Historic comeback for Vatanen with an 8-minute penalty for being ahead of a time control by 4 minutes. This edition went down in the history of the Monte Carlo rally for being one of the most exciting..
In this rally it was shown how good the Peugeot was and how uncompetitive the Audi was when it comes to running with the wrong tyres, the German was an impossible car to turn in corners when there was a lack of grip with the wrong tyres. Röhrl lost more than ten minutes in a stage for this reason.
Finally Vatanen won with 5 minutes and 17 seconds of advantage.
Peugeot in those conditions was much more agile even with wrong tires.
And it all has to do with Peugeot central-rear engine, with all the weight located between the two axles with a very balanced weight distribution (almost 50-50%). On the other hand, the Audi with the engine hanging from the front axle became tremendously understeering, with a 65-70% weight over front axle.

Wunderbar...was war das damals für eine tolle Zeit. Unglaublich, dass das schon fast 40 Jahre her ist.

When you watch the last part of the video, that's what we call "Gentlemen Drivers"
I was in St Bonnet-Le-Froid and the Quattro and 205 were amazing.
And the noise of the Quattro!!!

Where Ari Vatanen in the Peugeot won and overtook Walter Rohrl in the Audi on one icy stage. Not sure that Audi competed in WRC after that.

Yes, they continued to participate in the WRC.
In that same year, in the Argentina rally in August, they released the S1 version with the radiators in the rear to better balance the weights, apart from taking out a more powerful version of the engine. Even so, Röhrl could only win the Sanremo in October, but when Vatanen was in the hospital and Salonen and Peugeot were already Champions in that year 1985. At that time, Peugeot also had the 2nd evolution and the appearance of the Delta S4 in RAC rally with a clear victory made these two cars much more competitive than the Audi. The reason was that they were "authentic Gr. B" that is, prototypes created for rallies, while the Audi came from a production car, it was like a "liberalized" Gr. A due to the sheer obstinacy of its "Supreme Boss" Ferdinand Piëch.
In addition, in that 1985 RAC Rally Audi agreed with Porsche to mount a double clutch gear-box (the PDK we know today) that they were also testing in the 962 Gr. C Sport-Prototypes. A rally that Röhrl did not like and he used to go for a walk, and in this case he had a road exit in the 15th stage.
