Great video. I recently purchased a Mooney M20C. Ive seen on the jpi that the #2 cylinder is reading a bit high, but the analog temp gauge was on the cooler side. Someone that has a J model said the cowls not opening up enough, but a mechanic said they only open up 1 inch. I've done the same thing you did with sealing the gaps but I think theres more to be done. The mechanic also saying its not really normal for the #2 cylinder to get hot. The temp is normally high when climbing, but ok after. Today's flight #1-318, #2-362, #3-321, #4-274
That is very unusual that #2 is reading higher than the rest. That leads me to think that there is an unusual reason for it. First check and make sure that it has the same type of cht temp sender as the other cylinders. Sometimes there is one sensor that is the probe type as original and the other three are spark plug ring/washer type Also double check that #2 is actually the number 2 cylinder, to do that, remove the cht probe on 2 and put it in a cup of boiling hit water. Then turn on the master and JDM and see that it is in fact #2 that is showing the temp. If all of that checks out then swap probes with the cylinder next to it. If the “high temp” follows the probe then the probe is bad. Do all that then let me know how it went.
Also check the rubber baffling at the bottom front when the cowl is installed. A strip of rubber baffling should go into a groove on the inside of the cowl and retain it. Also ensure that the baffling fills the gap around your starter and generator/alternator. Those should be sealed up tight too.
Thanks Bob, yeah it was a labor of love, I did sell it though. The new owner, had it repainted with new windows. Complete new leather interior as well as replaced the whole panel with Garmin glass including a Garmin autopilot. It’s truly one of the nicest M20C Mooneys around. It’s based on South Carolina now.
Hey there Joe, this was an information video for other people with overheating issues as it is a common problem on the C model Mooney. My Mooney didn’t have any issues with overheating, even during the break-in period.
David Dyck no worries as a bonus the guy who invented the project is a veteran. An Air Force F-16 mechanic. I met him personally when he was promoting his product at Oshkosh.
