I think something that flew over everyone’s head is that you get a request to save Jonah in his limo, but there’s no one nearby, which means the only person who could’ve sent that request THROUGH THE SPIDER-MAN APP ITSELF, was JJJ himself

One of my favorite callbacks is when Peter says "Call the play, coach." to Miles. It's the same thing Miles said to Peter in the first game when they were facing the Devil's Breath crisis/Sinister Six. I think it really does show how far Miles has come and how much Peter trusts Miles to take the lead.
Oh damn I totally forgot that! Shows how detail-oriented the team at Insomniac was about this project.
One win you may not have seen is that, if you do all the coney island side quests, you can wear your prizes in the next fight as Spider-Man! Seeing Pete in a neon cowboy hat whip some hunters’ butts is next tier 😂

29:17 actually, in the opening sandman mission Peter mentions that Otto’s research came in clutch for the arms. It’s a bit of dialogue that can be missed as Peter calls miles right after, and if you don’t use the spider arms enough in that combat, the dialogue will be skipped altogether
I was looking for this comment, as like you say, it's a missable line and I only got it in my NG+
Really glad you picked up on Pete's "I'm sorry" at Coney Island because in those few seconds after, it shook me to my core. The possibility of a Spider-Man losing even just one innocent person, witnessing their death because he couldn't save them, the guilt and sadness over not being the best version of Spider-Man possible helping every single person he can. It really shocked and saddened me seeing Peter, despite all his strength, realise he can't save everyone.
I mostly expected Miles to show up and save the day but was really surprised to see Harry.
Plus the Scream fight, the Black Cat mission, the first time with the Black Suit.
And Howard...phew, that mission hit me hard.
So many times this game made me cheer, cry, or a bit of both. Baldur's Gate 3 is my personal GOTY, but Spider-Man 2 is more than deserving of a nomination and even the win.
I'll never understand how people say that MJ scenes ruined pacing. I'm convinced that most people who say that don't know what pacing actually is and just say that as a buzzword to sound like they know what they're talking about
MJ sequences don't ruin pacing, they help it
Personally i've also always been fine with the MJ scenes. Would it have been if, starting from SM1 they let you navigate using tools so you have more freedom, sure, but tbh the stealth is hardly the worst/hardest around. It's no different from an extended stealth sections during missions which, sure, those you can go loud and proud but you don't have to either. There's also the fact that the MJ missions exist to bring you down to reality so to speak and give off a feeling of weakness/vulnerability/terror, so they clearly achieve what they're meant to, and just like the skill tree slowly giving MJ her tools to navigate is also good progress
@@darknessknows1235It sells the horror nature of the Symbiote on Peter not playing as him, but seeing it through MJ’s eyes because it’s not just a monster to her, it’s Peter becoming someone she doesn’t recognise.
yeah the MJ stuff really helps the game along, they were a bit meh in the first game but I loved them in this one. made it a point to take out all the hunters in the street.
I agree, but I think what people mean is just those sections are just plain bad.
It's even weirder in this game because MJ only has 3 missions, and they're all pretty varied

There’s something that I don’t see people bring up, but I love how this version of the symbiote brings to surface all of Peter’s insecurities. It brings a whole new level to it. It’s like the symbiote is feeding on those insecurities, intensifying those feelings, and then subtly telling Peter that he doesn’t need to feel those things anymore with it. He’s basically an emotional manipulator, using a person’s own insecurities against them. We see it with both Peter and MJ. And I absolutely love it
Although it wasn't in the video, the cage scene with Kraven pushing Peter to break out to save Miles is PEAK
I think what I like most about that scene is the fact that Spider-Man just goes full-on animalistic and just uses the tendrils to try and break out.
Also, Kraven trapping a Spider in a box? That had to be intentional right?

I assumed that it was because how, like the comics, since the symbiote was a part of Peter he can’t sense it (as it would essentially just be him sensing himself). I think the idea of him not sensing Harry as a threat is more poignant to the story.
Scream's appearance in this game was amazing, especially if you are familiar with her backstory involving her siblings Phage, Agony, Lasher, and Riot in the Lethal Protector arc.

This channel is much better than the “sins” channels. Obviously not everything is perfect, but I think it’s just much more enjoyable to share and see what we all loved about the games

I'm all for criticism of art, be it a video game, movie, music, TV, etc., but criticism for the sake of criticism doesn't make for a healthy discourse

I used to watch a lot of CinemaSins but slowly grew out of love for it as it became more apparent for it how a lot of it was nonsensical... the last straw for me was in the Princess and the Frog video when he said Keith David was the worst part of the cast... mfing KEITH DAVID and he said he was the worst part of a voice-only cast you can't make this up

I love how they didn't go the extra mile to try and make Kraven sympathetic, he had some basic level of honor but once you find out his family murdered each other over the inheritance and he wasn't even phased by it you realize he's just a monster

There is actually a good reason why Peter becomes a teacher instead of any other job. With Peter being the teacher, he can cover Miles's schoolwork so Miles can go deal with villains. But Miles knew he couldn't defeat Sandman alone so that is why we see him get Peter in the scene. It's just good behind the scenes story writing.
this is a great observation! but also at the end of miles morales or ps4 spider-man miles says that peter should under try teaching and i found this a cool continuation on that
To explain the Venom with wings thing, In the comics during the Absolute Carnage and Venom: King in Black events, Eddie does some stuff that powers Venom up and allows him to sprout wings and fly, and Venom reveals that they could always do this, it's pretty insane

The “I love you..” Peter tells Harry had so many layers to its sadness and beauty. A whole video could be made on just how powerful those three words were for Peter to say.
That is the scene I really wanted this video to comment on. The vulnerability that is shown between these two lifelong friends in such a dire moment is just so beautiful and poignant - a verbal expression of love between two men that just isn't seen in masculine-to-masculine platonic friendships today
Another thing I LOVE about this game is when miles is feeling the rift between him and Peter growing as Harry comes back and gets his own “spidey suit,” in all the crimes it’s Harry showing up. Miles and Peter do not talk or see each other in that part even in the side stuff. Incredible
I'm kinda surprised he didn't talk about the return of Yuri as wraith. I feel like there was a lot to explore there with their tenuous relationship.
I know the video's pretty long already but I would've loved to see some of the side content included, as I thought it had some of the best parts of the game. The Flame story and the Howard side mission especially were really good.
As to what moment had me cheering was the first time hearing venom come through Peter. Telling MJ to run gave me chills. It’s easily my GOTY. Though on the topic of the..controversial suit for miles, I like it. It’s not my favorite, and I understand that it may or may not be sponsorship related, but I like it. I like the contrast of the blue with the red and black.

I absolutely love Kraven in this game. Such an intimidating presence, a fairly compelling motivation- and best of all- he _wins_
Honestly this game was amazing and filled with so many good moments. I started playing this game after a very recent loss and seeing peter struggle with donating Aunt May's things to F.E.A.S.T to flashing back to her talking about balance, it really made me cry and feel more comfortable with my loss. Plus seeing him donate her things made it a little easier in my mind to donate my loved ones things to shelters. Including the side missions with the lost grandfather and Howard's passing, it just felt amazingly cathartic. Easily my favorite game and GOTY for me.
also im so proud of you fighting your addiction, that shit is H A R D. My family had generaltional issues with it and i wouldnt be able to do what I do if my dad and his dad went out of their way to show and work to get through it and away from it. Fun fact during the Sandman fight they actually DO briefly give an idea where the Spider Arms came from. Peter used some of Otto's Doc Ock tech to make them.
I understand your thing about the scarf having anti-venom colours 1:12:58 but to me that was a fun callback since that was the scarf she gave him in his game
I know it’s been a bit controversial, but Miles taking the lead as Spider-Man at the end was a great moment imo. I’ve always thought that Peter viewed the mantle of Spider-Man as a burden, while Miles sees it more as an opportunity. Miles is excited to be Spider-Man, possibly a bit too much so, whereas Peter always suffers from putting on the mask. This passing of the torch works so well for both of the characters as individuals, and we all know it won’t be absolute, either.
TLDR: It makes sense for both characters, and Pete really deserves a break.

Special note for the "Peter sees Harry as his friend so his sense doesn't go off": I'm pretty sure that in comics (and thus probably reflected here) is that because Peter has been joined to the Venom Symbiote before, his Spidey-Sense doesn't recognize Venom as a threat. It's like, you'd never be worried about attacking yourself, so you wouldn't be prepared if you arm all of a sudden slapped you in the face.
This is prime example for the positives in rewatching/replaying games, because I finished the game by Halloween and didn't even consider that this was something that happened until you mentioned it and I connected all those pieces.
EDIT: Also, padded up Harry's suit is reminiscent of Agent Venom, when (I believe it's Eddie Brock) gets the suit later but has better control of it. He ends up working as like a wetwork operative or something along those lines. Does it look kiddy? Maybe, but it's a call...well not a call forward but a call-lateral to that version of Venom.
Amazing video, just one critique. When you said Miles had an anti venom scarf, it's actually the scarf Hailey gives him as part of the winter suit from Miles Morales from completing the "We got a lead" side mission
Yuri Lowenthal can f right off because he is 90% of the reason why this game made me cry so damn much.
He is absolutely insane and so incredibly talented. His voice specifically during the MJ/Scream fight and when he tells Harry he loves him made me burst into tears. I have so much respect for him and can’t wait to see what else he gets to do as Peter

29:20 there is actually a line in the opening mission you have a chance to get about how Peter used Octavious’ tech to help make the arms.
Exactly, plus Pete probably also used some programmable matter for the arms and reinforced them to withstand miles venom. Also in the opening mission they mention bringing in the "new toys" so it was main story dialogue too.
I’ve heard a lot of criticism for this game over the open world and combat getting repetitive, but I never saw any reviewer appreciate the smaller moments and the slice of life stuff which feels integral to a Spider-Man story.
Riding the bike to your old school, getting a flashback to when he first had powers and used them for good, going to an amusement park, playing basketball etc - so I’m really happy to see you cover those parts!
In the Spider-Man Unlimited Infinity comics, Insomniac Spidey meets with 616 Spidey, and 616 Spidey was in awe at Insomniac Spidey's gadgets. 616 Spidey even pointed out they were both geniuses, but in different areas: Insomniac Peter is a genius in engineering while 616 Spidey is a genius in physics. I like how they pointed out the differences.

I have a funny story about the symbiote suit. One of the first side missions I did with the suit was clearing out the bases. Instead of using stealth like I normally did I went full send and immediately went into combat. Those bases are hard when you are under leveled but the symbiote is such a power trip you can just brute force any fight. I got so into the fight I got the biggest adrenaline rush my hands where buzzing and I was breathing like a bloodlusted Nordic berserker. It got so intense I almost passed out experiencing the power of all 19 inches of Venom. This is shy I love videogames and this channel. I love it when games gives us experiences and I love this channel because it celebrates video games as an art form.
This game has my favorite version of the Symbiote Spider-Man story arc.
It appeals to me the most because it feels the most natural, starting with Peter being skeptical about the suit, to falling to the high of it...and the more he gets hurt, he uses it more, sending him on a bender. And the fact Miles has to fight him to help him escape is so perfect.
And this game's Venom is my favorite: A true cosmic horror that devastates the community, like in Web of Shadows, or in perhaps a more realistic analogy: A drug outbreak.

I loved this game and the story and the gameplay and pretty much everything about it, but I truly cannot express how sad seeing Venom die made me. All my hopes for Lethal Protector felt like they died right there. I'm sure Eddie Brock or any version of hero/anti-hero Venom could still possibly happen in some way since Carnage is happening, but seeing the symbiote disintrigate hurt my soul
It would be really cool if the QTEs in the third game allowed you to choose between two or three options on how you wanted to deal with the situation.
I can’t tell you enough how satisfying it is to see an actual Spider man story progress through project after project without worrying about a reboot and going back to the start

I’m surprised you didn’t mention the “I love you” between Harry and Petter it hit me unbelievably hard and is the thing I think got the tears rolling for a lot of people. As me personally who is someone who wouldn’t be me or even possibly around without the friends I have it’s what hit me the hardest.
Also the Zan Clan references were a surprise to be sure but a welcome one
Peter saves Miles, too, but its just expected of him. Hes the mentor, its no big deal when he does it. It just shows how Miles is getting to his level and is able to have Peters back, too. They save each other, which is how it should be.
I love Miles being the main spidey for a while but if you think Peter is retiring, youre off your rocker, ever since Ben he has not been able to stand back and let things go wrong, hes taking a break, that's all it is, a break
there's so much going on in this game that i love, and my most favourite is the difference between Miles and Peter being spider-man. Miles has an entire team to rely on and help him, he doesn't take on the burden alone and through that he is able to move past Lee and grow and become a better hero. his missions are more focused on being the "friendly neighborhood spider-man" because he wants to help people, he's humble, he embodies being a selfless hero (not to say peter isn't all of these BUT he goes about it differently). peter is so surprised that miles lets his friends know he's spider-man! meanwhile, peter is BURDENED with being spider-man. he has embodied "with great power comes great responsibility". he doesn't necessarily help people out of the goodness in his heart but rather because he feels he MUST. the game does a fantastic job showing through the gameplay differences between the two that peter is tired and desperate for help but he feels like he can't ask for help. hes the hero, he shouldn't need help. he blames himself for every failure. when he has the symbiote, when he says "I'M the hero" he's not saying it to brag or be arrogant...he's saying it because he's alone. he doesn't want to be saved, he should be the one doing the saving. miles and mj ground him. he realizes he needs to step back and be peter again. it was a fantastic send off. what a great game. thanks for gushing about it as much as i have been to all my friends who will listen ❤
One thing I love about this game is how it portrays it's "Villians" or Anti-heroes and their philosophy: The ones like Wraith, Black Cat, Prowler, and the like, are selfish, and while they try to do good, or in some cases break the law, They don't kill because they want to--they simply just don't care--or accept that people will get hurt.
As Yuri says "I'd rather lose one night of sleep over a person I killed, than live with the guilt of letting them go." and Li implies, killing isn't a question, its a solution to a problem.
Simply put, a lot of the villains or anti-heroes don't _want_ to harm people, but have no issue killing if it means they accomplish their tasks, or motivations.
The initial moment Peter’s name and health bar popped up and I realized I had to fight him made me break down. Something about that boss fight made me realize that even your childhood heroes need saving and that they deal with problems as well
I think we’ll get another Miles Morales solo game for sure before we get Spider-Man 3. The way I see it, the more Spider-Man games Insomniac makes, the more happy I’ll be
Fantastic video, but I thought it was a shame you didn't win Venom's reaction after killing Kraven, it really felt like Harry just looking at himself like what the hell have I become for a second and then Venom taking over again. One of my favourite parts from the Venom gameplay
After thinking about it for a while, I think Pete's spider arms are programmable matter. That stuff was everywhere in Miles' game, and there are still caches in this one
Personally my favourite part about the Miles vs Venom Peter part is that through all of it, Peters one thought is “as long as I have this suit, I can save everyone” while at the same time believing that he doesn’t deserve or even can’t be saved because HE’S the hero, while Miles is there showing him that he’s allowed to be saved.
Thank you for addressing this! It’s one of my favorite parts of the story. It’s like the symbiote also enhances that self-degradation side of himself. So not only does he think he has to be better and can’t make mistakes, but that he doesn’t deserve anything good at all, which is heartbreaking when you know that’s what he thinks about himself, possibly all the time. Pete deserves to be saved and deserves a chance at a real good life like everyone else.
The wait for this game was worth it loved the story and kraven and venom were both incredible who ever idea it was to cast Tony Todd as venom deserves a big raise
The reason why Peter didn't detect Venom at 1:09:01 is because the spider-sense doesn't detect venom at all, that's one of the reason why Venom is Spider-Man's worst enemy; he has to react to it by his own natural instinct and that is hard when the spider=sense is dulled and you are used to it.
Honestly, this has to be my favorite Spidey game of all time. Not only did it set up the premise of the third game masterfully, but it also included my top three Spider-Man villains from my childhood: Kraven, Lizard, and Venom.
On a personal note, the way the addiction analogous symbiote suit was written touched really close to home for me. Not a lot of people know this about me, but I struggled a lot with addiction as a teenager and getting out off the shit I was on was rough. It was mostly my way of dealing with my PTSD as a 15 year old kid, but it was killing me. Literally. Pete and Harry struggling with the aftermath of losing that high reminded me of the nausea, puking, and more from going cold turkey on my own back in summer 2008. Rehab sucks, but doing it without any support is worse.
But yeah, this game was amazing. Howard's death and the grandfather in the park hit me hard emotionally. Those stories gave me an idea early on about the range and depth they were going to show in this game. I shit you not, my wife came into the living room and asked why I was crying my eyes out. How dare Insomniac hit me in the heart like that!
Just a magnificent game in general and I'm ready so see where they take the finale that they're building towards.
Surprised this video isnt a couple hours long, genuinely one of the best games ive played, unforgettable experience
For me when it comes to how Harry learned about his mom, I felt it. It's been a month and a half since my father died and I felt like how Harry acts. If I didn't prop myself up on a shelf I probably would have fallen to my knees myself. This game really shows accurate emotions even though we really can't feel how the characters feel
I have a slight fan theory as to why Venom is named Venom in this game.
So the venoms of various creature such as scorpions, snakes and spiders can be used to make antidotes for the poison, thus *healing* the victim. And what’s Harry’s mantra throughout the game? “We’re going to heal the world.”
I know it’s a bit of a stretch but I think it’s interesting.
There is a detail in one of the cutscenes, I believe it's the underground lab, where you see the old containment space for the symbiote and its codename is like "VNM-846" or some string of 3 numbers. But this is a really nice idea too! Definitely poignant
When it came to the story aspect of Peter, Harry, and the Symbiote it reminded me of 2 recent things. 1. Harry's story in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 except this time it was his mom who died from a mystery illness instead of his dad/Norman. B. The part in Morbius where Michael is cured/healed, but can't/won't/does use it on Lucien/Milo because of how dangerous it is. The version in this game is Peter won't give the Symbiote back to Harry because of how dangerous it is after it saved Peter's life.
Despite Spiderman 2 not exactly being revolutionary in terms of open world design and other aspects, I still thoroughly enjoyed the game. Sure there are some constructive criticisms that can be applied, but the shortcomings didn't detract my overall enjoyment of the game. I'm just glad that there are content creators and non content creators who are able to enjoy the game for what it is.

A detail I just now realized. When Miles and Martin Li are in Peter’s head, the core of the Symbiote is where May’s office was, the place she died. It wasn’t just the memory locked in a random spot, this is the literal manifestation of the source of the pain he’s been going through ever since she died.

Did not dissapoint.
My prediction is that Harry might get cured in the 3rd game, getting his own brand of powers and joining the fight against his father as hob goblin. That would make for some cool fight diolauge between the two.
Honestly, I definitely think the way it's going to play out is that Norman tests the G-serum on himself to become Green Goblin and then uses it on Harry later on when the serum is finalised, turns him into the Hobgoblin and cures him (obviously, Norman becomes a criminal for a bit to fund this research since I assume his company will be going under for both the Devil's Breath epidemic and the symbiote outbreak)... but then Harry turns against Norman after finding out about him becoming a criminal and the final battle is Peter and Harry against Norman with Norman going the classic "I did so much for you and THIS is how you repay me?" route.
Something I feel not a lot people (at least that I've seen) talk about is Norman in this game.
In the Raimi movies Norman barely interacted with Harry except to remind him of how Peter is better than Harry, but in this game they made Norman an actual father. He is concerned for Harry, and we clearly understand that he loves him, which makes seeing Norman go bat-shit at almost losing Harry all the more impactful.
It also makes his inevitable G-Serum tests that he will do on himself, a mistake he made with testing the symbiote on Harry, all the more meaningful, because now he is risking even more, risking his life to save Harry.
Lastly, Mark Rolston as Norman was everything I could have hoped for. He has the swagger and confidence of a successful business man that we saw in the first game, but the amount of quiet and personal moments we get, capped off by Mark going insane with his performance at the end really touched me. In my opinion, Mark Rolston has one of the best performances in the game, even in spite of it being a smaller role than some of the main characters.
TL;DR: Norman good, can't wait for more.
Any doubts I had about Norman's sincerity was utterly destroyed by the helicopter scene. Without a moment of hesitation the first thing this massively busy, important man, who *just* got hit with the loss of the love of his life, is *take a helicopter to tell his son in person that his mom is dead.*
Whatever faults this Norman has, he was clearly a genuinely good husband and father, who puts his family above all else, no matter what. Yeah, he can be a smug, arrogant jerk...but even then, to be completely fair, looking at all he's accomplished, hasn't he earned it? Just a little?
Every bad thing this Norman does was soley for his family, and not in the Walter White excuse way. It's to save his son from the disease that killed his wife. Like, that's right up there with Mr. Freeze and Magneto. This Norman doesn't need to be in prison, he needs a hug.
I absolutely love that with Tombstone on the side and especially Mr Negative in the main story, the effects of not killing villains even though everyone else believes they‘re too far gone are actually showing up in a positive way here; hell if it wasn’t for Martin Li healing Peter and giving him Anti-Venom, they couldn’t have beaten Venom at all.
Almost everytime the no killing rule Spider-Man, Daredevil and Batman (just to mention some of the biggest names) follow just comes back to bite them when the villains they spare just return and cause more chaos and casualties. For me, the justification of believing in second chances is given way too sparingly in these stories which makes it even more beautiful that it’s front and centre here

I enjoyed this game so much, and after being surprised by how much negativity has been floating around about it, it's so refreshing to watch this video gushing over all the same things I loved. And I especially impressed with how much of the nuance and symbolism you picked up on, so much I wish I'd picked up on myself.

Another win that I don't think you called out is that the symbiote surge design (pre anti-venom) is the exact same design as when Peter comes in contact with the space rock which I thought was cool attention to design. It's like Peter is constantly embracing the power that the symbiote has instead of holding it back until he can't anymore (symbiote surge)
My game of the year. So much fun. Switching between the two is perfect. They feel different enough when playing it's awesome.
