  • This flight to Cottonwood, Arizona and back in our Trike was unplanned. I was not prepared for how cold and turbulent it would be, but I learned a lot along the way as I had to face my fears.

    We laughed at ourselves making this video. One minute Diane is hollering and the next minute she is appreciating a house in a river bed. Seatbelt, Check, Chinstrap, Check, Throttle, Check, Diaper......Full

      Looking at the video I can say it was big air, and those desert dry air thermals are sharp. That ridged frame handled it like a champ, I’d have bowed out!!!! I can take 600 to 800 up, but add that sharp dry air with the exit down draft… ekkk I get all sorts of pucker factor going on lol.
      You are faster than me, but we should do that northern flight. I get about 36mph mid trim, I’d imagine your in the 50s to 60s at trim tho.

    I drove I-17 after watching this. After 50 years of flagstaff to PHX trips, I will never look at that area the same.

    Hey Roger and Diane; That's another "cool" video ha ha. Yes, Diane, you are a very good sport! I know the cold can make a person feel depressed. I'm sure glad you made it through that in good spirits. That one area in Cottonwood, I believe is Dead Horse Ranch State Park, not Wild Horse. That rock fence, I would like to know what that was for, also. Thanks for the video, Brother and Sister.

      LOL... after we were watching the video we did wonder if if was Dead Horse and looked on the Web and saw both names. It sure has been a colder winter this year compared to last.

    Diane, in my thermal flying we learn to look for thermal trigger points. You can look to the terrain and it will give you clues where the sun heats the earth, the wind mixes it and then the thermal breaks off and rises. There are chapters on it and with the flying I do when in free flight trim seek those triggers.
    Roger handled that turbulence like a pro!!! Stop scaring him!!! Lol

    I've been really cold in hang gliders but at much higher altitudes. It seems like the lower oxygen makes it worse. In a hang glider you are laying down more out of the wind at lower airspeed. That helps. Her jacket looks nice but not much wind protection.

    • @rogerlarson8040
      @rogerlarson8040 Рік тому +1

      I thought about that, I also thought that maybe the Indians used it to force their game a certain direction and then hunted behind it. That or a defensive wall. I would really like to know and I especially appreciate your comment on making me think. When we hiked up to the indian Ruin in this video, I found an area that looked to me like they had used it to funnel water. Those people were rugged. We drank all of our water just to get up there like i said in the video.
