    This is great. I love how you can explain the complexity of it in a way that new students can understand, without overwhelming them with theory. Good teachers, lay good foundations. Unscripted, and masters of their craft. Students can only grow from there.. 👌

    Larry, I started watching some of your flying videos, about 4 years ago. I have an appreciation for smart methodical and precise things but also people and you are one of them.
    Your knowledge of aerodynamics as it applies to trikes clearly shows in the way you handle the trikes in your flight videos. It is very similar to the way I handle mine in RC Model form, so I recognize the patterns of control and precise maneuvering because properly designed RC microlights behave in the same way, the aerodynamics and weight shift control apply equally.
    Excellent explanation. I learned all what you are explaining through designing, flying and spending countless hours, years, testing and improving my RC Models and piloting skills, while trying to fully understand the mechanics of microlights but without the human risk factor. I had no official reference when I started experimenting with RC trikes back in the early 80's, so it was all experimental, and in my opinion the best way to learn is to dive in, in my case, no human risk except a few cuts from the model prop by being distracted :), but this approach to understanding any subject also requires a sincere interest in the subject and a methodical and careful thinking mind.
    One of the first things I noticed about the model you are using, as reference, was it has no washout and this is one, if not the most critical details in an Microlight. You should have been using one of my RC Microlight Models for your explanation :), at least mine have built in washout among some other own inventions, using my own methods/parts to preset the washout while allowing the wing tips to auto-stabilize according to air pressure. I called this type of setup the MIA SafeSprog™ and it is a feature I came up with by need of wanting to have a more secure way of keeping the washout on a topless wing, without removing flexibility.
    Many toy and wannabe RC trikes do not have this feature and they rely strictly on a floppy wing, the billowing like in a Rogallo sail to maintain lift and stability but this does not carry thru on landing and it makes a world of difference having the washout to a preset angle so no risk for death spirals and automatically adjust as he model looses air pressure upon landing, the washout which I refer sometimes as auto up elevator is always maintained via my SafeSprogs. My RC Model wings never go into a forward death dive for this reason, a safety built in, if you will. You can see this effect , as well as how well my models actually fly when set up properly. I hope you and your audience does not mind me sharing some reference videos.
    I actually think anyone considering getting into full scale microlights should at least purchase one of my RC models to understand the behavior of the trike in flight. While the RC model control skill is not totally transferable to a full scale one, as people getting into the full scale flight should seriously consider certified full scale flight training, I think it would help to grasp better what you are discussing in this video and having a decent size and well designed RC model can help, as one can easily play with the various parts and see exactly what is going on. For example, the floating cross-bar as you described is exactly how I would put it, it is the keel that shifts creating billowing and if you can understand the mechanics and more importantly limits of the wing behavior, in RC model form, this may help minimize the risk factor in the full scale one. Your video got me back into “Stick and Rudder” for the second time. The first time was in high school as a curious kid who had never flown. This time after I’ve retired from a career flying military and commercial heavy jets for over 40 years and looking forward to learning to fly a weight shift lsa. Still so enlightening! Thanks and well done! Wolfgang would be so pleased!

    Another fantastic video from the planet's expert. In awe of your knowledge and ability to express it coherently. This really helped pull it all together for me. I was given live pieces over time but having it all in one place and the ability to go back when needed (without repeatedly interrupting) made a big difference for me. Thanks again for the comprehensive presentation. And the videographer with proper angles helped too!

    Wow, this a fantastic lesson on trike aerodynamics and cautions. Certainly there's a few differences in control compared to a standard fixed wing. How easy or difficult would it be to get in a adverse attitude of difficult recovery ? Thanks for doing this Larry.

    • @LarrySMednick
      @LarrySMednick  3 роки тому +1

      There is very little transfer of skill from fixed wing to trike. But with proper training there is never difficulty in recovering from any attitude except for a tuck which is completely avoidable in the first place.

    • @allansgoldmining
      @allansgoldmining 3 роки тому +1

      Thanks Larry. That's good to know. Seems like most of these adverse situations would be avoided if one is paying attention.. Tucking most fixed wings isn't good either. Lol ! Going to have dig up more gold before I can purchase a Rev. 🤠⛏⚒👍

    29:36 50-50 balance. I think it is not correct. it should have been 25-75 if we are talking about a rotational (or stability) axis of an rudder, wing or other kind of aerodynamical surface. With more complex shapes there have to be considered a calculus of the product betwen the surface area and the distance to the lateral point/axis. If this one is ignored and the ration goes near 50-50 you will get a falling leaf like behavior of the carriage. In some conditions the oscilations might amplify them self constantly.

    • @LarrySMednick
      @LarrySMednick  3 роки тому +1

      There are many examples of trikes flying with less than a 50/50 balance (60/40). They typically fly with very large slow wings with more yaw stability in the wing and less aerodynamic force (slower speed) on the carriage. The faster the trike goes and the smaller the wing is the more critical it is to have a yaw stable carriage. the entire aircraft May exceed 25/75, YES. And much harder to calculate .

    • @vaterchenfrost7481
      @vaterchenfrost7481 3 роки тому +1

      @@LarrySMednick yes, you have a strong point there for slow flying aircraft with large wing area and low power to weight ratio. I know such cases too. Most of the carriages of slow flying trikes are so irregularly shaped, that there almost can't be any talk about yaw instability. Anyhow, in my experience that 25-75 ratio starts to take an effect above somewhere between 80 and 140 kmh (depending on the wing) and your REVO-trike is a living example of taking this in to the account: all the flushed surfaces, rear fins and winglike streamlined cover of the landing gear - together it's getting this ratio way above 50-50.
      Anyhow, thank you for this lecture, sir. I'm always enjoying the content of your channel. With kind regards.

    • @LarrySMednick
      @LarrySMednick  3 роки тому +1

      @@vaterchenfrost7481 perhaps so. We can measure area and moment from a 2D drawing so long as we know the swing through angle to have the exact answer. Thanks for watching the video.
