amazing that 70 years ago there was a horse and single bottom plow. now you have gps guided tractors. i am not a farmer but know many. thank you farmers.
70 years ago would be 1950. Very few farmer MIGHT have been using a team of horses and a plow then, but most farmers were using tractors by then. My grandfather's farm got its second set of tractors in 1939 - six 9N Ford Fergusons to replace the Fordson tractors they had been using.
Car Mo bud this is more practical than you think. The 21 bottom plow might not be but a similar sized tractor on an 80 foot cultivator or a 60 foot air drill is not impractical at all. Hell some of what they're running in Canada and Australia is even larger and more powerful
In background was the longest Train, which i have ever seen! I like the non-smoking tractor engine. All germans small dirty diesel tractors are smoking very much.
thats not even a long train.... do you know understand why american cars are built like boats? because we have 400 miles to the new town....and its all flat open nothingness. also, our trains are damn close to being one of the cleanest methods of heavy transport....once they get up to speed, they use very little fuel government regulations have made them even cleaner
I'd jump at the chance to shine those plows, just hook um up hit the field drop the plows and open the throttle wide open and in a couple hundred yards they'll be nice and shiny especially if they were oiled or greased after last use while they were still rust free
Bill Dietrich, the inventor, comments that this is a very nice video. For spectators, the best spot to view this plow is on the right hand seeing all 21 mold boards rolling soil. This plow was 1st shown by DMI at the IL Farm Progress Show in 1978. The show site was approx. 20 miles southeast of Springfield, IL. To transport it to the show site, it was not disassembled. We backed it on a stretch flatbed. From the draw bar pin to the tail wheel is slightly over 75'. It was pulled with a Steiger Tiger with Cummins 1150 engine turned up to 600 HP. All 8 of the 30.532 Firestone tires were filled with water for extra weight.
@@cdjhyoung Thank you for asking. I had to ask the boss. Bill Dietrich says, "DMI production plows were designed for 12" - 22" spacing. The 21 bottom was designed to be operated at 23" per bottom in order to take the 40' swath. For the Alvordton, OH demonstration we ran various widths including 23"."
@@carolphillips4588 Thanks Carol. I've made a number of comments using 16" in my base calculations. I think I'll pass on going back and correcting them. It looks like that rig can do pretty close to 30 acres an hour.

Some of the good things in America, big tractors, train, gators and pickups!I do Think the Plough is to big foar any efficiency since its not a rollplough wich makes to much empty driving when turning. It also needs a lot of ground to turn on. But sure thing it makes a nice job!
A roll plow only has an advantage when the fields are small. Most American farm fields that this equipment would be in are a half mile long and 330 plus acres in surface, or bigger. Turn around time at the end of the field is a small part of the time spent working in that field. The other part of the equation of efficiently plowing is you open the field in such a way that you don't double back on your work area or pull that long equipment into a sharp angle. A totally different mind set than is used in Europe.
Personally don't have any rice paddies, there are none in the UK or EU as far as I've seen. We do have a hill farm in Mid Wales though..hence reference to 4wd Zetor where we keep a few hundred sheep. That..would be the context of my comment.
On the contrary..I think your perspective is a very narrow one - one which cannot understand anything other than what is familiar to you. Whatever..I don't think so.
The 21 bottom DISC Plow is very good ,time saving, covering more area in lesstime.(6 big tires, 6 small tyres,....what may be the fuel consumption, & maintenance ,consumables..etc pl) S S Rao
Fantastic but in Brazil we do two crops, soybeans and corn in some regions such as wheat crop use three large tractors to drag planter at the till. Only till the soil in the planting of cotton. translete by google
my tractor is only 55 hp but it moves most anything I hook to, but with Big Bud I think I could move my entire farm, maybe move it south a few hundred miles where it is warmer in winter, ha

My Massey 65 struggles with a 3 bottom plow. The the 3rd blade is out of alignment and barely touches the soil. Its amazing to think ANY tractor can do 21.
Interesting to see people commenting without first doing a little research. This was only a demonstration for people to watch. Plowing for fun if you will. That tractor was built in 1977 making it an antique. It is no longer in service so stop comparing it your modern day tractors like it was built yesterday. Instead compare it with a john deere 8640 or an international 4786 both of which were available around the same time.
okey doky not a sound comparison. This is a 525 horsepower machine and believe it or not, there's still plenty of big buds out working fields. Big horsepower like this is practical nowadays
When they add that many wheels to a tractor, where does it stop adding traction and start loosing power from the extra weight of the additional wheels and tires. Does 6 wide give it more traction without loosing power? would 4 wide provide just as much traction with less power loss due to less rotating mass?
Johny reb, in central WA state 25 yrs ago some farmers were using Big Bud 550's pulling 50 ft tandem discs. discs are widely used in earth fill construction for compacting the soil. when the farmers figured that out they got rid of those large heavy discs.

I replied, antagonizing, hp today isn't the same as then. there's other factors, I know. there aren't any videos of other tractors trying that I can find. I'd like to end the debate.
This big of a plow is not really all that practical in today's farming. Very little land is moldboard plowed anymore. Mostly farmers use chisel plowing if any plowing at all. This plow was built as a proof of concept, kind of a "LOOK WHAT I CAN BUILD!" sort of deal. Once this kind of plow reached 12 bottoms, problems with keeping all the plow in the ground started to arise at the same time the plow was going out of style. This plow requires over 900 horsepower to pull at full working depth. No single tractor in production today has that much power. This Big Bud no longer has the factory engine, it has been upgraded by about 450 hp.
In another video the owner of this tractor states that the tractor uses 3/4 gallon of diesel fuel per acre plowed. If this plow has 21 - 16 inch plow bottoms, it is plowing 3.39 acres for every mile in travels. It is going about 6 miles an hour. So it is using 4.5 gallons of fuel an hour to plow 20.3 acres. that's pretty efficient on fuel.
