THIS is horror!!! Not some ridiculous CGI creatures, not CGI blood, this. Maniac is some of the darkest horror ever made...it makes you feel like you need a shower after watching it.
An absolutely outstanding movie, especially for 1980. For those of us who lived in New York City in 1980, we all remember there was an average of 2,400 murders a year in the Big Apple. The killer's acting is top draw. And I guarantee after seeing the shotgun scene, nobody will be fooling around in their car for at least a week. Thank you for posting this gem.
An absolute classic of the horror/slasher genre. The overview shot of the Deuce in 1980 near the beginning of the film is just great. Joe Spinell seemed like an awesome person in real life. I completely refuse to watch the remake. An integral part of this film was the grittiness and sleaze of NYC during this time period. Caroline Monroe is a real beauty here.
The remake is good in its own right. Look at it like a totally different film and you'll probably enjoy it, they are worlds apart. I found it even more intense and perverse than this. And damn gory.
I have to agree with the sentiments already expressed here regarding the remake. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I absolutely understand having a reluctance to view a remake of a classic, but this one just might surprise you as well.
I saw this movie when i was 9 back 27 years ago expecting to be a fun slasher film like Burning, Friday The 13th or Elm Street but MY GOD what a stomach churning shocker i thought this was. Excellent slasher film and one of my fave horror films.
Horror movie trailers were so much different back then like a while back they used to show way to much of the good scenes and spoil it, horror movie trailers now a little bit better because they don't show a lot of the good scenes which is good
Great horror film. Realism is amazing. Definitely though...this trailer is not a trailer...shows pretty much everything...whoever cut this trailer has no clue of making trailers.
The biggest jump scare of this film was the 'Carrie' scene here at 3:11 Despite that this scene of the arm reaching out of the ground has been repeated and spoofed in film and TV over and over again, it never fails to make me jump out of my seat in total fright.
This movie is nuts in a good way.Just gritty af,dark, oppresive and super violent.Definitely captured that dirty new York of the 70s.The colors-purple,blue and red and the atmospheric vibe of the movie with joe spinell nailing the part is classic 70s horror.
@@dobmaster4412 Your right,it did.I guess I meant, growing up thru the 70s and 80s and watching many horror movies,I always get a 70s vibe from Maniac because it was so grainy and underground.
Joe Spinell played this role masterfully! This movie reminds me of a really bad mtv 80s video all mixed in to a slasher film but it works I think this movie is Awesome!!!!!
This is a great movie. Joe Spinell was an amazing actor and this was one of his best performances. Perhaps you should watch something you'd appreciate instead of crapping on everyone else's parade.
Still love this early 80's slasher sleaze flick. I'd like to make all butthurt & Conservative individuals sit down and watch so they can grow something what they never had.
Does anybody know the name of a movie of some guy dressed in black that killed a lot of people but I remember a scene where a woman cannot see her hair in order to brush it and he removes it and hands her. After a moment he throws her from his moving car? It was some kind of magic man because a native man uses some herbs and crush it and that way he hurt the bad guy and made him bleed but never killed him
As much as I hated the announcement of the remake when I saw it I liked it but still in my mind not better than the OG. This version is so much grimer and gritty. Joe Spinell was way more creepy than Wood, not hating on the remake , I like it but it still doesn't touch this classic.
The remake I found very good indeed! Unlike this original the remake has the scene with the killer holding a woman's scalp in his hand like the poster shows ! That scene was never in the original like the poster shows!
Some Vodka usually does the trick, maybe a little Jack. And obcourse a little sweat leaf does not hurt either! Ha Ha! yep this movie is great when you watch it enhanced........
for example, a teenage girl gets stabbed in the stomach and when the killer snatched the knife, her blood goes all over the house. It's sick and fake but not scary.
help! i'm trying to find a movie i saw when i was a kid. i thought it was called maniac but this isn't it. it was from the 80s i think. guy catches his wife cheating on him and turns to a killing spree. he wore a scary mask and used a knife to kill people. what was it called, please??
I hated trailers for horror movies from the 80's like this that basically showed every good part. It wasn't just this if you watch most horror trailers for D'Argento movies they show the whole damn movie or at least every part that is good. Never understood why they did it back then.
So this comment is flagged as spam! Im having spam for dinner..Anyway i enjoyed this movie when i first saw it but how i feel about it now i don't know untill i watch it again!

Bad ass flick that does not get the respect it deserves
no holds barred.

That shotgun scene was a lot. It crossed the line when it's no longer considered a slasher for me.
@@MusiqluvCA dude you are weak
That was none other than the Godfather Of Gore FX Tom Savini getting his fake head blown up.
What a great little gem of a slasher. R.I.P. Joe Spinell.
This "trailer" shows all the good parts, if you are considering watching this DO NOT watch, its full of spoilers.
true
THANKS

2 late!
Too late but I forget really easily so im all good I'm going to get the 4k version
When movies portrayed real life.......the death and horror of crime in 70’s early 80’s.......

+brutaltruth77 Have to agree with ya. One of the very few remakes worth watching.
I have to agree with the sentiments already expressed here regarding the remake. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I absolutely understand having a reluctance to view a remake of a classic, but this one just might surprise you as well.
The remake I found quite good! A pleasant surprise for me! It stayed faithful to the essence of this original!
You are not wrong about the original. You are wrong for the remake, tho. Not a bad film. Enjoyed it a lot. Feels different. Is good.
Mr. Gazzo really went off the rails after Rocky won the title.
''I told you not to go out Tonight!!!''
The double barrel shot gun scene with tom savini is a very classic scene in maniac from 1981
Great film!
Maniac was a very good and interesting film about the crazed mind of a serial killer with mommy issues !!
I saw this movie when i was 9 back 27 years ago expecting to be a fun slasher film like Burning, Friday The 13th or Elm Street but MY GOD what a stomach churning shocker i thought this was.
Excellent slasher film and one of my fave horror films.
I was 5 years old when I first saw this gem. Changed my life forever.
So gritty and raw!
This trailers full of spoilers.

Another Tom Savini artwork, particularly the car scene.
Very good and very underrated movie! Manic gives real credibility to the horror movie genre!
The biggest jump scare of this film was the 'Carrie' scene here at 3:11 Despite that this scene of the arm reaching out of the ground has been repeated and spoofed in film and TV over and over again, it never fails to make me jump out of my seat in total fright.
Psycho for the 80s
And also one seriously fucked up movie.
This was the dude who played the gangster in the rocky movies lol
Look for Tony Gazzo action figures.

just saw this... super realistic portrayal of an disturbed individual
Disturbed you say?? That is putting his problems lightly!!

Oh man!! My favourite horror movie. His dialog at the start is chilling.
The maniac talking to the audience is in the trailer but not the film.
Also he like like wario. Good and evil mario and wario.
One of the best 80s slashers and Savinis best work
Tom Savini getting his head blown to bits, pure awesomeness!
Please, what's the name of the song played in minute 2:05?????
Joe Spinell played this role masterfully! This movie reminds me of a really bad mtv 80s video all mixed in to a slasher film but it works I think this movie is Awesome!!!!!

The second film Gene Siskel walked out on

Siskel also referenced this film and "Silent Scream" as women-in-danger-films.
Joe Spinell! A legend to me!
Did you know that they've made a remake of Maniac which is not scary but psychologically sick?
Remake very good!
2:40 NECRO sampled the music for his song..'Necro - Frank zito'
Interesting. Some rappers also sampled the trailer to "Mortuary".
Love this movie. One of my favs from my childhood.

Oh, no... I found it: It was "Warlock".
He's a momma's boy.
I wonder if this film inspired the sequel to "Friday the 13th".
Anyone have any good stories about this film in any way, shape, or form? It's going on my netflix!
Classic! one of my favorites!
Horror movies these days are more of overreacting blood spatter and bullshit fuckin' camcorders than being a scary movie.
