Takedowns, and why you should never go to the ground, by Val Riazanov

  • In this clip I will demonstrate certain takedown techniques and also how to resist them.
    I cannot stress enough that going to the ground should never be an option in any street fight and this is not because you cannot win a one-on-one confrontation, but the fact that you don’t know who else is there!
    I did a seminar a few years ago for a well known SWAT team in the US. The guys were very welcoming to a Russian perspective and most of them had MMA backgrounds and it was not surprising that they were good at takedown techniques. I gave them some tips from my own grappling background and of course striking and then I asked them to give me some scenarios that they had difficulty with.
    Now I can’t be specific as to the exact scenario, but let’s just say that it ended up on the ground and two of these guys were woking on one ‘suspect’. When two people are working on one, then it is safe to assume that they will have the advantage, which of course they did.
    But what if the guy had two friends?
    Not only was the advantage lost, but now they were vulnerable and I see this situation many, many times.
    Now think of you as an individual - you have everything to lose going to the ground!
    Pay particular attention to the angles of each takedown and also to staying relaxed and loose as it is not easy to move a ‘dead weight’.
    There will be times when you absolutely have to take your opponent to the ground and also when you are taken to the ground as combat is unpredictable, but don’t direct the action to the ground!

    To all the commenters saying you should go to ground and jujitsu on the ground always wins etc. These videos and Val's ideas are NOT for ring fighting. He means that you don't want to go to ground in a REAL LIFE street fight. Because people can jump on you or you are rolling around on concrete. These techniques are for practical, real world self defense, not for ring sports where you roll around in a controlled environment.

      Completely agree. Would love to see a BJJ "expert" deal with stamps to the head by your attackers mate. A lot of attacks are by multiple attackers. Even if your a Gracie BJJ aint helping you. Ground work is good to know, but it should be the last place you want to be in a "real life" situation without a ref and rules.

    Some people just want a few techniques that work against an untrained attacker. I was watching another channel. The coach had a student who was a school teacher with him (she was learning MMA for self defense). He was honest and said that if she meets an attacker who is smart enough to throw face shots to expose her body (or the other way around), she will lose.

    A point of view for sure. In a multi opponent situation for sure, not really a great thing, although I 've been on the ground with 5 person fight. I used the guy on ground with me as a shield, worked well. But for sure not the best situation. In fact I was able to get two more down there with me, I was very secured at that point and had one crying from a wrist lock. With a one on one I have no real reason to not go to the ground. I did enjoy your video and found it to be very useful and will, for sure, work on the skills you present on this video.

    I'm always kind of skeptical about martial arts that tell you to be loose and relaxed. My experience is limited, but I always figured that in a fight situation, you are never going to be loose. Your instinct is to tense up. Perhaps you can work that out of your system with years of training, but wouldn't it make more sense to train in a style that works *with* that tension rather than against it?
    I dunno, maybe I'm missing something, could someone provide elucidation on the matter? :P

    • @leondelafonte
      @leondelafonte 8 років тому +3

      +HeinrichKonig The goal of martial arts is to train you get familiar with combat situations. With enough training you will eventually naturally learn when and where to be tense and when not to be.
      If you're punching on your feet you most definitely don't want to be tense.

    • @HeinrichKonig
      @HeinrichKonig 8 років тому

      Okay, I suppose I'm confusing not being tense with being in a neutral, relaxed state. In a fighting stance, you're prepared to make a move, but you're not frigid.
      Alright, I think I get the principle now, thank you :)

  • @davidtice4972

    The sport is better than the art because in sport you have an actual resisting opponent. Of course you can mix your training with self-defense techniques such as striking to the eyes and groin.

      When I was just starting training in Systema, I was incredulous as well. When I had to use it against a mugger, several years later, the "fight" was over before I had a chance to get frightened - I did that later, it helps with quickly departing LOL. My body just went to work, without thinking or hesitation.
      Please pay attention to what Val says in these videos: never allow another stranger's hand into your personal space, because you don't know his intentions, and whether he is armed. Systema drills you on this ad infinitum, and then you just do it when time comes - the speed and strength of your response proportional to the personal space entry attempt speed and force.

      Let me give you an example of something I learned. I was doing Krav Maga back then. One of Krav's warm up routines is "touching the shoulders". A simple game you can play at home with anyone. Your opponent tries to touch your shoulder, you are trying to touch his. You are allowed to move, redirect, parry, and block, but not strike.
      While I was doing it Krav way, it would be usually 50/50 against an average guy in the gym. But after I went to a local Vladimir Vasiliev Systema seminar, I started doing it with relaxation. The expression on my partners faces was priceless :) Especially on the faces of those who were like 20 years younger than me, and thus would heretofore usually win easily.
      When you are tense, you need to un-tense some of the muscles before your arm, or any other part of your body, can move. This takes a split second, and typically gives out a characteristic "tell", an unlocking jerk of sorts, which your opponent can see, or feel if you are in contact. When you are relaxed, this doesn't happen, and your move tend to breach into his space uncontested.

    There is a move men use on Women to get them to the ground. Get in their face and distract them with trash talking and then before you can get them to back off they pop out the chest and follow the forward momentum and land on top of you on the ground. I know how to get out from under this once on the ground but I would like to know how to deal with the forward chest movement and not go to the ground to begin with.

      He got me on the ground once but this is what I did using palm strikes to the upper torso below the shoulders to get them away. I have had time to think about this and start to kind of heal from it psychologically and I can see where I made mistakes. I was around people who do not respect women and I allowed myself to be in that environment to be friends with women whose men do not treat them well and though there were cool people in that crowd there were also dangerous people in that crowd and I will be so much more careful who I go around and not go around crowds with shady elements or wives who have sexist, prejudice or abusive husbands. I really liked many of the women around there you know? But look what happened so I see I need to be much more careful and self preserving about who I choose to spend time around and in what environment.

      All I think about in such situations is how to get away and if I cant how to get them away from me.. If the people I rode with had been there I would have just left but they waited till my daughter went to the store and it all happened in the 5 minutes she was gone. So I definitely agree about getting them away from me. They had me cornered they were between me and the way out of the yard and I had no car to leave in since they waited till I was alone.

    So never go to the ground so that would mean don't practice takedowns?? If you practice defending takedowns you have to practice takedowns. If there is a challenge fight on mats you have to know takedowns and ground fighting.
    Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Submission Grappling, Russian SAMBO and Wrestling are sports that go yo the ground. A grappler almost always beats a striker who doesn't know grappling. A trained grappler who practices not being taken down and ground fighting plus striking has the advantage in a fight.

    • @gratefulliving1760
      @gratefulliving1760 4 роки тому

      Systema guys practice takedowns a lot. However, takedowns that are taking both fighters down are strongly discouraged. Your opponent falls, you stand - that's the desired outcome. Both of you going down is not good, especially in situations with multiple attackers. You going to the ground while your opponent keeps standing is much worse.
      A simple example: watch the first bout of this: ua-cam.com/video/e8cNbCkB18E/v-deo.html. The rules of practically all sporty martial arts can turn what would be a practical win in a street fight into a formal loss by disqualification. Systema is not concerned with this: only practical wins count.

In a fight, if he is better than you in striking, it might be okay, to take him down, or in SD if you accidently fell down, you need to know ground fighting. But "OH it's a fight, I am going down!" shouldn't be your priority.
