- Vocalist Anders Fridén of the legendary Swedish melodeath band In Flames joins us for Episode 21 of the podcast! In Flames is one of the most important bands in the history of the Swedish metal scene, and are known as one of the pioneers of the Gothenburg sound. To celebrate the release of their 14th studio album, "Foregone", Anders joined me to talk about the new album, working with Howard Benson to develop their modern sound, how they found their newest band members, taking vocal lessons, up and coming bands in the Swedish metal scene, attending shows, reminiscing about music that we grew up with, and so much more!

I've seen a lot of interviews with Anders and this is by far the best one. People always try to ask about old In Flames and everyone's opinions and reactions to the newer stuff, but you managed to have that conversation in such a constructive and conversational way that really lead to an actually interesting discussion. Thank you so much for this!
Thanks a ton for saying that! Yeah, I’m sure he keeps getting those same questions over and over, and I didn’t wanna be one of the ones to do the same thing to him. Haha

Holy shit dude, this is huge. There's no way I wouldn't be able to fanboy like crazy for an hour.
I think Anders enjoyed himself in this, he seemed so comfortable and invested compared to other interviews! An actual GREAT interview and not a "Old In Flames and The Halo Effect" Q&A.
The discussion about what old In Flames can be to each fan individualy and what the music is personally was very interesting!
i don't think you saw the other interviews. He gave the same exact answers, Tank just asked less interesting questions.
To me, personally, old In Flames is the around the Clayman-period. I discovered In Flames when i was randomly roaming around in the music folder on my cousins hard drive. It was mostly 90's eurodisco on there but then, suddenly, i found a track with the cool title "Only for the Weak". The funny thing is that he hadn't written out the artists name, so when i played the amazing heavy & melodic track for the first time the band itself was a mystery to me. Just about a year later I held "Clayman" in my hands and the rest is history :D
I agree. I discovered In Flames around that time too but the first song I heard was Scorn on a mixed artist metal album (I discovered Arch Enemy on the same album) and i just couldn't stop listening to it.
I've compared in Flames' Whoracle to Metallica's Ride the Lightning, Colony to Master of Puppets and Clayman to And Justice for All - where Colony is In Flames' magnum opus just as Master of Puppets is Metallica's best work. And of course Reroute to Remain is the Black album, their big breakthrough. That's where the comparisons end because Soundtrack TY Escape and Come Clarity became so big that In Flames was Sweden's #1 music export at the time, while Load and Reload never eclipsed Black.
Sadly I sort of lost interest after A Sense of Purpose. Happy they're back with that Soundtrack TY Escape/Come Clarity sound. I don't think they'll ever return to the 90s sound because I believe Jesper Strömblad was a big influence on those albums.
Thanks for this very interesting video! I only got into Heavy Metal last year when my son “needed” a chauffeur to go on a Sabaton concert here in Switzerland on a Wednesday 😄 First I was worried whether I could take the festival crowd. But people there were really nice and even helped me out if a Mosh pit 😳 Last week we saw Gloryhammer and Alestorm and I can say metal fans are really nice 🤘 We have a couple of upcoming concerts and I’m really looking forward to Majestica and later Nanowar of Steel 😃 I love to watch your videos and to learn about backstage work, it’s so interesting! Thank you!
I went to that same In Flames/Iced Earth tour, but in Indianapolis. I went alone, but talked to some dudes in line and got to know them a bit. The venue was the most bland box I've ever seen a show in, but when In Flames came on, I was right up front. No railing or anything; you could get right up to the stage. I remember Anders hearing me screaming the lyrics, so he leaned in we screamed along together for a couple seconds. I was close enough to Jesper that I could've touched his guitar. It was an amazing experience. Afterwards, I found the guys I was talking to earlier and they asked, "Why did you go up there? It sounds so much better back here." If I wanted good sound, I'd stay home and listen to the CD on my system. What I wanted was to have a good time with the band, and In Flames delivered.
I’ll happily be the 1000th like for this video. So I saw in flames last year and they’ve been my favorite band for some years now. In between songs I yelled “you’re my hero!” To Anders, and he replied back “And that guys my hero too”. Easily the highlight of that year, if not, the highlight of my life (so far)
Holy shit, you got Anders on here. How cool is that man!
Prof intervju man, This is the most chilled and relaxed Anders I have ever seen and I have meet these guys in Göteborg. You are a natural and you make these guys so comfortable. It's like sitting in your home listening, to nice guys having a conversation . And I have just listening to the new album and I loved it. I am a bit older but I have listening to In flames from the beginning :) and Clayman have special place because I helped me through a nasty break up that hit me hard with a 3 year old son at that time. I LOVED this man. you great !!!
The new album is good but ive had "bleeding out" on repeat. Its so good to me. The sound makes me happy (even if the lyrics are deep, idk)
Cheese warning 🧀⚠️
I have learnt that nervousness and excitement have the same physical symptoms and differentiated by mental interpretation.
I've been practicing saying that I'm excited when I feel nervous, it's been working for me so far.
...And you're interviewing legends in the scene, surely you're at least a little bit excited each time?
It's cheese and it's true that you're just as much a legend and you are worthy of it! 🙌 ❤️
I didn't know if i wanted to watch this, but i'm happy i did. I really appreciated watching two nice people talk about metal music.
I love how anders is getting more and more relaxed. Noticed that more often with your interviews. Its more two people having a good time conversating. Absolutely amazing interview/talk.
The stereotype stuff is always funny to me. Recently i saw Dark Funeral at a festival. LOVED IT. What stood out is Chaq Mol one of the guitarist he was having so much fun and interacting with the crowd. While standing in full black metal war gear. How awesome is that!
Crazy to think they were the first band that got me into the “heavier than metallica” scene and they’re still going stronger than ever!
Nice for this to randomly pop up. I'll be taking the family to see them this coming Sunday
That was awesome🔥! From one In Flames fan to another I know how much the band means to you and I’m really happy for you! Well deserved!
I was kind of hoping you'd ask Anders about Jon Schaffer when you mentioned the Iced Earth/In Flames tour. I know Anders had a problem with him during that time. That was a great tour too. I went to the show in San Francisco. Great interview dude.
Hmm I wonder why Jon Schaffer would be an ass...
I’m so excited for this episode ✨
I’ve been listening to their new album since this morning. simply love it!! Foregone pt. 1 and 2 are probably my favorite songs so far❤
I feel like I've been asleep since 2006. Come Clarity was in constant rotation for like 2 years and then somehow I just stopped following In Flames. So happy that this new album found its way into my life and now just like he said in the interview I'm catching up on all the albums I've missed.
No fucking way you got Anders for this lol. Even if I'm barely familiar with In Flames' work since I only really started checking out them as a band when state of slow decay dropped, I'm at least excited to see Tank geek tf out for this one.
He seems like such a nice and down-to-earth guy. You two could've gone on for hours and I'd still be listening, really awesome conversation, thank you Tank!
One comment on the "phones at concerts" topic. I have worked for two bands (Faun and Jethro Tull) in fall 2022 and both of them had some sort of announcement basically saying "keep your phones in your pockets and just enjoy the show". Jethro Tull even said that there would be an encore during which everyone could take pictures and videos however much they liked (and the video screen even announced that 😅). And I don't know whether it is because of the audience being german (you know... germans obeying rules like they were holy cliché 😅) but the people respected that. At Jethro Tull shows not a single phone was in the air during the whole concert until they played the encore. I am not even exaggerating. I wish more artists would emphasize this like those two bands did, so it got more common to just leave your phone in the pocket at concerts in general...
Clayman was my first In Flames album when a friend told me to take a listen, after that collected all the previous albums and discovered Soilwork when they did that music video collab with IF, my interest kinda waned in late 2000's but this new album is such banger that I feel like a teenager again listening to it
Anders is a legend. Its a good album, it does have its flaws but this one has grabbed me more then the last album did.
What a awsome and interesting conversation. Such a relax and lovely man. So nice for you to remember your old days. Thanks a lot loved this.
this was great
🙌🙌🙌
Love the background change up Tank. Can't help myself but look and compare to my wall. Picked up Forgone myself yesterday. Definitely the best album in over a decade
This is so awesome Tank & love your Orbit Culture shirt. Gonna see em in NY in a couple months!
Love your content Tank! much love, keep doing what makes you happy!
Congrats on having Anders on the show. As a fellow fan I get how huge this was for you. And as a fan you get it with talking to Anders, when you just have a conversation and not ask the same annoying questions and he opens up tells you some fun and interesting stuff. I learned that when I was at a meet n greet with the band. People would ask about Jesper and old In Flames and it was just lame but I asked if they hit up any breweries in town and Anders and Bjorn and all the guys opened up and we had a fun talk.
Cool story for you. I am 55 years and Gothenburg was my hometown and where I grew up. I have always been a metal fan and been listening to metal since I started to listen to music. And of course known and heard of all the bands from Gothenburg. But somehow I never listened to In Flames that much, I heard a song here and there but never been paying them any attention. So in 2017 I found out that my absolute favorite band Five Finger Death Punch was going to play in Gothenburg I bought ticket at once. In Flames and Mice of Men would also be there.
Then at the night for the concert we where standing in line to get in to the arena when I started to talk to the nice metalheads in front of me and speaking of how awesome they are and they said they had seen them four times before already I got confused. So I asked, Have they been here four times? And they answered that one of those times was in Kopenhagen, Denmark. All the time during that discussion I was thinking how could I have missed those shows.
And then when the show started Mice of Men did their show and it was time for In Flames to play I was so suprised when the curtain fell down it was Five Finger Death Punch playing. In that same moment I realized Five Finger Death Punch was not even the main event, it was In Flames! That moment I also realized how big of a band In Flames really are. And yes Five Finger Death Punch where awesome but when In Flames started the arena went crazy nutz! In Flames in their hometown arena with all their hometown fans is something I will never forget, It was epic. And what a band they are playing live!
Since then I have listened to everything they have released and I agree with Anders when he says this is the best they ever sounded. The album released yesterday 10th February 2023 and there is not a song on it I dont love. It is the best album so far. Great video Tank and great work! So happy for you to get to speak to Anders and share this with us.
So envious of you. I had a chance to see In Flames in 2010 when they had a couple of shows in Beijing and Shanghai of all places. But I missed the chance. 😢
Hell yeah I'm soooo stoked that you got Anders on the podcast, knowing In Flames is one of your all-time favorite bands and hell, it's one of my all-time favorite bands as well so I can't wait to watch this!
Hands down the best In Flames interview I have seen! You brought out a side of Anders' personality that I have never witnessed in any setting, and it truly left me feeling 110% more respect for him as a person, and all he has done. Well done Tank!
You did this evening so much better... Did not expected to hear the Anders himself! Thank you! \m/
Tank, man, I am so unbelievably glad I have found your channel. Like, all the stuff you do, the knowledge and passion you have and your general vibe is just so freaking awesome. I can relate to everything you say and I just love it. I had to double check when i saw the notification for the video and was like 'no way he got Anders?!'. This was such a cool and conversational way of interviewing the vocalist of one of your favourite bands. Really great interview.
Thanks for all your work on the channel man. Keep doing what you do, it's really something special.
I've listened through the entire album on repeat today, love it! Really nice interview, glad you got to talk to him like this.
The profound moment for me, is, metal heads dial in the perfect sound for country music... I'm proud to be ' metal head'
Love inflames🤟🤟
Stoked to see you got Anders for this! This was so awesome! 🤘
I was gonna tell you about their new album but I soon realized that if anyone knew about it it'd be you. I hope it's as good as the reviews say. I never really got in to growling so I love their music but not the singing. I hope you're happy! Congrats to this interview, by the way, I realize it's big for you.
What an amazing conversation with Anders. Thank you to both of you.
A hell of interview!
Legend of Killmaira Force at House of Blues Chicago is one of my greatest memories of all time 100% there with you!
You were there too?! Hell yeah! Such a fun time!
this is the best interview ive seen in a while. Anders is one of my musical heroes since my youth. That was a blast . Thank you for that , tank :) Keep up the great work
Anders grinding hard with all these interviews.
Man, I don't envy any artist before an album cycle. Absolutely slammed schedule.
No way! 😮 Fire! 🔥 Just now listening to the new album. Also saw them live in Stockholm in december. Incredible show. Stoked for this episode!
Edit: That was a very well-spent hour. 🖤
love In Flames Whoracle, Reroute to Remain and Clayman were my intro to this legendary band, cool podcast Tank thanks so much :D
Can’t wait for summer to see In Flames!!!
i guess i was kinda lucky in a sense that i discovered them in the 2000s (clayman) when internet became a thing. I heard them first in a mix with songs of the older albums, so to me both pre 2000s and post 2000s are In Flames and i never separated the two.
OMG this is sick...I just got a long sleeve come clarity song shirt...its epic...love u both
In Flames will always have a special place in my heart
my first concert was mudvayne ozzfest off date in toronto, and in flames was opening that night and holy fuck i screamed just now cause anders mentioned mudvayne, great interview tank!
This makes me think fo "metal a headbangers journey" and the docu maker going to meet Bruce Dickenson. "If the teenage me would know i was about Bruce he would flip out" I can totally imagine this felt like that for you meeting anders.
This is the kind of interview I love. Just a relaxed conversation between a couple top blokes.
In Flames has been with me for more than half my life now and this video is giving me all sorts of feelings.
Nice to see him seem happy to be in a conversation, that must have made your day.
Tank, Remember I asked you a couple of weeks back if you met the band? Now in a way you have lol. Good for you man and I loved the interview!
Loved this. Also finally learned how to pronounce Anders’ last name. I’ve been saying it wrong for a very, very long time now 😅
Well, he Anglo-fies his name a lot to make it easier for people. If you said his first name in Swedish, it would sound more like „Ahn-dersh“.
Tank, I saw that Iced Earth, In Flames tour in Columbus, OH. Don't forget that the opening band was Jag Panzer. That was Chris Broderick before Megadeth 🙂 Cheers!
Oh damn that's right!!!
@@TankTheTech so many bands on so many tours. It's hard to keep track of
Awesome interview. And dayum, congrats on the tour. I hope it'll be good being back on the road. Can't wait for some tech BTS
I saw In Flames on a club tour in Bergen, Norway, and I remember Anders calling out to someone who were on their phone, eventually bringing them up on stage so they could film the crowd as well. Hell of a show!
Loved this conversation so much!
Please react to the last installment of Imminence 's album Heave in Hiding! New song came out a couple of days ago called "Jaded!" Love your reaction to them!
Fantastic interview. Been a fan of in flames since 99 and Anders is great. Good take aways as a singer/musician too. Nice job!
Awesome interview. I got to see In Flames last April. They opened up for Trivium, Lamb Of God and Megadeth. They sounded awesome and put on a hell of a show.
Great interview, welcome to Dalhalla this summer 🤘🏻😁
Proud to see you in Dalhalla! 🤘
I do not think its always the case when people say "it sounds like old (insert band)" its always relative to when that person discovered the band. Take Slipknot for example, I am almost 22 and I discovered them not long .5 the Grey Chapter was released and the first 2 songs I listened to of Slipknot were Psychosocial and Devil in I, however If I said sounds like old Slipknot I mean like self titled and Iowa.
I think for some people like yourself and Nik Nocturnal its relative to when you discovered the band and others see it as when there actual early music came out. Though I will agree that the album that you discovered them with holds a dear place in your heart and takes you back especially if you discover the band as a teen or young adult.
That was pleasant to watch. Iced Earth and In Flames? My god I would have loved to see that one.
Pretty awesome seeing that Joe Rickard played with In Flames (and mixed the latest album). His drumming on RED's Until We Have Faces is some of my favourite in all hard rock.
Awesome interview 🤘
Great interview and I agree that we should see the album and the live show as two different experiences. I also think we should humanise bands and artists more, for me a band or artist is just like me the only difference is that they make money on their passion/hobby.
I've seen In Flames three times, never been disappointed with a show, great energy, great connection to the crowd and a awesome experience.
I don't have a favourite era of In Flames I have loved every album since come clarity which was the first I heard since I have heard some of the old and all of the new. And every album has a special meaning. I the mask means alot to me, and I love that some of the songs are written about stories fans have sent them. And the new one has another meaning for me and I love it too. Love Anders take on what fans think about the old and new, and don't like that fans attack each other over who's right. Let's just unite and share our admiration for in flames.
Thanks for this great interview with Anders, it was more like a talk between friends than an interview in my opinion and in a good way.
Dude, I spotted Evergrey behind you straight away ❤❤❤
SO AWESOME
The album is excellent it's on replay constant can't wait for the North American tour.
Totally agree with what you say in the end. Talking to a swede can be different, just what I thought in a Jesper interview the other day 😄
I fucking love that man. Such a cool guy. Hell ya anders
Great interview man🙂
Wild, that Iced Earth Tour was the first time I saw In Flames also. NYC 2002 ?
The best album ever🤩
this album is good solid, probably the best since a sense of purpose
Always great interviews 🤘
Have u listen to Grand Cadaver? (Mikael Stannes third project)
I would of lost my mind and same I super love In Flames happiest songs on earth seriously.
List of death metal by Order 1997 Cannibal Corpse , In Flames 2001, The Agonist 2002 on Canadian Idol, Then Arch Enemy.
Heroes was a big album for me I was going through rough break up and the songs really helped me through it. It was a break up with a girl a really cared about and we were attached to the hip for years. We broke up because I wanted to go to Toronto and she wanted to go to Vancouver and she ended saying we needed to go out own paths.
Are you able to do a meet up in NYC? That would be super cool!!
In flames. I have worn their music out. Anders is amazing. Live he crushes it every time.
Well that was awesome
Really good and interesting interview/conversation Tank.
Is this the fourth interview with a swede? The roadie and Joakim in Sabaton, Niklas in OC and now Anders. Is there someone else?
Why is youtube recommending me this only 6 days after release?!
And I didn't see you advertising this on twitter?
That was actually really funny when you talked about the crowds at country shows. I worked crowd security when I was younger and they were the worst shows. Metal shows were always fun and chill. Country shows sucked and there were always fights or moronic things happening. Thanks for bringing that back to my mind. LOL
Y the best Tank💓
Great interview! 👌🏻 But where did you get that Orbit shirt?? 🤯 Looks awesome
From their label.
@@TankTheTech sorry can't find it, maybe only available in America. Thanks anyway, i'll buy another one 🤘🏻
To be fair come clarity came out in 2006. It might not be as old as lunar strain but its still 17 years old. That is still old when it comes to terms of music.Maybe not roots of the band, sure, but older for sure. But the only thing that really matters, is the new album is fucking killer!
anders seems like a real sweet guy here
man this was an awesome podcast. anders is just a real genuine guy who loves music and wants to share it with anybody who likes to listen.
i wish you good luck on the upcoming tour gig tank, youre awesome!
Are you going to do Sabaton's new song?
I genuinely want a vocal tutorial from Anders…I’m tearing myself apart trying to learn to scream like him and I just can’t get it down
He uses a vocal technique called vocal fries I think for all mid range and lows as well... I might be wrong though
halo effect is in the back XD
No fuckin wayyyyyy
They where the nicest peaple 😂😂😂😂😂
The new album is awesome and now you have piqued my interest in Orbit Culture and Imminence.
Спасибо нейросети. Послушал на русском!
I always laugh hearing about Joe cause I just remember taking him to my dad's house and taking all his liquor back the hotel. Lol.
I may or may not remember that as well. 😂
Forgetting lyrics? How can you forget lyrics with amazing songs such a Crawl through Clayman or Reroute to a Playground Fading?
on a scale from 1-666 how nervous were you beforehand?
555?
@@TankTheTech that's a fair amount
