    I’m an Angels fan living in AZ, and during the 2021 season the Angels were in town playing the DBacks and Ohtani pitched the first game of the series, and I was planning on going until my Dad and I found out it was Pride Night at the ballpark. I didn’t end up going and I missed seeing him that day during his MVP season because the League decided to pander to a demographic that is not even close to majority of fans.

    As a non American having moved to the United States, I see now the charm for baseball, the way Ben explained it. I come from India where Cricket rules unabated. Each generation has their own "Gods" of cricket , but there is a inheritance of respect and knowledge about the Gods of yore, typically passed on from father to son. Women appreciate cricket equally but they are usually in love with the players, whereas men dissect and analyze the game and therefore, each stroke, each ball, each catch is etched into the memory of the men of a generation that saw it. So when I see a boomer wax eloquent about Roger Clemens or Barry Bonds I can see the eagerness to pass on the legends to amateur viewers. That is priceless. This tradition should not be destroyed with wokeness.

      Sorry, but you have your generations slightly mixed up. A Boomer would likely be waxing eloquent about Mickey Mantle and Sandy Koufax (for older Boomers) or Hank Aaron and Tom Seaver (for younger Boomers who missed Mantle & Koufax).The youngest Boomers were about 20 during Clemens' rookie season in 1984, and 22 during Bonds' rookie season in 1986. Clemens and Bonds themselves barely qualify as Boomers. The people who grew up watching them during their childhood obviously wouldn't be Boomers since those people are younger than Clemens and Bonds.
      This mistake is understandable considering that baseball is new to you, and it may just be that you lack historical knowledge of baseball. However, far too many use the term Boomer without knowing what a Boomer is. They were born between 1944-1964.

    People want to see the MLB have a balance of long ball and small ball. We want to see less analytics and more old school managers. Analytics did ruin the sport. You’ll never see another 300 game winner or even 250. You’ll never see another 3000 hitter. Stolen bases are non existent. Batting averages have taken a backseat to on base percentage, exit velocity, and launch angles. We are paying guys millions of dollars to hit below .230 but they get paid because they hit 30 plus home runs! This game needs drastic changing on a fundamental level.

    • @AJHart-eg1ys
      @AJHart-eg1ys Рік тому

      I worked in scorekeeping/analytics at the MiLB level. Analytics didn't ruin the sport. It opened it up for nerds who knew nothing about baseball to horn in and be given an equal voice to those who DO, based simply on them knowing how to read the analytics. The concept of WAR is an absolute joke. You can tell whether a person is able to engage in a serious discussion of a sport based on whether they believe in WAR. Then you see if they're smart enough to realize that sometimes the larger, old-school stat they're breaking down is MORE useful than the micro-stat.
      We'll see another 3000-hit guy. He'll most likely be a Biggio kind of guy who built up so much good will with the organization - or who knows where all the steroid skeletons are buried - that it allows him to limp over that bar years after they should have gotten rid of him, but there will be that guy. A 300-game winner is obviously worth more doubt.
      I think the about the only useful things that have come from the Moneyball era are outs being more valuable than bases (hence less stealing) and throwing your best reliever when there are 9 outs left to get, rather than just 3 or 6. Most of the rest has basically been, "Yeah. We've known that since the '60s" kind of stuff. Today's sabermetricians honestly believe they're the first people to have seriously looked at OBP. And maybe if they grew up playing and watching baseball, rather than just reading the backs of the cards, they'd know that people have broken down vs. L and vs. R for at least a century.

There would be so much management of pitchers and by the fourth inning its super exciting after that because its sudden death and the game can still go on. extra innings games are always the best so get to the "extra innings" faster... oh and if you are not going to change anything go back to the radio - its not a tv game its a radio game - it sounds non stop and exciting when you do not see it. The guy stage left is your prime example of a guy who can be involved with athletics for a decade or two and still not really "get it." His views on what fans want has been entirely shaped by ESPN - not from a perspective of a lifelong, intimate relationship to a sport.
    I've been in the media for a few decades in major league and major D-1 towns, and have played/worked into MiLB. Fans didn't care about games historically ending 5-3, and they found the process of cobbling together runs - with the occasional home run - stimulating and suspenseful enough. It was the lure of fantasy dollars and other revenue streams that led MLB and the NFL to slouch toward Las Vegas and change the rules to cater toward bigger stat lines. Fan interest had nothing to do with it. Similarly in the NFL, no one was complaining that games were ending 20-13. But - as with MLB - we were told by every media source after the fact that "the fans want more scoring."

      It's also important to note that athletes ARE allowed to have heightened levels of various substances in their systems, to a certain point. Think of it this way. In a 60 mph zone, you and I will likely start to have to worry about being pulled over once we hit 65 or so. In that same zone, an athlete can be going about 85 or 90 before he's open to be pulled over.

    • @AJHart-eg1ys
      @AJHart-eg1ys Рік тому

      @@prasad530 I mean, the difference between the benefit of caffeine and HGH is a matter of degree.
      It appears that people aren't realizing that they are throwing their hands up on an issue involving a substance that is not necessary at all regarding the playing of a sport. In certain healing and recovery processes, yes. To just play the game? No.
      There has been an established standard that takes that into account. Why do so many people even have an opinion on whether it should be enforced?
      It's basically as petty as them not believing that their guys do it and they have felt victimized by those who famously have broken the rules, yet instead of supporting strict enforcement they actually favor just allowing everyone to do it, when there's no reason to do so.
      So they equivocate and try to muddy the waters, claiming that caffeine and HGH are both PEDs, so should be treated the same, etc. Again, people need to look inside and ask themselves why they oppose the simple application of a perfectly sane rule prohibiting substances that have been proven to potentially do great harm to the person taking them. And we know it trends down to the high school level.
      If people are concerned about the popularity of baseball, legalize use of PEDs like anabolic steroids and HGH and see how expedited the decline becomes. Those old white men who are the stereotype baseball fans don't take with allowing steroid use. And the sport cannot survive living off the hispanic population alone.

      @prasad530 Рік тому

      @@AJHart-eg1ys Thanks for the thoughtful response. To be clear, I'm not necessarily advocating for the allowance of HGH, but I do think the line is much less clear than you argue. It is a logical fallacy to argue that just because there has been a standard in the past, that standard should remain in the future. Harm is a very subjective thing, and there is a fine argument that an individual should be able to choose their own risk tolerance. I would guess that playing NFL football is probably much worse long term than taking a course of PEDs, and yet we are fine with players risking their lives in that way. Sure, the degree between caffeine and HGH may be great, but LeBron James reportedly spends a million dollars a year on his body, and no doubt some of those treatments are far closer, if not on the same level, as HGH. Health aside, as a consumer, professional sports are more entertaining the more physically capable the participants are. This is why, in general, women's sports are less compelling than men's. I think you are factually wrong about popularity decline from steroids: the height of baseball interest was probably the home run chase of McGwire and Sosa, and the height of cycling was when Armstrong was crushing it - while all of them were doping, and the consumer cares cares less how they got there, and more about the thrill of the performance.

    I agree that players should be able to use steroids. Because they take it anyway, and gives them an unfair advantage.

    Our family no longer watches nfl, nba, or mlb. We watch NHL, because they don’t try and kiss the ass of the woke crazy left. I grew up idolizing NBA/NFL/MLB players, so it saddened me to let it go, but my country and my values of truth are infinitely more important.

    DeShaun Watson is innocent. People don't just change overnight. He didn't move to Texas and become a jackass. He had a stellar reputation here in Clemson and our coach Dabo is an EXCELLENT judge of character, and he would have known if funny business was going on.

      I would agree on one thing, though. Watson probably didn't change when he went to Texas. As they say about money: It doesn't change you. It just allows you more opportunity to be who you truly are.

      Clay also offers some very disjointed - if not ridiculous - solutions and misreads the issue at least 1/4 of the time because he's not ... I don't want to say "smart enough" ... but he tends to only see one layer deeper than most do on issues that are at least 3-4 layers deep, and that one layer is enough for him to stop digging.
