All a perfect circle songs in this user
I recently read a book about Genghis Khan. He was the person who originally came up with this idea of "forgiving of 9 crimes". He offered forgiveness to his most accomplished generals (if i remember this correctly). I think he did that as an exercise of trust and power. Trust that they could do 9 terrible things and be forgiven, and then power as he decides that they could not be forgiven for the 10th.
So, we have this song called "Crimes" in which maynard slowly counts to 9... then sticks on 9 and repeats it as whoever this person is continues to commit crimes against him (not actual crimes, but at least they are acts that would call for either forgiveness or condemnation), all the while gritting his teeth and saying "nine" more angrily.. Then, he reaches his breaking point by counting the next crime as the 10th, then continues to count the crimes as the 10th until ultimately he loses patience and trails off. Effectively deciding that this person is not worth the energy of forgiving as no amount of patience and forgiveness will change anything.
And to think, all that conveyed by merely counting to 10! But perhaps I am thinking too hard.
very well done.
I applaud this comment. Not sure if Maynard actually meant it that way but it sure as hell works out anyway, which is why deep music like this is so damned good.
I fucking LOVE that interpretation!!! Definitely sounds right to me!!
i definitely recommend that...and listen to the album from start to finish without skipping to songs.
WTF! The guy COUNTS and its STILL GOLD?!?
makes since now. probably the greatest album i have ever heard. usually you have like an album with maybe 3 or 4 good songs, i liked all of these songs instantly as soon as i listened to them!
I love APC ,I think is one of the most important bands of all times, because they have a unique sound, and that´s something very hard to achive, I pray every day for a new album, I wish they return some day
There u had
This album never gets old, sometimes I like to be taken back to a place in time and remembering why I'm still here.. 🕯️🕯️🕯️
Crimes, whether moral or legal, tend to come with the territory of being a junkie, no words needed this time. The junkie way of life and dealing with the consequences, be they physical or psychological, is what this album portrays quite frighteningly accurately.
*_unexplainable noises_*
I know what it's about. Track 8, Step 8 of the twelve step program.
Step 8: Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.
The whole album is based on it, each track representing the steps.
Okay Maynard is a God. He can make any band sound amazing! his volcals are so powerful.
If you listen carefully at around 1:45 he whispers "12". Best quality with headphones. I was thinking he might say 13 at some point because it is the album 13th Step, ya know? Crazy stuff.
he doesn't make it
to me, Maynard from Tool/APC,and Trent Reznor from NIN, are the two greatest songwriters ever, they actually put meaning into their lyrics and make you think about differnent parts of life
Jonathan davis too you fool
That just made me remember of belting out "Grey would be the color if I had a heart" at around 13 or so. Parents thought that was a bit dark....
Um, hello? It's MAYNARD JAMES KEENAN... Duh...
This guy shits gold... Everything he touches is blessed by the artistic gods.
except Puscifer that was a shit band
This song is an ode to Count Von Count...
Best - Band - Ever.
Sarap mag !!!!!!!!
Hola gabymsowa; gracias por subir el CD Thirteen step de A Perfect Circle, yo lo había comprado y lo perdí después. Muchas gracias. Buena suerte!!!
by the time you reach the ripe old age of 29, you learn these sorts of things :P
Friends in low places are as useful as friends in high places.
thats very good advice.
How come this song isn't on the full version of the album here on UA-cam?
I love the bass in this song 🎸💯🤍💛🤍💚
Just realized maybe the counting refers to the stages of recovery, since I heard that's what this album centers around
I was listening to it today and i also though of that. He's counting the steps and and when he repeats 9 several times i think he's referring to 9th step that says "Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others" which i think ties in with The Noose.
um what about seven
... I don't do cards I only do spiritual. number.
hmm well what about the read of the great gatsby that is the only one in there and the only option left of anything from everything out there that did have to do with me or still would because it would only be my own brain- which would probably be another one of another person trying to understand that too but hmm.
oh and I meant hinduism is just fucking ugly don't listen to me
hypnotizing..
i always thought that the "13th" step refered to the 12 step rehab program, that no one tells you what the 13th step is....??? thats just what i think...
I had this on cassette in prison...
Bringeth fourth good character!!!
My favorite themes from this band are The Outsider, this one and the nurse who loved me
the outsider pretty epic in some parts
@whiskeykamehameha ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!! Maynard is a lyrical genius not to mention that he has an amazing ear for music. His albums create feelings and emotions in me that I have never experienced through music before.
this is my favorite song
THIS REMINDS ME OF BATMAN.
I just started listening to this band, and I have to say they're different. xD; I haven't heard a band with this sort of style, and I want this album.
yeah same here they are awsome!
This song is 8th on the CD and the title is "Crimes". The 8th Step of the AA program is that one must: make a list of all persons he/she had harmed (i.e. a list of "CRIMES"), and be willing to make amends to them all. I believe this MJK's musical interpretation of that step. Of course this is only my opinion.
'Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind.'
Sorry to reply 3 months late, but to answer:
1. There's 12 tracks.
2. The term "Thirteenth step" represents a few different things, in this case, relapse.
I was confused by what you said... But then read the description... Lol
LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL
@tammyTOOTSIEPOP Considering the title of the album is 'Thirteenth Step', I'd assume it's more along the lines of the drug related 12 steps to recovering from abusing the product. The 8th step is making a list of the people they've harmed.
The '13th step' is relapse, where you basically go back to the substance.
Listening to this song makes me feel something's behind me... I look, then look at the monitor, and suddenly feel it's hard to look again. Fear of the...wait...wrong song.
*looks sleepy like* its a lullybuy....a counting lullybye to help kids go to sleep....wenever i listen to it and i wanna sleep i count with him...lolx
@grillchee Oh indeed, an interesting point :P
And don't worry about randomly cutting in, that's actually a fairly valid point you bring up haha. Artists tend to leave their music up for interpretation by the audience, so many theories will exist.
@p7social totally rules!!! I miss 90's grunge
I love everything about Maynard James Keenan.... How the hell do you get to copyright & have ads in this?
@killerkat92 I agree with you but you gotta love both of em for who they both are and man Danny carey, Adam, and Justin are bad ass musicians.. I love them both.. mainly cause I'm a drummer and Danny is a beast on the drums
Lmao Im calm im calm
i fucking agree with you 100%
apc is amazing and i have all their cds.... each album presents something slightly different to me which i tend to like when its just a little different each time.... instumentals usually get a better point across to me tho because u if u open ur mind the music can actually talk to u if u listen just right:)
maynard's whisper > ALL
@STALKER1777
I turned round 'cause I thought someone was calling me, then I saw your comment, and when I replayed it, my heart stopped for a moment.
Its about what your soul feels while its on. You should get that by now.
Please comment on the song meaning
You have a great taste in music!
The unexplainable noise is me taking a mean shit in the morning XD
@x4aperfecttool yet seems like songs in their are only involving maynard.. judith..3 libras ect. ect. idk about others.. they may have worked together on them
JupiterSaturnFilms: I tried to say that on comments section of the "Thinking of You" video. Not sure why people find it so hard to believe. He says it plain as day.
@EgagLatsev HOW CAN THEY BE.. the lyrics form the two were written and performed by the same person MJK..
Woh at the end of this i thought there were people outside getting into sh!t. I live in the woods so it kinda freaked me out.
Banana slug. And it exists.
whats the greatest perfect circle riff, can anyone help me out?
what i figured as well
"(unexplainable noise)"
word.
@rotateman My point was that a lot of APC's songs are more lyrical. Like, if you were to listen to an instrumental Tool song, there'd probably be next to no words in it at all :)
Just a random comment from over a year ago xD.
great..... damn, anyone know the silent hill dudes.. i want a good silent hill game backed by tool soundtrack.
I'm making a movie trailer for lord of the flies as project in english.. me and my teacher bonded over our favorite band tool and im trying to think of a good maynard song that exhibits human nature like that in the book Lord of the Flies. so far im thinking the package by apc.. any other thoughts? songs by other bands not involving maynard are also appreciated if you can think of any
5 years Latter. Oh I got a suggestion, what about In the Water by Anadel.
Maybe Sanitarium by metallica
there are 12 tracks, 13th step is like the non-existant last one, or the one that should be there, whatever way you interpret it.
look out, its the feelings police, have a positive outlook or be annihilated!
I thought the numbers meant all the crimes that were committed.
@notmygeneration ya....whats that mean?
you say there are 13 tracks. i only see 12 lol what is the name of the 13th track?
Dream concert, Fair to Midland, Porcupine Tree and APC.
@killerkat92 I think tool would trump them if they wouldn't use so many voice modificators.
I think that someone should extract thoose voices/noises at the back of the song, I would take care of it, but I'm to lazy xP And got no time? nooo... just to lazy.
should they listen to you, and not be allowed to post what they think?
you must be like, REALLY good!
@whiskeykamehameha totally agree
the 13th step generally refers to sleeping with newcomers after you've completed the 12... sort of a tongue-in-cheek inside joke...
@RoyalGerg Josh Freese is a beast, too. ;)
i think it's about him trying to stop himself by counting to ten then does it anyway
@notmygeneration ....."maynards voice is sex.." wat??? wats that suposed to mean?
@killerkat92 You havn't heard alot of Tool songs then, Because they're EXTREMELY lyrical.
@x4aperfecttool Isn't Billy the lyricist? And you're right maynard is amazing but he can't take credit for this great band.
i wonder how much thought he put into these lyrics
the drums remind me of 30 days of night
@benjamminmt yeh, some do i call them 2:34 of odd sounds
it's because the music sells it, not the guy counting....
Thirteen'th' Step, not Thirteen Step...at least oogieboogieman2709 got it right
sounds like Aladdin
im as sad as u are. ive been waiting for another apc album. its really a shame that the band is on indefinite hiatous.
Duhh
Creative "Blu" balls
I think Magdalena is pretty cool, hard to get down on the piano though.
guys.......PET by far.
@killerkat92 you my friend just threw a steak to the Maynard wolves xD
@LucidxBliss True, but I just meant like in comparison :)
@zion2train none, just like the rest of his songs. he's a lyrical genius, it flows through him naturally.
@teamscarce Same as with their other ones :)
@Trippy420Hippy just cos you haven't heard of sonething, doesn't mean they're not any good
I own every album by apc and tool, and there isn't a song on any of them that i don't like.
I think I actually prefer APC. Heard Tool first and then when I heard APC I was like "woah". I think APC's more lyrical, whereas Tool is more instrumental =] Both awesome though - 2 of my fave bands 8D
@dommer117
Gravity is akin to Parabola.
@EgagLatsev lol aye =P was talking generally though xD
@DeRock2008 from two pages before this. I hate it when you reply and it shows up as a normal comment. >_>
