  • While the mass produced Fenders get all the attention, all the fawning and cost the earth and continue to appreciate, these earlier MIJ Strats often go unnoticed. We have put a set of custom wound Alnico 3 pick-ups in this Greco which has got the absolute best out of it. Looks great, feels and plays like a dream, and now with the optimal sounds. Genuinely the best of all worlds.

I have one that is identical to this and I absolutely love it. Such a well made instrument.

I need to get me one of these but I am always confused about the differences between the models in terms of actual sound... this video helps getting that picture a lot more clear... thank you!

This 1974 has a set of our own pick-ups in it. Here are two demos of original pick-ups (Maxons) in 1973 SE-500/430 guitars - they are characterful and perfect for the authentic vintage low output sound which really needs a decent valve amp to get the best out of them.

After 50 years, these Maxons will all sound different as unless they have been rewound or re-potted, they will have "matured". Some have 1meg pots and others from 1974 have a 1 meg volume and 2 500k tones. Replacing them 250k does not do them any favours.

I just bought a lovely 430 (I think 430, not sure). Love it but very bright neck and bridge and tone only works around 1 and 2. Odd.

Not a great deal of difference between early 430 and 500 - the bridge unit and tuners are the most common differences. The pot behaviour is normal for these, just take care to replace them with modern equivalents - CTS offer 500 and 1meg Strat pots - this ensures that brightness remains.

1970s Fenders were very patchy in quality - Mats and Fuji were at least consistent. We get the Fender worship thing - it needn't be one or the other - it certainly isn't a race. Most people we know that appreciate these Grecos have a bunch of Fenders too.

@@MatsumokuGuitars As someone deeply in love with the strat sound and always disappointed when leaving the guitar shop with modern strats I can tell that these Greco are sounding amazing like true old fender model, they have nothing to do with the gritty and dull sound of nowadays strat, there is a thing we can hear it

A good set of PU119 are lovely - if they are tired after 40 years then we replace them with Clausen A3 or A5. Tony winds them just for these Grecos. They keep the character but keep up and overtake the modern traffic.

@@funkygum300 we have a couple of 430 with original (some rewound) Maxon brass bottomed, some 500s with original Excels and one 500 with Clausen A5. The early 430 are like driving a small engined rally car - flat out all the way even round the corners, and the upgraded ones allow a little more versatility. You need them all!!!!! I don’t think anyone would do a whole gig with the 430, but there would be a couple of numbers that only the 430 can do (if you see what I mean).
