that I seem to have suffered from mild social anxiety all my life, which I only became aware of when the drug made it go away. Also, I only had certain side effects (itchy skin, and the feeling of a slightly altered self-perception) for the first week, during the changeover process, which then went away. Now, after several months of taking the drug, I have slowly stopped taking it. At the moment I am still a bit more tired than before, which is logical because the drug had a stimulating effect, but I no longer experience any symptoms of depression. I can only report positive things about the drug, it has served its purpose without side effects. The biggest drawback seems to me that there is no 75mg XR dosage, which on the one hand would facilitate tapering (the tablets should not be split), and after the decline of acute depression would be a perfectly adequate dose for maintenance therapy to prevent relapse over a period of time.

It can be an adjunct to helping with weight loss but it isn't the cure all. Sometimes when medication starts working and helps us loose weight we can get a little more comfortable with being able to loose the weight using the medication as one of the things that is helping us loose instead of finding what our body needs to be able to do to get the weight off. Focus on the basics of avoiding refined sugars/carbs and just like any addiction it will lessen over time. good luck!

My doc suggested Wellbutrin. I am concerned that it will feel just like adderall, with all the similar side effects I am trying to get away from.
Can someone advise me on this? Does Wellbutrin feel at all similar to adderall in this regard?
I don’t want another med that causes increased anxiety.

Thank you for this video, I have always felt ashamed of being diagnosed with depression. But what you said about it, that depression is as just as valid and just as important to treat, like say...diabetes - well that made me look at it differently. Wellbutrin is working for me, and the fact that it has been around a long time assures me that it is safe. Amitriptyline nearly killed me! BUT having said that, everyone is affected differently. The main thing you said which is so so important is, open up & talk with your doctor if you need help - don't be ashamed - and follow up with how you're feeling if you do decide to take an antidepressant 🙂👍

Speak to your doctor about that. I’m sure the side effects will go away with time. I’m the third day on this med and have no side effects, this med has saved my life.
