    Awesome video! Exactly the info I was searching for :-) I'm not heavy into the Live Action Roleplay, but I really love the ancient architecture look, historical facts and ideology, mostly Templar's. I've decorated my living and dining room to somewhat of a medieval style and decided to try my hand at a Templar Knights armor. Store bought most items, but wanted to make a unique helmet as to not be completely generic or look like everyone else's armor, something that stands out in a crowd lol, as if the sword, dagger and chainmail wasn't enough of a fashion statement. :-) Thank you so much for your time, effort and invaluable information to guide me along.

    Hi there! Really nice tutorial. I am fascinated with armours since i was a kid. But now i have more money and freedom to try making one. Could you share with me some tips for absolute begginer? What armour piece is the easiest to make? What type of steel is good to make a durable armour or do i need some fancy tools to get it done?

    • @GarageKnight
      @GarageKnight  2 роки тому +1

      Hi! I guess the best advice is to have patience, it's hard at first but once you learn the basics of how to shape metal it gets easier and you learn it by doing it. I try to explain everything in my videos but there's a lot you need to just experience yourself. But it's very rewarding :)
      Thickness of steel should be 1,0 to 2,0 mm. I usually use either 1,25 or 1,5 mm. You can use 1 mm for practice and small pieces but for large pieces it won't hold shape very well.
      Mild steel is what people usually use, it's quite easy to shape and you don't need to use heat. It's also durable enough, but if you want to have more durable you should use different steel with higher carbon amount. But then you need tools for heat treatment and I don't know about those since I don't have them. But it's what people use for those medieval fights.
      The great helm (this video) is what people usually start with. Besides these videos, I've made 2 other great helms, 1 set of gauntlets and 1 other helmet which I have not recorded. So yeah, great helm is a good one to begin with

    If an helmet is forged from high carbon steel 14 gauge finished product what can it be rated at

    • @GarageKnight
      @GarageKnight  4 роки тому +1

      I'm not sure what you mean by rating, but if it were 14 gauge (2mm) and high carbon steel then it would meet the requirements for this modern medieval combat you might have seen (international medieval combat federation). So it would be durable enough. And since modern steel is stronger than medieval steel, it would be stronger than medieval helmets.

      I've never really worked with cardboard so I don't know how to make it shiny like that. You can't of course make it as good as the steel version but maybe you could cover it with lacquer or something? You would also have to make the top part flat but otherwise you could shape it like that. You should use very thick cardboard so it would not have any dents and would not bend accidentally. Any way it should be quite easy and quick project with cardboard so maybe give it a try :)
