I have been making my own substrate for a few years now but always love to see how others make theirs. I don't own any reptiles anymore but have a lot of invertebrates, I actually have approximately 150 tarantulas, 15 true spiders, 5 scorpions as well as millipedes, centipedes, isopods and such. I even have earthworms for making compost which I also use for a substrate mix. When you said you found bottle cap in top soil my mind automatically when "nice free water dish" 😅😅

Well you need clean up crew. Such as isopods and springtails. They live off of your reptiles poop and even break down mold. You also need live plants. to make it fully bioactive. You’ll need to feed your cuc also. Fish food.. dried leaves.. food waste..
Nice and clear video! If you had to do a tempered substrate, what would you do? I wanna make a bioactive for an american specie that lives in modest temperature settings. I find it extremely hard to find infos about tempered terrarium, it's ALWAYS desertic or tropical, no between!😅
Bought a bag of top soil and I’m not sure if I should waste a bunch of time baking dirt to possibly mess it up and maybe kill any bugs in it or if I’ll be good to just toss it in… any experience here? Thanks!

You can get the smaller bags if you are using a small cage and don’t have lots of tanks. But I do have a couple of 120 gallons so I get the 3 cu ft one
The main issue I’m having is it is impossible to find organic topsoil or organic garden soil that’s not really mulch and other junk in it. Even Rody soil is like that now.

Great vid once again. I use the same ingredients for my desert substrate also. Question for you, I use the exact same topsoil. I sift it with a colander first to remove the bigger particles of wood and such. I only do this because I fear one of my geckos ingesting the wood pieces. Have you ever had any issues from not sifting first?

I still add a gallon just to rehydrate the moss. It will dry out really quickly with the heat lamps. Only two days for me and it was normal humidity for my dragons
Hello! I have a Frilled Dragon and a leopard gecko. So the only difference is the peat moss. The frilly is in a 100 gallon tank and Leo is in a 60 gallon tank. The frilly is set! She's living it up but our Leo I keep getting mixed do's and don'ts so I'm going with this idea.

No issues using play sand with tarantulas? I experimented mixing with it but then got worried and and stopped adding it to peat. The play sand is Crytalline silica (quartz) and not sure if that could rub against there undersides or get in book lungs and cause problems? Actually, I have a question for you, I rescued 2 geckos recently. They wouldn't have lived more than a day or two at most. They were starving & I believe the guy just didn't realize that geckos are INSECTIVORES. He had lettuce & carrots, no water and it was a scorcher of a day. He was also homeless and had some habits that would have made it very difficult for him to continue as he was that the geckos just wouldn't have survived. He offered to sell them to me and I purchased them ... Actually I rescued them. I don't like the word PURCHASED. So I'm at one of the local pet stores and I see that they have made a few tanks, that were for sale, the cheapest one was $499.00! I'm on SSI so that was out of the question. I asked how theyade the background. There was bark and other things that made the habitat very close to the natural habitat So I asked how it was made. It was substrate that was wet or moist and this bark and other things were put in such a way that when it dried it stayed just as she intended. I need to made this type of substrate. I've purchased topsoil, hydro balls, a tropical bioactive substrate kit, I purchased a waterfall as well. Tell me what I can do with what I have. I want to mold and create...... If you have zoo med repti soil available that would work. Potting soil can work as long as it doesn’t have additives Like plant food or perlite. So it would have to be organic potting soil

You can I have had springtails pop out from bags so things do live in it. However I myself do not. I’ve gotten only springtails from my bags.

Just grab the poop and the small amount of substrate underneath and throw away

You can wash the play sand. You don’t have to wash the peat moss

I would say tropical. They do come from some dry areas but even in the dry areas they stay around moist area in that dry climate.

Usually a lot more sandy rocky substrate when it’s desert compared to less sandy rocky with tropical

See desert sand I found to be way finer. Play sands pretty big chunks. I’ve had no issues at all with it been using it for years.

Sooo do I have to bake the top soil? The internet is making me overthink everything 🤣 I highly doubt the snake will die or get sick from soil

@ChiefSweetsUniverse 1.it's 50% humidity after around 20hrs. Keeping bearded dragon in there is it still safe? 2. is it okay that I put 15% sand instead of 33%
I dont have any top soil here in Dubai. We only have tons of different potting soil. Would that work?
If you have zoo med repti soil available that would work. Potting soil can work as long as it doesn’t have additives Like plant food or perlite. So it would have to be organic potting soil
