Thanks for all of your comments on each video! I know its basically the same tour but the views changes so much during each week and month, and things are always being moved around, so it's nice to log the differences over time!
Most of the Japanese maples are placed under an overhang so they are out in the cold but protected from too much precipitation. I've learned that the potted Japanese maples roots don't mind the freeze so much but do not like staying soaking wet for a few months, even through I've been so careful formulating well draining soils. They are so small that they don't tolerate all of that root moisture very well, unless they are in the ground. and I'll take the ones in the smallest pots inside to an unheated garage if the temps go below 10 but just for that short period then back outside. A few are in pots that are too heavy but they a bit larger maples and there is much more soil in those largest pots. Also, all the conifers and maples in pots are either lines with bubble wrap or are in a smaller pot in the big pot, so they are even more insulated from the weather. and yes, occasionally things will die!!! but mostly the smallest liner type maples, sadly, frustrating and has taken some losses to learn the right way to survive. the conifers just stay out in the weather all year and always up off the ground for drainage.
Also on the Cape during the winter, the night-time temps are often 10-15 degrees warmer then where you are in central MA, because of the ocean influence.
