Wow. I just watched another video of how to make polish cabbage rolls and I must say that the German ones look much more delicious. My sister used to make me cabbage rolls when I would come over because it's one of my favorite dishes, she has since then passed away and I haven't had a cabbage roll since and how I miss them, and her too.
Thank you, Holly. I am sorry for your loss, I can understand how you feel, I lost a family member recently. I hope you will give the recipe a try and will enjoy some memories to happy times of the past with your sister.
I’m middle eastern and we have a similar dish . We stuff cabbage leaves with rice ground beaf and tomato sauce , onions , and add spices. Thx for the recipe I will try adding cream to my recipe next time
I am sooooo going to try this!!! I’m of Swedish and Austrian descent, and my Grandmother made a really delicious cabbage roll with rice instead of bread, and added pork. The cabbage was really the only seasoning. This looks really great. I prefer the rolls without tomato sauce. Thank you, for this recipe!!!!!❤
Made these and they were fantastic! My mother made the other version with tomatoe sauce growing up on a very rare occasion. I just rediscovered cabbage rolls, thinking they were difficult and they are not, many decades later. I think these are my favorite version now! Of course, the cream and bacon have something to do with that, plus the caraway seed adds another nice dimension too. So good! The one thing I changed was using flour as a thickener for the sauce and it came out just fine.
My Mom passed away 10 years ago & I never asked for the version with the tomato sauce. Could you possibly give me that recipe? I would greatly appreciate it. I can‘t find it anywhere.
das ist gut and i don't even speak german! OMG! I made these and couldn't stop eating them. The sauce is out of this world. Especially over rice or mashed potatoes too!!!!!!! MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to leave such a great comment. Please remember that I am always here for you in case you have questions regarding the recipes. Guten Appetit :)
This recipe is absolutely delicious. I’ve never made a cabbage roll before and you most definitely have to put labor into them but you’re right, it’s so worth it! I made a few changes: We didn’t have ground beef so I used ground pork instead but went with beef broth, I added a little more bacon, and used smoked paprika. And for the record, toasted bread goes great with this because you can use it so soak up the savory sauce. My partner is weird about how rice and potatoes are prepared so bread was best this time around. Thank you!
Hi, loved watching the video!. I am English and my wife is Austrian, we started a game where we challenge each other to cook something different we have never done before. She challenged me to make "stuffed cabbage" so I hope this recipe is close!
Thank you for watching. Greetings back to the Philippines. I am curious about the dishes from the Philippines. What would be a dish you would recommend to try?
My grandma was from Austria and she used to make cabbage rolls but she would put rice in her meat mixture and with sauerkraut not in the meat but in the pan.
I was looking for cabbage rolls similar to my mother's cabbage rolls. She never cooked them in a tomato sauce. Always a clear broth & with additional cooked cabbage & kraut. This is not that. But it looks very good & I will try it.
She called the Sarmales - which is Romanian. But all the Romanian recipes I've found call for tomato sauce & I really dont care for that at all. I love tomato sauce on practically everything else. But not cabbage rolls.
Ohh, cool! I didn't know there was a german variant of this dish. Sieht super lecker aus! If i may, i'd like to reccommend the polish variant of the cabbage rolls, which are cooked in a tomato'ish broth and served with creamy tomato sauce. It's one of my favorite dishes ever!
Yum, looks so good. I'm going to make this but substitute finely ground almonds for the bread and bread crumbs to make the whole dish lower carb for "keto"
You dont need bread or crumbs. I make it, and I don't substitute the bread. No need. It's more of a filler than required. I do use an egg to help hold it a bit
Looks great, my only question is if you could use a roux instead of a slurry. Cornstarch would have only been around in relatively modern times since corn came from the americas. Is a roux more traditional?
My grandma has passed away. But when she made cabbage rolls she insisted you had to mush the meat mixture with your hand. I would always go EEW and we would laugh. Thank you for the reminder.
Oma had me pear back the big centre vein of the cabbage leaves, to make rolling them more even and prevent the vein snapping. Never questioned it and now 30+ later i still do it her way, talk quite and carry a bloody big wooden spoon was Omas way. Alone with the odd dope slap to the back of the head. Now i pay with adding different herbs and spices to the meat and the broth tends to be tomato based and spicey made with turkish tomato and chilli paste.
I never had sarma, but I think it is almost the same, but the sauce for sarma is made with tomatoes. Some German recipes make cabbage rolls with tomato sauce too. I like both variations. This one in the video is my favorite for the winter and the tomato sauce based recipe I prefer in the summertime
I think I would like the chicken broth with this. I know on your home page you say you can use either chicken or beef. This looks like you've used chicken broth here.
You are not alone, wrapping the meat into the cabbage can be frustrating. But it will still taste very good. We have a saying in German: Übung macht den Meister which means repetition makes you master a task :)
My Daughters mother n law who was a German National disliked me but liked my Sweet and Sour Cabbage Rolls so much she asked my Daughter for the Recipe thinking my Daughter herself made them. My Daughter never wanted to learn how to make them so she couldn’t tell her the Recipe. I make them Sweet and sour with warm spices. No tomato soup, juice or ketchup
She tells you where to go for the full recipe and description. Plus on the page , next to the name, there is an arrow. Tap on it.Stop acting so rude and impatient. .
Love this one! 👍 Even with savoy cabbage one of Germanys delicious classics.
I like it with savoy cabbage too, I think it is even more flavorful
