I don't buy it, I don't believe Shonda was planning on introducing some other child, Maggie, into the picture - it was just a happy coincidence along the way.
She knew. In episode 2x22 she mentioned seeing pictures of mer when she was young. Thatcher said in the episode (although I'm not sure i believe him) that he tried getting meredith but ellis put a stop to it
