Oh my god, I never knew there was such a thing as "finger drumming" but I'm 13 years old and in high school and this is literally just what I do on the tables in lessons! so cool!
Watched a few of your videos now and they are excellent. I have been playing just about all percussion for more than 30 years and I am still learning from videos like yours. A bit of clear and precise instruction can make a new pathway in our drumming brains and starts a whole new branch of the Tree of Groove®. Starting with your left is like a reboot... Looking forward to more. Keep rocking and popping, tapping n slapping
I‘m not a drummer but I‘ve worked out almost the same technique, chops and speed like you 😄 Playing guitar since 2002 though. I‘m driving everyone crazy with this. I love grooving out in the car to different metal bands and fingerdrum on the steering wheel 😆
It's cool you did a video on that... I do it ALL THE TIME, I actually practice hits on any surfaces or on my legs and body any time of the day... when I sit on the cajon I realize I have gotten better without even playing on the instrument... its amazing a ))
Great vid. Just started with the Cajon a year or two ago, but have only been playing seriously for a few months. These videos are a huge help, so.... thanks.
I've been doing this since I was about 7. My Granddad was an awesome finger drummer - I still can't do what he did. Transfer this over to a drum machine though and you're rocking!
Good lesson man, thank you for that. I personally play my ring finger instead of the middle one. When I go faster, my hands eventually end up having an interesting swing motion left and right. One note tho, I think the best way to play a double stroke (from a technical standpoint) is to play soft then loud. I've watched lessons on drumeo for drumming masters such as Thomas Lang, Tommy Igoe, Gavin Harrison etc and they all recommend that the offbeat of the double stroke would be the accented one. We all have our styles of course but I just thought I can share with you anyway :)
.. and you are good teacher by the way.Could you maybe show the exercice on the cajon have the same problem, quite hard to make volume with fingers. Is it just practice or maybe a problem on the way i put hand on the cajon? Do you hit the cajon lower than with the entire hand? I saw sometimes you put the first finger on the cajon to support your hand, but not when playing. I admit the sound is very different when my hand is in the air without any support when i hit with fingers. Many thanks.!
This is what I do to practice my Tetris 40 line sprint in my head I play with mainly with my thumb, index, and middle on my left hand and my index, middle, and ring on my right hand. I ought to come up with exercises that practice those fingers.
are you able to do more close up tutorials but start slow with the drumming and then speed up as its a bit hard to see when you change hands and to learn the grooves please!
I didn't realize this was a thing, but have been doing it on my own. Some techniques I recommend you try that I've made up are tapping your ring, middle, and index finger in quick succession to make a single snare-like sound and using the side of the joint in your thumb to easily make two contrasting sounds on the same surface.
Thank you Ross! Actually I'm a Handpanplayer trying to get faster with all kind of fingerrolls, do you have any special suggestions for HP players, or is it possible for u to make a tutorial for Handpan? Thanx again!
Sweet! you're a genius! Just to let you know, I'm gathering some material for motivate youth from Montreal, CA. I'll be using your video to show them different possibilities for drumming without lots of noise. Great job! Hope that is ok for you! Thanks!
Hey that sounds like a great plan. Yeah getting that creativity expressed one way or another is so important. Not just drumming out frustration on a desk but working on exercises and skills that gradually bring results is also super good for us to do.
I've found 39 of your vids in one place. What a treasure! Are you familiar with the Kopf cajon? Made in Georgia, USA, big booming bass, nice sharp snare.
i randomly found this video.. but i already learned that finger drumming stuff by just doing it while im bored in class!! jaja :) i think im gonna make some covers of my fav band :)
I have been doing this since I was a kid, it's been like a nervous twitch for me, it drives people bonkers! What has it been like for you? People do it out of nervousness and bordem.
Quick question on this finger technique - once you've perfected the technique, do you find that you hands are almost or very relaxed? Keep up the good work - excellent vids.
my teacher back in school years ago used to call me a woodpecker. Always waiting for the woodpecker to get distracted and start doing the finger drumming was something she told me she always expected in the morning. 33 years old and i still do this when i have nothing else to do, especially to music.
i do the same thing as you, but different. i use my thumb and the varying heights of my fingers to create the roll, or i add my thumb in combination with my index and middle finger.
Ha , my way of notebook finger drumming is pretty similar . So you have a table , I place my lower palm onto the edge of the table ( where the lower part of the thumb joins in with your finger ) and use my index finger , middle finger and ring finger as "pedals " (pedals as in the kickdrum pedals drummers use ) . This way you've got yourself a triple pedal , you can get some insane BPM out of your fingers ( index , middle , ring ) once you get accustomed to it . I hold a pen or pencil in my other hand ( right hand ) and use a book as a snare . Works like a charm . Anyone in my class who comes by and hears me doing this asks me if I go to drumming classes . Defacto is that I don't , but would love to though . Cheers , enjoy annoying your teachers :) .
Hi Ross, I know this an older video, but I was wondering: coming from table drumming ;) I can do these rolls but then leading with my index fingers. This somehow feels natural to me, as in, I never gave it much thought, until I saw your video. Is your technique (leading with middle finger) one that was taught to you or a preferred method in the hand percussion world or also just one that feels natural to you?
That’s a good question. The way I do it is what felt natural to me. I feel like there is something nice about that motion but I don’t think there are any hard rules.
What you play in opening section sounds exactly like the rythmic phrases in South Indian classical music instruments like mridangam. Did you somehow get inspired by those? Or just coincidence?
Oh cool!! No just a coincidence. I’m trying to learn more world rhythms now but back then when I made this video I didn’t know much at all about the great rhythmic music of India.
@@rosslmccallum this is the tradition I am taking about. Will be interesting to see if you could interpret some of these on table or cajoun. ua-cam.com/video/HDGboI0I7uM/v-deo.html
I hope this helps. I am learning the guitar for my first time, but I realised that I have lost my sense of rythme from Africa. I hope drumming and some dancing can bring this back. I have seen great guitarists that neglected rythme so they failed to be complete musicians.
hello rose! :) can u send me a list of your tutorial videos that I must learn first as a beginner? Like What should I practice 1st on your video? Pleaseee! thank you! :)
Hey man, love the Cajon video's. I'm a kit player originally too but I've started using the Cajon to busk with and these are helping me a tonne with technique. Is there anything you did to your Cajon to make the snare sound so prominent? Mine sounds a little quiet in comparison with the bass tone, I'm still a little stuck with the tuning and maintaining bit. Any help would be cool :). Thanks again!
Hey, do you have to start with the middle finger? or is it ok to start withe the first one? It's like my fingers automatically prefer starting with the first one. :-)
great.vid. frm this vid i came to know there is so much more to learn abt cajon rather than just usual beats..hope for u er further support.thanks . p.s !!!!
Hi Ross!! watched your video, send an impulse to me and got a cajon for myself. For the finger roll if i am a lefty. Is it alright that i can start with my left hand instead of right ? Anything to take note if i am a left hander? Thanks.
you are really awesome, but when i try the finger roll, the volume is quite small compared to the slap sound. How can i overcome this? Or i just need more practicing to make my finger stronger?
Teachers must love you.
Sarcasm??

You have just earned yourself a new subscriber. I'm a percussionist and just recently bought a cajon just because of your videos.
Thanks for the finger rolls Ross. I've been looking for more "technique" vids for the caji

I've been practicing this on my desk during maths, I've kind of got the hang of it but it needs more work.
nobody cares
Fergus Rhodes 3 years ago, you must play expert finger tap songs only
hope you were paying attention in "maths" class because I am pretty sure you were not paying attention in English class.
Hank Moody looks like you are the one who needs more work
Just like the real drums. I'm sure there's some transferrable skills involved. You're creating rhythm with your hands.
Great vid. Just started with the Cajon a year or two ago, but have only been playing seriously for a few months. These videos are a huge help, so.... thanks.
Your Videos are EXTREMELY Helpful. Thank you Good Sir
Thanks for this. as a former pro drummer playing a bit of cajon, I was looking to get more techniques to ad more expression. This is great!

You really can make a good beats with just your fingers. Cool stuff!

Maybe half an hour would be good I think :-) Use your other practice time playing along to music and improving general technique etc.
