- Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (also known as Batman: The Animated Movie - Mask of the Phantasm) is a 1993 American animated romantic superhero film featuring the DC Comics character Batman. It was directed by Eric Radomski and Bruce Timm, and written by Alan Burnett, Paul Dini, Martin Pasko, and Michael Reaves. The film is based on Batman: The Animated Series (1992-1995), and is the first film of the DC Animated Universe and the only one to receive a theatrical release. Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill, Efrem Zimbalist Jr., Bob Hastings and Robert Costanzo reprise their voice roles from Batman: The Animated Series, joined by Dana Delany, Hart Bochner, Stacy Keach Jr., Abe Vigoda, Dick Miller and John P. Ryan.
"Joker's Favor" is the 22nd episode of Batman: The Animated Series. It was directed by Boyd Kirkland and written by Paul Dini, and first aired on September 11, 1992. The episode features the first appearance of the Joker's sidekick and love interest Harley Quinn, who was later introduced into the Batman comic book and eventually become a popular character in her own right. Batman himself only appears briefly in the episode.

Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill played Batman and the Joker together for thirty years.
The greatest of both characters.
R.I.P. Kevin Conroy.
RIP Kevin Conroy 😭😭😭😭. You are the best Batman 👌.
And can’t forget mark hammil as the joker
While Troy Baker can do both voices it's not just same.
In case you didn't know, Joker is voiced by Luke Skywalker from Star Wars himself, Mark Hamill.
RIP Kevin Conroy & Arleen Sorkin, not only the voice of Harley Quinn, but also the inspiration of the character.
Other episodes - Christmas with The Joker, Two-Face part 1 & 2, Heart of Ice, Beware the Gray Ghost, Perchance to Dream, The Laughing Fish, Joker's Wild, Almost Got 'Im, Birds of a Feather, The Man Who Killed Batman, Trial, House & Garden, Harlequinade, Baby Doll & Harley's Holiday 🙂
Nicki hasn’t seen Star Wars so she’s just not familiar with him
@popcornroulettereactions Ah ok. Well, at least she's now familiar with his voice as The Joker 😉🙂
RIP Kevin Conroy, the best Batman!
@@johntsmith41789 In animation.
"Heart of Ice",
"Almost Got 'Im" ,
"Dreams in Darkness"
"Perchance to Dream"
"The Laughing Fish"
"I Am The Night"
"The Man Who Killed Batman"
"Harley and Ivy"
"Trial"
"House and Garden"
"Second Chance"
"Harley's Holiday"
"Batgirl Returns"
are considered to be the best episodes by most fans.
I'd also recommend the two-parters:
"Two Face"
"The Cat and The Claw"
"Feat of Clay"
"Robin's Reckoning"
"Heart of Steel" and "His Silicon Soul"
"Shadow of the Bat"
"The Demons Quest"
49:40 the show was actually animated all on black paper to get the noir/ gothic vibe right. They put a lot more thought and creativity in the series than superhero shows were usually done before.
“Heart Of Ice”
Best episode ever.
The choral arrangement during the opening credits is the names of crew members, sung backwards. If you play it in reverse, you can actually hear the names of Joel Franklin, Erik Radomski, Jean MacCurdy, Hans Zimmer, and others.
RIP Shirley Walker, she defined the sound of BTAS, and delivered dozens of filmworthy scores that were so far beyond what was expected for kids' TV in the early 90s.
Fun fact: Abe Vigoda who voiced Sal Valestra was also well known for playing Sal Tessio in the first two Godfather films. RIP AV!!!
Dana Delaney was also the voice of Lois Lane in the Superman animated series. She is starred in many movies, notably Tombstone with Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer. Stacy Keach is another long time actor, best known as Mike Hammer on the private eye TV series of same name. Mark Hammill - aka Luke Skywalker as the Joker never gets old.
To me, Stacy Keach is the dad from Titus
Great BTAS episodes: Heart of Ice (probably the greatest episode of the show!), Feet of Clay, Laughing Fish, Two Face, Almost Got 'im, His Silicone Soul. Robin's Reckoning.
Truly, still one of the best Batman movies, full stop. I was 13 when this came out, and already hooked on the animated series. This movie just brought it to a more cinematic level. It was originally planned for a direct to video release, but Warner Bros were so impressed with what they saw, they gave it a well deserved theatrical release.
I like The World's Finest Batman Superman animated team up.
One of the most definitive Batman stories ever. Taking it back to his Noir detective mystery roots and just a tragic story about the life he could have had if it weren’t for both his life and Andrea’s lives ruined by criminals.
I thought more people would be into this reaction to be honest - crazy how good animation has such a small audience - on to Batman Forever haha
@ I know I don’t get the stigma animation gets that it’s inherently childish or something. Ironically s lot of Dc animation has more mature and well written storytelling than the big budget movies to be honest.
I love the graveyard scene so much when Bruce goes to talk to his parents cause he's just legit asking them why can't I stop feeling this way like Bruce doesn't have to be Batman to make a difference he just chooses too since he'll never get over there deaths. I also like the explained why he never does any serious relationships and the voice actress for Andrea also voiced Lois lane in the Superman animated series they did a few crossovers with Batman before the Justice League tv show
The way it works is that you first draw the animation on paper using a pencil. Afterwards you watch the test animation to make sure it looks right, which is called a Pencil Test. Then you redraw it all again, correcting mistakes or adding details, and this time using a pen, this process is called inking. After animation has been inked, it is put into a special machine that scans each drawing, and prints it onto a clear see-through piece of celluloid. Each "cel" is sent to the ink and paint department where paint is applied to the back side of each drawing to give it color. Finally each colored cel is placed in front of a painted background, and photographed. The number of times you take a picture of a cel depends on how long you want the frame to be held on. So you see, this form of traditional animation is just like stop motion.
FYI: one of the most fiendish things about the Joker's laughing toxin is it is activated by the person's adrenalin, so the more excited, or scared, the subject becomes, it just makes it worse, until a person literally laughs themselves to death.
Kevin Conroy will forever be my Batman. The Animated Series was peak Batman storytelling.
Batman: The Animated Series (BTAS), was animated on Black Paper. So the animators didn't have to color all the shadows, they just colored everything else on top.
Mask of the Phantasm and Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero are great 90s animated films.
Mask of the Phantasm is hands down the best Batman movie ever made. They will never top Kevin Conroy as Batman and Mark Hamill as Joker.
Hands down, THE best Batman movie of all. Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker (uncut) is second.
STRONGLY recommended, it's a FANTASTIC movie.
@@richardadams4928 Yes it is, but you'd want to have seen a little of the "Batman Beyond" series for context, plus some kind of intro to Batgirl and the various Robins.
This is my favorite Batman movie of all time, animated or live action.
Please do more Animated movies of the Batman. It's totally worth it 👌.
The fight with the Joker in the miniture city is a tribute to Dick Sprang who drew those type of storyies in the 1950's Batman comics.
I will always hold a special place in my heart for Tim Burton. His ’89 Batman movie showed me the dark, gritty circumstances in which the Dark Knight was originally born, and in which he does best. Prior to that, I had conceptualized him as being originally like the ‘60’s TV show, which was an attempt to make him family friendly that ended up making him cheesy and ridiculous.
Batman is not _intended_ to be family friendly. You have _Superman_ for that. Batman lives in a world in which he witnessed both his parents _gunned down_ when he was a small _child._ He’s a dark, gritty _figure._ He thrives best in dark, gritty circumstances like one finds in _Mask of the Phantasm_ and _The Animated Series._ Tim Burton understood that.
I was born in '87, so was a young boy int he 90's. Batman the Animated Series is the GOAT. Then they went and made this classic as a movie spinoff from the animated series.
Honestly, it's worth going back and watching the original Animated Series episodes in 2025. The series gave us the creation of Harley Quin and the episodes with the Joker and Mr. Freeze were always my favorites.
I AM VENGEANCE, I AM THE NIGHT, I AM BATMAN 🦇🦇🦇🦇.
39:18
I mean... *PERFECT* Joker. He could've grabbed the knife and killed her, but OF COURSE he chose the bologna instead; always going for the laugh.
I don’t know if you know, but the Joker is Mark Hamill.
Dear Popcorn Roulette:
If you haven't already, make Nicki the official "Batman Everything Watcher."
That is all. Thank you.
This was all about diving deeper into Bruce's past of how he became Batman and how his first love Andrea became the Phantasm and was out for vengeance. Ya know if Andrea didn't have to leave Gotham in the first place she and Bruce would've been happy married.
Also that episode "Joker's Favor" was very funny, especially at the end when Charlie actually had Joker on the ropes!🤣 and two other Batman TAS episodes you should see is "Night of the Ninja" and "Day of the Samurai"!
41:23 Miss Hove’s Self Defence Classes for Girls is next level shit.
Hey, Nicki: Your "go-to" Batman T.A.S. episode will be: "Harley's Holiday"
That is a 100% guarantee.
Paul Dini and Bruce Timm, essentially, "reinvented," yet didn't; maintained everything classical great and established ABOUT Batman by creating:
BATMAN: The Animated Series, in the '90s.
(and helped establish new generations of fans as well as: assuring the unending fealty of already-established fans!)
EVERYTHING good that has come afterwards owes a DEEP debt to them.
The series was PERFECT!
The same voice actress that voices Andrea, voices Lois Lane in the Superman animated series.
The Goon was reading a TINY TOONS ADVENTURES comic. TINY TOONS was a show on CARTOON NETWORK at the same time that BATMAN THE ANIMATED SERIES was playing.
While you're not wrong, since they did air on Cartoon Network simultaneously later on, Tiny Toon Adventures first aired in syndication in 1990, predating Batman TAS by two years. Eventually it found a home on Fox Kids in 1992, the same year Batman TAS premiered on Fox Kids.
Nicki should definitely watch the whole show, either on here or in her own time. Bruce Timm's DCAU is 🔥Kevin Conroy will always be my Batman.
Mark hamill was my fave joker growing up
Nicki,
Thanks for sharing your movie reaction.
By the way, you resemble a young
Shirley MacLaine.
👇🏼
One of my favourite Batman movies and is very underrated
Even though Joker's Favor was Harley Quinn's debut, she wasn't actually called Harley Quinn in the script. Her name and backstory were fleshed out more later since Harley was just intended to be a one-and-done character here. However, due to positive feedback from audiences and Paul Dini himself (the writer and creator of the character), she became a mainstay and would even go on to be made canon in the comics.
An episode I'd suggest for Nicki would be Baby Doll, another Paul Dini-penned episode that features another character who was made for the show. You may want to get some tissues for this one.
Lol for another animated Batman movie, if you want a bad film, I suggest the Killing Joke animated movie from 2016. Though you must read the comic it's adapting first. It would make for a fun reaction, especially with how my friend reacted to it when we watched it together.
Happy New Year Nicki🎉🎉
Thanks excellent comments 😊
11:27 “What is _that?”_
“Jujutsu.”
🤨 Mmm… no. All those strikes and blows? That’s a _striking_ art. Jujutsu is a _throwing_ art. Its reliance on throws and joint locks makes it the kind of art it’s not usually practical to practice without a _partner._
Batman The Animated Series and Batman Mask of the Phantasm were made by the same people; Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, etc. Mask of the Phantasm is a continuation of the animated series. You should watch Batman Beyond Return of the Joker.
Other great BTAS episodes; Heart of Ice, Feet of Clay part 1 and 2, Two Face part 1 and 2, Heart of Steel part 1 and 2, His Silicone Soul, Perchance to Dream, Almost Got Him, A Bullet for Bullock, Nothing to Fear, Never Fear, Over the Edge, P.O.V., Trial, Shadow of the Bat part 1 and 2, The Demon’s Quest part 1 and 2, and Appointment in Crime Alley
Batman Mask of the Phantasm even makes Dirty Hairy's Sudden Impact look old fashion and boring.
Arleen Sorkin voices Harley sadly she passed couple years ago Kevin Smith did an interview with her find it I had had a smile almost through All the pod
Best episodes on this time line....which goes across multiple shows and movies
"Two-Face, Part 1 and 2
"Heart of Ice"
"Beware the Gray Ghost"
"Robin's Reckoning, Part 1 and 2
"The Laughing Fish"
"Almost Got 'Im"
"Trial"
"Baby-Doll"
"World's Finest"
"Legends of the Dark Knight"
"Girls' Night Out"
"Mad Love"
"Knight Time"
"The Demon Reborn"
Static Shock
"The Big Leagues"
"Hard as Nails"
"Future Shock"
Movie: Subzero
Movie: Mystery of the Batwoman
Justice League
"Secret Origins"
"Wild Cards"
"Comfort and Joy"
Justice League Unlimited
"For the Man Who Has Everything"
"Clash"
"Flashpoint"
Movie: Batman Return of the Joker PG 13 version
"Epilogue"
"Patriot Act"
"Alive!"
"Destroyer"
movie : Batman and Harley Quinn
movie Justice League vs. the Fatal Five
that's the best of the time line IMO if you want an episode focused on ONE character ask about that character's origin episode
Separate canon DC animated films start with Superman: Doomsday and grow off this point
Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox ends this time line and starts a new time line with Justice League: War 2nd time line ends in Justice League Dark: Apokolips War and a 3rd time line starts in Superman: Man of Tomorrow
Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths - one, two, Three may also be fun
also check out batman brave and the bold: chill of the night
Batman Under the Red Hood is a great movie.
Kevin Conroy is the best Batman. Original Harley's voice is so beautiful and melodic. Margot Robbie's over the top accent is just annoying by comparison. And an intetesting tidbit about the animation: it's all done on black paper, giving its signature dark and Gothic aesthetic.
Yes it was a flashback when he wasn’t dressed as Batman.
Yeah, Batman Mask of the Phantasm was spun directly out of Batman: The Animated Series; so was Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero.
Episode Recommendation: "Robin's Reckoning", the show's only two-parter.
Other Movies:
- Batman/Superman: World's Finest
- Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker
- Batman: Under the Red Hood
- Batman: Year One
- Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Parts One & Two
Heart of Ice, Feat of clay (part 1 & 2) are great episodes.
That big reveal of the Phantasm's identity really shocked me as a kid.
Thanks Nikki, this was great!
The scenes with Andrea and the ninja Bruce Wayne are flashback sequences
Batman the Animated Series...the best Batman and Batman stories ever presented...short of the 90+ year run of the actual comics...which has had higher highs but also lower lows.
38:58 OOMPH!!! This part always makes me ache...
Batman: TAS was so good, it would be quicker to tell you the episodes NOT to see…and even the bad episodes were good!
I love Mask of the Phantasm.
I guess Nicki is a big Harley Quinn fan, hence "Joker's Favor" but if I could only choose 1 episode of B:TAS I'd go with "Almost Got 'Im"
It was so she could see the introduction of the character for historical context
Cool, you should also watch Mystery of the Batwoman and Subzero
Hi Nicki hope you are having an great and awesome day ❤
Harley Quinn has a loose appearance on the first Tim Burton Batman. The woman who was the gangster girlfriend fits with most of Harley Quinn characteristics
You should play the arkham games, kevin conroy does voice batman and mark hamill voices joker
BATMAN THE ANIMATED SERIES still the best Batman there is. "Mask of the Phantasm" is by far the best animated movie of them all but super fun episodes of BTAS regarding Harley;
- "Harley and Ivy" ...the very first legendary team up with Poison Ivy.
- "Harlequinade" ...another (unusual) team up of Harley and Batman.
- "Mad Love" ...Harleys origin (in the slightly updated animated style of the last season) ..are my recommendations. The Show has far more fantastic episode, lots of them are more dramatic and/or grounded in tone; "Heart of Ice", "I Am the Night", "His Silicon Soul" of those are among my favourites and "Almost Got'Im" is pretty much the evergreen go to episode among the fans of the show.
Batman The animated series was awesome as it was meant to have a more mature feel to it than previous iterations .
Mask of the Phantasm was the big screen adaptation of that featuring some great guest voicework
by Dana Delany as Andrea
Stacy Keach as Phantasm
Let's forget Kevin Conroy as Batman and Mark Hamill as Joker
i hope you get to watch some episodes of The animated series ones featuring Two Face like Two Face pt 1 and 2
would be cool .
i really enjoyed this reaction Nicki

Another great animated Batman movie is Batman and Mr Freeze Subzero
Batman anime series Things Change one of my fav ep anything with nightwing and watch Batman Under Red hood

If you are doing animated, how about Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust?
An other good Animated Batman movie is “Batman Subzero.” Same cast as the show. Batman and Robin face off against Mr Freeze.
If you want to see a darker side to joker than watch Batman Beyond Return of the Joker.
Batman superman public enemies. The dark knight returns arts 1 and 2. And batman under the red hood
Amazing movie
The making of "Batman: Mask of the Phantasm." It explains a little bit about the animation.

Original X-Men
do Christmas with the Joker
The ‘secret origin’ to Batman the animated series years ago when it debuted in theatres hardly anyone watched it but now it is a cult classic that showcases the most prime version of the Dark Knight. The late Kevin Conroy has said on record the cemetery scene is his most favorite moment he has done voicing Batman just Bruce wanting to walk away to live a happy life and he is so conflicted he needs to beg his parents for their permission to drop the promise he made. Sadly the mob had other plans and once he lost Andrea he fully devoted himself to his mission putting the mask meant the end of his innocence of his hope for a life other than Batman. And it is fitting the hitman meeting young Bruce was the first meeting of Batman and Joker and what he does sets of their war years later. Andrea was an interesting character and ironically tragic she was the reason Bruce could have walked away and her own loss made her a cautionary tale of what he could be.
Are you trying to say this was made before the series? It wasn't.
@ a secret origin does usually mean it was the first its just an untold version at least in this iteration. We know that he becomes Batman when his folks get popped but no other movie or comic has this romance with Andrea Beaumont that was his fork in the road.
The worst DC or MARVEL animated movie is better then any live action movie adaptation. Somethings don't translate well to live action.
(:) D
