I am not a religious person, but the first time I was in Firenze (like 13 years ago) I entered into the St John Baptisterio, I put my headphones and I listened this piece while I contemplated the murals. It was one of the most beautiful and etheral moments in my life.
She sings like a treble - pure, without vibrato. An opera wannabe would destroy this song, but treble voices and treble-like voices really tug at the heartstrings on the high C.
For a brief moment listening to this you can forget all the terrible things that humanity has done to one and another, and believe that there is peace and beauty in our world.
All these previous statements and comments make it absolutely clear that people listen very superficially to music, not noticing at all the profound meaning of this psalm that clearly says that murder and sin are inherent to mankind and asking forgiveness to God. That's summoned in the title MISERERE

Greetings from South Africa. The best heavenly rendition I have ever heard. Beautiful blended voices. Every part playing its role to perfection. The AAA soprano is immaculate. The Latin song msinging makes it even more powerful Just fantastic.
My husband passed this week, this was one of his favourite pieces, I am in tears and fall apart at the moment, but at the same time there is a peace the transcendents my grief and sorrow. I feel deeply at peace now.
The Institutional Church made a BIG MISTAKE when they let all of these great liturgical works fall by the wayside and substitute trite and foolish sounding Folk Tunes and guitar Masses. These marvelous works touched the soul in ways that today's church music just cannot come close to. This kind of music transports you to a place beyond words and tunes.
Robert Pavlick perfectly summarised sir. There is a core of something so utterly beautiful and intangible here that it might be as close as we get on this earthly plane to ‘ hearing and feeling the mystery of God’ x
True but consider two things. One: those high notes at the Sistine Chapel where this was once exclusively sung came from the castrati, not boys or women (who were excluded then as now at the Vatican). Two: how many singers and musicians at guitar or mariachi Masses are capable of singing in Latin and doing this type of music well.
I agree with you. Church music ought to be of the greatest quality. Fortunately I have found out there are indeed a few churches and chapels across the world where choirs do strive for beauty during Mass, out of deep respect for the liturgy. I pray you may find such a place not too far from where you live. God bless you.
Robert Pavlick we sing this every year on good Friday after the stations of the cross. It is a musical setting of psalm 51 the repentance psalm. We are a choir in Bride St Wexford Ireland.
I truly believe some music was arranged in heaven for us humans and sent to earth to give us a glimpse of heaven. This piece is one of 'em. A gift from God.

Quoniam si voluisses sacrificium, dedissem utique : holocaustis non dedectaberis Sacrificium Deo spiritus contribulatus : cor contritum et humiliatum, Deus, non despicies Sacrifice gives you no pleasure, were I to offer holocaust, you would not have it My sacrifice is this broken spirit, you will not scorn this crushed and broken heart Benigne fac, Domine, in bona voluntate tua Sion : ut ædificentur muri Jerusalem Tunc acceptabis sacrificium justitiae, oblationes et holocausta: tunc imponent super altare tuum vitulos Show your favour graciously to Zion, rebuild the walls of Jerusalem Then there will be proper sacrifice to please you - holocaust and whole oblation - and young bulls to be offered on your altar
@@banisteriopsiscaapi6446 You should be aware that of the 1.9 billion Muslims in the world you are not referring to every, single one. Your remarks are unkind and inappropriate, and certainly not in the spirit of someone who should be listening to the true spirit of this wonderous music.
I regard the William Byrd Ave Verum Corpus a close second. Is anyone familiar with the child Mozart’s encounter with this in a visit with his father Leopold to the Sistine Chapel? Dangerous!
This is NOT what Allegri wrote. Imagine that Da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa and subsequently other artists added bits and took bits away. This is what happened with the original Miserere. Yes, it's beautiful sounding piece, but it is "as arranged by" Alfieri and Mendelssohn, the latter hearing an ornamentation during a performance that he subsequently transcribed in the wrong (higher) key, hence the high "C" that makes everyone swoon.
Ethereal is a fantastic word to describe this song. It's just so special. I'm not a believer, nor am I interested in choir music, but this song is something else.
Agree. This is astonishing. Who is the human who created this? Can only be a genius or close to God. I have wet eys everytime I hear it even though I have listended to eat dozens of times
I have been to many churches, but I have never heard a hymn as beautiful as this one. God has blessed all of the singers with a great and awesome talent.
I haven't a clue to describe this miracle! It is wondeful to hear! As a musician, this touched my heart. The singing, with such poignant beauty, captured the eye within my heart. This chant will remain in my heart forever and ever. AMEN. God bless the singers!

Psalm 51 speaks of the sorrowful King David asking God forgiveness after committing adultery with Bathsheba, Uriah's wife and one of David's faithful warriors. The opening line: "Miserere mei Deus, secundum magnam misericordiam tuam", Have mercy on me, O God, according to your great mercy....Where David cries to God for forgiveness and mercy! Just a glorious prayer and song by Gregorio Allegri!
Yes, that was very sinful, more than committing adultery with his wife for sure, bad, very bad indeed. However, where there is sin, God is able to provide forgiveness if there is a contrite heart and decided intent to avoid sin in the future.....and that's what Gregorio Allegri excelled to present with his miserere.
When I listen to these classical church hymns I have tears in my eyes because the Spirit of the Lord moves in my heart. Enjoy it and Praise our God incessantly. He is worthy of all praise, glory and honour.
It's excellent. probably the only one I've heard to rival the 1980 Tallis Scholars version. Whoever managed the technical aspects of the recording is also to be greatly credited.
11 years, and how this song still forces tears into the eyes of many is truly impressive. The song seems to move you into some ethereal place within the mind and it is just beautiful. Such a serene sound produced by humans, I mean its extraordinary how voices can come together to create masterpieces like this almost as if angels themselves came to show us what true music sounds like, kind of makes you reflect on many things. Music hits places far into the soul and it's truly amazing.

The Lyrics of this repentance song masterpiece in English is Psalm 51 “Have mercy upon me, O God: after Thy great goodness. According to the multitude of Thy mercies, do away mine offences. Wash me thoroughly from my wickedness: and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my faults: and my sin is ever before me. Against Thee only have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that Thou mightest be justified in Thy saying, and clear when Thou art judged. Behold, I was shapen in wickedness: and in sin hath my mother conceived me. But lo, Thou requirest truth in the inward parts: and shalt make me to understand wisdom secretly. Thou shalt purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: Thou shalt wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Thou shalt make me hear of joy and gladness: that the bones which Thou hast broken may rejoice. Turn Thy face from my sins: and put out all my misdeeds. Make me a clean heart, O God: and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from Thy presence: and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me. O give me the comfort of Thy help again: and stablish me with Thy free Spirit. Then shall I teach Thy ways unto the wicked: and sinners shall be converted unto Thee. Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God, Thou that art the God of my health: and my tongue shall sing of Thy righteousness. Thou shalt open my lips, O Lord: and my mouth shall shew [show] Thy praise. For Thou desirest no sacrifice, else would I give it Thee: but Thou delightest not in burnt-offerings. The sacrifice of God is a troubled spirit: a broken and contrite heart, O God, shalt Thou not despise. O be favourable and gracious unto Sion: build Thou the walls of Jerusalem. Then shalt Thou be pleased with the sacrifice of righteousness, with the burnt-offerings and oblations: then shall they offer young bullocks upon Thine altar.”
Thank you..thank God that he can face our brokenness before Him. He doesn't turn His face away but opens His arms and say " I understand. It's ok. I've got you. I love you."

I learned that this piece was kept secret until Mozart was invited to listen. He said it was the most beautiful thing he’d ever heard. He copied it from memory and transcribed it, then performed his rendition of it. Instead of getting into trouble, they gave him an award of chivalric order. I didn’t realize it was Psalm 51 either. Just beautiful 🙏🏻🙌🙌🙌

This is one of my favarite psalm, written by King David after he committed adultery. I like to say it very often. We Christian Catholics pray it on Good Friday.
You may not understand but the reason you love this is because you recognize beauty and goodness when you hear/see it. Why? Because you’re made in His image Whom is beauty and goodness itself. Listening to this is just a TINY glimpse of the beauty of what awaits in Heaven which is what most people long for even if they do not know it. There are standards in the world and we are told there shouldn’t be and that everything js equal in value to everything else. This is not true. You recognize that this is a masterpiece.
It was written by a RC Priest. - Stationed at the Vatican. Commissioned to write music for the Traditional Latin Rite of Mass. This is his rendering on Psalm 51 "King David's apology to God for having committed a most grievous sin.
DonDraperism Actually, he isn't necessarily calling out your religious beliefs. He was probably just pointing out that you said that you repented to God for all the things you have done, which implies you have wronged someone in your life. And before you say anything, if you believe you have done things that need to be repented in your life then you have wronged at least one person in your life, namely yourself. It's said that true forgiveness is born within. Anyone can pray for forgiveness from an anonymous power, but only the strongest people can bear to forgive themselves for their own misdeeds.
DonDraperism He doesn't seem angry in his post. He is simply asking you why you don't make amends for your sins rather than just ask for forgiveness. If those sins include having wronged people then making amends to them is more genuine form of repentance than asking someone you have not wronged for a morally clean slate that does nothing to repair damage you have caused.
AsSereneMonstersRest Maybe he hasn't wronged anyone apart from God. it's something that we all do every day, and there are very few who realise it and ask for forgiveness. It's a very, very relevant comment on a video of a song called, "Have mercy on me, Lord". Miserere mei, Deus.
The first time I heard this, I was 7 or 8 years old , when the artist behind the exhibition "Threshold to the Kingdom" (which uses this music) gave a workshop at my school. The haunting melody at 0:28 deeply affected my little 7/8-year-old self and it stayed with me for months. I had chills every time it came into my head and I remembered how beautiful it sounded with the power of a full choir behind it. But over the years it faded from my memory, and I never found out the name of the composer or the piece. Then, a couple of days ago, I was listening to a compilation of classical music while studying, when the chilling melody from my childhood suddenly sounded, and I stopped everything I was doing. It brought tears to my eyes as I heard it for the first time in 12 years. I can't express how happy I am to have found this incredible piece, along with the reminder that music is profoundly powerful.
but do you know of the man (King David) who wrote the original piece? (Psalm 51 - the Bible) and the God he wrote it to? if not, then ask Jesus Christ to reveal himself to you. You will discover the true beauty behind this piece.
That's so lovely and touching. I have had several experiences with music like that, and wonder if I will find out the name, will I ever hear it again, but it always finds a way back into my life, or I find it no matter what.
Atheism in itself is a form of belief - since you can not prove or disprove God - only thing left is to believe or not to believe, but it is belief. Now, this masterpiece only depicts what we all deep in our self, call it a soul, long for, seek, need. To seal the deal, Catholicism has the privilege of having the most celestial music. It is a gift from Heaven.
Music of any kind goes way beyond religion, no matter in which context it is written, the beauty is in the combination of the human voices, and the composer helped a little :-)
@@Nicolai.c that is the must stupid and ridiculous thing I have ever heard, as if one's religion has anything to do with the enjoyment of music of any kind. Angels my ass.
@@098c9 Yeh right, did you notice the typo in Nicole Cosentino's message " the true and leaving god"? I thought it very apt and it gave me a laugh. And where do you stand on her bullshit?
Absolutely the most gorgeous thing ever that human do together. I love how all the voices blend together. The male voices are just divine. You forget that there are no instruments and then realise it's voices not violins. Just sublime!
This takes us back to the uncontaminated era of music. Still resonates with our Soul. Today ,only noise ,insolent noise , suppressing the Soul and the Spirit.
Hmm... 4 years has passed, to die in pace you'd better repent first, because this is all about in the "lyrics" of this piece, the music is "decorating" the psalm 51. which is all about repentance.
I've lost count how many times I have listened to this piece of music. Every time I listen to it I can't help but think of this choir. The singing is incredible. The most beautiful singing I have ever heard.
I was practicing this in a choir when I realized exactly what I was singing... When we performed it, the jimmies of the audience were laid down, and unrustled in the face of the song's majesty. A flying lawnmower passed over the moon, and all was at peace. For there was no need to be upset... The tears were cast out, and there were only dreams. At last, the Great Unrustling had occurred, as had been foretold in the Book of Jimmies.
Raydude25 Because atheists find it hard to deal with the realities of the spiritually sterilized world they live in. For that reason, they appear to enjoy trawling these types of videos and demonstrating their self-described "superior intellect."
With all due respect, I'm an atheist and really enjoy this piece. It doesn't matter to me if a song has a religious affiliation or connotations or the like, if I like it I listen to it
Religious affiliation is something of an understatement. This work is an admission of human sin, a statement of personal repentance, and a plea to God for forgiveness.
this brings me again and again peace in my heart. When there are inner storms, after a heavy day, after doubts and sorrows, pain and difficulties... this brings me peace and the message that God is mercy and LOVE;

To be more specific, this was based on Psalm 51, a Psalm written by King David for his remorse and repentance after he committed murder of Uriah and adultery with Bathsheba.
Jesus Christ is God in flesh. You have to accept him in your spirit your soul, he already pay the price for your sins. Go take the Free gift he gives you. And stop to hide yourself in your blind religion without any relationship with God. Accept the Mercy of Lord. Miserere mei Deus. Pslams 51.
This type of choral music is part of Catholic heritage and has its roots in the ancient Gregorian Plainchant renditions of the many psalms which monks and nuns chanted. I suspect few non-Catholics would have shown any interest in this type of music in the 17th and 18th centuries, especially as The Age of Enlightenment unfolded (and some would have actively condemned it). I am glad that more and more non-Catholics are beginning to appreciate this type of music, not just for the singing, but for the actual meaning of the words.
Non Catholics would have condemned it? Not if the words sung were the true Psalms. Non Catholics sang the same Psalms, just in a different format. The format...even today...is called Hymns. Hymns are some of the oldest forms of worship in all of Christianity. I must confess that I do love listening to a good chant in Latin though. 😇
This response sounds virtually identical to one I read on another channel. So much so I wouldn't doubt it's copy and pasted from a source that was written to debunk the Mozart connection which was in fact the topic of discussion on the other channel. Sounds speculative in the first place but after seeing it copy and pasted it just looks like some disgruntled catholic hates the story of Mozart copying it.
It is simply widely available on UA-cam so many have access to it. I'm Jewish and I'm a choral conductor/singer. I unfortunately never had the pleasure of participating in a performance of this wonderful piece. I listen to it as wonderful music, not liturgy. I just sent a video of it by another group (The Sixteen) and wrote that Allegri earned his respectable place in music history with that soaring soprano.
this is not a gregorian song (except from the fact that the composer is called *gregorio* allegri). it has polifony, something that the church banned from it because it was pagan. This song actually came in the 17th century (sometime between 1630 and 1640, in the middle of renaiscance (sorry idk how to spell it in english), when the art was bringing back the old "pagan" techniches, with polifony being of macedonic origin), but only in the 18th has been released to the public, as it was concealed and kept inside the sistine chapel for abt 150 yrs because the church considered it too beautiful and misterious to be free heard by the public, so any monk that transcribed it or performed it outside the sistine chapel would be excomungated. It was until 14 years old mozart visited rome, and after hearing it one time transcribed the 9 different but simultaneous melodies, returning later that evening to hear it a second time in order to perform some corrections and adjustements. He then brought it back to austria and shared with an english guy, that published it in england. After the church heard their precious song has leaked, they summoned mozart before the pope. He actually then congratulated mozart by his geniousity and since the music has already been leaked, there was no point in keeping it secret. The mozart transcription is flawless, except from the high pitched part (which you can hear in 4:11), that he purposetly added to the sheet, this part was later added to the original song by the church, for being considered a heavenly improvement. This song later influenced/inspired one of his masterpieces: Requiem, that contains polifony and a style which higly resembles misere. Not only nothing you said is true, you actually just said the opposite of everything that is: It doesnt has catholic heritage, it has macedonic (or north-greek) heritage. It isnt a gregorian plainchant and is totally different of the psalm nuns and monks sang in the cathedrals during the middle ages. There were few non-catholics in the europe during that time, even during illuminism religion kept being very strong in europe, but one thing is for sure: everyone was interested in this music. In fact, it was so popular that the church confiscated it to itself in order to even more increase their status, as the song was considered soothingly beautiful, heavenly and with a misterious aura. The song fascinated mozart, an enlightenment period composer and even inspired his later artwork, requiem, which was also released in the enlightenment period and was literally a chanted catholic mass. By the time it was re-released by the church it gained even more popularity, so no, no one condemned it. And by what I've read in the comments, people are appraising it by its melody, not because of the lyrics.
Just think that, you are a middle class merchant's child at Mozart's time, travelled a long distance to Vatican with your family and then you hear this beauty. If this is that impressive today, how impressive and majestic this was, to the ears of people that did not have the same chances as we do at those times.
One of the many Mozart myths, like the one about him being buried in a pauper’s grave. There were various transcriptions already in circulation - fact.

Someone give that soprano a gold medal; she's amazing.
She sings like a treble - pure, without vibrato. An opera wannabe would destroy this song, but treble voices and treble-like voices really tug at the heartstrings on the high C.
And her name is Elin Manahan Thomas
I don't think you're correct; I believe that is Clare Wilkinson, from a number of years ago.

For a brief moment listening to this you can forget all the terrible things that humanity has done to one and another, and believe that there is peace and beauty in our world.
There is peace and beuty in the word, bad makes more noise than good
All these previous statements and comments make it absolutely clear that people listen very superficially to music, not noticing at all the profound meaning of this psalm that clearly says that murder and sin are inherent to mankind and asking forgiveness to God. Not the catholics brought this music, but deep trust and believing in God and only he gave some People the Talent to create such music for his glory.

It does sound beautiful, but the angels of heaven will sound even more beautiful! This is the closest thing we can get to hearing angels sing
YOU mut have heard THEM too once!
Comparisons are odious.

Possibly the best choral piece ever... Allegri must have gotten his inspiration directly from the celestial spheres.
must? cretainly!

He also committed murder having arranged Uriah's death.
I becomms so `touched` & cried deeply. It`s like an transformation and all there matters is this when listening . . .

The Lyrics of this repentance song masterpiece in English is Psalm 51
“Have mercy upon me, O God: after Thy great goodness.

I am not a religious person, but I really love this piece.
Maybe you express your religiosity through this hymn(s)
You don't have to be religious to appreciate beautiful things.
Christ still loves you!
Czułam się jak w Niebie! Uczta duchowa!!! Bardzo dziękuję wspaniałemu chórowi i solistom! Gratuluję i podziwiam!!!

Tears started rolling down my cheeks when I heard that lady high pitch note! 😢 And it's my first time in my life I'm hearing this kind of music....😢
@@CodeZero8 Welcome. It's only the beginning for ya
It was written by a RC Priest. - Stationed at the Vatican. Commissioned to write music for the Traditional Latin Rite of Mass. This is his rendering on Psalm 51 "King David's apology to God for having committed a most grievous sin.
That girl sounds like an angel. I just repented and asked God to forgive me for all the things I've done. Thank you.
Why don't you ask the person whom you wronged forgiveness, that would make more sense.
dawoeee who said I wronged anyone? Also what is it about belief in God that angers you?
Absolutely superb. The soprano is spectacular; this is music at its supreme; truly the nicest piece of music ever written !!!
Composed with the knowledge and understanding of how musical notes and language can penetrate the inner recesses of the human soul. Extraordinary.

Well, considering that the original composition did not include the high notes...

Not only nothing you said is true, you actually just said the opposite of everything that is:
It doesnt has catholic heritage, it has macedonic (or north-greek) heritage.
