- This is one of the most unique trails I have ever had the pleasure to hike. With lakes, ponds, overlooks, and beautiful scenery every step it's hard not to rate this as one of the best trails in the US.

In my opinion the terrain in northern Minnesota is the ideal hiking terrain. I could be biased having grown up in Minnesota but I love it.
+TheRjmayer it's pretty awesome. Similar to PA
Like Heaven up there.
I love it there! Love my home state’s topography
It’s so cool to see someone who has traveled so much be able to come and appreciate my home state! Northern MN is one of my favorite places in the world and holds so many special memories for me and I am glad you were able to experience it, as well as your viewers experiencing it vicariously.
MN is pure heaven! Exploring this wonderful state everyday.
Lake Superior is the deepest and coldest of the Great Lake group. It is also the cleanest!!! I lived in Minnesota for over 20 years before moving to Fort Wayne Indiana!!!
I lived on Erie for over a decade... Not clean 😂 I want to go to lake Superior! So pretty
Have meant to watch this for a few years now but just now getting to watch it. Been sick in bed the last 24 hours so no better time to watch this.
Feelin any better? This was a fun time for sure!
Just sayin...... I think you've got a lot of fans out here who would love to follow you guys from Georgia to Maine. Happy for you guys that you're getting to do this. Another great video! Keep up the good work.
Gary is going to be hiking it next year. I may follow in 2019, i'm actually starting to set aside some money in case it does happen.
I just started getting into hammock camping! Awesome to see someone dong the SHT this way!!
We lived in Minny for several years and made it up to the North Shore every summer. I'd love to get back and hike the whole trail. Great video!
Doing this mid October this year. Can’t wait. No bugs, cool days and nights, not tons of people. Paradise.
Such a great trail!
I just want you to know that I'm living vicariously through your backpacking vlogs. Lol. I have a 2 year old so hiking is a little difficult for me right now and it's killing me. I want nothing more than a beautiful view to remind me how small I am. I miss that feeling so much.
I hear that Bree!
We have camped on top of Carlton Peak, the red squirrels are vicious in the morning! Nice rock climbing there too!
Catching up on some of your other hikes before you start the AT. This one was excellent! Great views and liked that you put a mileage update in the corner at the end of each day. Therapeutic on the mind and soul just watching the passing scenery--even though you're doing all the work! Looking forward to Part 2 tomorrow with a cup of hot coffee. Thanks for posting these.
Lol, we're rain gear twins! That's my exact setup. Works well. Btw, it's amazing how well peanut butter goes with pretty much anything on the trail.
+Tim Watson for real haha peanut butter and olive oil make everything better.
Same here! Love peanut butter on the trail and exact same rain setup for the past two years!
Great ending. LOL Gary so reminds me of Trail Slippa in the Syntax 77 videos. You guys are a great pair. Thanks for being recon men for my future hike. Shug has opened my eyes to the beauty of that area. Thanks to all you guys for humping video equipment into the wilderness.
So much fun to be able to tag along like this. Maybe someday I'll give it a try!
I like what you said around Schroeder about being able to see how far you've come by looking at landmarks you've passed. I do the same thing. It never ceases to amaze me how far I've actually walked when I look at the trail behind me.
There's a section in part 2 that I believe we see about 100 miles away. Crazy to even think about.
Omg the suspense! Loved the video great editing! 1 year from today I'll be attempting the SHT Thru hike
Take it slow, around day 5 your body will stop being sore so much. Get a maintenance routine for your feet and do stretches at camp/before bed. You can do it.
Cory E, did you do it?
I just start see you today and I love it my favorite are The Great Smoke Mountains. I love all the water fall .I have a secret to tell you every time you eat make me hungry and snack the wholetime...Good night take care of your foot Lol.
Fantastic 2 part. Thanks for posting. Nicely done to both of you.
Thanks Regan
Congrats you guys!! Great videos! I had to chuckle when you got to the 'Highest Point' sign and you said...'it's all downhill from here'. I hike sections of the SHT every year...so that made me smile.
I try and say that line everytime I get to a high point on a long trail =P
Lots of up and downs on the SHT...great views though. I'm really glad you guys had a great time!
Great video. The additional length of the video flew by (for me) and was not an issue. I'm looking forward to part 2.
Really glad to hear, I was a worried about length
I told you I was rewatching these frozen! Never gets old! Thanks
I wanted to give a big thanks to you for these two videos! It’s what made me discover a trail in my own state I didn’t even know about. Didn’t start hiking till I saw these videos! Now after 3 years of section hiking this trail I just finished yesterday!! Thanks so much for introducing me to this trail that changed my life!! 🤘🏼
OMG, Where's Gary!? LOL Great to see you guys out for such a long trip. The scenery is amazing... those wild rivers and like you said, the views of Lake Superior don't get old. Can't wait for the next video!
It was great meeting you on the trail!
I love the North Shore. We day hiked the section with Oberg mountain in early fall and camped in a National Forest campground. The fall is spectacular.
Next time you're back, Lake Agnes is one of the best lakes to swim in. There is a great jumping in point near the West camp site. "Do not under estimate the SHT." Word. Up and down, wet, hot and humid in the day and cold at night... good stuff.
Very Good!! I watched the entire video. Awesome views and falls! I'm looking forward to watching part 2.
Great videos! I guide 4-5 day SHT trips with a HS group every year and I am going to put this into our resource guide for the kids. Thanks for the great content!
This is such a great video. The trail is amazing. Your choices of scenery are spot on. Some lol spontaneous humor and you've definitely got some self proclaimed wow-moments where I found myself saying "yup, you're darn right about that!". Looking forward to part 2!
Glad you found this video, it's still one of my favorite trips
Awesome video! Absolutely anticipating more. P. S. your hiker scruff + a buff makes you look like a pirate;)
+Trail Cat good!
this hike has some of the best scenery I've seen, such diversity so concentrated. those cascading rivers! great stuff Frozen
Always enjoy your videos Frozen! Very relaxing stuff bud!
Thanks dude! Been watching your lego stuff
Crazy how you do that lol!
@@FrozensAdventures Lots and lots of photos. The Jurrasic video was 133 photos. We had fun doing it. Thanks for checking it out! Hope you are well!
Great upload as usual.
+Mountain New ty
Hi from Holland, really enjoyed this video!
LOL - After that burger, fries and local beers you guys looked like you could hardly "plod" your way back to the trail! Very funny.
+Lucky Hiker our stomachs we're definitely slowing is down lol
Really outstanding video of a great adventure.
so much good stuff.. love the "falls to nowhere" .. you guys are so entertaining.. "long walks on the beach" hahahahah. Hornets ! argh! you looked a little puffy in that shot glad you are ok.. love the elevated trail bit, not sure i needed the shower scene hahahaha.. lots of great river shots in he second half here/ glad i have time to watch all of this it is non stop awesome/ and like you said earlier, every mile or so is a whole different type of forest/ love it
That must have been just a tiny bit heart wrenching to have ITB issues on day 1. I'm glad you were able to manage it for the rest of the trip!
I was so scared about it day 1.. I thought to myself.. all this planning, all that driving, money spent, just to be taken out by a stupid tendon... I took 4 ibuprofen that night, stretched and crossed my fingers.
Love your VLOG style. Thank you for taking the time to document the journey and fuel the fire for the rest of us!
Quite an adventure you guys are having thus far. Always good to have a hiking buddy you can share camp with at the end of the day. Looking forward to part 2.
Not the first video of yours I've watched, but I subbed after this. Great job on the hike so far. I saw a few familiar spots from Shug's videos. Looking forward to part 2!
Welcome to the channel. Part 2 should be out by the end of the week. Lots of footage to go through.
Nice job on the video. Love the SHT. Beautiful and unpredictable for sure.
oooo love a good cliffhanger! great video, excited to see part 2 :)
Great video! Love the cliff hanger. I hope Gary is okay!
I had to skim through this video, but I'll watch it all in a few days. We will be backpacking tomorrow on Grand Island in Lake Superior. We didn't reserve anything, but it should all work out for us. I hope! lol
Finally got around to watching all of part one...lovin all the rivers, ponds and falls, great job, really enjoyed it and looking forward to part 2 and finding Gary :)
That was a good one guys! On to part 2. U shoulda called, my bucket list too.
Leaving in a couple days for this trail, so glad I re-watched this- totally forgot about packing benadryl.
Peanut butter and pepperoni tortillas!? That actually sounds good. I wanna try it now. LOL!
at night wrap just above your IT band tight for about 3 minutes then take it off and the blood rushes to the area for recovery...3 times will do wonders....great video
I'll try that next time, I still carry a self adhesive bandage. I must say though trolling the glute with the trekking poles helped immensely.
I've been looking forward to these videos since you first started talking about this hike. Awesome job on the editing, and I'm looking forward to part two. Happy that you got to do this after so much planning.
Gary now has a trail name......Drunk Girl!!!
Shug's backyard !
Really enjoyed watching this vid Frozen.. your editing is pretty amazing- I'd stack it up against Sintax any day. Buying that rocket pure right now and hopefully it works half as well on my feet as you say it does..
+stowe18 it is like miracle cream. Get your heals real good to relive pain there . Remember it's sole purpose is to keep type feet moisturized. Put your foot in a sock afterwards so you don't stain your sleeping gear.
Loved the video! Can't wait for part 2. Keep up the good work! ☺️ P.S. That cinnamon roll looks amazing. You made me hungry now 😂
+UkatzGaming it was so freaking good. Everything at the bakery looked like heaven
Dude, I really enjoy your videos. Excited that you're doing a longer trip and looking forwards to your thoughts once you complete it.
I'll more than likely have a what I've learned video to wrap up the playlist.Just when you think you know a lot about hiking, the trail humbles you once again.
Great video! Funny thing is Gary with his shirt on and you with it off. Reversed rolls for this trip 😂
The red squirrels are vicious. Don't mess with those SHT squirrels. They have no fear and are made of pure fury.
Lmfaooo yess! As a child I TRIED to feed one a single peanut. That little F*#!er didn't appericate a single peanut and came after me for more. Pure red viciousness !!!!
@@dropexpectations12 lol bro you are 100% part of the problem
You can get punked!!!
@@ThaKKatt she was a child. lol
😂 people are so quick to jump!
Great video I can't wait for part 2!
Those birds look like quails. Family oriented, one soul mate for life. I could be wrong though, I am on the West coast so I could just be mistaken them for what we have here.
Interesting to see the sections of trail that I have not hiked. You were on the ridge above my house after leaving Indian Camp Creek. This coming Friday-Saturday there will be ultra marathoners on the SHT doing running a100 miles and ending at Lutsen Mountains. The winner will likely do it in less than 23 hours.
It's hard to even walk on the trail with the roots, rocks, and uphills. I have so much respect for trail runners. We saw a ton of them each time we got close to any of the state parks along the way.
Awesome video bro! Thanks for sharing.
very cool...Been thinking of doing the AP trail...
Great video. Thanks for sharing!
another awesome video man. and fantastic ending! leaving such suspense. just wish u had more videos but you've got your day job. makes sense. solid filming and look forward to part two. where did you and gary meet? seems like a solid friendship.
+carmine we met through a mutual friend. His hiking views are pretty much on par with mine. So we for the most part get along well on the trail though we don't hang out much outside of the trail
It's annoying how much fun you are having through all that misery lol. You guys are savages. Here I am watching this video at 1 am . Fucking awesome channel man.
Haha, it's a fucking blast
Can't wait until next year when the AT videos start coming out!
Let gary answer the questions.
Good video. Appreciate info.
Hii awesome page ☺ Keep it up!
Now after 3 years of section hiking this trail I just finished yesterday!! 😇
Congrats! How was the Duluth section?
Great video
Love seeing you again on trail. Gary need bug spray he is getting ate up
Hei awesome channel ☺ Keep it up!
Thanks for watching!
This is great! I enjoyed it. You should film at least one night around camp right before you go to bed. Make this trip 2 parts maybe?
Beautiful
Devils kettle is cool! We have a lake here called Blue Lakes no ones ever been able to find the bottom. Deep sea divers have tried, radars, no one has ever been able to find the bottom, we don’t know where it goes.
It's really cool to see you guys hiking so much. I'm 15 so there's not much travel I can do, and my parents have nor the time or enthusiasm to do it. I'm really the only one who enjoys hiking. I'm stuck in a box- one you guys seem to have broken out of a while ago. Since I don't have a car, I can't safely go anywhere. Anyone have any tips on how I can do what I enjoy, before it's too late and I get lost in the woods (in the future) due to inexperience?
Boy scouts if you can, that's how I got into it.
Jack Keating I am still sort of in the same boat as you. Except, I'm 21 now and have a car, but I'm in college full time and still live at home, so not a lot of time or money.
I did save up money from my job from the summers I did work, so I bought a lot of hiking gear. I was also lucky to go to college in Arkansas my first year. I lived near plenty of secluded hiking trails and wooded areas. I meet plenty of friends who love to hike, camp, and more. They showed me the ropes of how to do things. Now I live back in Texas where there are no outdoor activities near me. However, I have made plenty of friends in Texas and Arkansas, so some invite me to go hiking with them often.
Make friends with people who like to do that stuff as well as friends who parents love it too so they might invite you to go along. Also, think about taking a part time job to buy some inexpensive gear. Watch videos on UA-cam as well! Good luck
Slippery Storm I am in Boy Scouts (have been for only a year). Ironically every camping trip they've except for one has been on the days where I was on vacation. Not really educational vacations- just tourist-esqe stuff
Elexus T thanks man. Gonna take your advice. Seems you've got some good hiking opportunities on your hands. And happy travels with your pals
What month did you do this hike? Was the mosquitos bad? Thinking about doing this trail this year. Thank You
Welcome to Minnesnowta... no video on top of Carlton Peak? Short trail to Tofte Peak right before Carlton.. Did u check it out? Last week of September we will be up for 7 days... Can't wait for part 2.. Oh.... and that climb coming out of Temperance is a bich... really
+Iwazza Badboy we checked it out. People wouldn't stop talking to us and footage was unusable. However we did go down the other side trail for the tofte overlook.
Nice job love it frozen
+wink hvac ty
awesome video
thanks
How was teh cell phone reception out there? Planning on hiking it soon.
Wow Frozen! I've been anxiously waiting for this video production to be released. Excellent and probably your best yet. What a suspenseful prelude for Part II, but I must say I can't imagine the paranoia and horror you experienced when there were no signs of Gary. That would freak me out. Hope he is Ok and I'll have to once again anxiously await for Part II. By the way, what brand of hiker's rain skirt are you using?
+Steve Bassett haha thank you. Gary is ok. Also it's a zpacks rain skirt. Doubles as my ground cloth under my hammock. I love it
Ok, I feel like everyone has been up here but me. This one is on my list for next year (in addition to a trip to Aspen, CO).
If you don't do a long hike, go for section near temperence river, or far up north.
"And another beer" LMAO... can't wait to see the rest.
Another amazing video. You guys rock. What the heck is that sound track you play first thing in the morning? It is so catchy!
+boulder89984 all the music and sound effects are things I made in FL studio.
Not fair folk's you gotta share little brother up here with us californiayers I think i'm gonna start a" Frozen's California trail fund" you'd love this place if only for the hiking beauty, the fishing is off the hizzook!! lol!
Tell Gary that trucker's caps RULE!
Dude. Jealous. Freaking jealous. I absolutely love lake superior and the north woods. Filtered water never tasted so good. I will definitely make it up there during 2019. And yes, a video will be made.
Btw whatchu filming on man? If you're ever in the midwest, hit me up. I'd love to go check out a new trail.
Sony handcam cx405
It's God's country up there. I need to go back.
The Shoshone lake loop in Yellowstone has quicksand rocks like that along part of its shoreline. And it was right up against these thick bushes that could have been hiding bears. Not a great feeling...
Oh no! Where's Gary! No worries... think I saw him walking heading eastbound on 80 in Youngstown yesterday... should be home by Labor Day! Oh ya... his shirt was on.
RESTLESS OUTDOORS tell em large large sent ya
hahaha love the peewee herman reference
yes somehow truckers hats brings it all together
There was a sound.... sounded like a GARBAGE TRUCK falling of the Empire State Building!!!😲
milksteak flyer fefowggag yr
The campsites, are you supposed to camp at the designated campsites or is there the option to camp off-trail if to say it gets too late and don't manage to get to the nearest one? How did you handle the food storage at night, did you end up hanging it, any worry of bears in the area?
Some of the trail is on private lands, some of those sections have specific signs warning of no camping. If people are nice enough to allow people to hike on their property then try your hardest to get to the designated campsites. There are plenty of them along the way. If you need to stealth for safety then really practice LNT.
There is no camping outside of designated campsites. There are typically fire rings and latrines at most sites.
This is really cool. Having fun watching. Fyi, "nip it in the bud" not "butt" lol :)
Great video as always!! Could I ask what camera you use?
+Bro Waugh thank you. main is a Sony cx405. Bad weather is a GoPro hero 5 black
Outdoor Adventures thanks. Keep the videos coming!!
Whenever I get a artist block I watch your videos it helps clear my mind. Food for thought we have a women's yoga razorback tank one of our popular designs for the active woman I thought i'd share a fact that the razorback keeps you cool when active. If ever interested, Bella canvas (Brand) high end/ Medium end quality. Our website is down for reconstruction so we pretty much do word of mouth for purchases. Ill send you a picture on FB. Aloha braddah!!!!
Hey there, just a silly question: Can you wild-camp anywhere you like? We may move back to the US (which l love more than my life) but l'm super concerned about 'my hiking life' living in DC... Thanks for the video!
Not on this trail. SHTA sets up and maintains many campsites along the way.
@@FrozensAdventures Thanks for the quick reply. Oh man... let's see where l find near DC my Norway, Sweden and Scotland freedom 😖
Great video as usual! This trails looks tough, but amazing scenery. What do you use on your feet for blisters?
I don't really ever get blisters these days, my feet are calloused and I have my feet dialed down. I just use a safety pin to pop it in the off chance I do get one.
Wool socks work great!
Ok love part 1 - just have to ask - is that a tarptent and if so which model, and how does he like it? Second, peanut butter and pepperoni!!!!! gonna have to try that one. That is some beautiful country.
+GoFeesh 85 he used to have the tarp tent notch. He upgraded to a zpacks solplex on this trip. Liked both of them. More space in the zpacks and a lot lighter. But way more expensive.
GoFeesh 85 To add, the notch is a bit smaller because the head and feet area are narrow. The solplex is a lot easier to lay your pack under your feet.
What is the name of the salve you use on your feet? I appreciate your experience!
Rocketpure is the brand. You can find it on Amazon.
