How to Safely Transport a Mattress on the Roof of Your Car

  • When not secured to a vehicle properly, mattresses in transport can soar off and turn into missiles. Several videos of flying mattresses show it happening so fast, that some cars can’t get out of the way in time. To illustrate how improperly secured mattresses can wreak havoc on the road, Inside Edition enlisted the help of AAA’s Robert Sinclair. We tied a mattress on top of a roof rack using the twine and drove down the race track at New Jersey Motorsports Park to see if it would fly off or stay tied down. #InsideEdition

Happened to me some years ago. Following a truck with the mattress in the bed not tied down evidently. Wind caught it and it was airborne, straight into my 2 front tires. Bent the metal into my tires. Left to deal with it on my own as the driver left the scene and their mattress. I avoid getting behind anything on top or in the bed of a truck.

Dang... I ALWAYS use ratchet straps, but they neglected to mention something important, at least important to me. I always strap front to back and side to side. I use one strap front to back, then two side to side- front left to rear right and front right to rear left. I have never lost a mattress and the front to back strap prevents or minimizes the flapping in the wind.

The reason I came to this video is because it happened to me just before the time of this comment. There was a truck carried a lot of junk stuffs driving on highway with 65MPH then woods and something looks like bed flew of the truck made everyone swerving all over. I almost hit the big piece of wood and swerved twice. Luckily didn’t hit any surrounding vehicles while they were going so fast. Everybody was OK. I will say everybody was lucky. Very lucky. Otherwise it would had caused an accident that could have killed a lot of people with that speed.😢. The junk yard truck was second car in front of me that’s why I didn’t see. I saw when the car infront of me started swerving and I did too. Good blessed everyone that moment. 😢

That bed mattress is easily flexible to be put inside the car itself, heres a tip remove your back seats or fold it down and you got space people, no need for the roof
